Welcome to the
Vesna:Peak Revival Podcast.
Vesna:My name is Vesna.
Vesna:Today I'm gonna talk
Vesna:about when the nervous
Vesna:system can't switch off
Vesna:and what you can do.
Vesna:If you feel like your system
Vesna:is reacting to everything,
Vesna:like you change your breakfast
Vesna:and suddenly you feel off,
Vesna:you try a new supplement
Vesna:that doesn't agree with your
Vesna:body, you change your routine
Vesna:and it sends you spiraling.
Vesna:It's like your body can't
Vesna:handle things at the moment.
Vesna:I am gonna explain why this
Vesna:happens and how constant
Vesna:stress can rewire your brain
Vesna:and your immune system to
Vesna:see everything as a threat
Vesna:and how to undo all of this.
Vesna:I was at a seminar the other
Vesna:day, and we're talking about
Vesna:this very topic about threats,
Vesna:because I've seen this in
Vesna:myself and in my clients.
Vesna:When little things set people
Vesna:off, when they're so reactive,
Vesna:when they're so sensitive to
Vesna:different things, like what is
Vesna:going on, and it's basically.
Vesna:the seminar that I went to was
Vesna:about psycho neuroimmunology,
Vesna:so p and i, so it's a study
Vesna:of you know, our psychology
Vesna:as it's linked to our nervous
Vesna:system and our immune system.
Vesna:So that whole system from
Vesna:what's going on up here can
Vesna:influence our immune system.
Vesna:And when someone has a lot
Vesna:of sensitivity to their
Vesna:environment or to food or
Vesna:to stresses, it can mean
Vesna:that their threat detection
Vesna:system is in overdrive.
Vesna:And I wanna talk
Vesna:more about that.
Vesna:So it used to be called
Vesna:multiple chemical sensitivity,
Vesna:but that's not really
Vesna:an accurate term, which
Vesna:has changed now because
Vesna:it's more than just.
Vesna:Chemicals in our food and
Vesna:external environment, we can
Vesna:become so reactive to little
Vesna:stresses that you wonder
Vesna:what the hell is going on.
Vesna:Okay, so I'm gonna
Vesna:talk more about it.
Vesna:So what is this?
Vesna:So it's when your
Vesna:nervous system.
Vesna:Get stuck in this overdrive
Vesna:or get stuck in high.
Vesna:And so your brain and your
Vesna:immune system start treating
Vesna:everyday things as a threat,
Vesna:as something to, trigger
Vesna:a stress response about.
Vesna:So it could be food, it could
Vesna:be supplement, it could be
Vesna:a schedule change, where
Vesna:the system detects that as
Vesna:a threat and begins all of
Vesna:this change in the body.
Vesna:so if you look at it this
Vesna:way, like you've got a
Vesna:smoke alarm in your house,
Vesna:multiple ones, right?
Vesna:But the one right near the
Vesna:kitchen, I think this one,
Vesna:the main one, 'cause it always
Vesna:goes off, but just say you've
Vesna:got smoke alarms in the house
Vesna:and they are designed to go
Vesna:off when there is a fire.
Vesna:so your nervous system is
Vesna:designed to be triggered for
Vesna:a real threat, but just like
Vesna:a smoke alarm can go off just
Vesna:when you're cooking toast, not
Vesna:burning it, but cooking toast.
Vesna:It's the same way that
Vesna:your nervous system reacts
Vesna:to very little changes
Vesna:in your environment.
Vesna:Okay?
Vesna:It starts a full
Vesna:blown response.
Vesna:So as I said, back in
Vesna:my burnout days, I.
Vesna:Experience this myself.
Vesna:So I had a lot
Vesna:of gut problems.
Vesna:I had multiple food
Vesna:intolerances and it
Vesna:didn't matter what I did.
Vesna:I did the gut repair.
