Speaker AHere's today's reading reading from Luke 12:41 48 from the Message Peter said, master, are you telling this story just for us or is it for everybody?
Speaker AThe Master said, let me ask you, who is the dependable manager, full of common sense, that the Master puts in charge of his staff to feed them well and on time?
Speaker AHe is a blessed man if when the Master shows up, he is doing his job.
Speaker ABut if he says to himself, the Master is certainly taking his time, begins beating up on the servants and maids, throws parties for his friends and gets drunk, the Master will walk in when he least expects it, give him the thrashing of his life, and put him back in the kitchen peeling potatoes.
Speaker AThe servant who knows what the Master wants and ignores it or insolently does whatever he pleases, will be thoroughly thrashed.
Speaker ABut if he does a poor job through ignorance, he'll get off with a slap on the hand.
Speaker AGreat gifts mean great responsibilities.
Speaker AGreater gifts, greater responsibilities.
Speaker AUntil next time.
Speaker ARemember, sometimes the most radical act is choosing to stop and listen.
Speaker AWell, my friends, in today's reflection, we are exploring and talking about Jesus's challenging teaching about leadership, privilege and the ethical use of power.
Speaker ALet's get into some points to ponder.
Speaker AThe first is about going beyond individual morality.
Speaker AWhile this passage is often read as a lesson about personal faithfulness, it's actually a radical critique of power structures.
Speaker AJesus is addressing how those with authority treat those under their care.
Speaker AIn our contemporary context, this speaks to corporate leadership, political power, and systematic inequality.
Speaker AThe Master's absence might represent how privilege often operates without accountability.
Speaker AA second point to ponder is about collective responsibility.
Speaker AThe phrase great gifts means great responsibilities isn't about individual talent, but about collective resources and privilege.
Speaker AThose with more, whether it's wealth or education or social capital or institutional power, have greater responsibility to work for justice and equity.
Speaker AThis challenges both prosperity gospel thinking and passive privilege.
Speaker AAnother point is about understanding as an obligation.
Speaker AJesus suggests that knowledge creates responsibility.
Speaker AIn our information age, when we're aware of global injustice, climate crisis and systematic oppression, we can't claim ignorance.
Speaker AThis awareness demands action.
Speaker AHowever, the text also shows compassion for those who do a poor job through ignorance, suggesting that justice work must include education and consciousness raising.
Speaker AHere's your action step.
Speaker AConduct a privilege inventory.
Speaker AThat is, list the areas where you hold some power or some advantage in your life through education or wealth or race or gender citizenship, any number of things.
Speaker AChoose one area of privilege and identity a specific way you can use it to benefit those with less power.
Speaker AMaybe it's using your social connections to create some job opportunities, or leveraging institutional position to change discriminatory policies, or using financial privilege to fund justice work we'll come back and have a prayer.
Speaker AJust a minute.

Speaker AOh God, you are a source of justice and truth and we acknowledge the power we hold, the privilege we didn't earn responsibilities that we often avoid.
Speaker AHelp us be faithful stewards of whatever influence we possess.
Speaker AGuard us from using power for self interest.
Speaker AGuide us in using it for collective liberation.
Speaker AWhen we're tempted to look away or delay, remind us that justice can't wait.
Speaker AIn commitment and courage we pray.
