If you've got a problem?
LottieLottie's got the answer?
LottieShe won't sugarcoat them?
LottieCause it's Lottie And Lottie don't lie?
LottieCause it's Lottie And Lottie don't lie.
LottieWelcome to Lottie Don't Lie.
LottieThis is Samantha and Melissa.
LottieHappy Thanksgiving.
SamanthaHappy Thanksgiving.
LottieIt's our first Thanksgiving altogether.
SamanthaI know.
SamanthaI'm really excited.
SamanthaSo what are we doing?
LottieWe're going to all celebrate Friendsgiving.
SamanthaYes.
LottieTomorrow on Black Friday, ax throwing, singing, karaoke, and drinking beer.
LottieBecause why not drink beer and throw axes?
SamanthaWell, I'm not going to drink beer because I don't like beer, so that's why not.
LottieAnd I don't drink, but I definitely.
LottieBut y'all can drink and throw axes.
SamanthaThat's right.
LottieI'm going to sing and throw accents.
SamanthaI'll probably drink something.
LottieAnd you're going to sing, too.
SamanthaHave, like, cider.
SamanthaYeah, I'm going to sing.
LottieYeah, you are going to sing.
LottieI'm popping that cherry.
SamanthaMy funny thing is with singing, though.
SamanthaLike, I like to sing.
SamanthaI wouldn't say I'm super good at it at all, so please don't get excited.
SamanthaBut my friend.
SamanthaI had a friend years ago because we would sing in the car together, and apparently I always start this the, like, the next line of the song, like, half a minute too early.
SamanthaNot half a minute.
SamanthaLike, half a beat too early.
SamanthaSo I'm always singing, like, a word ahead of everyone, so I might do that on accident.
SamanthaAnd I'm.
SamanthaBut you guys have some patience with me.
LottieI don't know that one.
LottieAnyone would notice during karaoke.
SamanthaOkay, good.
LottieTwo, no one sounds good in karaoke unless you go to Nashville, and it's all those assholes that are, like, trying to get noticed.
SamanthaOh, is that the deal?
SamanthaYes.
LottieAnd Asheville, it's fun to go listen to karaoke, but it's, like, everyone who's, like, trying to make it and get noticed, and so everyone's good, but it's fun to watch.
SamanthaThat is so funny.
SamanthaI've never been to Nashville.
LottieDo I need to pop that cherry?
LottieCherry later.
LottieSounds great.
LottieI love popping cherries.
SamanthaI love getting them popped.
LottieOh, my God.
LottieWell, since it's Thanksgiving, I feel like we should talk about Thanksgiving.
SamanthaYeah, let's do it.
LottieWhat do you want to do?
LottieWell, I feel like you grew.
LottieYou grew up a little different.
LottieHow did you guys have Thanksgiving growing up?
SamanthaOh, yes.
SamanthaOkay, so we wanted to talk about traditions, for sure.
SamanthaRight?
SamanthaSo what if I did look up some, like, typical Traditions before.
SamanthaBecause I do want to share.
SamanthaYes.
SamanthaWhat did I do?
SamanthaWhat did my family do?
SamanthaAnd then we want to hear from Sam, obviously, because it was her idea.
SamanthaLove it.
SamanthaAnd.
SamanthaBut let's start off, if you don't mind me sharing, like, what are the most popular traditions?
LottieAll right, Melissa, what are the most popular Thanksgiving traditions that you have found?
SamanthaOkay, I found some basic popular ones, but then I found.
LottieI haven't heard these yet.
SamanthaShe hasn't.
SamanthaAnd there's one, actually that I found that I was surprised at and I didn't know it was a thing, so you guys are gonna have to tell me if you did.
SamanthaBut here's the basics.
SamanthaFeasting, Obviously, we all know that cornbread, stuffed stuffing.
SamanthaActually, cornbread was not a tradition for me, but stuffing, gravy, potatoes, yada yada.
SamanthaOkay.
SamanthaWatching the parade.
LottieUh huh.
LottieUh huh.
SamanthaOkay.
SamanthaDid you guys watch that growing up?
LottieMm, yeah, they still watch it every year.
LottieOh, really?
SamanthaOkay, we're going to talk more, but watching football.
LottieHell yeah.
LottieIt's a Dallas game every Thanksgiving.
SamanthaOkay.
