Vesna:

Welcome to the

Vesna:

Peak Revival Podcast.

Vesna:

My name is Vesna.

Vesna:

Today I am gonna talk

Vesna:

about depression, and

Vesna:

depression as a message.

Vesna:

If you are wondering or asking

Vesna:

yourself, am I depressed?

Vesna:

What is wrong with me?

Vesna:

Or you ask someone who

Vesna:

struggles with depression.

Vesna:

Then in this podcast, I

Vesna:

wanna share with you some

Vesna:

of my thoughts on depression

Vesna:

and things that I know and

Vesna:

have seen over the years.

Vesna:

One of the most common

Vesna:

things that I hear women will

Vesna:

say when they come into my

Vesna:

programs is, am I depressed?

Vesna:

What is wrong with me?

Vesna:

This is not like me.

Vesna:

This must be depression.

Vesna:

What's going on?

Vesna:

Am am I going crazy?

Vesna:

The long-term effects of

Vesna:

stress and going into burnout

Vesna:

can look like depression.

Vesna:

So it's a very common

Vesna:

symptom, but it's not

Vesna:

depression and it's treated

Vesna:

very differently, but

Vesna:

sometimes it is depression.

Vesna:

And I want to share

Vesna:

some of the things that

Vesna:

I've seen or some of the

Vesna:

insights I've had over.

Vesna:

The 20 plus years I've been

Vesna:

doing this work about what

Vesna:

works for these chronically

Vesna:

low moods and I guess a

Vesna:

bit of an insight into

Vesna:

depression because often

Vesna:

depression can have a stigma.

Vesna:

And so when I see women

Vesna:

who are either medicated

Vesna:

already for depression, you

Vesna:

know, they feel like it's

Vesna:

something that they, that kind

Vesna:

of diagnosis or that label

Vesna:

that they are stuck with.

Vesna:

And as they.

Vesna:

Do some of this work

Vesna:

that I'm gonna share.

Vesna:

They come out the other

Vesna:

end and they feel very,

Vesna:

very different, and so

Vesna:

hopefully this is helpful.

Vesna:

So let's talk about the

Vesna:

biggest cause of depression

Vesna:

is the chemical imbalance.

Vesna:

Now, this has been dispelled.

Vesna:

This myth has been dispelled.

Vesna:

If you've ever seen the

Vesna:

work of Dr. Kelly Brogan,

Vesna:

she really dispelled this

Vesna:

myth and she said there

Vesna:

was no valid study ever

Vesna:

confirming depression, uh,

Vesna:

being caused by chemical

Vesna:

imbalance in the brain.

Vesna:

And she saw depression really

Vesna:

as a signal as Kinda like a

Vesna:

smoke alarm that your body

Vesna:

needs some further attention.

Vesna:

Okay?

Vesna:

And so masking that

Vesna:

with medication is

Vesna:

actually gonna continue

Vesna:

the issues underneath

Vesna:

that are going

Vesna:

to be covered up.

Vesna:

And so I'm not gonna talk

Vesna:

much about the chemical

Vesna:

imbalance because that theory

Vesna:

isn't valid and it doesn't

Vesna:

contribute to improving,

Vesna:

the quality of life.

Vesna:

So I see a lot of women

Vesna:

still on the medication,

Vesna:

still not feeling.

Vesna:

Like themselves.

Vesna:

Um, and so we wanna look at

Vesna:

the things that will really

Vesna:

make the biggest difference.

Vesna:

So depression as a

Vesna:

meaningful symptom.

Vesna:

So one of the things that in a

Vesna:

lot of my work that I focus on

Vesna:

is because chronic low moods

Vesna:

can look like depression and.

Vesna:

Those symptoms can come

Vesna:

about due to chronic

Vesna:

long-term stress because

Vesna:

it breaks down key systems

Vesna:

in the body, and one of

Vesna:

those systems is the gut.

Vesna:

And we know that there

Vesna:

is a link between the

Vesna:

gut and the brain.

