Melissa Deally:

Welcome back to another episode of health hack as I continue talking about sleep, it is literally so important that I'm going to talk about sleep for the entire month of April here in these health hacks. And today I'm talking about part two of the overall lifestyle factors that sleep benefits. And the first one is improved respiratory function and reduced risk of respiratory illness. And in fact, reduced risk of illness in general, because good sleep allows for us to have a healthy gut. And when we have a healthy gut, our immune system is also healthy because 70% of our immune system is housed in our gut. Now, it's also important that we are breathing through our nose rather than our mouth when we sleep four that improve respiratory function, improved health overall. And if you're not doing that, you want to go back and listen to my podcast episode number 100 With Sheree words, and learn what she has to say about mouth breathing and the things that you can do to overcome that. And we can, she can retrain you to learn how to breathe through your nose in many cases. The other thing that sleep helps with is detoxifying the body, which is so important in today's world with over 144,000 manmade chemicals introduced since World War Two, our body goes into detox mode overnight when we are asleep. And if we're not getting enough sleep, it can't do that job properly. And you who have been following me for a long time know that. I also recommend actual detox programs throughout the year, in addition to the fact that our body does its own nightly detox every single night. And we do want to give it the time to do that. And it does that when we're asleep. And then as mentioned, we have reduced risk of gastrointestinal disorders such as acid reflux and irritable bowel syndrome when we get more sleep, because when we're not getting enough sleep, we actually kill off the good microbes in our gut and we create an imbalance. When we're not getting enough sleep, that's often the result of stress as well. And when we are stressed out and our stress levels are too high and we're living in fight or flight that is what is actually the cause the root cause of the acid reflux. And better sleep helps to resolve that along with lowering stress.