SamanthaDid not know that.
SamanthaWe will talk more about that.
SamanthaSharing gratitude.
SamanthaDid the family make you do that?
SamanthaUm, growing up, my dad was like, everyone say what you're thankful for.
SamanthaAnd it's like, well, you were just yelling at me 10 minutes ago, but.
LottieI would be thankful if you are not an asshole.
SamanthaOh, no, I didn't say that.
SamanthaBut you know, sometimes, so that's funny.
SamanthaBut share volunteering, and that's a good one that we never did.
SamanthaWe didn't volunteer.
LottieOh, that's interesting.
SamanthaI suppose we donated food.
LottieBeing such a big part of a church, I feel like that would be highly encouraged.
SamanthaI know you would think that I mean, the volunteering many times in other ways, but at Thanksgiving time.
SamanthaNo, I just know that we donated food.
LottieYeah.
SamanthaAnd usually we try to buy food for a family.
LottieMakes sense.
SamanthaOf course.
SamanthaBaking, playing games, watching a movie.
SamanthaAnd then the last one was.
SamanthaWait, where'd it go?
SamanthaOh, Turkey trot.
LottieWhat is that?
SamanthaThat is usually like a 5K.
LottieOh, hell no.
SamanthaNo, I did it once with a family I used to babysit with and for, and it was really fun.
SamanthaAnd I still have the shirt, and it's super raggedy.
LottieInteresting.
LottieYeah, I'm not gonna run ever, so especially not on Thanksgiving.
SamanthaOh, gosh.
SamanthaI have a hilarious story, guys.
SamanthaLast night, Jacob and I were driving down the road, and this lady was running across the street with her dog.
SamanthaBut then after she got across the street, she kept running.
SamanthaAnd I said, why is she still running?
LottieWhat?
SamanthaIs she running?
LottieShe stole the dog.
SamanthaJacob was like, yeah, some people exercise.
SamanthaOh, my God.
LottieThat's even better than assuming she stole the dog.
SamanthaOh, my God.
SamanthaThat happened.
LottieI was like, why is she.
SamanthaOkay, okay, sorry.
SamanthaSo, yeah, apparently turkey trot is a thing, and then this last one is a thing.
SamanthaI know, because my family every year break their wishbone.
SamanthaBreaking the wishbone.
LottieAh.
SamanthaBut, yeah, so those are some of your basics.
SamanthaHere's the one that I did not know was a thing.
SamanthaAnd I feel like I should have known this because clearly it's been televised every year.
LottieTell me, did you know that the.
SamanthaPresident pardons a turkey every year?
LottieNo.
SamanthaOh, okay, good.
SamanthaNeither did I.
SamanthaI was about to feel kind of dumb.
SamanthaYeah.
LottieNo.
SamanthaYeah.
SamanthaSo, okay.
SamanthaApparently the apocryphal story is.
SamanthaWe're not sure if it's any truth to it that Abraham Lincoln's son was upset that they were gonna eat a turkey, and so he asked them to not do it, and so they didn't.
SamanthaAnd then apparently a lot of people.
SamanthaAnd then it was just a thing that one time, and then a lot of people thought that, like, President Truman brought it back, but it was John F.
SamanthaKennedy, and he said, let's keep this going.
SamanthaAnd so they basically have a turkey that when it's donated to the White House and raised to be the turkey meal, they pardon it.
SamanthaAnd, like, George Bush sent his away to play be on a children's petting zoo.
LottieYeah, they have a turkey on the grounds.
SamanthaNo, there's a turkey that is raised for them somewhere and donated, and then they pardon it.
LottieAnd pardon.
LottieThat means like, oh, you are not.
SamanthaGoing to execute you.
SamanthaYou're pardoned.
LottieThis is morbid.
LottieSo it's like, basically, the chickens growing up, being on death row, and then it's like, oh, just kidding.
SamanthaYes.
LottieLike, that's cruel.
SamanthaI didn't even.
SamanthaWell, I mean, the.
SamanthaIf the chicken was whispered to you every day, being like, you're gonna die, I guess that would be cruel.
LottieI'm assuming the turkey knows what it's intended to say.
LottieChicken.
SamanthaBut, yeah.
LottieOh, no, I.
LottieChicken.
SamanthaI think I'm.
SamanthaI don't know now.
