Speaker:

Hello and welcome to the Intermittent Fasting Gems with Jen Podcast.

Speaker:

I'm your host Jen, a middle-aged Michigan mama, wife, and teacher who

Speaker:

in 2021 stumbled upon this crazy cool thing called intermittent fasting.

Speaker:

And before I knew it.

Speaker:

I've lost 46 pounds in four months and gained an incredible lifestyle

Speaker:

filled with complete food freedom.

Speaker:

If you're hungry for unique, no nonsense fasting tips that actually

Speaker:

work, you're in the right place.

Speaker:

So whether you're walking the dog, folding that last load of laundry or cruising to

Speaker:

your nine to five, let's start fasting.

Speaker:

Our way to freedom together.

Speaker:

welcome fasting friends.

Speaker:

Today we are chatting with Meredith Doro, who lives in Davison, Michigan.

Speaker:

Hey, Meredith, how are you?

Speaker:

I am good, Jen, how are you?

Speaker:

Great.

Speaker:

So Meredith, uh, has a beautiful family.

Speaker:

She is married to Jeff for 29 years.

Speaker:

She has a son and a daughter who are both married.

Speaker:

She has a grandson named Asher and another grandson on the way in December.

Speaker:

So Meredith and I, we actually go way.

Speaker:

Way back.

Speaker:

Way

Speaker:

Uh, we graduated from high school, Kearsley, Hornets class of shout

Speaker:

out class up to 1993, so you guys can all do the math on that.

Speaker:

Well, let's see.

Speaker:

I'm gonna be 50 in a couple weeks.

Speaker:

How about you?

Speaker:

Ha.

Speaker:

Did.

Speaker:

am, I

Speaker:

You turn 50.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

So Meredith and I played basketball and volleyball together.

Speaker:

Meredith was a lot better than me, but, uh, we played together in school.

Speaker:

We had so much fun in the early nineties.

Speaker:

And, um.

Speaker:

Meredith is also one of the OG members of my So what if with Jen Facebook group,

Speaker:

uh, that I started in February of 2022 and I have been wanting and bugging Meredith

Speaker:

to jump on the show with me for a while.

Speaker:

So I'm super excited that you're here.

Speaker:

So welcome Meredith.

Speaker:

Let's just have a super fun time chatting about how you make

Speaker:

intermittent fasting work for you.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

right.

Speaker:

So I like to start off by asking, um, what have been your top three wins with

Speaker:

intermittent fasting, whether that's weight loss or any non-scale victories,

Speaker:

like improved sleep or more energy?

Speaker:

Go ahead, Meredith.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

I'm gonna say number one was losing weight.

Speaker:

I lost like 30 pounds when I first started.

Speaker:

incredible.

Speaker:

over a year.

Speaker:

I, you know, have had two kids.

Speaker:

After the first kid I was early twenties and boom, it melted off.

Speaker:

I was in a bikini in two or three months.

Speaker:

Second child, no.

Speaker:

Did not happen.

Speaker:

And

Speaker:

then.

Speaker:

busy and just kept convenience things and not, you know, not

Speaker:

watching what I was eating.

Speaker:

And I um, after COVID was up to almost what I weighed after when I

Speaker:

was pregnant with my second daughter, or with my daughter, pregnancy.

Speaker:

you sound like me.

Speaker:

oh my goodness.

Speaker:

And so that I lost 30 pounds and I was back to almost what

Speaker:

I weighed in high school.

Speaker:

That's awesome.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

was the first thing.

Speaker:

Second was controlling my appetite.

Speaker:

Like I would just, would have say there's donuts in the teacher's lounge.

Speaker:

And I was, I was down there.

Speaker:

Now I'm like, I don't, I don't need that.

Speaker:

I'm not hungry.

Speaker:

So,

Speaker:

Yeah,

Speaker:

controlling my appetite throughout the day is a lot easier.

Speaker:

absolutely.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And making smarter decisions with food, like, do I really want that?

Speaker:

Is

Speaker:

really

Speaker:

it?

Speaker:

helps you get in tune, uh, with those appetite signals in your body.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah, it is just, and it's just the way we do things and everybody knows it.

Speaker:

Everybody's like, oh, are you eating?

Speaker:

My husband does it.

Speaker:

My husband is.

Speaker:

Six foot two, a hundred and seventy five pounds.

Speaker:

He runs five to eight miles a day.

Speaker:

He's super skinny.

Speaker:

He's like, I feel better when I do intermittent fasting.

Speaker:

And he doesn't even need to.

Speaker:

He just does it 'cause he feels better.

Speaker:

Yeah, I saw, I saw some pictures of him recently and yeah, you, he

Speaker:

is very thin and so did he start doing intermittent fasting along

Speaker:

around the same time that you did?

Speaker:

He did.

