Speaker A

Can we be honest for a second?

Speaker A

By the end of the year, most of us are not thinking, I can't wait to overhaul my life.

Speaker A

We're thinking, I'm tired and I just want to feel better.

Speaker A

If wellness has started to feel like another thing you're failing at, then this episode is for you.

Speaker A

Today we're talking about a wellness reset.

Speaker A

Not an overhaul.

Speaker A

Not a detox, not a 30 day challenge.

Speaker A

Just small supportive shifts that actually work for women over 50.

Speaker A

Aging with grace and stuff.

Speaker A

Welcome back to Aging with Grace and Style, the podcast helping women 50 and over own their confidence, live well and stay inspired.

Speaker A

All with grace, style and a touch of sass.

Speaker A

I'm Valerie and this is episode two in our year end reset series.

Speaker A

Last week we focused on confidence, reconnecting with ourselves after a long year.

Speaker A

Today, we're moving into wellness because confidence and wellness are deeply connected.

Speaker A

And before we go any further, let me say this clearly.

Speaker A

This is not about fixing your body.

Speaker A

This is about supporting it.

Speaker A

Let's start with the elephant in the room.

Speaker A

Wellness really can feel harder in midlife.

Speaker A

For years, the message was just try harder.

Speaker A

Be more disciplined.

Speaker A

Wake up earlier.

Speaker A

And if we're being honest, that approach probably worked in your 20s or your 30s.

Speaker A

But if you've tried to do the same things at 50, 55 or 60 and found yourself thinking, why does this feel so much harder now?

Speaker A

You're not imagining it.

Speaker A

Your body has changed.

Speaker A

Hormone shift, muscle mass changes.

Speaker A

Joints.

Speaker A

Talk back a little louder.

Speaker A

Recovery after a late night or a tough workout doesn't look the same anymore.

Speaker A

Let me give you a real life example.

Speaker A

So the other week I went to a concert with my cousin.

Speaker A

We were pretty much gone all day.

Speaker A

Brunch, a little shopping, dinner, then the concert.

Speaker A

It was a good day.

Speaker A

We didn't get home until, I don't know, about one in the morning.

Speaker A

We talked for a while because that's what you do.

Speaker A

So it was closer to, say, two by the time I actually went to bed.

Speaker A

I got up around 8 the next morning for church.

Speaker A

And when I tell you my body felt like I had been in a fight and lost, I was done, completely drained.

Speaker A

And what really stood out to me was this.

Speaker A

That used to be normal for me.

Speaker A

I could do a late night, get up early and keep it moving.

Speaker A

This time my body was like, ma', am, absolutely not.

Speaker A

And that's what I mean when I say your body is giving you new information.

Speaker A

You might notice your sleep is lighter or your energy feels more fragile.

Speaker A

Stress hits your body differently, especially when Menopause, work, pressure, caregiving or new health concerns are in the mix.

Speaker A

And yet many of us are still trying to run the same old wellness playbook.

Speaker A

The strict diet you did at 35, the intense workout plan you followed before kids or before life got full.

Speaker A

I'll just push through mindset you used when sleep felt optional.

Speaker A

I remember having a moment where I thought, why am I so tired after a workout?

Speaker A

That used to energize me.

Speaker A

And instead of listening, I told myself to push harder.

Speaker A

That didn't make me healthier.

Speaker A

It made me frustrated.

Speaker A

That was my wake up call.

Speaker A

Those old rules stopped working.

Speaker A

Not because you failed, but because your season has changed.

Speaker A

And I really want you to hear this next part.

Speaker A

There's nothing wrong with you.

Speaker A

Say it out loud if you can.

Speaker A

Or at least say it in your head.

Speaker A

Nothing is wrong with me.

Speaker A

My body is giving me new information at this stage of life.

Speaker A

Hustle, wellness.

Speaker A

It just doesn't fit.

Speaker A

You're not a 25 year old trying to squeeze into a bridesmaid's dress next month.

Speaker A

You're a grown woman with responsibilities, wisdom, and a body that deserves respect, not punishment.

Speaker A

So instead of asking, why can't I do what I used to do?

Speaker A

Try asking a different question.

Speaker A

What kind of wellness actually supports the woman I am now?

Speaker A

Just sit with that.

Speaker A

Because the answer to that question is where your wellness reset truly begins.

Speaker A

Now let's talk about one of the biggest traps when it comes to wellness.

Speaker A

All or nothing thinking.

Speaker A

You probably recognize this pattern.

Speaker A

You start strong on Monday.

Speaker A

New workout plan, new diet, all the water, all the steps.

Speaker A

By Thursday, you're exhausted.

Speaker A

By the weekend, you are off the wagon.