SamanthaYeah.
LottieNora calls the chickens turkeys.
LottieAnd so I guess I'm now calling the turkeys chickens.
SamanthaOh.
SamanthaWhen I was little, my brother did this.
SamanthaHe was probably three, because he was in preschool or something, and they made him, like, trace his hand and decorate it as a turkey, and he had to name it.
SamanthaAnd then they.
SamanthaThen when we went to the store to pick out a turkey and he had named it Melvin.
SamanthaWhen we went to the store to pick out a turkey, we just started calling it a Melvin.
SamanthaAnd then my brother, the night before, the day before Christmas or Thanksgiving, I mean, my mom opened the freezer and he just burst out screaming and crying.
SamanthaAnd she's like, what is wrong?
SamanthaAnd he's like, you.
SamanthaYou froze, Melvin.
SamanthaLike, he was just so upset.
LottieIt was.
LottieIt wasn't alive turkey, right?
SamanthaIt was not alive turkey.
LottieIt was like a grocery store.
SamanthaIt was a grocery store turkey.
SamanthaBut I think he thought that we were gonna have a Melvin around for Thanksgiving or something.
LottieOh, it's gonna miraculously turn into a turkey.
SamanthaI don't know.
LottieYeah.
SamanthaI don't know what he thought as a three year old, but he was very upset and traumatized.
LottieOh, that's a good one.
LottieYeah.
SamanthaSo we always say that every year you froze, Melvin.
LottieThat's funny.
SamanthaYeah.
LottieSo how did you guys start Thanksgiving every year?
SamanthaSo it was the night before.
SamanthaWe would watch like a Christmas movie and start breaking bread for the stuffing.
LottieOh, okay.
SamanthaYeah.
SamanthaAnd my mom would get up super early the next day.
SamanthaI don't remember if she toasted the bread that night or not, but yeah.
SamanthaAnd then we would wake up early as kids and watch the parade.
SamanthaFor some weird reason, my dad had this fruit salad he always wanted to have, and I've never had it anywhere else, but it's literally just apples and raisins and bananas and it's just fruit thrown together in a bowl, like with.
LottieThe yogurt or anything in it.
LottieOh, okay.
SamanthaAnd I don't know why not, because that sounds amazing.
SamanthaAnd that is amazing.
SamanthaI've had that kind, right?
SamanthaNo, it's just a fruit salad.
SamanthaI've never seen it anywhere else.
LottieHuh.
LottieOkay.
SamanthaAnyway, so that was a thing every year that we had to have, and we had to have one with raisins for him and one without for my mom.
SamanthaAnd I'm trying to think.
SamanthaWe did break the turkey bone.
SamanthaWe didn't watch football, but we played football every year.
LottieOh, I love that.
SamanthaYeah.
LottieYou guys would just as a family or as kind of like a community type thing.
SamanthaAs family.
SamanthaAnd we were in the Mormon Church, so when I was real little, I remember we invited missionaries over for dinner because they're serving a mission.
SamanthaThey're away from their families for two years.
LottieOh, yeah.
SamanthaAnd so they would be like in our.
SamanthaThey would be coming to church with us, but they would be from somewhere else.
SamanthaRight.
LottieOh, that's.
SamanthaSo we'd invite them over for Thanksgiving and They would get to, like, not have to wear dress up clothes for a day.
SamanthaThey get to play football with us.
LottieOkay.
SamanthaYeah, that is pretty strict for a mission, but, yeah, it was fun.
SamanthaIt was good memories.
SamanthaAnd then when you moved to Utah, when I was later, older, we would get together with my cousins.
SamanthaI remember going to the park and we had to.
SamanthaMy one cousin was like, we've got to have, like, the out of bounds lines.
SamanthaWe've got to have it all.
SamanthaSo we were, like, trudging through the snow and trying to.
LottieOh, my gosh.
SamanthaTrying to, like, make the lines.
SamanthaAnd then we played and it was fun.
LottieDid you have a lot of cousins?
SamanthaI did have a lot of cousins.
SamanthaMy dad has four siblings and my mom also has four, I believe.
LottieWow.
SamanthaWait, right?
SamanthaAunt Linda, Aunt Peggy, Uncle Terry, Uncle Kelly.
SamanthaYeah.
LottieHuh.
LottieI was always jealous of people that had a lot of cousins around them.