Speaker:

He just thought, if I'm,

Speaker:

You're gonna eat that?

Speaker:

and eat that, that, that time, it's easier.

Speaker:

And so he tried it and he is like, oh.

Speaker:

It was like almost like a game between us, like who can go longer?

Speaker:

And then,

Speaker:

I love that.

Speaker:

and, and then we're eating the same things at the same time.

Speaker:

It's just easier 'cause we're empty nesters

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

the two of us.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

So that would have been, I'm, I'm thinking I started the

Speaker:

group in February 20, 20, 22.

Speaker:

Is that around when you started?

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Very good.

Speaker:

and he started also, our daughter went away to college in 2020,

Speaker:

and just, it was just the two of

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

for most of the time.

Speaker:

And, uh, my mother-in-law got started doing it.

Speaker:

I, I spread it.

Speaker:

I.

Speaker:

Good for you.

Speaker:

You go, girl.

Speaker:

Does she still do it?

Speaker:

Uh, yes, she does.

Speaker:

She is,

Speaker:

I love it.

Speaker:

we're working through some things, but she's, she still does it.

Speaker:

Oh, very good.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

So you said weight loss, appetite, um, kind of control correction.

Speaker:

I jumped in there.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Do you have a number three for me?

Speaker:

making smarter decisions with actually what I put in my mouth.

Speaker:

Love it.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And you just feel, feel good.

Speaker:

So you want to make those smarter choices, you know?

Speaker:

If I had to do a number four, I, I've always had lots of energy, but the

Speaker:

energy and the time that I have, 'cause I don't have to prepare a breakfast

Speaker:

'cause I don't eat breakfast and I have a lot of energy all day long.

Speaker:

So those are also bonuses.

Speaker:

It gives you a lot more kind of space in your head, and like you said, extra

Speaker:

time and to not have to worry about what am I gonna make for breakfast, what am

Speaker:

I gonna make for lunch, you know, and snacks and all of that throughout the day.

Speaker:

So That's awesome.

Speaker:

All right, Meredith, so what would you say has been, or is your, your

Speaker:

main or your preferred intermittent fasting method or schedule?

Speaker:

Like is, are you mostly omad?

Speaker:

16. Eight.

Speaker:

What works best for you?

Speaker:

Meredith?

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

more of like a 18 six and 'cause of the way my schedule is, so like I

Speaker:

eat dinner five or six at night, and then my lunchtime isn't until noon.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

So it works well with school.

Speaker:

And then I'll throw in Omas.

Speaker:

Like yesterday I did a omad,

Speaker:

Oh good.

Speaker:

Yeah, and I love that you're mixing it up and I think that really does,

Speaker:

uh, you know, make a big difference.

Speaker:

So, okay, so let's say you're 18 six.

Speaker:

What would be like basically your fasting hours?

Speaker:

Um.

Speaker:

um, so after dinner like 6:00

Speaker:

PM

Speaker:

noon the next day.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

And you, because you said you eat lunch at school right?

Speaker:

With,

Speaker:

Yeah,

Speaker:

your colleagues.

Speaker:

schedule

Speaker:

Perfect.

Speaker:

and it's around noon.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Yeah, that sounds really good.

Speaker:

Um, do you use any kind of a fasting tracker app?

Speaker:

Like, I know we, a lot of us use that life app forever and,

Speaker:

I

Speaker:

um.

Speaker:

the Life app and then I also have Fast Minder.

Speaker:

Oh, that's a new one.

Speaker:

I haven't heard.

Speaker:

Can you fa two words Fast Minder?

Speaker:

Fast minder.

Speaker:

No, it's one.

Speaker:

It's

Speaker:

It's actually

Speaker:

well, they're fast.

Speaker:

The F and the M are capitalized.

Speaker:

But it's all one word on the like app

Speaker:

App Store.

Speaker:

the app,

Speaker:

That's all.

Speaker:

I, okay.

Speaker:

The uh, big question.

Speaker:

Is it free?

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

pay for anything.

Speaker:

I'm cheap.

Speaker:

No, that's okay.

Speaker:

I, I, I like the free ones too.

Speaker:

I've been using Easy, fast, and I know a lot of other people in the group

Speaker:

too, and I, I like it, it's fine.

Speaker:

Um, but I always like to hear about other ones too, and I

Speaker:

have not heard of that one.

Speaker:

Fast Minder, all one word.

Speaker:

You said the F and the M are big.

Speaker:

Does it have a certain color, the icon for the app?

Speaker:

It's

Speaker:

It's green.

Speaker:

and it,

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

a, it has a clock on it.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

So what, what would you say you like most about the app?

Speaker:

Is it simple?

Speaker:

Is it, you know?

Speaker:

It is simple,

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Easy to

Speaker:

and um,

Speaker:

use.