Vesna:

And when the gut is

Vesna:

on fire, as they say,

Vesna:

the brain is on fire.

Vesna:

And so there's a lot of

Vesna:

inflammation that comes from

Vesna:

the gut that inflames the

Vesna:

brain, creating symptoms

Vesna:

of low mood and depression

Vesna:

and anxiety as well.

Vesna:

And so the work of

Vesna:

nutritional psychology,

Vesna:

if you've ever heard of

Vesna:

Term is really looking

Vesna:

how food can improve your mood

Vesna:

it's working on a couple

Vesna:

of different things.

Vesna:

It's working on restoring gut

Vesna:

health because the gut has

Vesna:

such a big part to play with

Vesna:

the brain, and that connection

Vesna:

happens via the vagus nerve.

Vesna:

then the other thing that you

Vesna:

wanna look at is balancing

Vesna:

blood glucose levels,

Vesna:

removing processed foods.

Vesna:

So there is a lot that

Vesna:

interferes with proper brain

Vesna:

health, but also a lot of

Vesna:

our happy brain chemistry

Vesna:

is produced in the gut.

Vesna:

and the inflammation can

Vesna:

come from the gut, which

Vesna:

is really the biggest

Vesna:

disruptor for our mood.

Vesna:

so as I said, like women who

Vesna:

come through my programs, one

Vesna:

big part of it is also doing

Vesna:

a gut restore program in order

Vesna:

to reduce that inflammation,

Vesna:

because that inflammation

Vesna:

doesn't just inflame the brain

Vesna:

that's coming from the gut.

Vesna:

It inflames the entire

Vesna:

body, so women can get.

Vesna:

Any kind of issues,

Vesna:

thyroid issues, immune

Vesna:

issues, autoimmune

Vesna:

conditions, allergies,

Vesna:

joint aches and pains.

Vesna:

There's so many

Vesna:

different symptoms that

Vesna:

can arise from this.

Vesna:

So it's a really necessary

Vesna:

part of repairing that

Vesna:

fa foundational part

Vesna:

to restore your energy,

Vesna:

mood and metabolism.

Vesna:

So looking at that, kind of

Vesna:

bringing that together, that

Vesna:

physical or that dietary,

Vesna:

we're looking at diet,

Vesna:

we're looking at gut health.

Vesna:

We're looking at

Vesna:

environmental toxins, right?

Vesna:

We are looking at stress

Vesna:

and hormonal imbalances.

Vesna:

All of those can contribute

Vesna:

to chronically low moods

Vesna:

an throw a soft balance.

Vesna:

The third one, which I only

Vesna:

just heard the other day, and

Vesna:

when I heard it, I just went,

Vesna:

yes, that is so accurate.

Vesna:

So you've ever followed

Vesna:

the work of Bashar?

Vesna:

Bashar is like a channel.

Vesna:

Uh, he's very, very good.

Vesna:

But I heard him say

Vesna:

that depression is

Vesna:

not a pathological

Vesna:

condition, but a natural

Vesna:

introspective withdrawal.

Vesna:

And he said depression

Vesna:

is compression.

Vesna:

Right.

Vesna:

So it's an, it's a

Vesna:

natural urge to withdraw

Vesna:

and go inwards, right?

Vesna:

So this compression as a way

Vesna:

of not looking for the out

Vesna:

at the outside world for the

Vesna:

answers, but to go in and

Vesna:

to find your own answers.

Vesna:

And I thought that

Vesna:

was really beautiful.

Vesna:

Way to describe it.

Vesna:

Okay.

Vesna:

And so, because society

Vesna:

doesn't allow for us to, you

Vesna:

know, be withdrawn and go

Vesna:

into this mode of just kind

Vesna:

of going inward and being

Vesna:

introspective, you know, he

Vesna:

was saying that it's, it's

Vesna:

not, shouldn't be looked

Vesna:

at as a pathology, but as a

Vesna:

time that is important for

Vesna:

someone to go inwards and

Vesna:

find their own answers to

Vesna:

what they're looking for,

Vesna:

whatever it is in their life.