SamanthaIt was fun.
SamanthaIt was fun.
SamanthaYeah.
SamanthaI have to admit, I was.
SamanthaI feel lucky where I don't talk to him nearly as much as I should now.
SamanthaBut they do follow our journey, some of them.
LottieAw.
SamanthaI love that.
SamanthaWe could give a shout out.
LottieLove that for you guys.
LottieLove that for us.
SamanthaYeah.
SamanthaHi, Dave.
SamanthaHi, Jess.
LottieSo did you guys break the wishbone the day of or the next day?
SamanthaIt has to dry out, so it was usually like a week later.
LottieOh, okay.
LottieOkay.
SamanthaAnd it would.
SamanthaYou'd always have to, like, you know.
LottieHow did you decide who broke it?
SamanthaI just remembered something because I was just trying to say that I was like, we would have to decide.
SamanthaThere was three of us.
SamanthaThree of us kids.
LottieYeah.
SamanthaNo, I forgot.
SamanthaMy dad used to always buy two turkeys.
SamanthaHe always does everything, like, extra.
SamanthaAnd he wanted to make sure there's always enough food.
SamanthaAnd we always had leftovers, of course, and we'd freeze some of it.
SamanthaAnd so, yeah, there was always two wishbones.
SamanthaOh, so I forgot about that.
LottieAll the kids got to pull it.
SamanthaWe did, yeah.
LottieOh, that's fun.
SamanthaThat sounded inappropriate.
LottieAll the kids got to pull the bone.
LottieDid anything come out of the bone?
LottieNo.
SamanthaOh, God, I would have been traumatized to this day.
SamanthaNo.
SamanthaYeah, so we did.
SamanthaWe always pulled and broke the wishbone and.
LottieYeah.
SamanthaHow about you?
LottieUm, so this.
LottieWe didn't do anything the day before Thanksgiving, but we also would get up early.
LottieWe'd watch the Christmas parade while dad started cooking.
LottieIt was always a big deal to all see Santa at the end of the parade.
SamanthaYes.
LottieUm, we would eat and.
LottieWhich I guess isn't, like, common.
LottieI Guess I thought it was normal to eat your Thanksgiving meal as lunch and not dinner.
SamanthaYeah, we did, too.
LottieYeah.
SamanthaYeah, definitely.
SamanthaThat's why my mom would wake up at like, four to start the tr.
LottieYeah, same.
LottieBut a lot of people I know, they do like dinner, like kind of late night dinner.
SamanthaI would not want to do that.
SamanthaBecause you have to clean up at the end of the night.
LottieYeah.
LottieAnd starve all day.
LottieLike, I don't.
LottieYeah.
SamanthaYou're, like, trying to make sure that.
LottieYou Maybe you get to snack all day, like on unusual snacks.
LottieBut.
LottieYeah.
LottieSo we would eat lunch and then either the Dallas game would be on during that or after.
SamanthaAlways.
SamanthaThe Dallas.
LottieDallas and the Lions always play every year.
SamanthaWhat?
LottieYeah.
SamanthaWho's the Lions?
LottieDetroit Lions.
SamanthaDetroit.
SamanthaOkay.
SamanthaYeah, she gave me a side eye, but she very kindly hid it from her voice.
LottieYou're welcome.
SamanthaHow did you not know that?
LottieIt's not.
LottieI'm.
LottieNo, it might be.
LottieIt's not common.
SamanthaIt probably is if it's.
SamanthaLiterally everything's.
LottieWe just.
LottieI grew up with a lot of football, so that's just why.
LottieI know.
LottieAnd it's always fun every year to find out who.
LottieSo just like the super bowl, there's a halftime on Thanksgiving games, and so it's always fun and exciting to know who's doing this.
LottieThe Thanksgiving halftime show.
SamanthaI didn't know that.
LottieYeah.
LottieAnd so this year, Shabuzi's doing one of the half times.
SamanthaSorry, I don't like Shabuzi.
SamanthaOh.
LottieNora's obsessed with Shabuzi, So we're excited, so that's okay.
LottieAnd I can't remember what her name is, but she's really fucking cool.
LottieAnd she's the girl who plays the electric violin.
SamanthaAnd she's Lindsay Sterling, maybe.
LottieThat sounds familiar.
SamanthaYeah, she grew up Mormon.