Speaker:

it will go into like health, um, data from your phone and stuff if you

Speaker:

Oh, sweet.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

track, can keep track of hydration, your weight, your steps if you want it to.

Speaker:

So everything, you pretty much need all the basic stuff.

Speaker:

That's great.

Speaker:

So it does, um, kind of pair with your, your phone, you said,

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

if you want to.

Speaker:

Awesome.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Let's move in to the tough stuff.

Speaker:

So, um, we all have challenges.

Speaker:

What would you say is your biggest challenge with intermittent fasting?

Speaker:

Um, mine would be that on a Oma day not to like overeat and be like, oh, I'm

Speaker:

get to eat, and I shove because like.

Speaker:

I was, sometimes I'll use, um, your, your drink concoction of your cayenne and

Speaker:

A CV drink.

Speaker:

Okay, Uhhuh.

Speaker:

And then, so a lot of times I'm not prepared enough where I have that made,

Speaker:

so I'll get a handful of nuts, right?

Speaker:

So I

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

a, a bowl of nuts that I pre-make.

Speaker:

Uh, and then I

Speaker:

I find

Speaker:

on like, oh, I just did like

Speaker:

myself,

Speaker:

handfuls.

Speaker:

Like, why did I just do three handfuls?

Speaker:

I'm nuts.

Speaker:

and.

Speaker:

Then

Speaker:

nuts.

Speaker:

I know.

Speaker:

And then on my meal, I'm like, okay, well I'm only eating one

Speaker:

meal so I can, it's like too much.

Speaker:

'cause you're, you're like, oh, it's only

Speaker:

Only one.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's definitely a minder ahead thing, for sure.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

overeating or eating poorly, I'm like, oh, well I'm only eating this.

Speaker:

We're out to eat and I'm eating at Chick-fil-A.

Speaker:

What kind of a, what kind of a meal can I get?

Speaker:

I'm only eating one meal, but then making smart choices at that time.

Speaker:

No, that makes sense.

Speaker:

That makes sense.

Speaker:

So, alright, so let's talk about, um, so eating and fasting windows.

Speaker:

Let's, um, talk about fasting first.

Speaker:

So do you, pretty much, would you say you fast clean?

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

So,

Speaker:

have anything but water and coffee

Speaker:

okay.

Speaker:

And it's obviously just black coffee, I'm assuming.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

When I first started fasting, um, you, when you first started, I, you put tips

Speaker:

on, 'cause I, I hated black coffee.

Speaker:

I,

Speaker:

me too.

Speaker:

chocolate, chocolate mocha, whatever I could put in it.

Speaker:

And it was more like a hot chocolate.

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

for three, the first three weeks I started intermittent fasting.

Speaker:

I put salt in my hot black coffee.

Speaker:

Choked it down, and then after three weeks I liked it.

Speaker:

Now all I, all I drink is black coffee no matter what.

Speaker:

Yeah, and you do you stick with the salt then?

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And salt really does work, doesn't it?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I don't know what it does.

Speaker:

It cuts the bitterness and I had to do the same thing and it, it

Speaker:

took me two to three weeks as well.

Speaker:

And now I just love my black coffee.

Speaker:

But, um, okay, so your water, plain water, black coffee.

Speaker:

Do you do any, um, sparkly mineral water?

Speaker:

Are you a fan or not A fan?

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

I'm not a fan.

Speaker:

It's so funny.

Speaker:

the the A VC drink, but

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

choke.

Speaker:

I choke it down.

Speaker:

I still don't like it.

Speaker:

I, well, I, I like the plane.

Speaker:

For me, it's, I just love it because it, for some reason, it really helps

Speaker:

me curb that kind of hunger, pain.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

but I would not use the plane.

Speaker:

Are you using the plane in the a CB drink?

Speaker:

'cause that is

Speaker:

like a

Speaker:

nasty.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Alright.

Speaker:

So that's what I recommend.

Speaker:

But yeah, some people have a difficult time with it still.

Speaker:

It's, it's, it's grown on me and it does, you know, it's just kind of what

Speaker:

you get used to, but it's the same time.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Some people struggle with that.

Speaker:

How about an electrolyte supplement?

Speaker:

Have, have you used that in the past or do you, you know, use any type of supplement?

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

I haven't, take a lot of supplements, but not electrolytes especially,

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

because my husband's a runner.

Speaker:

mm-hmm.

Speaker:

a lot and he takes salt tablets.

Speaker:

Uhhuh,

Speaker:

if

Speaker:

I'm feeling

Speaker:

like, um, I'm getting a headache or I need something, I'll take salt tablets.

Speaker:

okay.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I haven't really experimented with the, I've seen it, I've seen it on.

Speaker:

The website I've seen on different things about electrolyte supplements, but no,

Speaker:

I've just, I've done the salt tablets.

Speaker:

and you do have to be careful with those because some of them,

Speaker:

if they're flavored especially, they've got a lot of crap in 'em.