Vesna:I cut out so many different
Vesna:foods I couldn't eat
Vesna:anymore, but I was still
Vesna:reacting to everything.
Vesna:And I learned back then
Vesna:that until we switch
Vesna:off the stress response,
Vesna:our body cannot heal.
Vesna:But you know, I see it in
Vesna:my clients who have multiple
Vesna:sensitivities to food and it's
Vesna:also linked with very high
Vesna:stress if someone's running
Vesna:a bigger business or has has
Vesna:a lot of responsibilities, if
Vesna:it's a female breadwinner or
Vesna:someone who just has a lot.
Vesna:On their shoulders if their
Vesna:stressor levels are already
Vesna:high and then a couple of bad
Vesna:turn of events in life and
Vesna:there's some grief and other
Vesna:things are happening, that
Vesna:person can experience this
Vesna:very thing going on where
Vesna:their system can't adapt
Vesna:anymore to the stresses,
Vesna:and it starts detecting
Vesna:everything as a threat.
Vesna:And it produces a full
Vesna:blown stress response and
Vesna:an inflammatory response
Vesna:in the body leaving you
Vesna:feeling very sensitive,
Vesna:very tired, and very just
Vesna:not even like yourself.
Vesna:So one, you've got the immune
Vesna:system dialed up, so your
Vesna:threat signals are amplified
Vesna:and your responses, like I
Vesna:said, you can react to food,
Vesna:you can react to smells, you
Vesna:can react to environmental
Vesna:changes, change in temperature
Vesna:to emotional stresses
Vesna:that is all dialed up.
Vesna:So you are overreacting
Vesna:to those things.
Vesna:But then you also have
Vesna:your immune system, which
Vesna:is also overreacting.
Vesna:So it's remembering
Vesna:threats and it's
Vesna:responding faster, and it's
Vesna:responding more intensely.
Vesna:So you get a lot of
Vesna:inflammation being
Vesna:driven in the body, and
Vesna:then we don't have that
Vesna:ability to adapt anymore.
Vesna:So our allostatic load, as
Vesna:it's called, so our body's
Vesna:ability to adapt via the
Vesna:stress response system
Vesna:or via the HPA axis that.
Vesna:Adaption is not there anymore
Vesna:because of the constant
Vesna:threats to the system, and
Vesna:so it dramatically drops
Vesna:and so then we start to
Vesna:feel stressed all the time.
Vesna:So we have a threat
Vesna:detection center.
Vesna:We have multiple
Vesna:points to kind of.
Vesna:Call a threat
Vesna:detection center.
Vesna:Right, and it's monitoring
Vesna:24 7 even while you're
Vesna:sleeping, right?
Vesna:And so we're looking at,
Vesna:the brain is constantly
Vesna:monitoring, sensory,
Vesna:psychological and
Vesna:environmental input and it's
Vesna:trying to determine what is
Vesna:a danger, what is dangerous
Vesna:for us and what is not.
Vesna:But chronic stress changes
Vesna:those settings, and so it
Vesna:goes into overprotection mode.
Vesna:And then the fallout
Vesna:is that we get
Vesna:inflammation in the body.
Vesna:you know, I just, I had a
Vesna:woman the other day come
Vesna:up to me on the beach.
Vesna:Um, she recognized me and
Vesna:she was, she's doing the
Vesna:program and she was saying
Vesna:like before she started for
Vesna:years, she wasn't able to
Vesna:wear her wedding rings, right.
Vesna:Her body was so.
Vesna:So bloated, so much fluid
Vesna:and through this process, and
Vesna:again, reducing the stress
Vesna:hormones, like switching
Vesna:off the stress response from
Vesna:this state of high and back
Vesna:into normal, you know, she
Vesna:had her wedding rings on.
Vesna:She was like, they're loose.
Vesna:And so she had really, a
Vesna:lot of that inflammation
Vesna:had fallen away, which
Vesna:was creating a lot of
Vesna:the fluid and a lot of
Vesna:the bloating, which is.