Vesna:

And I thought that was

Vesna:

a really beautiful way

Vesna:

to look at it because it

Vesna:

doesn't have that negative

Vesna:

connotation and it, then

Vesna:

can be nurtured rather than

Vesna:

something to move away from.

Vesna:

Okay.

Vesna:

It can be nurtured in order

Vesna:

to find the answers that you

Vesna:

need and to have that healing.

Vesna:

And then to come

Vesna:

out the other side,

Vesna:

The fourth one is

Vesna:

understanding low moods this

Vesna:

I feel like people don't

Vesna:

actually really understand,

Vesna:

so when we're in a low

Vesna:

mood, we don't feel good.

Vesna:

Our life doesn't feel good.

Vesna:

We probably don't

Vesna:

like our relationship.

Vesna:

Maybe we don't like our

Vesna:

business or our job feels

Vesna:

like our life sucks.

Vesna:

We're in a low mood.

Vesna:

Everything looks.

Vesna:

Bad.

Vesna:

We, we don't look at things

Vesna:

in the same way as when we're

Vesna:

in a good mood or a high mood.

Vesna:

And so low moods

Vesna:

don't feel good.

Vesna:

And often when things

Vesna:

don't feel good, we, we

Vesna:

wanna try and fix it.

Vesna:

And so low moods or

Vesna:

chronic low moods can

Vesna:

look like depression.

Vesna:

Now what we have to understand

Vesna:

is that low moods are a cycle.

Vesna:

It's very normal to experience

Vesna:

low moods without anything

Vesna:

happening in your life.

Vesna:

Okay?

Vesna:

Because it's like

Vesna:

the seasons, right?

Vesna:

We have the seasons and

Vesna:

they change, and that's

Vesna:

a very normal part of

Vesna:

life on planet Earth.

Vesna:

And to not have a

Vesna:

season would be weird,

Vesna:

would probably be very,

Vesna:

disruptive to life and food.

Vesna:

And life on the planet, right?

Vesna:

So low moods is a natural

Vesna:

part of our cycle.

Vesna:

It's like the seasons.

Vesna:

We have good high moods

Vesna:

and we have low moods

Vesna:

and high, and so we we're

Vesna:

kind of going up and down.

Vesna:

We're riding the waves.

Vesna:

But when we're in a low mood

Vesna:

and we don't understand low

Vesna:

moods as being a very normal

Vesna:

part of human existence.

Vesna:

We can think, well,

Vesna:

this is my life.

Vesna:

My life just sucks.

Vesna:

Like I'm just so over it.

Vesna:

Like this problem and that

Vesna:

problem, I've gotta fix

Vesna:

it, or I can't fix it.

Vesna:

I'm gonna stay like this.

Vesna:

And so sometimes we

Vesna:

don't understand that

Vesna:

we're in a low mood.

Vesna:

We looks like it's coming from

Vesna:

our life, and then we can kind

Vesna:

of keep ourselves stuck there

Vesna:

for a long time, when really

Vesna:

we should be able to bounce

Vesna:

back up quite naturally.

Vesna:

And so.

Vesna:

We can innocently keep

Vesna:

ourselves stuck in a low mood

Vesna:

because we are resisting it.

Vesna:

like, same with a symptom.

Vesna:

If you've got a

Vesna:

symptom, if you are,

Vesna:

I wanna get rid of it.

Vesna:

What, what can I take for it?

Vesna:

What supplement, what

Vesna:

do I need to change?

Vesna:

What do I need to do?

Vesna:

If we've come so

Vesna:

hyperfocused on it, we

Vesna:

create resistance to it and

Vesna:

it's more likely to stay.

Vesna:

Okay, because we're so focused

Vesna:

and the same thing with a

Vesna:

low mood, the more we fight

Vesna:

against it, the more actually

Vesna:

we push ourselves into a

Vesna:

lower mood and it feels even

Vesna:

worse and it feels like we

Vesna:

can't get out of that hole.