LottieReally?
LottieYep.
SamanthaOh, that's so funny.
LottieYeah, she's playing one of the Thanksgiving halftime shows.
SamanthaYeah.
LottieSo I'm really excited because I love violin and I like when it sounds cool.
SamanthaYeah, she's like a rocker style, like.
LottieYeah.
SamanthaElectric violin.
LottieYeah.
LottieSo usually after we eat dinner, the.
LottieA football game will be starting.
LottieMy sister and I will jam out to whoever's doing the halftime.
LottieUm, we're always real silly.
LottieWe used to sometimes play football, but we always.
LottieEvery year, while the Dallas game is on, we'll get the Christmas stuff out and start decorating the tree.
SamanthaOh, actually, you're right.
SamanthaI.
SamanthaNo, for us, I think it was the day after Thanksgiving.
SamanthaYeah.
SamanthaThat's cute.
SamanthaNot cute.
SamanthaThat's not the right word.
SamanthaSounded you trait.
SamanthaNo.
SamanthaThat's fun.
LottieYeah.
SamanthaWhat did.
SamanthaAre there any, like, dishes that you guys, like, always had that you kind of wanted?
LottieGood question.
LottieWe are creatures of habit, and I feel like I might have adapted that, adopted that.
LottieLogan and I are obsessed, and we have to, have to, have to have this one particular broccoli cheese casserole.
LottieSo good.
LottieAnd it's just I have to have it every year.
SamanthaDoes it have, like, chicken in it or anything?
SamanthaLike, there was one that my mom used to make for dinner.
LottieLike, no.
LottieIt's a lot of cheese, broccoli, and I think, like, mushroom soup or something, which I don't want to know because I hate mushrooms, so I'm pretending that's not a thing.
SamanthaIt's not.
LottieAnd so we have to have that every Thanksgiving and every Christmas because it's my favorite.
LottieAnd Logan has also, like.
LottieHe will eat all of it.
SamanthaNice.
LottieAnd then we have macaroni, the turkey, mashed potatoes.
SamanthaI feel like macaroni is a Southern thing.
LottieReally?
SamanthaI don't know.
SamanthaWe never had it out west.
LottieOh, interesting.
SamanthaBut I feel like it's around everywhere in the South.
SamanthaLike, everyone has it.
LottieOkay.
LottieYeah.
LottieWhat kind of foods?
SamanthaWhich is weird because my dad's from Kentucky.
LottieOh.
SamanthaSo I don't know why he didn't.
LottieWhat kind of foods did you guys.
SamanthaHave always, you know, like, obviously, like, mashed potatoes and turkey and gravy stuffing inside the chicken.
SamanthaTurkey.
LottieI mean, he always makes that.
LottieBut you don't like it soft like that?
LottieI don't think so.
LottieI think it's gross.
SamanthaOkay.
SamanthaThat's fair.
SamanthaIt makes sense.
SamanthaAnd then.
SamanthaYeah.
SamanthaWhat else do we have?
SamanthaSweet potatoes with marshmallows.
SamanthaBut I don't like that at all.
LottieInteresting.
SamanthaYou ever had that, like, sweet potatoes cooked with the marshmallow and brown sugar on top?
LottieI have yet to put a sweet potato in my mouth that I like.
LottieAnd I don't like marshmallow, so I highly doubt that that'll be it.
SamanthaFair.
SamanthaDo you like maple syrup?
SamanthaEh, my very favorite.
SamanthaThis is a side note.
SamanthaCause we didn't have it for Thanksgiving.
SamanthaWell, we did, actually, later, when I started having Thanksgiving with my friend.
SamanthaBut maple.
SamanthaSo it's sweet potatoes diced up or cubed?
SamanthaCubed, and then doused in butter and maple syrup and salt and pepper and.
LottieInteresting.
LottieThat's all.
SamanthaWell, actually, I've added other things like pecans and stuff before.
LottieOkay.
LottieThat would be good.
SamanthaSo good.
SamanthaI.
SamanthaI'll make it one day, and you can try it.
SamanthaAnd if you don't like it.
SamanthaI won't be offended, but.
SamanthaOkay.
SamanthaMaybe I'll change your life.
LottieMaybe.
SamanthaNo, just.
SamanthaOh.
