Hey, everybody. Welcome back to another edition of the daily Bible podcast. Glad that you're back with us. I'm still flying solo while the youth are on their retreat. And pastor rod is out there with them. They do get back today though Saturday. So be praying for safe, travel for them on the way back home. And I can't wait to hear what they have learned about and what they have studied. Um, exciting to, to, uh, to think about how God's gonna use that and continue to bear fruit. Long after this weekend's down. So pray for those things. Continue to keep them in mind. As you are thinking about them throughout the day to day, maybe some of your parents going to be picking them up, make sure that you have good conversations with the students. Talk to them about, Hey, what, what was your treat like? What'd you learn about don't settle for yes or no answers, but facilitate that discussion, ask open-ended questions. What was the best thing that you learned about this weekend? What changes do you want to make as a result of this weekend? Uh, what, what was the scripture passage that pastor rod preached on this weekend? Um, ask those kinds of questions. How was your con your, your small group time? Prob and, and B take that active interest in their lives, parents, as you. Uh, interact with them as they are coming home. This, uh, this weekend from the retreat. Uh, it is Saturday and we are getting ready for church tomorrow. And, uh, I believe it yesterday. Uh, most of you received probably an email in your inbox. That is something that we're going to start doing now, which is going to give you an update and kind of a forecast of the weekend, kind of a snapshot of the weekend, sermon out a little bit longer than what you will find in the bulletin most weekends. And then it's also going to have two other things on that. So it's going to be given a snapshot of the weekend sermon. That's going to come from me. And then you're gonna have an opportunity to download the bulletin. And so the bulletin is going to be available for you before you even get to church on Sunday digitally, if you want that. And so that'll be available for you there. And then it's also going to have our link to our compass. NTX weekend worship Spotify playlist. And so that is updated every single week. And it's updated with the set list that we sing that weekend in worship. And so you'll be able to click on that. Listen to some of that. Those songs before you get to church on Sunday, make sure number one, that you're familiar with them and just ready to worship. And so that the goal of this email, that's going to go out on Fridays. It's not an announcements email. It's not, Hey, this is what's coming up at compass. This is all about our weekend service. And it's all to facilitate and help you get ready to worship on Sunday. And so, uh, that will be hopefully in your inbox by the time that you're listening to this, that we'll have gotten there. At some point on Friday. And you will have that as a resource moving forward. As we continue to try to just improve what we do here as a church, we want to do everything that we do with excellence. And this is a way that we're trying to make that we can service just a little bit more intentional, a little bit better help you prepare to come in and worship together on Sunday morning. Well, let's get into our Bible reading for the day we are in Genesis 38 through 40. Genesis 38 through 40. And in 38, we take a break from Joseph. And, uh, what we take a break from Joseph to focus on is not great. I mentioned Rubin's not great. Well here, just Judah. And though Judah is going to produce the line of Christ. Um, Judah was not a stalwart character in and of himself. And we see that here. In this situation. And so Judah, uh, goes in and takes a wife. Uh, of Canaanite origin. And that that's not a good thing. And as a result, she, he has children by her, including earlier and Onin. Uh, and, and these proved to be wicked. Children, wicked sons. Um, and you have a situation here with a young woman named Tamar and, and earn his first born. The first born of Judah takes Tamar to be his wife and. Or ends up dying. And so then Onin is told, Hey, you need to fulfill your obligations. And this was part of the way that, that the next of kin. Worked during this time. A person's align at lineage was incredibly important. And so the way it would work is the brother of the deceased brother would go into that man's wife. And produce offspring to continue the line, the name of his brother, if his brother was not able to have children yet by her. So that's, what's being instructed here, owning doesn't do this. There's other details there. And so Judah is going to be in the wrong here because he sees that Earl and Onin are both killed and, and, and because of their wickedness, ultimately this is God's judgment being raw. And so Judah is hesitant. Doesn't want to give. His next son and that would have been Shayla to her. And so he says, why don't you wait. And this was not according to custom. This was not according to the law, that the time this was wrong of Judah. To do this. And so, uh, Tamar is left to her self to say, okay, how am I going to perpetuate the line of my two husbands? How am I going to perpetuate and be cared for myself? Because children would care for their parents. And so what she ends up doing is, again, not justifiable. I'm not trying to say what she did was right, because it's not, but she goes, and she deceives you to, uh, acting like a prostitute and basically. Uh, gets him to provide for her that the air that she was due, that, that. Judas son should've provided for her in place. And so it's a. It's a messy scene. The title of this chapter for me is just bad, bad, bad, more bad. And then at the very end good. And the reason why at the very end good is, uh, this whole messy situation of the death, of the taking the wife from the Canaanite woman and then the death of earth, the death of Onin, and then the deception by Tamar. And then what Judah does with Tamar. all results in the end, in something that's not awful because this is like I mentioned the line of Christ. And so if you look all the way down to verse 29, Uh, tomorrow is going to give birth to twins. And the one of the twins is a man is going to become a man name Perez. Okay. Perez is the one that is going to perpetuate the line of Christ. So we talked about it yesterday, even in the infighting in Joseph's family, God is still doing things. God is still in control. God is still working. Even here in the midst of all of this badness in this evil, in this wickedness, in this. Uh, this immorality and chapter 38. God is still working. God is not going to be bumped off of his, his will. His plan is not going to be derailed. By the sinfulness of mankind, but that's, what's happening here in chapter 38. This is a glimpse into, what's going to be the line of Christ. And, uh, Judah is the, the head of the line of Christ. The line of Judah, right, is what