Speaker A

And by Sunday night, you're telling yourself, I'll just start fresh next month.

Speaker A

Does that sound familiar?

Speaker A

Here's the truth.

Speaker A

It's not that you're lazy.

Speaker A

It's not that you're uncommitted.

Speaker A

It's not that you lack discipline.

Speaker A

It's that the plan was built on intensity, not reality.

Speaker A

And that cycle doesn't just exhaust your body, it chips away at your confidence.

Speaker A

Every restart starts to feel like proof that you can't stick with anything.

Speaker A

When the truth is you've been trying to stick with something that was never designed for this season of your life.

Speaker A

And on top of that, you might be comparing yourself to a younger version of you.

Speaker A

I used to go to the gym five days a week.

Speaker A

I used to drop weight faster.

Speaker A

I used to stay up late and still function the next day.

Speaker A

But you're not that version of you anymore.

Speaker A

And I surely am not that version of me.

Speaker A

And that is not a downgrade.

Speaker A

It simply means your body has different needs.

Speaker A

Now then, there's this sneaky belief that shows up in midlife, the idea that rest equals failure.

Speaker A

If you skip a workout to sleep, you feel guilty.

Speaker A

If you take a day off because your knees hurt, you feel behind.

Speaker A

If you choose a gentle walk instead of a boot camp class, then you tell yourself it doesn't count.

Speaker A

Now let me say this clearly.

Speaker A

Rest is not quitting.

Speaker A

Rest is information.

Speaker A

And here's the shift that matters most.

Speaker A

Midlife wellness isn't about proving anything.

Speaker A

It's about protecting your energy.

Speaker A

So here's the reframe that I want you to carry with you.

Speaker A

Consistency beats intensity every time at this stage of life.

Speaker A

10 minutes of walking most days will take you further than one extreme workout that you can't even sustain.

Speaker A

Drinking water consistently will serve you more than one week of perfect eating followed by burnout.

Speaker A

Going to bed 30 minutes earlier most nights is more powerful than a fancy wellness retreat that you only do.

Speaker A

What what I'm saying is small, repeatable acts of care are not, quote unquote, less than they are.

Speaker A

Let's call it grown woman wellness.

Speaker A

So if you've been stuck in that cycle of starting hard, burning out, and feeling like you're the problem, then take a breath.

Speaker A

You're not the problem.

Speaker A

The all or nothing approach is the problem.

Speaker A

And once we let that go, then the real question becomes, what does supportive wellness actually look like at this stage of life?

Speaker A

And that's where we're headed next.

Speaker A

So let's talk about what a wellness reset can actually look like at 50 and beyond is not a boot camp.

Speaker A

It's not a makeover.

Speaker A

It's a reset.

Speaker A

And a reset at this stage of life is small, doable, and supportive.

Speaker A

Think of it like gently turning dials, not flipping your entire life upside down.

Speaker A

Here are some of those dials that you might consider adjusting sleep can you give yourself a consistent bedtime window most nights of the week?

Speaker A

Maybe that means turning off the TV or stopping the scroll 20 to 30 minutes earlier.

Speaker A

Better sleep supports your mood, your hormones, your cravings, believe it or not, and your energy.

Speaker A

And let me say this clearly, it's not selfish.

Speaker A

It's foundational.

Speaker A

And once sleep is even a little more supported, then the next thing many of us start to notice is how our body feels during the day.

Speaker A

Next is hydration.

Speaker A

Most of us actually walk around mildly dehydrated and then wonder why we feel foggy, achy or snacky Start simple.

Speaker A

Keep a favorite water bottle nearby.

Speaker A

There's always a water bottle near me.

Speaker A

And aim to refill it a couple of times a day.

Speaker A

No perfection is required, just more awareness.

Speaker A

And when your body is even slightly more hydrated, movement often starts to feel a little different.

Speaker A

Movement that feels good.

Speaker A

This is not about punishing your body into a smaller size.

Speaker A

It's about asking a different question.

Speaker A

How does my body like to move right now?

Speaker A

Maybe that's walking, maybe it's stretching.

Speaker A

Maybe it's dancing in your kitchen.

Speaker A

Maybe it's water aerobics or a gentle strength work.

Speaker A

The best movement is the one that you'll actually do and to do it without dreading it.

Speaker A

Movement and nourishment really work together.

Speaker A

Not in a rigid way, but in a supportive one.

Speaker A

So let's talk about protein and nourishment.

Speaker A

You don't need a rigid diet to support your body.

Speaker A

Well, instead of restricting, think about adding.

Speaker A

Can you add a bit more protein so that you feel satisfied and support your muscles?

Speaker A

I think many of us suffer from not getting in enough protein.

Speaker A

I know that's something that I have to really focus and concentrate on.

