Have you ever felt that flutter of fear telling you to shut down?
Speaker AWhat if staying open leads to magic?
Speaker AToday, I'm sharing a story about fear, trust, and an unforgettable moment of kindness that changed everything for me.
Speaker AI'm Heather Masters and this is Wednesday.
Speaker AReal stories on the Choosing Happy podcast where we dive into the moments that teach us most about choosing courage over comfort.
Speaker ASo stay tuned for this Wednesday's Choosing Happy podcast.
Speaker AIt was late, almost midnight, when I hopped on the tube after overstaying long, longer than I'd planned at a friend's.
Speaker AIt was summer, the carriage was empty, so I relaxed a little, settling into the familiar rhythm of London's underground.
Speaker AAt the next station, the doors opened and around 10 young, loud, energetic students poured in and took all of the seats around me.
Speaker ANow my heart started racing.
Speaker AI felt completely overwhelmed, nervous.
Speaker AIt was after midnight and every alarm bell in my head went off.
Speaker AHere I was, alone, late at night, suddenly surrounded, and my first instinct was to shut down, to put my headphones in, avoid eye contact and pray for my stop to come quickly.
Speaker ABut the guy sitting right next to me noticed that I was tense.
Speaker AAnd instead of ignoring it, he leaned over and he said, it's okay, we're cool.
Speaker AHe started chatting with me, just engaging general questions.
Speaker AWhat did I do?
Speaker AWhere was I going?
Speaker AHad I had a good, even clearly trying to ease my nerves?
Speaker AAnd then he asked a simple question.
Speaker AWhat's your favourite song?
Speaker AAs you probably know from earlier in the week, without hesitation, I blurted out Bohemian Rhapsody.
Speaker ABecause I've always been a massive Queen fan.
Speaker AAnd to my absolute surprise, this lad turns to his mates and shouts, right lads, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Speaker AAnd they all, every single one of them, started singing to me.
Speaker ANot at me, to me.
Speaker AThis beautiful impromptu performance just for one anxious woman on a late night tube.
Speaker AIt was incredible.
Speaker AOne of the kindest, most magical moments I've ever experienced.
Speaker AMy eyes still fill with tears when I remember it.
Speaker AIt was just pure joy, pure magic, pure surprise.
Speaker AAnd though every nerve told me to shut down, choosing to stay open rather than retreat into fear opened the door to this miraculous moment.
Speaker AI got home safely that night.
Speaker ABut more than that, I carried with me a moment of pure human kindness that still moves me today.
Speaker ANow here are three things this taught me.
Speaker ANumber one is to trust your instincts, but know the difference between real danger and fear based stories.
Speaker AMy fear came from assumptions and late night anxiety, not actual threat signals.
Speaker AHowever, I have been in South Africa on my own when those threat signals caused me to get in my car and drive away.
Speaker ASecond, lean into safe discomfort.
Speaker ASometimes magic and genuine kindness are waiting on the other side of that uncomfortable feeling.
Speaker AGive it a chance sometimes talk to that stranger if it feels right.
Speaker AAnd third, vulnerability invites vulnerability.
Speaker AWhen I answered honestly about my favourite song and the other questions, it created a space for them to respond with openness and joy.
Speaker AHere's your tiny experiment for this week.
Speaker AThink of a recent moment when fear made you want to shut down or avoid someone, and ask yourself honestly, was this fear based on real danger or just a story your mind created?
Speaker ANow identify one small, safe way you could stay open next time you feel that familiar fear creeping in.
Speaker AMaybe it's making eye contact instead of looking away, or responding to a friendly comment instead of saying silent.
Speaker AWrite it down.
Speaker AMake it concrete.
Speaker AI know for me it's about reaching out to people and building relationships online, something I used to do so effortlessly but fills with fear now.
Speaker ASo did this story resonate with you?
