Michael Cross

Welcome to Red Dirt Dnd I'm Michael Cross and I play Elias Stone, a human cleric.

Connor Shennold

I'm Connor Chennault. I play Sable, a half elf rogue.

Johnnie Payne

I'm Johnny Payne and I play August E. Gramore, a human fighter.

Kyri Hester

I'm Carrie Hester and I play Moxie Tiefling bard.

Brook Bullock

And I'm Britt Bullock, your dm. Please join us as we explore the Curse of the Clockwork City.

Brook Bullock

The town of Gearport lies at the edge of the ocean, nestled in a valley of the foothills of the Southern Mithspeare Mountains, whose jagged peaks loom in the distance like the teeth of some ancient Diana the the people of Gearport are a hearty folk, shaped by the rugged landscape and the relentless demands of the river and mountains. The river serves as the town's lifeblood, powering mills and factories and providing trade routes for merchants traveling down from the highlands or up from the southern seas. Fishermen ply their boats along the calmer stretches while blacksmiths, canners and factory workers labor near the water's edge. We see a young boy with piercing blue eyes and hair that's deep brown like rich soil, the boy flicking his fingers, making a tiny arcane flame dance across his palm.

Connor Shennold

Look mother, look.

Brook Bullock

His mother, Clara, laughs softly while his father Ashton, wipes oil stained hands on his work apron and smiles proudly.

Johnnie Payne

Well, maybe you won't have to piece things together with oil and gears to try and keep them running.

Brook Bullock

Ashton and Clara share a look of hope and happiness.

Kyri Hester

Well, you two fixers go get cleaned up for supper.

Brook Bullock

The sun has dropped below the Mistspire Mountains now casting a soft, beautiful golden glow that quickly deepens and darkens to shadows. Night falls quickly across the town of Gearport. In the black of night a sudden volley of stars streaks over, but not over, rather into the small town. And not stars, but hundreds of flame tipped arrows crash down onto buildings and boardwalks. At home the sounds of nature are silenced by the stomping of boots as the dwarven army of Baranthadius Ironclad marches into the flaming town. Clad in dark spike armor, their forms seem to blend with the earth itself. These dark dwarves marched as one, their disciplined ranks undisturbed by the uneven terrain. The blackest night in Gearport is no hindrance to the darkness found in the mountains of the Dark Dwarves. Away from the darkness we see the boy with the piercing blue eyes running his hand tightly gripping another fleeing child, nearly pulling him off his feet. Who says?

Kyri Hester

Elias.

Kyri Hester

Elias, my house is.

Connor Shennold

I know Gil. Mine too. My dad threw me out the window as it happened. He said run. So we have to run, Gil.

Brook Bullock

We see a quick montage of Elias stumbling with a handful of other survivors across an arid, dusty landscape. We see a city on the horizon and riders coming out to meet them, offering water. Next, a lonely stone building and narrow hallways. An orphanage, and the overlapping time lapse of images of children and their distant voices as the years pass. Now we see a different building. Kalamera Medical Academy is etched above the archway. The blue eyed boy, now a young adult, his brow furrowed in concentration as he stitches wounds and applies poultices. A mentor nods with approval.

Brook Bullock

You have a real talent for putting things back together, Elias.

Michael Cross

His hand hesitates. Thank you, he says. But we sense the weight of haunted memories and wounds that needle and thread cannot heal.

Brook Bullock

In a different part of the world, we see a city. And within that city a warm, inviting light from a cozy tavern. A crackling fireplace fills the room. The scent of roasted meat and freshly baked bread wafts through the air. Inside we see the bustling tables and one lone gentleman sitting, enjoying a mug of ale. The door swings open and three guards of the City Watch approach the man at the table.

Michael Cross

Evening, August. Mind if we join you, Sergeant Vance?

Brook Bullock

The three guards sit down, forming a semicircle around August at the table.

Michael Cross

I think you know Specialist Laura Galdrum. And of course you know Reynard.

Connor Shennold

Should have known we'd find you in a happy spot like this, Augie. Do you sleep in the light too?