Speaker A

Can you sprinkle in more colorful foods that give you energy?

Speaker A

No food shaming here, just more kindness and intention.

Speaker A

Now this next one might be the hardest dial for many of us to turn.

Speaker A

And that rests without guilt.

Speaker A

Try scheduling pockets of rest the same way that you schedule appointments.

Speaker A

A 10 minute sit on the patio, a quiet cup of tea or coffee, a short nap.

Speaker A

Rest is not what you earn after doing enough.

Speaker A

It's what allows you to keep going.

Speaker A

And finally, this is where all of these small shifts start to come together.

Speaker A

And that stress management.

Speaker A

Your nervous system has been through a lot.

Speaker A

Simple stress soothers matter.

Speaker A

Deep breathing, a short walk outside, journaling, a favorite playlist, prayer, meditation, whatever helps you feel grounded.

Speaker A

Routines that support energy.

Speaker A

Ask yourself this simple what helps future me?

Speaker A

Maybe that looks like laying out your clothes the night before, or prepping a breakfast, or keeping your vitamins where you'll actually see them in order to take them, creating a loose morning rhythm that sets the tone for the day.

Speaker A

And here's the part that I really want you to hear.

Speaker A

You do not need to overhaul all of this at once.

Speaker A

In fact, please don't choose one or two areas to gently reset over the next few weeks.

Speaker A

Because your wellness reset is not about becoming a different person.

Speaker A

It's about supporting the woman that you already are with the life that you actually live.

Speaker A

In the last episode we talked about reconnecting with yourself and listening to your inner voice.

Speaker A

And if you haven't listened to that one yet, I really encourage you to go back and start there as it sets the foundation for everything that we're talking about today.

Speaker A

For a lot of women, the body has started to feel like the enemy.

Speaker A

The weight that won't move, the hot flashes, the aches and pains, the changes you see when you look in the mirror.

Speaker A

But what if your body isn't the enemy?

Speaker A

What if it's just the messenger?

Speaker A

Your body speaks in signals, not shame.

Speaker A

Fatigue is saying I'm tired, not lazy.

Speaker A

Pain is saying something needs attention.

Speaker A

Cravings might be saying I'm under fueled or overwhelmed.

Speaker A

Brain fog might be saying I I need rest, nourishment or less overload.

Speaker A

When you start treating your body as information instead of a problem to fix, everything seems to begin to shift.

Speaker A

So here's a simple practice I want you to try each day.

Speaker A

Ask yourself, what is my body telling me today?

Speaker A

Not this month, not this year.

Speaker A

To just today.

Speaker A

Because maybe today's capacity is a full workout, and maybe today's capacity is a gentle stretch or an earlier bedtime.

Speaker A

Both of those count.

Speaker A

Honoring today's capacity is, let's call it grown woman wisdom.

Speaker A

You're not inconsistent because some days look different from others.

Speaker A

You're responsive, you're paying attention.

Speaker A

And that right there, now that's wellness.

Speaker A

So today we looked at what a wellness reset really looks like at this stage of life.

Speaker A

We talked about why wellness can feel harder now.

Speaker A

Not because something is wrong with you, but because your body and your life have changed.

Speaker A

We called out the all or nothing approach for what it is.

Speaker A

And we reminded ourselves that consistency and kindness matter more than intensity.

Speaker A

We talked about small, doable ways to support yourself.

Speaker A

Things like sleep, hydration, movement that feels good, nourishment, rest, stress, care, and simple routines that actually fit your real life.

Speaker A

And we reminded ourselves of this.

Speaker A

Your body is not the enemy.

Speaker A

It's giving you information.

Speaker A

Honoring today's capacity isn't weakness, it's wisdom.

Speaker A

Here's your homework for this week.

Speaker A

You know there's always homework.

Speaker A

Choose one wellness dial that we talked about earlier to turn up just a notch.

Speaker A

Maybe it's sleep, maybe water or movement that feels good.

Speaker A

And once a day, ask your body, what are you trying to tell me today?

Speaker A

Then honor it in one small way.

Speaker A

You don't need to become a different woman to be well.

Speaker A

You just need to start treating this version of you like she deserves care.

Speaker A

If this episode helped you feel a little lighter or a little more seen.

Speaker A

Share it with a friend who might need a wellness reset too.

Speaker A

And next time we're going to keep building on this and talk about a mindset reset.

Speaker A

How the way we talk to ourselves, especially at this stage of life, can either support our wellness or quietly work against it.

Speaker A

Until then, be gentle with yourself.

Speaker A

Your wellness reset doesn't have to be loud or perfect, it just needs to be honest.

Speaker A

And as always, keep aging with grace, style and a touch of sass.
