Today's episode is taken from our new podcast, Driving Test Tips, which is based around the top 10 reasons that people fail their driving test. However, the content of the episodes, isn't just for learner drivers as we hope that it will help drivers who want to build their confidence, fill any gaps in their knowledge, or maybe have a light bulb moment while they're listening. So our next topic. Is incorrect positioning when turning right at junctions. And funny enough, I asked you at the end of the last episode, should we not be covering this? And you said, no, it's a fault all of its own so tell us a bit more Kev So the incorrect positioning when turning right at junction So this is all about your positioning when turning right. So let's think of this as we are approaching a roundabout, there's two lanes and we want to turn right at that roundabout. And as you approaching that roundabout, you find yourself in the left hand lane to turn right. We've checked the mirrors. We're signaling, right. And all of a sudden, we're now in the left hand lane to turn right. And what's happened is, people behind us or people in front of us were going, where are you going? Your road position, is being confusing. No one really knows where you're going, cuz your road position is telling you one thing. And your signaling to say another. And no one really knows what's going on. So, yes, you might have people behind you going what's happening, but also people on the roundabout as well, waiting to join, they're going, I ain't got a clue where you going? Is this like the straddling thing? So when no, this will be where you are actually in there's two dedicated lanes there. And we're in the left hand lane to turn right at aroundabout. Okay. So you're in the wrong lane. You're in the wrong lane. Okay. Yeah, so, that's basically we're in the wrong lane to turn right to do what we wanna do. Yeah. So again, One of the ways to get around this is cancel the signal. If it's not safe to turn right. What can I do? Get out of the situation either follow the road ahead. So you need to cancel the signal. Or put the left signal on to turn left. And get out of that situation, find some where to turn round and come back again to Carry on your way but again it might well be too late and the fault might well have occurred already. So, you know, sometimes we can't get out of that situation with the fault occurring, cuz we might have been adding confusion to others already. So another way, we can get a faulted for this is when we wanna turn right into a side road and what's happened is we are too far to the left of our lane. And we have to wait for oncoming cars to go past and what's happened is the cars behind us can now not come up the inside of us, there was space for us to stay on the right hand side of our left lane, to turn right and there was space for people to come up by inside of us to carry on their journey. But what's happened is we've now blocked the road and nothing can get past us, until we've turned right. And if there's oncoming vehicles, we're just holding up the traffic for no reason at all really? Yeah. Okay. And so on some roads, this is what happens anyway, cuz there's not room for two cars. So this is specific to the roads which are wide enough for two cars. Exactly. Yes. That's what you need to. Do you need to position your vehicle? One to keep the flow of the traffic moving. If we need to stop, stop. Wait for a gap and then go again, but we don't want to be positioning so that we block the road. Yeah. If that makes sense. So, yeah. So what we need to do is to. If it is one of those situations where there is a, you might find like a little, lane in the middle of the road that you need to get into to turn right. If you are not in that lane, you've now blocked the road. Yep. That makes sense. So another way as you might get faulted for this is when you are coming to the end of a road, a T junction. You want the merge to the right. And basically we're in a position where we're turning left. And we need to be turning, right. What's happened is your road position again is being Confusing to others but this isn't not a roundabout This is a T junction So very similar situation, but two different situations where one's a roundabout one's a T junction and sometimes this happens. On, uh, one way streets as well. Ah, yeah. So you got two lanes and a one way street, you can go left or turn to the right. If you're turning right, you can move over to the right hand side of the road because nothing's turning in to that road. But some people do it from the left hand side. And then there's obviously cars come up the right hand side and now we're stuck. So you can causing confusion. This is what happens where, you in the wrong position at the end of a T junction or the end of a road. And you're merging onto a new road. And basically, yeah, you are in the wrong road position. Yeah. So if there's enough space for two cars, make sure you position to leave space for two cars. And that one about one way streets again, that was immediate. Like, ah, yeah, I can think of two examples locally. Here where it is a bit confusing, cuz it feels like you're on the wrong side of the road, but you're not. It's a one way street. So again, that's another one that people can think, right? Where are the one way streets? Where does that happen at the end of the one way street? Where if I wanna turn right, I need to be on the right hand side and wanna turn left, be on the left hand side. Those are ones you can. Practice mentally. Really easily, can't you. And sometimes there's no road markings as well. So it is about recognizing. The signs in that situation, which will come onto later, I feel. Yeah. Okay. So yeah, so. Summarize in this, when you're turning right. Just make sure your road position mirrors what you want to do. So if you are turning right into a side road, Make sure your road position tells people. If you're turning right roundabout. Make sure you in the right hand lane. Yep. Lovely. We hope you found that useful. If you did, don't forget to share it with others or leave us a review.