Kyri Hester

Oh, shut up, Reynard. August, we've been watching. You got potential.

Michael Cross

Your name is in for a promotion. You gotta admit, Specialist Graymore has a good ring to it.

Connor Shennold

And think of the perks for yourself and for your friends.

Johnnie Payne

I appreciate Captain Croft's recommendation. She seems like a fine captain and it has been an honor serving under her.

Michael Cross

Yeah, Captain Croft, bless her heart. She mains well. But the best service doesn't always come from just doing the right thing.

Johnnie Payne

What do you mean?

Kyri Hester

We have a group that takes care of the things that Croft can't see or doesn't want to see.

Connor Shennold

And sometimes people help us help them. Sometimes we blend the rules a bit.

Johnnie Payne

You mean thieves, guilds, bribes?

Michael Cross

That's a harsh word. Think of it more like ensuring stability. We make sure things run smoothly, make sure people at all levels get what they need.

Johnnie Payne

I'm not interested in breaking the law. I joined the City Watch to uphold it.

Kyri Hester

Listen, August, you don't want to stay some low ranking guard forever, watching the world pass you by. All the good that you want to do will never get done.

Connor Shennold

Augie, come on. I kill for an opportunity like this. Think of all those perks.

Kyri Hester

City Watch can be a hard place for those who don't play along. If you don't have friends, you might never make specialist.

Johnnie Payne

Is that a threat?

Michael Cross

It's reality. We can help you. Either you're with us or you're not.

Johnnie Payne

I'd rather stay a low ranking guard than compromise my integrity.

Connor Shennold

Captain Croft's idealism won't pay the rent. Like the sergeant said, which side do you want to be on?

Johnnie Payne

I want to be on the side that stands for justice. If that means staying where I am, so be it.

Brook Bullock

Sergeant Vance and Laura exchange glances, a hint of frustration in their eyes.

Kyri Hester

You're being naive, Private. The world doesn't work the way you think it does.

Johnnie Payne

Maybe not, but it won't change unless someone tries to make it better. And that's what I intend to do.

Brook Bullock

Sergeant Vance gives August a final, lingering look.

Michael Cross

Don't think too long, Gramore. Opportunities like this don't come often. Promotions will be announced in two days.

Connor Shennold

Don't say we never tried to help you out, Augie. Come find us when you make your decision.

Johnnie Payne

I've made my decision.

Brook Bullock

The trio stands and each of them slides a silver piece across the table, coming to rest near August's mug. As they leave, August remains resolute, staring into his mug. The tavern's noise fades into the background as he contemplates his decision and a pathway lying before him. A few days later, our scene changes and we see a small military style courtroom. It's a testament to military justice and inquiry. At the far end of the room is a large desk made of dark polished wood, its front panel adorned with the silver inlaid emblem of a hippogriff, flying over a pair of scales symbolizing justice and the rule of law. Approximately 15ft back from the center of the room are two small council tables facing the judge's desk but offset to the left and right. The tables are sleek and functional but also crafted of a rich wood, complementing the authoritative ambiance of this courtroom. Seated at one of the tables is Sergeant Vance. To the right of the judge's desk is a small gallery of seats enclosed by a low wooden railing. Seated there are two figures, Specialist Laura Galdrum and Private Reynard. Bright sunshine streams through the high, narrow windows, creating angles that purposefully illuminate the center of the room, emphasizing the piercing sense of inquiry that fills this place. Currently standing in the center of the room is August E. Graymore, the seriousness with which military justice is administered is obvious, ensuring that all who enter understand the weight of the proceedings that take place within its walls. Captain Croft sits at the judge's desk. Her expression is one of disappointment. A heavy pouch of silver coins has been emptied before her, along with two parchments that rest ominously on the desk.

Kyri Hester

What do you have to say for yourself, Private Greymoor?

Johnnie Payne

Captain, I swear I have never taken a bribe in my life. This has to be a mistake, Captain.

Connor Shennold

Your Honor, I saw how nervous he was when he saw me seeing him take those coins from his locker. Sorry, old Augie thought we was friends, you know.

