Melissa Deally:

Welcome back to another episode of health hack as I continue talking about sleep, and why it is so important to your health, and there is a direct correlation between sleep and weight management. So one of those connections that I want to talk about today is that getting the right amount of sleep allows us to better regulate our appetite. Because our hormones are better regulated and the hormones I'm specifically talking about our leptin, our satiety hormone, and gray Lin, our hunger hormone, and when we have the right amount of sleep, the Leptin hormone is better produced and better able to function as it gets suppressed with lack of sleep. When we are tired, our body needs energy. And we get energy from food and from sleep. And not only is our satiety hormone suppressed, we're also looking for quick energy. And so what happens is we tend to go for food with quick energy, unhealthy foods that are high in sugars, etc. And on average, we consume an additional 200 calories per day when we haven't had enough sleep. Now that calculates out to 73,000 extra calories per year when we're only getting five to six hours of sleep per night. And that results in an extra 15 to 20 pounds of weight gain in the year. So if you are struggling with weight management, could it be one of the reasons be because you are not getting enough sleep? And in reality, that's a pretty easy fix. You just need to decide to prioritize your sleep. And if you need help with that, reach out I've got lots of tips and tools to help you