SamanthaThere was later, I would just say when I turned 12, my dad started making cinnamon rolls every year.
LottieMm.
SamanthaActually, I lied.
SamanthaIt was cinnamon bread.
SamanthaCinnamon and raisin bread.
LottieWas that for breakfast or like, a dessert?
SamanthaI make it during the day.
SamanthaAnd did we do it the day before?
SamanthaI don't remember, but yeah, it was just, like, a snacky thing.
LottieOh, okay.
LottieYeah, we always do cinnamon rolls for breakfast on Christmas.
SamanthaI want to do that.
SamanthaSomeone just told me there was a place in Gainesville where they go and they buy fresh.
SamanthaFresh, but frozen.
SamanthaHomemade Frozen cinnamon rolls.
SamanthaAnd they're, like, amazing.
SamanthaAnd I'm gonna find out the name of the place.
LottieIf I can find you down for some amazing cinnamon rolls that you don't.
SamanthaHave to, like, make.
SamanthaHomemade?
LottieYeah.
LottieOh, I.
LottieFor sure we don't do homemade.
LottieIt's frozen.
LottieFrom the grocery store.
SamanthaOh, okay.
SamanthaWhere do you.
SamanthaWhat kind?
LottieLike, it's just Pillsbury.
SamanthaOh, from the can.
SamanthaYeah.
SamanthaOkay.
SamanthaGot you.
LottieYeah.
SamanthaOkay.
LottieStill no things in the making.
LottieNo, not a thing.
LottieI told you guys last week.
LottieLast week or when we were talking about Thanksgiving fails, we talked about how we had a friends giving one time, and it was interesting to see what everyone brought.
LottieSo I learned that, like, cranberry sauce is a common thing.
SamanthaYeah, we didn't have that because no one in my family liked it.
SamanthaBut once I started doing it later with my friend every year, and it was homemade, she made the best.
SamanthaSo it was like.
SamanthaIt was, like, real cranberries simmered down and cooked into, like, a jelly, like, orange zest and spices in it.
SamanthaOh, my gosh.
LottieYeah, that's the thing that's weird to me.
SamanthaYeah.
LottieIt's like eating Jello, and I don't.
SamanthaNo, it's a compote, more like.
LottieThat makes sense.
LottieBut I feel like the can one is what I have been offered, and that definitely was like, jello on a plate.
LottieAnd I don't know why people love that.
LottieWe don't do, like, any of the fancy corns usually, and I feel like corn's usually a big Thanksgiving.
SamanthaOh, I didn't realize that either.
LottieOh, and it's really funny that you mentioned cornbread is a common tradition, because we've never done that before.
LottieBut I made cornbread for the first time a couple of nights ago when I made chili, and now everyone in the house is obsessed with it, so now I'm making that for Thanksgiving.
SamanthaDid you do it homemade or was it a box?
SamanthaBecause there is a certain box that I love.
LottieDo I have to answer that?
LottieBecause I still made it good.
SamanthaI tell you guys, I love the jiffy box.
SamanthaIt's so stinking good.
SamanthaOh, it's like a little bit sweet, but not very sweet.
SamanthaIt's just so perfect.
LottieMine was not jiffy, but it was a prepackaged box.
LottieAnd I put a bunch of honey into the mix before I cooked it.
LottieAnd then when it came out, I coated the top with honey and let it soak in.
SamanthaThat sounds amazing.
LottieIt was really good.
SamanthaThere is another thing I like to do with the jiffy box.
SamanthaIt is a cornbread casserole, but it's not really a casserole.
SamanthaIt's more just a really super, like, souped up cornbread.
SamanthaSo you put, like, creamed corn in it and sour cream, and you can put, like, jalapenos in it if you want.
LottieI bet you could put, like, chicken in it or sausage.
SamanthaYou could.
SamanthaYou could.
SamanthaBut, like, literally, I just do the extra good corn and sour cream and cheddar cheese, and it's like a very moist, so savory, delicious.
SamanthaIt's so good.
LottieNow I want to make that up for dinner and put either chicken, leftover turkey, or.
LottieWhat's that?
LottieAndouille sausage.
LottieAnd Julie, I bet that would be delicious.
SamanthaI called andouille.
SamanthaI always call it andouille because I think it's spelled with L's.
SamanthaIt's andouille.
SamanthaYou're right.
LottieI don't know.