Brook Bullock

His eyes narrow slightly as he looks.

Michael Cross

At August upon Private Reynard's concerns. We searched Gramore's footlocker, ma'am. We found that tally of receipts hidden in his footlocker. The last entry in expectation for the same amount of silver found in the pouch.

Johnnie Payne

I don't know how they got there. Someone must have planted them. And I've never seen that log sheet before today.

Michael Cross

Accusing not just one, but three of the gods as liars is a serious implication, August. Do you have any proof at all? Any alibis, friends?

Johnnie Payne

No. But I am innocent. Someone is setting me up, Captain.

Kyri Hester

When Sergeant Vance asked me to tail Private Greymoor, I was doubtful. He's always been loyal to you in the Watch. But I know what I saw and what I wrote. Private August E. Greymore exchanged packages and coins with known members of the Sapphire Society. I was shocked.

Johnnie Payne

Captain, you know my record. You know I wouldn't do something like this.

Kyri Hester

August, the evidence is damning. Your record has been exemplary up until now, but this. I can't ignore the evidence and testimony from your lockermate and two of your superiors.

Johnnie Payne

Please give me a chance to prove my innocence.

Kyri Hester

I want to believe you, August, but the trust of the City Watch is paramount. Without clear evidence or alibi to the contrary, I have no choice but to rule based on this evidence.

Johnnie Payne

Captain.

Kyri Hester

I'm sorry. August, you're dismissed from the City Watch effective immediately.

Brook Bullock

He picks up a seal and stamps the discharge papers with a thud. Reynard Vance and Laura exchange satisfied glances as August stands there, devastated.

Kyri Hester

Mr. Greymoor, please remove your badge and gloves and place them on the desk.

Brook Bullock

Croft looks intently at August's face, glances over at Sergeant Vance and then slowly picks up the gloves. Then, without warning, she slaps August violently with the gloves across the left cheek and then back across the right.

Kyri Hester

I command you to keep these. That is, if you truly love justice. Then every time you look at them, remember what you sacrificed and reflect on how you could have saved this city.

Connor Shennold

Captain, I must protest that emblema.

Kyri Hester

Burn this man hotter than any branding. Private Renard, escort this civilian out of our halls.

Brook Bullock

August E. Greymoor takes one last look at Captain Croft, but toward turning and walking out of the office, his head held high despite the tears welling in his eyes.

Connor Shennold

I told you you should have accepted our offer.

Johnnie Payne

You won't get away with this. I will prove my innocence, expose you for what you you are and tear it all down.

Connor Shennold

We'll see about that.

Brook Bullock

Stepping outside to the hallway and our camera zooms in to the gloves at the belt of civilian August E. Greymoor. We see the gloves of the city watch tucked within a belt and as our camera moves back we see August E. Greymoor on a horse outside of the city of Ironspire. The road winds before him, 20ft wide, hard packed, well traveled and safe. It's definitely one of the better ways to travel. The tiny caravan of three carts slowly stir the dirt into the air, just high enough to be annoying. Two farmers, each with three or four children and one merchant, do their best to stay as close to this figure as possible. But then again, protection and safety, that's what they're paying him for. Most of the time. The five or six children in the group cling to the rails of the three merchant carts, but as children do occasionally, they must burn off a burst of energy and squeal like goblins in some made up game. Two hillsides gently rise to the east and west. They're gradual slopes, about 20 or 30ft high, but taking nearly 100 yards or so to reach the apex. A gradual curve lies up ahead. The prairie land around them is tall with the grasses of summer, maybe nearly three feet. In this caravan we also see another traveler and he looks like.

Michael Cross

Well, you see a man in his mid to late 40s, brown hair now streaked with gray, a long coat that's sleeveless actually and is underneath is a long blue button up shirt with arm cuffs. Sitting up on the front with the driver, you see Elias Stone as just a humble doctor on his way to ironspire.

Brook Bullock

The driver next to you says, and so you're telling me they just like showed up with like catgut?

