Speaker AIt's connection that makes a difference.
Speaker AAnd taking the time to build relationships, to reach out to others is so important, not just for our mental health, but for our physical health as well.
Speaker ASo stay tuned for all the tips and tricks around community building for yourself in this week's Choosing Happy Podcast, foreign listeners, and welcome back to the Choosing Happy Podcast.
Speaker AI'm Heather Masters, and I'm guiding you today on a journey to a more joyful, connected, and meaningful life.
Speaker AAnd if you're new here, thank you for joining me.
Speaker AI do appreciate my listeners, and if you're a regular listener, welcome back.
Speaker AWelcome home.
Speaker AToday we're diving into a topic that's close to my heart and I think essential for our times.
Speaker ABuilding a community of happiness.
Speaker AThe power of connection.
Speaker AComing together in a world that feels like it's splitting apart.
Speaker ASo grab your favorite drink, settle in, and let's explore how we can create more joy, connection, and belonging together, even when the world feels like it's becoming more divided.
Speaker ALet's start by looking at why community matters for happiness.
Speaker AI mentioned it in the introduction.
Speaker AI'll tell you a secret.
Speaker AIt's not just about feeling good.
Speaker AIt is about thriving.
Speaker ADecades of research, including that famous Harvard study on adult development, show that strong relationships of a single biggest predictor of happiness and longevity.
Speaker ANot money, not fame.
Speaker AIt's connection.
Speaker AWhen we share our lives, our joys, our stories, and even our struggles, we create a sense of belonging and purpose that is impossible to find alone.
Speaker AThat companionship is everything.
Speaker AAnd here's a science bit.
Speaker AWhen we connect with others, our brains release feel good chemicals like dopamine and oxytocin.
Speaker AAnd that's why a simple smile from a friend or a heartfelt conversation can lift your whole day.
Speaker ABut let's be honest, it's a bit challenging today.
Speaker AAnd building a community isn't always easy.
Speaker ABut I do get a sense that when I speak to people, there's a huge wave of people who want to build new communities, who want to return to physical lives, away from the digital, away from the technological.
Speaker AAnd we live in a world that sometimes feels like it's pulling apart.
Speaker AYou know, technology connects us, but it can also make us feel more isolated.
Speaker AAnd there's differences in opinions, differences in backgrounds, and differences in Beliefs that can create walls instead of bridges.
Speaker AAnd it's noticing those differences that actually causes a separation.
Speaker AIf we focus much more on what we are like, then things would change completely.
Speaker ASo how do we come together when the world feels so divided?
Speaker AThe answer is intentionality.
Speaker ABuilding a community of happiness means reaching out, listening deeply, being compassionate, and creating spaces where everyone feels seen and valued.
Speaker ALet's take a look at some practical ways to build a community of happiness.
Speaker ACreating meaningful rituals.
Speaker AIf you think about starting a weekly or monthly tradition, maybe it's a Sunday brunch or a monthly book club, or even a standing zoom coffee date with a friend.
Speaker ARituals give us something to look forward to.
Speaker AThey help create habits and they strengthen our bonds.
Speaker AWe notice when that ritual is no longer there.
Speaker AIt's much better if we can do something face to face.
Speaker AEven if you're on your own and you're making a date with yourself in a coffee shop where you know there'll be people milling around, that connection doesn't have to always be that one to one, but just the energy of having other people around can make a difference.
Speaker AVolunteer together.
Speaker AYou know, find a cause you care about, invite others to join you, or find a volunteering group that not only helps others, but also brings people together around a shared purpose.
Speaker AYou can also organize interest based gatherings.
Speaker AStart a group around something you love, like gardening, like a book club, like writing.
Speaker AThat's my biggest connection.
Speaker AHiking, cooking, or even board games.
Speaker AI mean, one of the things I'm looking at doing are creating AI dinners where we physically, physically get together in groups to discuss the future of AI and how we can use it for the betterment of humankind.
Speaker AShared passions create natural opportunities for connection.
Speaker AAnd you can never know what comes out of a new network of people.
Speaker APractice deep listening when you are with others.
Speaker APut away your phone, put away all the tech, take your headphones out, put them away and be absolutely present.
Speaker AJust be listen.
Speaker ANot just to respond, but to truly understand, to really be present.
Speaker ATo put aside your thoughts, to put aside your judgments and just be present.
Speaker AListening and present.
Speaker AAnd this simple act can massively transform your relationships and build new relationships as well.
Speaker AYou know, I'm always on about celebrating.
Speaker ASo don't let achievements, big or small, go unnoticed.
Speaker ACelebrate together.
Speaker AIt could be a promotion, a birthday, it could be grabbing a glass of wine on a Friday after a tough week.
Speaker AWhatever it is, it could even be celebration.
Speaker ACelebrating movie night, celebrating getting the lawn done between rain showers.
Speaker AWhatever it is, celebrate.
Speaker AReally build joy and happiness into your week in a way where you communicate and connect with others.
Speaker AEmbrace diversity.
Speaker AInvite people from different backgrounds and different perspectives.
Speaker AThe more diverse your community, the richer your experience will be.
Speaker ABe and allow others their opinion.
Speaker AAllow them to be who they are.
Speaker AThat's the most important thing.
Speaker ALife would be really boring if we were all the same and we all had the same opinion.
Speaker ASo allow others theirs.
Speaker AAnd if you've got any projects, collaborate on them.
Speaker AFind people who will work together to create something new or to solve a problem that you've identified.
Speaker ACollaboration not only builds unity and gives everyone a sense of ownership, the results tend to be 10x.
Speaker ASo here's an exercise the Connection Challenge it's time for our little Choosing Happy challenge, and here's how it works.
Speaker AThink of someone you haven't connected with in a while.
Speaker ACould be a couple of months, it could be a couple of weeks, or it could be a couple of years.
Speaker AAnd reach out.
Speaker AIt could be a quick text, a phone call, or even a handwritten note and share something positive with them.
Speaker AMaybe it's a memory, a compliment, or just a simple thinking of you.
Speaker AIf you're feeling inspired, invite them to join you in one of the rituals or gatherings or something on the list we've just talked about and notice how you feel after reaching out.
Speaker AOften the simple act of connecting can brighten both your day and theirs.
Speaker AAnd speaking of community, I'd love for you to become an even bigger part of the Choosing Happy family.
Speaker AI'm launching an online group for AI, but also I'm considering launching an online group for Choosing Happy.
Speaker AI do have a space.
Speaker AI haven't really, really put time into it, but I'd love to connect more with listeners and hear your stories and let you suggest the topics.
Speaker AI'm considering hosting monthly virtual meetups and a little happy hour for happiness seekers.
Speaker AAnd if it's something that interests you, please do say so in the comments.
Speaker AReach out and let me know.
Speaker AFinally, let's wrap up with a gentle reminder that building a community of happiness doesn't require grand gestures.
Speaker AIt's about showing up, being present, and creating space for others to do the same.
Speaker AStart small, reach out, celebrate together, and above all, keep Choosing Happy together.