LottieIt's just a sausage.
LottieOkay.
SamanthaWe're gonna normalize not knowing how to say words.
LottieWorcestershire.
SamanthaWorcestershire.
LottieWorcestershire sauce.
LottieAre there any traditions that you do as an adult that you did as a child?
SamanthaHonestly, no, because I.
SamanthaNo.
SamanthaWell, I guess when I.
SamanthaSo now I go up to my friends in North Carolina, I say, I.
SamanthaBrett and I.
LottieGood.
SamanthaYeah.
SamanthaAnd I.
LottieThat's where you guys spend Thanksgiving?
LottieYeah.
LottieWith friends and.
SamanthaYeah.
LottieOkay.
SamanthaYeah.
SamanthaAnd so that's what we do.
SamanthaWe've done it for the last, like, three years, some or four years.
SamanthaWe play board games all day during the day.
SamanthaGranted, there's a part of me that feels a little guilty because my.
SamanthaMy Danielle, my good friend and her mom and brother all stay upstairs cooking and I go downstairs and play board games with the guys.
SamanthaBut maybe it's not a gender thing.
SamanthaIt's more of just a who wants to help and who wants to not.
SamanthaAnd I guess I'm that not helpful person.
LottieI would take it at.
LottieWell, okay.
SamanthaThis doesn't I don't help.
LottieThis doesn't apply to you, but in my case that would be me because no one wants me fucking cooking on Thanksgiving.
SamanthaOkay, got you.
SamanthaWell, I do take a homemade and they do request it every year I take a homemade.
SamanthaWhat am I saying?
SamanthaGreen bean casserole with the French crispy French onion salad.
SamanthaAnd I do not use canned soups.
SamanthaI make it fresh from scratch.
SamanthaSo that is very yummy.
SamanthaAnd I do help that way.
SamanthaI always take like a dessert or two.
SamanthaSo I take a few things and then I try to make sure, like, hey, if there's something I can do, I try to be there.
LottieYeah.
SamanthaAnd then.
SamanthaBut yeah, it's pretty amazing.
SamanthaI love it.
SamanthaI love it.
SamanthaWe play board games and it's such a good Thanksgiving.
SamanthaAnd we do actually do the same thing, I think where everybody, we do, we go around and say what we're thankful for.
SamanthaAnd we did grow up saying doing that.
LottieI like that.
SamanthaYeah.
LottieWe do think we feel like the going around the table and being thankful shouldn't just be on Thanksgiving.
LottieSo we actually do that every night.
SamanthaYou do?
LottieWe do with the kids.
SamanthaI love that.
LottieYeah.
LottieWe didn't do that growing up, but with the kids, every night we do three thankfuls.
LottieSo.
SamanthaLove that.
LottieI actually think we'll skip it on Thanksgiving.
SamanthaOkay.
LottieBecause I mean, I.
LottieWhy do you need a.
LottieWhy do.
LottieYeah.
LottieWhy do you need a particular day to be thankful?
SamanthaYeah.
LottieActually this would be like a fun conversation for Christmas because that was something that we really took and made our own with our own family.
LottieBut for Thanksgiving we kind of still do the same thing.
LottieI don't get up early, I don't find it exciting, and I don't make the kids watch the Christmas parade.
SamanthaRight.
LottieThat's just not too enjoyable to me.
LottieI'd rather have a nice quiet time before we have to go and be surrounded by family that maybe we don't want to be surrounded by.
LottieAnd we all have some of those, I think.
LottieSo we always go to my parents house for Thanksgiving and that's just how it's always been there.
SamanthaWas going to ask, where do you guys go?
LottieHere it is changing up.
LottieThis year we are still going to their house.
LottieBut this year Simon's doing the majority of the cooking.
LottieBut of course he's a really good cook, guys.
LottieHis turkey is like to die for, unlike any other turkey.
SamanthaReally?
LottieYeah.
LottieSo he's taking over turkey this year.
SamanthaWait, what does he do?
SamanthaIs he fry it and does it do it?
SamanthaNo.
LottieMakes this.
LottieHe Makes this like butter thing and then he like shoves it over the.
SamanthaSkin and Herbed butter.
SamanthaThat's how.
LottieYeah.
LottieAnd whatever he does.
LottieAnd then there's like all these juices that he like, squirts all over and it always actually comes out juicy.