Michael Cross

Yeah, so that's basically how you, you sew people up. It's pretty much you just use that it's thinned out and use it as.

Brook Bullock

Thread so anybody could really learn how to do it then.

Michael Cross

Now with the cat gut you must understand that what we're talking about is sewing up Somebody so that they're not going to bleed anymore. You don't want to sew up the wrong things and sewing the wrong body parts to other things. It takes a lot of learning for it. It took me five years of university training at Calimera to learn all the practice I'm doing. I turn over to the guy on the horseback and I say, excuse me. How much longer do you think it's going to be till we get to Iron Spy?

Johnnie Payne

You'll be there in time for supper.

Michael Cross

Excellent. Well, it's been a good ride. I've gone and turned over to the rider. Driver said, you've done really well. This has been a real smooth ride. I. I figured it'd be a lot more bouncy.

Johnnie Payne

I will say these two hills we're coming up on have me a little worried, especially with this curve. But that's why they pay me to do what I do. And they pay me more whenever I have children with us.

Michael Cross

I certainly am glad to have someone of your caliber along for the ride.

Johnnie Payne

Are you coming to Ironspire permanently?

Michael Cross

I actually don't know. For right now, it's only to visit. Do you know where the Ningahe Temple might be?

Johnnie Payne

Yes, yes, of course.

Michael Cross

Once we get to there, if you could point me in the right direction. I'm supposed to go there for some reason or other.

Johnnie Payne

So you say you're not sure if you'll be here temporary or not.

Michael Cross

Right. I just got sent here and I'm kind of on a mission, I guess from the goddess.

Johnnie Payne

It's a long way to travel for a man in his 40s. If you're not going to settle down and stay.

Michael Cross

Oh, I'm actually used to traveling. I go wherever healing is needed.

Johnnie Payne

Well, I go where the opposite is needed.

Brook Bullock

There's a low hum that kills the air and back over behind you guys to your right, up maybe 300, 400ft in the air. You see this dirigible coming, moving at a smooth pace, but obviously one that's much faster than walking with carts and horseback. And the late afternoon sun shining on it. And bits of reflection of maybe copper wiring that goes up around the balloon part of it. It passes you and is heading toward Ironspire. August, you know, probably to dock at one of the raised fires of the city.

Johnnie Payne

Children run, hide, get in the carts before it sees you.

Brook Bullock

And the kids are like. And they all scamper and run and, like, get around on the cart, jump back up on the cart. A couple of them getting in the way. Like maybe they Dash right in front of the horse and you know that type of thing as students of any age are wont to do when a vehicle comes by.

Michael Cross

You sir, are a cruel, cruel man.

Johnnie Payne

Yes, I suppose I am.

Michael Cross

I'm not used to seeing the dirigibles quite as often.

Johnnie Payne

I see.

Michael Cross

They seem to be more and more.

Johnnie Payne

Every now and then they do travel out further in recent years. Yes, but I grew up under these.

Michael Cross

Oh, you're from Ironspire.

Johnnie Payne

Oh yes. Yes I am. He rests his hands on top of his legs, letting one thumb brush along the glove that's hanging from his belt. Yes, I've. My whole life is here.

Michael Cross

I've heard a lot of tales of it. I've never actually been here myself, but I'm kind of excited to see the larger city. Kalamara is not tiny, but certainly can't compare to Ironspire by any means.

Johnnie Payne

I would say it was half of my life before I could even say. I've been all over the city. That large. You're in for quite a sight at this point.

Brook Bullock

You guys are. The hills have kind of risen up just a tiny bit on each side. Again, tall three foot grasses of the prairie. You're coming into that curve a little bit. Did I hear you say that August was being attentive?

Johnnie Payne

Yeah, his eyeball on the hill. Yes.

Brook Bullock

Well, let's find out how August is getting paid. Let's find out how attentive he is.

Johnnie Payne

Roll man.

Brook Bullock

Perception check, Mr. Elias from Hero Points and Inspiration. Your role's already been determined. You weren't paying attention at all. You have a four from Scott Wise out there and.