Speaker:

You know, sugar and stuff.

Speaker:

I do like the raw unflavored ones, but they're a little bit pricey.

Speaker:

The element when I first was starting.

Speaker:

Uh, that absolutely helped me kind of push up, bump up to that, you

Speaker:

know, 20 hour mark, which was really quite difficult in the beginning.

Speaker:

And now, um, I only take, I do like one a week because I take

Speaker:

it when I do an extended fast.

Speaker:

So if I do like a 36 hour from like Sunday until Tuesday afternoon, I

Speaker:

take it usually around 20 or 22.

Speaker:

Hour mark and it, I don't know what it is, but it's like magical and

Speaker:

it helps kind of push me through.

Speaker:

But, um, I get what you're saying about the salt and my husband got some just like

Speaker:

mineral salt, some really good quality and I've been putting that in my water

Speaker:

in the morning when I wake up and just drinking, um, a cup of that with the salt

Speaker:

and before my, even, before my coffee.

Speaker:

And it does seem to be, be definitely helping.

Speaker:

I think it helps with the headaches and things like that for sure.

Speaker:

So.

Speaker:

And he goes into, um, like.

Speaker:

Different things where muscle contraction.

Speaker:

And honestly, even he has, um, if he's, he's really low.

Speaker:

He actually hallucinates honestly.

Speaker:

Wow.

Speaker:

Oh, that's so crazy.

Speaker:

Oh my goodness.

Speaker:

guy

Speaker:

guy was carrying,

Speaker:

suitcase and I know it's not real.

Speaker:

And I'm like,

Speaker:

wow.

Speaker:

yeah.

Speaker:

I'm gonna have to talk to Jeff about that.

Speaker:

So

Speaker:

How, how old is.

Speaker:

and he is fine.

Speaker:

Alright, my fasting friends, here's the deal.

Speaker:

Sometimes technology stinks.

Speaker:

Unfortunately we had a malfunction, uh, with our audio, um, recording.

Speaker:

And so the second half of our interview is just me, and so I am going to do.

Speaker:

A recap of all of the awesome points that Meredith gave us.

Speaker:

So I apologize.

Speaker:

Still learning this podcast stuff and, um, unfortunately, like I said, we had

Speaker:

a bit of a, , technology., Failure.

Speaker:

So, okay, so I, I asked Meredith her favorite foods and she talked about

Speaker:

two of her favorites from Costco Sweet Potato Chips, um, and Unreal

Speaker:

Chocolate Coconut Treats, which I will leave the links to both of those.

Speaker:

In the show notes.

Speaker:

I also asked Meredith if she knew what her longest fast was.

Speaker:

She wasn't super sharp, but thought maybe around 40 hours.

Speaker:

Her favorite recipe from my.

Speaker:

Intermittent fasting recipe site.

Speaker:

She almost every week makes my, homemade runny ranch dressing.

Speaker:

Um, so that's a popular recipe that I have.

Speaker:

I will definitely leave that, uh, as well in the show notes.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

And I'm not sure if I mentioned earlier that Meredith is a chemistry teacher.

Speaker:

Her husband is also a teacher.

Speaker:

They actually teach at the same school.

Speaker:

Um, so that's kind of cool.

Speaker:

They were like the cutest high school sweethearts ever.

Speaker:

Um, it was, they're just adorable.

Speaker:

So, Meredith enjoys breaking her fast with bone broth.

Speaker:

And we talked a little bit about exercise.

Speaker:

She, um, her and I actually have caught up at the crim road race,

Speaker:

which is a really cool 10 mile road race that they do in our hometown,

Speaker:

which is Flint, Michigan every year.

Speaker:

So, um, I've seen Meredith there.

Speaker:

Several times over the last several years.

Speaker:

, So she does enjoy running, but also she has, her and her husband have the

Speaker:

subscription to the formerly known beach body, which is now just body, I believe.

Speaker:

Uh, so she does some strength training and, um, other workouts

Speaker:

from that, uh, s system.

Speaker:

And one other thing she mentioned, which, uh, I wanna definitely check out.

Speaker:

She has been reading the book and enjoying the book fast, like a girl.

Speaker:

I recently picked that book up as well, and it talks about women who

Speaker:

are going through changes, uh, like.

Speaker:

Both Meredith and I are as, I'll be 50 in a few days and

Speaker:

Meredith has recently turned 50.

Speaker:

So those hormonal changes and um, so I will.

Speaker:

Leave the link for that book in the show notes if you want to check that out.

Speaker:

Again, everybody, I'm so sorry that, we had technical difficulties, but be

Speaker:

sure to look for the matching blog post.

Speaker:

I will have all of.

Speaker:

Meredith answers, to all of her podcast questions so you can

Speaker:

get all of the awesome details in that matching blog post.
