Speaker:

Welcome to the Peak

Speaker:

Revival Podcast.

Speaker:

My name is Vesna and today

Speaker:

I'm going to talk about

Speaker:

mind over food and how

Speaker:

your thoughts influence

Speaker:

your physical symptoms.

Speaker:

Have you noticed that at

Speaker:

times, and maybe if you're

Speaker:

in this place right now,

Speaker:

where you become very

Speaker:

focused about what you're

Speaker:

eating, maybe you're very

Speaker:

strict about what you're

Speaker:

eating, maybe it's not

Speaker:

just your diet, maybe it's

Speaker:

your exercise routine, and

Speaker:

even though you're being

Speaker:

very strict and watching

Speaker:

everything you do, you

Speaker:

still don't look or feel

Speaker:

the way that you want,

Speaker:

maybe you still have gut

Speaker:

symptoms or symptoms

Speaker:

or tiredness, and it's

Speaker:

very frustrating for you

Speaker:

because you're doing

Speaker:

all the right things.

Speaker:

I remember years ago

Speaker:

in my journey, I could

Speaker:

see the link between my

Speaker:

thoughts about what I

Speaker:

was eating and how my

Speaker:

body processed that food.

Speaker:

And there is a scientific

Speaker:

link in our body

Speaker:

which I want to talk about.

Speaker:

The reason why this is so

Speaker:

important is because one

Speaker:

of the things that I see

Speaker:

for many women is that

Speaker:

They've tried so hard

Speaker:

with their diet to manage

Speaker:

how they're feeling and

Speaker:

manage their symptoms

Speaker:

so they feel better.

Speaker:

But it becomes so hyper

Speaker:

focused that it actually

Speaker:

creates a lot of stress

Speaker:

and can exacerbate or

Speaker:

create their symptoms.

Speaker:

So we have the

Speaker:

gut brain axis.

Speaker:

It's the link between

Speaker:

the gut and the brain.

Speaker:

And so, we have our

Speaker:

thoughts and our feelings

Speaker:

can influence our gut.

Speaker:

So you would notice when

Speaker:

you get nervous, you

Speaker:

get a nervous tummy,

Speaker:

um, you get butterflies.

Speaker:

You have that gut feeling.

Speaker:

So that's all about

Speaker:

how your thoughts are

Speaker:

influencing your gut.

Speaker:

And we can do that

Speaker:

the other way around,

Speaker:

where food influences

Speaker:

So, if you're thinking

Speaker:

negatively about food,

Speaker:

or you're hyper focused,

Speaker:

and there's a lot of

Speaker:

stress around food,

Speaker:

okay, it's not a relaxed

Speaker:

eating environment, okay,

Speaker:

then you're creating

Speaker:

a lot of stress in the

Speaker:

system, particularly for

Speaker:

the gut, which is the

Speaker:

Home of food digestion.

Speaker:

And so you have to

Speaker:

imagine that when our

Speaker:

stress response is

Speaker:

activated there, we're

Speaker:

not in the best place

Speaker:

to actually digest food.

Speaker:

So our thoughts are just

Speaker:

as powerful as food.

Speaker:

food really is medicine.

Speaker:

And when you see how

Speaker:

much diet can change your

Speaker:

energy, your mental well

Speaker:

being, um, your weight,

Speaker:

and the way that you feel,

Speaker:

and your confidence, and

Speaker:

it really You know, it's

Speaker:

a no brainer, right?

Speaker:

Food is medicine and

Speaker:

makes a huge impact.

Speaker:

But our thoughts work

Speaker:

on the same level.

Speaker:

Our thoughts are just as

Speaker:

influential to our physical

Speaker:

body and obviously our

Speaker:

mental well being, but to

Speaker:

our physical body as much

Speaker:

as what you're eating.

Speaker:

There was a study done

Speaker:

here in Melbourne, I

Speaker:

believe, and they found

Speaker:

that when low stress

Speaker:

women ate junk food, the

Speaker:

health impact across all

Speaker:

markers was a fraction

Speaker:

of that of anxious women.