Michael Cross

Thank you Scott.

Johnnie Payne

12.

Brook Bullock

A 12.

Johnnie Payne

Yes.

Brook Bullock

Very good. You catch some movement over on the left hand side of this slope. It's almost like part of the grass moved independently of everything else.

Johnnie Payne

I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name.

Michael Cross

My name's Elias Stone.

Johnnie Payne

Elias. I'm August. Excuse me. And I will have my horse slow down. The wagons pass and I shift over to the left side and speed up to see what's happening in the graciel areas.

Michael Cross

Is he at a new point? Getting within reach of me?

Johnnie Payne

I'm imagining I was. I imagine you were sitting on the.

Brook Bullock

Edge of the cart and I was riding.

Michael Cross

I quickly and give guidance to you.

Brook Bullock

That slow down and then letting them pass and coming back up on the other side gives you a slightly different angle. And you can see on the right hand side there is some humanoidish brownish. Are those scales of figures too that have some type of leather strap and grass stuck to it, you know, attached, fixed, fit. They're hiding in this tall grass off to the right hand side. You saw movement on the left a moment ago, but now you can definitely spot two creatures that are there.

Johnnie Payne

So I'm on the other side of the caravan. I want to speed back up by Elias. You notice that he's not looking at you at all. And he says, in your endeavor to heal, do you also have the ability to defend?

Michael Cross

I know how to fight. Don't worry about it. What's going on?

Johnnie Payne

Just be ready. And I'm going to turn my horse into the direction of one of those groups.

Brook Bullock

There you go. You want to choose the left hand side or the right hand side?

Johnnie Payne

I'm imagining that I'm on the left side, so I'm going to jut to the left side.

Brook Bullock

Let's roll for initiative.

Johnnie Payne

What'd you get, Michael?

Michael Cross

Four.

Johnnie Payne

I got six.

Brook Bullock

From the left hand side, a kobold with grass and stuff fixated onto the top of his head and wearing some type of tattered, stringy clothing pops up just enough. You can just see his head above the prairie land grass. He bursts forth, and a half second later, another two jump up from the other side. On the right hand side, the one that you see first freezes for a millisecond and a surprise chatter and hiss fills the air. Either one of you speak draconic?

Johnnie Payne

Not draconic. Common Darvish. An elf.

Michael Cross

Okay. Common Orc. An Elvish.

Brook Bullock

There you go. So some type of hissing chatter thing happens. And so the two on the right hand side, on the other side of the cart, they both fling out nets toward the children on the cart.

Johnnie Payne

But I told the children to get inside and they didn't.

Brook Bullock

They're hanging off the edge of this merchant's cart, right? So one of them misses with a seven. The other, the other one misses with an eight. So the nets fall short of the cart. The one on the left hand side throws a short spear and misses completely with a four.

Michael Cross

How many are there now?

Brook Bullock

There are three. One on one side, two on the other.

Michael Cross

Good, good, good. Which side did he go to?

Brook Bullock

And you're on the left.

Johnnie Payne

On the left. Like, if we're going this way, I'm on the left side of the wagon.

Brook Bullock

A spear got thrown at you that he just like barely chunked it like five feet. Like the grass is in his way or something. He can't get a good fling on this thing.

Johnnie Payne

Okay, stop the train. Stop the train. I'm literally gonna get off my horse, take a few sidesteps to the side of it and pull this very large sword off my back and just cock my head to the kobold that maybe I have their attention. Go away. Shoot.

Brook Bullock

And is that some type of intimidation? Check.

Johnnie Payne

There's definitely some. Something there.

Michael Cross

I was figuring intimidation. That's why I was hoping that you could use that for your D4.

Johnnie Payne

Yep. Intimidation.

Brook Bullock

Okay. Indeed.

Johnnie Payne

Sixteen.

Brook Bullock

That one just. He seems frozen in what he's doing and doesn't move.

Johnnie Payne

If I wanted to move. Action. Sure. I'll go stand right beside him.

Brook Bullock

Okay. Moving.