Vesna:If what happens that was gone.
Vesna:Right.
Vesna:And for other people, they
Vesna:get pain, they get fatigue,
Vesna:they get poor digestion, they
Vesna:get food intolerances, and
Vesna:they get hormonal issues like
Vesna:perimenopausal challenges or
Vesna:PMS challenges or anything
Vesna:to do with the hormones.
Vesna:The other one, the other
Vesna:fallout is the, impacts
Vesna:our mental wellbeing.
Vesna:So we get anxiety spikes,
Vesna:we get brain fog, we get low
Vesna:tolerance to change, and so we
Vesna:get stressed out by anything
Vesna:changing in our schedule.
Vesna:But then we have the
Vesna:emotional fallout, so we feel
Vesna:irritable, we feel on edge.
Vesna:So I'll have clients say
Vesna:to me, it's like, I just
Vesna:feel like I'm, I could
Vesna:just tip over at any point.
Vesna:Like I just, I feel
Vesna:like I just can't handle
Vesna:anything more on my plate.
Vesna:And it's really those words,
Vesna:it's that feeling on edge or
Vesna:feeling like you're constantly
Vesna:under attack, like things
Vesna:are just coming at you.
Vesna:Now with that said, there
Vesna:is a lot that you can do
Vesna:because we can dial down
Vesna:that stress response system.
Vesna:We can turn down the volume
Vesna:in our brain to those threats,
Vesna:so it's not overreacting
Vesna:and therefore having.
Vesna:The fallout, like the
Vesna:downstream effects.
Vesna:And the way that we do
Vesna:this is that we send safety
Vesna:signals to the brain,
Vesna:I think it's important.
Vesna:I wanna say now to preface
Vesna:that this won't be your
Vesna:life going forward.
Vesna:This is just a period
Vesna:in time where because
Vesna:you're in overdrive, you
Vesna:really need to reset.
Vesna:And so you're really putting
Vesna:yourself into a very safe,
Vesna:dull environment for a very
Vesna:short period of time in order
Vesna:to switch off the nervous
Vesna:system response, to switch
Vesna:you outta that high mode.
Vesna:So I had a client recently
Vesna:and I said to her, look, I
Vesna:could see what was going on.
Vesna:I said, look what you
Vesna:need right now, and it's
Vesna:really important that you
Vesna:do this, is that you take
Vesna:yourself away somewhere
Vesna:that you've been before.
Vesna:I said, go to a hotel wherever
Vesna:it was the last time you were,
Vesna:and you felt really good.
Vesna:You felt.
Vesna:you are relaxer.
Vesna:You are comfortable
Vesna:there, right?
Vesna:And best you can.
Vesna:Don't do too much work.
Vesna:She had to take a laptop
Vesna:with her, but I said, you're
Vesna:gonna sleep a lot, you're
Vesna:gonna get a lot of, a lot of
Vesna:sunlight, and you're going
Vesna:to do a lot of walking,
Vesna:but you're going to rest.
Vesna:And so for her being in
Vesna:a place that she had been
Vesna:previously, she was very
Vesna:safe in that environment.
Vesna:Her nervous system switched
Vesna:off and she felt, felt
Vesna:dramatically different
Vesna:when she got back.
Vesna:Right.
Vesna:She was there for a week,
Vesna:um, less than, and she felt
Vesna:dramatically different with
Vesna:what she could handle because
Vesna:the nervous system was able
Vesna:to adapt to stresses again.
Vesna:Okay.
Vesna:It was out of the high mode
Vesna:and back into normal mode.
Vesna:The threat detection
Vesna:center had.
Vesna:Tone down, and therefore
Vesna:she wasn't producing all
Vesna:that inflammation, right?
Vesna:It wasn't spiking her anxiety
Vesna:in her cortisol anymore, and
Vesna:her system could do what it
Vesna:does best, which is regulate
Vesna:itself back to homeostasis.