Speaker:

So what that means is that,

Speaker:

in a very generalisation,

Speaker:

that if you're very anxious

Speaker:

and stressed, you're

Speaker:

going to have more impact

Speaker:

from junk food, compared

Speaker:

to if you're relaxed.

Speaker:

And that kind of makes

Speaker:

sense, that if you're

Speaker:

more relaxed around

Speaker:

food, your body's going

Speaker:

to be more relaxed,

Speaker:

and therefore digestion

Speaker:

will be easier and it

Speaker:

impacts other systems.

Speaker:

So, that research is

Speaker:

really telling because

Speaker:

it really points to

Speaker:

that what our mental

Speaker:

state is at influences

Speaker:

a particular food.

Speaker:

And two people will have

Speaker:

a different reaction

Speaker:

based on their levels

Speaker:

of stress or based on

Speaker:

their levels of anxiety.

Speaker:

So I really want to

Speaker:

kind of bring this home

Speaker:

by sharing a recent

Speaker:

client's story which I

Speaker:

think is really powerful.

Speaker:

So she's been a client

Speaker:

of mine for a while

Speaker:

but she's had a history

Speaker:

For many, many years of

Speaker:

chronic gut symptoms, which

Speaker:

were quite debilitating,

Speaker:

liver problems, fatty

Speaker:

liver, liver damage, lots

Speaker:

of food intolerances.

Speaker:

Now, working with her,

Speaker:

we did a lot of the

Speaker:

healing work for the

Speaker:

gut and the liver and

Speaker:

different systems, and

Speaker:

that looked like doing

Speaker:

a food sensitivity test

Speaker:

and avoiding those foods.

Speaker:

She did extensive gut

Speaker:

repair, liver support.

Speaker:

We supported her nervous

Speaker:

system as well, because

Speaker:

she was quite a high

Speaker:

stress person as well.

Speaker:

And, she was a

Speaker:

lot better, right?

Speaker:

Her symptoms disappeared

Speaker:

when each time she

Speaker:

went to the doctor.

Speaker:

to the doctor to get

Speaker:

another blood test.

Speaker:

Her pathology was better

Speaker:

and better and better

Speaker:

and better, right?

Speaker:

she had a significant

Speaker:

difference to her pathology

Speaker:

reports and most of the

Speaker:

imbalances had corrected.

Speaker:

About a month after that,

Speaker:

her symptoms had returned

Speaker:

kind of intermittently,

Speaker:

not as much, not as bad

Speaker:

as they were, but they

Speaker:

were, they were slowly

Speaker:

coming back and she was

Speaker:

like, I don't understand.

Speaker:

I'm doing

Speaker:

everything the same.

Speaker:

I'm doing everything

Speaker:

perfectly.

Speaker:

I couldn't be doing

Speaker:

anything more perfect

Speaker:

than what I'm doing.

Speaker:

And as we were chatting,

Speaker:

I could really hear that

Speaker:

there was anxiety around

Speaker:

her food plan, okay?

Speaker:

And I asked her, I

Speaker:

said like, do you

Speaker:

ever deviate off plan?

Speaker:

Like how strict are you?

Speaker:

She's like, oh no.

Speaker:

I am so hyper focused.

Speaker:

I am so strict.

Speaker:

I won't go out with friends

Speaker:

at all, because I won't be

Speaker:

able to eat what I can eat.

Speaker:

When I go to family

Speaker:

dinners, I'll often bring

Speaker:

something that I can eat.

Speaker:

Like, there was so,

Speaker:

so much restriction

Speaker:

to her life based on

Speaker:

this food plan, okay?

Speaker:

And I hadn't realized that

Speaker:

she was being so hyper

Speaker:

vigilant with her food.

Speaker:

You know, we had a chat

Speaker:

and I said, look, this

Speaker:

isn't about food anymore.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

You've done the

Speaker:

healing work.