Johnnie Payne

And look at the other one and wave my hand go.

Brook Bullock

Oh, on the other side.

Johnnie Payne

Yeah.

Brook Bullock

Okay. So yeah, you can move over that way. You're about 10ft from the ones on the right hand side. Right. Very good. And we'll find out how they react in a minute.

Michael Cross

So he's on the side with one or the side with two.

Johnnie Payne

So I was standing away from one. I walked up right next to that one and turned towards the other one and told him to get away too.

Brook Bullock

Oh, gotcha.

Johnnie Payne

That's what I did.

Brook Bullock

Okay, very good.

Johnnie Payne

So it's like I told him to go. He's just like, ah. And it's standing there. Well, I'm just gonna go walk up next to you, scruff your hair, grass hair and tell the other one to go.

Brook Bullock

Very good. So August has walked right up to the edge of the road on the left hand side to the one that he intimidated. And now he turns back to the two that have popped up on the right hand side. Elias is in the cart with the driver, the merchant that's there. There's some kids hanging off the back. You're probably about 15ft away from the two that are there on the right in the grass.

Michael Cross

And I'm going to just, you know, I. I'm just going to do a true strike crossbow attack at one of them and try to go for a like a wounding, not an actual kill shot.

Brook Bullock

Yeah.

Michael Cross

With true strike, I can use my spell casting ability and attack for damage. So. And I purposely missed. I did. Because I rolled a nine.

Brook Bullock

So try and do a warning shot.

Michael Cross

Yeah.

Brook Bullock

So that misses our car drivers. Two of them stay calm, cool and collected. No worries. But one of the farmers in the back panics. He's like, it's cobalt. And he whips his horse and comes roaring down on the left hand side of the other two that are there. August has gotten off of the road and so this cart comes rolling by. And that's the actions of our cart, folks. Back up at the top of the round. The two kobolds that you tried to spook or scare with a warning shot. They pull the ropes back in. Then they both take a run to the left so they're more lined up with the cart with all the kids. And they roll again with a natural 20 and then a modified 16. And this time they're lined up and these nets circle around two separate kids. Cinch tight. And then they yank hard. Our children rolled a 5 and a 19. One of the kids hangs on to the edge of the cart and doesn't get pulled off. But the other one gets yanked off onto the ground. And in a moment that kobold's probably going to start pulling that net back up. Over on the left hand side where Johnny went up and said hi to the one kobold. He again is just standing there. When a larger kobold pops up out of the grass right beside him and just hisses and chatters at him saying something. Doesn't sound very nice. It seems to shake this intimidated kobold out of its stupor a little bit. And they both pull out some daggers and rush at you. Does a 14 hit?

Johnnie Payne

No.

Brook Bullock

Okay. Goes swinging by the other. Intimidated one kind of gives a half hearted like stab. Doesn't really get even get close to you for it to be dangerous. But a half hearted stab. It's your turn.

Johnnie Payne

What's happening with the kids in the net.

Brook Bullock

The other one probably on the other side of the cart. You may not be super perceptive about what's happening. Those kobolds have thrown like nets with cinch ropes. The carts took off and one cart of the three has taken off. It's stormed by you. Two carts are here.

Johnnie Payne

Is the back cart still there?

Brook Bullock

The back cart is the one that panicked and went ah, kobolds. And went roaring by the other two.

Johnnie Payne

Okay. Standing here nearly in between these two kobolds. I'm going to put my other hand on the hilt of this sword. So I'm now holding it with two hands. However it is upside down. I'm going to raise it over my head and thrust it into the ground. Flick my fingers again for them to go away. And I'm going to walk around to the back of the last cart. And I'm going to reach between the sidewall of the cart and the crate that's sitting there and grab a pole and pull and pull and retrieve my halberd and start walking towards the net.

Brook Bullock

Okay.

Johnnie Payne

And I'll take all that as one action.

Brook Bullock

Yeah.

Johnnie Payne

Because it was a lot. Yes.

Brook Bullock

Yeah. That works.