Vesna:

But again, low moods are

Vesna:

part of a season, they're

Vesna:

part of the cycle and

Vesna:

they're very, very normal.

Vesna:

And we are designed

Vesna:

to, to elevate and come

Vesna:

back up to a high moon.

Vesna:

And the last one

Vesna:

is going to seem.

Vesna:

Way off, but it's based on

Vesna:

the work of Joseph Campbell

Vesna:

and the Hero's Journey.

Vesna:

And the reason I learned

Vesna:

about this years ago because

Vesna:

Joseph Campbell talked

Vesna:

about the hero's journey.

Vesna:

Like there, there's a point

Vesna:

in your life where you're

Vesna:

gonna get what he said

Vesna:

is called to an adventure

Vesna:

and it's a call to break

Vesna:

away from your life.

Vesna:

There's your spirit is pulling

Vesna:

you in another direction.

Vesna:

And quite often what we

Vesna:

do is we ignore that call

Vesna:

because I don't wanna.

Vesna:

uproot our life

Vesna:

and disrupt things.

Vesna:

And you know, it's not

Vesna:

the best, but it's okay.

Vesna:

It's gonna, I'm

Vesna:

gonna make it work.

Vesna:

Right.

Vesna:

And then there is this nudging

Vesna:

from the spirit constantly.

Vesna:

And Joseph Campbell said, if

Vesna:

we keep resisting that call.

Vesna:

Then eventually that energy,

Vesna:

that spirit that's trying to

Vesna:

push you forward, that energy

Vesna:

becomes stifled and it leads

Vesna:

to anxiety and depression

Vesna:

because we are meant to be

Vesna:

making a change and we're

Vesna:

not making those changes.

Vesna:

We're meant to be, you

Vesna:

know, following our path.

Vesna:

We're not following our

Vesna:

path, and eventually we do.

Vesna:

Eventually everyone.

Vesna:

Answers the call, as he said.

Vesna:

And then we begin the

Vesna:

hero's journey, which we

Vesna:

go through hardships and

Vesna:

challenges until we come out

Vesna:

the other side as the hero.

Vesna:

And you know, then we teach

Vesna:

others and we share our

Vesna:

experience with others.

Vesna:

And I thought that was

Vesna:

a really beautiful way

Vesna:

and it made sense to me.

Vesna:

'cause I could see people

Vesna:

in my work that, you know,

Vesna:

they were stuck in their

Vesna:

life and they really.

Vesna:

And their energy was stuck

Vesna:

and they were so burnt out.

Vesna:

They were so tired and

Vesna:

so unhappy, but really

Vesna:

they were being called

Vesna:

to make changes that were

Vesna:

really scary for them.

Vesna:

And then through our work

Vesna:

together, when they made

Vesna:

those changes, I saw people.

Vesna:

Recover from their, burnout

Vesna:

or adrenal fatigue from

Vesna:

one week to the next.

Vesna:

Okay.

Vesna:

And that is because their

Vesna:

energy was released, right?

Vesna:

It'd been stifled and

Vesna:

then it was released.

Vesna:

And I think that, you know,

Vesna:

if this is you and you

Vesna:

may listen to this, this

Vesna:

and think, Hmm, there's

Vesna:

something in that for me.

Vesna:

And if that is what

Vesna:

you're getting, that you

Vesna:

need to look into that a

Vesna:

little bit deeper, because

Vesna:

that's already a message.

Vesna:

So I hope that was helpful

Vesna:

because I know that for

Vesna:

women who come through

Vesna:

my programs that it

Vesna:

feels very much something

Vesna:

that they're stuck with.

Vesna:

But really, depression can

Vesna:

be a symptom of something,

Vesna:

you know, to look out

Vesna:

for, whether it be on the

Vesna:

physical side from our

Vesna:

health or in the bigger

Vesna:

picture of our life as well.

Vesna:

So I'd love to hear

Vesna:

your comments below.

Vesna:

What, what did you

Vesna:

take away from this?