Speaker:

You've corrected everything

Speaker:

in your pathology.

Speaker:

This is not about

Speaker:

the food anymore.

Speaker:

This is your anxiety or

Speaker:

your hyper vigilance around

Speaker:

the food plant and the food

Speaker:

and deviating off plan.

Speaker:

So as soon as she would.

Speaker:

I'm not sure I've ever

Speaker:

heard of a woman who

Speaker:

would ever have a hint

Speaker:

of something, her gut

Speaker:

symptoms were so severe.

Speaker:

Okay, so she would

Speaker:

almost relapse because

Speaker:

of the fear of relapsing.

Speaker:

And I know that sounds

Speaker:

really strange, but I've

Speaker:

seen it enough in my work

Speaker:

to know that when I hear

Speaker:

a woman speaking about how

Speaker:

she's eating and how her

Speaker:

day goes with food, I can

Speaker:

hear the hypervigilance.

Speaker:

When she's speaking,

Speaker:

and that is having a

Speaker:

direct impact on the gut,

Speaker:

which is leading to more

Speaker:

intolerances, more gut

Speaker:

symptoms, but then just has

Speaker:

this whole systemic effect.

Speaker:

So after we had that chat

Speaker:

and I said to her, look,

Speaker:

you've got to trust the

Speaker:

process, you've done the

Speaker:

healing work, everything's

Speaker:

good there, okay?

Speaker:

Now you really need to

Speaker:

change your relationship

Speaker:

to the food, and you

Speaker:

need to change your

Speaker:

thinking, and you need to

Speaker:

start telling yourself.

Speaker:

It is okay for

Speaker:

me to eat that.

Speaker:

It is safe for

Speaker:

me to eat that.

Speaker:

My body is healed

Speaker:

and I can eat those

Speaker:

foods occasionally.

Speaker:

That is totally fine.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

And we really went into

Speaker:

a deep chat about it.

Speaker:

So she got off that

Speaker:

call and she was really

Speaker:

comfortable and she

Speaker:

was like, yes, I can

Speaker:

see how I'm creating so

Speaker:

much anxiety and hyper

Speaker:

focus and how much that

Speaker:

is really affecting me.

Speaker:

I said to her,

Speaker:

look, just check in

Speaker:

with me in a month.

Speaker:

Let me know where you're

Speaker:

at, how you're feeling.

Speaker:

And she did, she dropped

Speaker:

me an email and she said,

Speaker:

honestly, I have not

Speaker:

had any more symptoms.

Speaker:

I have been introducing

Speaker:

different foods, which

Speaker:

I haven't been able to

Speaker:

eat for a very long time

Speaker:

and I was totally fine.

Speaker:

She goes, I can 100

Speaker:

percent see how much my

Speaker:

mind was influencing the

Speaker:

food that I was eating

Speaker:

in terms of what it was

Speaker:

doing inside her body.

Speaker:

Now, the reason why I

Speaker:

Speaker:

do think it's really

Speaker:

important because a lot of

Speaker:

people, you know, You get

Speaker:

frustrated because you're

Speaker:

doing all the right things

Speaker:

and you're not getting the

Speaker:

results But I want you to

Speaker:

look at and let me know

Speaker:

in the comments below.

Speaker:

Can you relate to this?

Speaker:

Have you seen yourself

Speaker:

become so strict with

Speaker:

what you eat, you know?

Speaker:

Maybe criticized or

Speaker:

judges of so much for

Speaker:

going off plan or maybe

Speaker:

you find You go off plan

Speaker:

for one meal or one food

Speaker:

and some of your

Speaker:

symptoms return.

Speaker:

Like, have you noticed this

Speaker:

level of hypervigilance and

Speaker:

can you see how much it's

Speaker:

influencing your physical

Speaker:

symptoms, your tolerance

Speaker:

of food and, you know,

Speaker:

your physical well being?

Speaker:

Let me know in the

Speaker:

comments below.