Johnnie Payne

Okay. If this Kobold wants my greatsword. Pull it out of the ground, Dr. Stone.

Michael Cross

Okay, so one child's being pulled up by a kobold.

Brook Bullock

Yes. Two children hanging on the merchant's cart have been ensnared. One of them has been ripped off of the cart and is fixing to be pulled along the ground. The other one was able to hang onto the little knobby wooden sides and resisted the huge tug from this kobold. Okay. But both of them are ensnared.

Michael Cross

Seeing that the kobold has one of the kobolds has the children ensnared enrages me. And I say, august, take off the kids. And I'm going to cast toll the dead on the kobold that has it. So I need a wisdom saving throw.

Brook Bullock

A wisdom saving throw. That is a modified five.

Michael Cross

Okay. He has not taken any damage. So he's going to take one D8 of damage. He's going to take one of Necrotic. Necrotic.

Brook Bullock

You see us a small blackened circle kind of form on its shadow. Very tiny.

Michael Cross

And that is it for me. As I go, I'm going to go to the child and try to pull them back. I mean, obviously, I can't do anything.

Brook Bullock

Right. Right. So then from there, you move over to the child that's on the side of the cart or the.

Michael Cross

Yeah, no, to the one that's in the net.

Brook Bullock

The one that's. There are two in the net. One just happens to be. Hang on. Yep. Okay. The one that's on the ground. You're moving over toward them. Right. Very good. The kobold that has the child in the net that fell. That's on the ground. He starts pulling. Makes a very impressive strength check to pull this child along the ground, kind of leading it out of your reach and right up to himself. He then takes the rope and spins it around the net, immobilizing the kiddo. The one that took the damage from you gives another tug on his rope, ignoring you. This little kid on the cart is evidently very, very strong. Or this kobold is very weak. Like, no way he can't get him off. He tugs three or four times and cannot get this child loose even though it's enveloped in a net. One of the merchants, the merchant you were talking to, Dr. Elias, is like, starts, what do we do? What do we do? What do we do? What do we do? The farmer that's right behind him and his wife that are there, they're like, the kids, the kids, the kids. And they start. Come here, children. And they're like gathering the kids get on here. Get on here. That might have just been, you know, messing around or whatever. So the second in our initiative, the kobolds on the left, the leader looking, one that popped up and the first one that August saw. They decide to ignore you. And they also pull out nets and fling them at the farmer's cart where the children are starting to gather. One of them misses and the other one misses, too. They just don't have the range on these net things as they try to grab kids.

Johnnie Payne

Okay, and it's your turn. I'm going to continue over. There's a kit and a net. Yes.

Brook Bullock

Well, on the other side of the cart. So you've pulled your halibut out from between boxes. You could walk around.

Johnnie Payne

Is there just the one?

Brook Bullock

There's just the two kobolds on your side. Two kobolds on the other side.

Johnnie Payne

Are they standing close together?

Brook Bullock

The ones on the other side are fairly close together. They're within five feet of each other.

Johnnie Payne

The ones that have the net with the kids.

Brook Bullock

The ones that have the net with the kids. The one that Elias hollered to you about.

Johnnie Payne

Very good.

Brook Bullock

Walk around that back cart.

Johnnie Payne

Well, I was at the back cart, pulled it out, turned towards them, and I'm walking to them. Do I make it to them?

Brook Bullock

Yeah, they're only about 15ft away.

Johnnie Payne

I'm firmly gripping this pole and swinging it still ahead of them.

Brook Bullock

Okay, which one? The one that's tugging on a net or the one that is binding a child up inside the net?

Johnnie Payne

Let's go with the first one you said.

Brook Bullock

Okay, net 29.

Michael Cross

Your turn.

Brook Bullock

It's on there.

Johnnie Payne

It's on there. Okay, 14 points of damage. And then I. On a hit. The second creature takes the halberd damage. So 17.

Brook Bullock

Holy moly.