LottieAnd I'm.
LottieI'm always used to getting a dry turkey for Thanksgiving, so it'll be interesting to see what everyone else thinks of his turkey.
LottieAnd there's only been a couple of Thanksgivings that we didn't do that.
LottieWhen I think it was the first year that Simon and I were together for Thanksgiving.
LottieMy parents lived in South Carolina, and for some reason I cannot remember why we were going to do our own Thanksgiving.
LottieAnd I remember Simon bought this like tiny, tiny turkey that was just big enough to feed the four of us.
SamanthaThat's really cute.
LottieAnd he.
LottieI think he either put it in the oven or told me to put it in the oven for him.
LottieAnd then he had to go to work for a few minutes or for a couple of hours.
LottieSo the turkey went in the oven.
LottieBut then Amelia woke up sick and she has a hole in her heart.
LottieAnd so at that time, anytime she got a fever, got sick, it was a big deal.
LottieSo you had to go to the hospital.
LottieSo I took her to Choa on Thanksgiving thinking that the turkey would be okay in the oven.
SamanthaOh, no.
LottieAnd Amelia was fine.
LottieWe got home.
LottieI mean, honestly, we weren't there for too long.
LottieLike it was fine.
LottieBut by the time we got back home, the turkey was fried.
LottieSimon was like trying to shave off like burnt stuff so we could at least eat the insides of it.
LottieAnd it was a very ungrate food Thanksgiving.
LottieBut it was our first Thanksgiving together.
SamanthaAnd so we always remember it.
LottieI do.
LottieAnd then that was the first year that we were together together.
LottieSo that's the first year that Simon and I put Christmas stuff up together because we did do that.
SamanthaCute.
LottieYeah, I like it.
LottieI do.
SamanthaI really enjoy decorating for Christmas.
SamanthaI haven't done it the last few years.
SamanthaWell, that's not true.
SamanthaTwo years ago I did.
SamanthaLast year I just was way too busy.
LottieI feel like it's the only holiday I do decorate.
SamanthaI love it.
SamanthaI want to sit around.
SamanthaI think this year I am going to go with my sister in law and get a Christmas tree at the same time as them.
LottieGood.
SamanthaI.
SamanthaYeah.
LottieReal.
SamanthaA real one.
SamanthaI wanted a real tree.
SamanthaI would love to have a real tree every year.
SamanthaBrett doesn't love decorating, and that's part of the reason why it's not that important.
SamanthaLike, I kind of let it.
SamanthaIf I'm busy, I just do it.
SamanthaBut we did, like, two years ago come to a compromise.
SamanthaWell, let's just get an artificial tree.
SamanthaCause he just didn't think, I just don't wanna spend money on a tree every year.
SamanthaI do.
SamanthaAnd I told him that I wanted to get a real tree this year, and he agreed.
SamanthaEven though we have an artificial one that we could use.
SamanthaSo shake it up a bit.
SamanthaRight.
SamanthaI just.
SamanthaI just love sitting around a tree with the lights off.
SamanthaThe.
LottieYes.
SamanthaTwinkling on the tree.
SamanthaOn.
LottieRight.
SamanthaAnd you're just drinking a tea or cocoa, reading.
LottieMaybe you just end up, like, tranquilized in the tree lights.
SamanthaYeah, Tranquilized.
SamanthaThat's cute.
LottieIs that.
LottieNo, tranquilize is the word.
SamanthaI think you mean mesmerized and trans.
SamanthaWhat's the word you're trying to put with it?
SamanthaSomething.
LottieI make up my own vocabulary.
SamanthaI love it.
SamanthaBut tranquilized works too.
SamanthaYou could just like.
LottieNow I need to look up what word I was.
SamanthaTrying to go in the kitchen or living room and they're like, mom, wake up.
SamanthaShe's just been tranquilized by the tree.
LottieOh, my.
LottieI love it.
LottieWell, it would be interesting to hear all the different ways to celebrate.
SamanthaYeah.
SamanthaAnd honestly, this is getting me excited.
SamanthaOne for Thanksgiving and two, for now.
SamanthaEven decorating for Christmas.
LottieYeah, I'm excited to talk about Christmas.
SamanthaMe too.
LottieSo Happy Thanksgiving.
SamanthaHappy Thanksgiving, everyone.