Jesus is going to be called. And this is a little bit of a scene into how that line is perpetuated. It's not pretty. It is not pretty, but Perez is going to be the one that's going to perpetuate the line of Christ. You can look at Matthew one three to see that Matthew one, three. Alright, Genesis 39. Uh, then we shift back to Joseph. All right. So we're, we're back with Joseph. Joseph finds himself in Potiphar's house. Potiphar's the one that is, is, uh, this Ishmaelite caravan had sold him to. And so Pottipher had Joseph as a slave and as an extension of the Abrahamic covenant, because Joseph is one of the sons there in that line, God blesses Pottipher for all that he has, uh, for, for Joseph's sake. And so anything that that is happening in Potiphar's house seems to be going well. And that leads Potter to say, Hey, this seems to be as a result of this. There's Israelite slave that I have. So he promotes Joseph. And this is going to be a common theme in Joseph's life. This promotion, God blessing him. And at least his promotion. And unfortunately it also leads to his being noticed by Potiphar's wife. Uh, Potiphar's wife begins to try to seduce Joseph and she is pursuing him. And, uh, in, in, in. And wants to do all kinds of wicked things. And basically. Um, Joseph continues to resist and he resists to the point to the point that she finally orchestrates a situation wherein, um, she's going to be able to be alone with him, and she thinks that it'll work at that point. Uh, Joseph's integrity remains intact. Uh, that's the key word in this chapter is integrity. Joseph's integrity to remain remains intact. And she then humiliated and angry accuses him of trying to force himself upon her. And, uh, he is taken and put in jail as a result. And, uh, it's interesting here. I have to imagine Potter for understood the type of woman that he was married to. Uh, because if this was. Any other man, and this was truly the situation that had taken place that he had tried. This, this Israelite slave had tried to force himself upon. This man's wife. I don't think that Joseph is living after this. I think part of her has to save face. I think part of her has to, uh, defend his wife's character, even though she's not worthy of it. And so I think that's why Joseph finds himself in prison and not dead. Uh, that in God's obvious provision and protection of him, but Joseph finds himself in jail with really no opportunity to think that he's getting out. This is not the American jail, uh, or American judiciary system. He can't appeal to anyone he's not getting out of this situation. So while he's there, while he's in prison, again, God's blessing him and God blessing everything that, that Joseph touches basically. And so the jailer notices Joseph's blessings again, because of what, because of the Abrahamic covenant God's blessing those that, that bless Joseph got his. Is that, or that, that bless him, that bless his people. And so that's why things are going well. So the jailer promotes Joseph and even give some charges. We're going to see here in the next chapter, over a few of the inmates and. Um, Yeah, this is just an interesting chapter. One thing of note that struck me this time, reading through a story that I've read multiple times, it's familiar to us. Uh, is in verse 39. A lot of times we think of David when we think of David's sin against Bathsheba. When David says in his prayer and Psalm 51, He says against you and you alone. Have I sinned? And we think of David as an example of somebody who understood the gravity of our sin being first and foremost against God. But here Joseph understands the same thing. Joseph has speaking to Potiphar's wife, as she's trying to seduce him. And he says in verse nine, he is not greater in his house than I am, nor has he kept back anything from me, except you, because you are his wife. And we expect him to say, how could I sin against him? Just like you expect David to say, how could I I've I've sinned against vast Sheba. I say, I've sinned against Uriah. I've sinned against all of these people. But instead David says I've sinned against God. Look at 39 9, Joseph says, how then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God? Joseph's passion for his integrity was connected to his relationship with God that's who he was concerned. About sending against not against a part of her, even though that would have been sitting against Pottipher, but, but really he was saying, man, I'm I don't want to sin against God. So Joseph's integrity. He's a commendable man, for sure. In so many different ways. Chapter 40 then, like I said, Joseph has given charge over two of the prisoners in particular, one being the cup bearer, the other being the baker. And they both have dreams and they both tell the dreams to Joseph. And one is favorable that for the cup air, Joseph tells the cup bearer, you're going to be restored to your position. You're going to be. I brought out of the prison and you're going to be the King's cup air again. And he says, remember me, remember me when this happens and sure enough, it, it happens. He is promoted back to his position. Although we're going to find out. He doesn't remember Joseph. Uh, and then the other one here is the baker. The baker kind of thinks, oh, well, this guy's dream was good. Well, what about my dream? And he tells his dream to Joseph, but for the baker, unfortunately, things are not going to work out in his favor in the same way. Uh, Joseph says to the baker, you know what, you're going to be executed. Uh, actually things are not going to go well for you and sure enough. That's exactly what happens there. And the tragic. A note of. Of chapter 40 is verse 23. Yet the chief cup bearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him. And in verse one of chapter 41, which I know is tomorrow, but just know it says after two whole years. And so for two years, Joseph is going to left, be left in prison and, and forgotten. Uh, not by God, but by the cup bearer, God's going to remember Joseph and we'll see what happens there in the next chapter. As we jump in there tomorrow. But let me pray. And then we'll be done with this episode of the daily Bible podcast. God, we are grateful that you are sovereign even over the mess in life. And so we want to trust you. We want to be men and women of integrity as Joseph was in chapter 39. We want to be so passionate about our godliness and our holiness. Not. Uh, for, for other reasons, but, but ultimately, because it is first and foremost about our relationship with you. It's about our, our witness. It's about our. Uh, our intimacy with you and sin interrupts and breaks and Mars, all of those things. And so we want to be holy people because you are a holy God. So help us Lord to consider the gravity of our sin and to focus on being men and women of integrity. We pray as we ask this in Jesus name. Amen. R I'll keep her in your Bibles tune in again tomorrow for another edition of the daily Bible podcast. Back.