Johnnie Payne

Points of damage. I swung my halberd, hitting the both of them. The edge of the head of the halberd sliced through one of them and buried itself in the other. As I turn to Elias and say, cover your eyes, children. You don't want to see this. And pull the halberd out and pivot to the two kobolds that I've been trying relentlessly to get to leave.

Brook Bullock

Very good. The leader perhaps is high enough up on the little incline that he's able to see over the wagon. And he sees this for sure. And of course, the other one is clueless. He's been clueless the whole time. But, yeah, he sees that. The two bodies wobble there for just a moment and then just crumple. It is now Elias, turn.

Michael Cross

Well, I would say that you probably have this well in hand. Why don't I get the kids out?

Johnnie Payne

Get the kids.

Michael Cross

I'll get the kids. Get the kids out. Yeah. If you need me, you just. Well, I don't think you're gonna need me.

Johnnie Payne

No, you.

Michael Cross

You do. Yeah. Thank you, August.

Johnnie Payne

My pleasure, Elias.

Michael Cross

So I'm going to use an action to get the kid out of the net.

Brook Bullock

Yes.

Michael Cross

And then try to get them toward the caravan.

Brook Bullock

Very good. Very good. The cartriders, the one merchant and the farmer and his wife have gathered up the kids. And they look like they also are fixing to take off whenever this snickersnack happens. And the farmer just is like, oh. And the wife screams at the bloodshed and the gore of what's going on with that. The merchant that was with Elias, he has pulled out a very large dagger out of his belt and is ready to defend himself, watching the. You guys have this well in hand. Back up to the top of the initiative round. The leader looking. One ducks down in the grass and appears to be gone. The other one that is standing there, Mr. Clueless along those lines. He doesn't seem to notice that the leader behind him has scampered away. And he's pulling the net back up one more time to throw it again with a three. He entangles himself so it's all up in his arms again. Sure. It goes like two feet right in front of him. The others are dead. It's your turn. You're on one hillside. He's across the road about 20ft away on the other hillside.

Johnnie Payne

Okay. I'm going to pass by the last cart and put my halberd back inside pole first, leaving the head out tripping and walk unarmed over to the greatsword that I plunged into the ground next to the kobold that got himself caught in his net. And I'm going to and then kind of bump him with the toe of my boot. And I'm just gonna turn and look over my shoulder at the pile of bad mess over there.

Brook Bullock

He doesn't really see what you're looking at, but then he looks around too, and you see it in his eyes. It's like, ah. Cause he realizes he's all alone.

Johnnie Payne

And I'm going to pull my sword out of the ground and walk back to the caravan.

Brook Bullock

Okay.

Johnnie Payne

And that's my turn.

Brook Bullock

Very good, Elias.

Michael Cross

I'm gonna also get all the kids in and get up on the front and I will hold out my crossbow, tour him. If he makes a move toward us, but he's coming back. So I think we're probably going to be able to move smoothly. But I just want to make sure.

Brook Bullock

Awesome. Holding that action. If this thing makes any type of move toward August, you're going to shoot him. And again, the cart drivers and the merchant, they basically have frozen kind of in time. The children are crying a little bit and hiding, squealing. The one kobold that is left sees what's happening, ducks down into the grass and apparently scampers away.

Johnnie Payne

Elias, do you remember earlier I told you they pay me more when there's children on the caravan? They didn't used to be. So they would pay me more if the merchandise being carried was important. Wine, fine meats. So I told them to pay me more when there's children on the caravan, not to protect their meadow with a pork. And that's the corruption that you're heading to right now in Ironspire.

Michael Cross

Sounds like you know your way around Iron Spire.

Johnnie Payne

You could say that.

Michael Cross

I think you and I might be able to help each other out when we get to Ironspire.

Johnnie Payne

Oh, an unfamiliar face could be useful.

Michael Cross

I agree.

Brook Bullock

The small caravan reunites with the panicked farmer that took took off and arrives without incident the rest of the way to the western gate of Ironspire, the high walls encircling it, the Ocean bay being its defense on the eastern side. And as you approach the gate, August, you see a familiar face. For one of the guards at the city gate happens to be Specialist Reynard.