Vesna:But there are other
Vesna:things that you can do is
Vesna:do predictable routines
Vesna:that keep you safe.
Vesna:And so this is only for a
Vesna:period, short period of time.
Vesna:You're not gonna be
Vesna:very social, you're not
Vesna:gonna be ticking your
Vesna:big goals right now.
Vesna:Okay?
Vesna:But again, it's a period of
Vesna:time to reset and it's really,
Vesna:really important because
Vesna:the longer we stay in this.
Vesna:The more amplified this
Vesna:overprotection mode becomes
Vesna:and the more downstream
Vesna:effects that you will have.
Vesna:Okay, so this period of
Vesna:reset, which I don't think
Vesna:anyone's gonna argue, if
Vesna:you're in this place, you're
Vesna:not gonna argue on it.
Vesna:You want to feel
Vesna:better, right?
Vesna:You know that you are at
Vesna:a point where this could
Vesna:go either way, right?
Vesna:So predictable routines,
Vesna:safe routines, boring
Vesna:routines, right?
Vesna:Don't make big changes to
Vesna:your diet and lifestyle
Vesna:when it comes to dietary.
Vesna:Work with what you know,
Vesna:you can have, stick to
Vesna:the same foods, repeat the
Vesna:menu for a couple of weeks.
Vesna:It's totally okay, but stick
Vesna:to what works and repeat that.
Vesna:Okay?
Vesna:So you want to make sure
Vesna:that there's, there's none
Vesna:of those things that you
Vesna:already know as a threat,
Vesna:but then you wanna make
Vesna:sure that you take yourself,
Vesna:if you need, be into a new
Vesna:environment where you can
Vesna:just completely decompress.
Vesna:that's really important.
Vesna:The other thing is to
Vesna:release expectations, okay?
Vesna:Because if you've got a
Vesna:lot on your plate, it feels
Vesna:very hard for you to be
Vesna:able to take this time.
Vesna:But it's so important
Vesna:because you cannot
Vesna:continue going on this way.
Vesna:Okay?
Vesna:So, like I said, you're not
Vesna:gonna achieve big goals.
Vesna:You're not gonna keep up with
Vesna:your responsibilities either.
Vesna:You're gonna have to
Vesna:take that time in order
Vesna:to reset and recover.
Vesna:You could also incorporate
Vesna:stress regulating practices
Vesna:like deep breathing,
Vesna:walking along the beach,
Vesna:barefoot, grounding,
Vesna:those types of things.
Vesna:Meditation are
Vesna:really important.
Vesna:Everything that you can
Vesna:do, but what I would
Vesna:really recommend is taking
Vesna:yourself out of your
Vesna:current environment to
Vesna:a place that feels safe.
Vesna:And it doesn't have to be
Vesna:long term, but even a short
Vesna:term, because the switch
Vesna:in the environment, which
Vesna:I did a podcast on this
Vesna:just before the switch in
Vesna:your environment can have.
Vesna:Tremendous effects on your
Vesna:brain and your nervous
Vesna:system, but you want to make
Vesna:sure that the environment
Vesna:feels safe for you.
Vesna:So I would recommend
Vesna:somewhere that you've been
Vesna:before that you know feels
Vesna:good for you, that you can
Vesna:relax there, and that your
Vesna:system can really decompress.
Vesna:I'd love to hear comments.
Vesna:I mean, this isn't something,
Vesna:like I said, we are not
Vesna:going to avoid life if
Vesna:we're going through this.
Vesna:What we wanna do is reset
Vesna:the system so we can go live
Vesna:a bigger life, tick those
Vesna:big goals and do big things.
Vesna:But right now, your
Vesna:body's unable to cope
Vesna:with any of those things.
Vesna:And if this is you,
Vesna:I'd love to hear your
Vesna:comments below and let
Vesna:me know what resonated.
