Speaker CLast time we did an interview with you, Bridget, you had accidentally told us about this Gift or I don't know what you guys call it.

Speaker AMaybe.
Speaker CWhat is it actually called, though?

Speaker CBecause you have it, don't you?

Speaker CI don't want to call it condition because I don't want to have any kind of, like, negative connotation.
Speaker CBut some, when I talk to people about it, they tend to kind of this, like, negative way about it.
Speaker CBut it, to me, it's exciting and it's like a gift.
Speaker ALike a phenomenon.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker EI feel like it depends who you're talking to.
Speaker COkay.
Speaker EI went to school with a guy.
Speaker EIf he heard the color yellow, he literally had a panic attack and left the classroom.
Speaker CIf someone said yellow?
Speaker ENo.
Speaker EHeard the color yellow.
Speaker AExcuse me.
Speaker BWait.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker EOkay, so let's give a little preface.
Speaker ESynesthesia, from what I understand, is any kind of cross between any of your senses.
Speaker ESo some people can taste numbers, right?
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker EOr who knows?
Speaker EThere's a lot of different variations.
Speaker EThis guy, perfect pitch, if he heard a specific frequency that in his head registered to the color yellow, he would literally scream and run out the room.
Speaker ESo I feel like to him it's a condition.
Speaker CYeah, I guess so.
Speaker EGet him here.
Speaker AWhere is he?
Speaker EYeah, yeah, I know.
Speaker EAnd I.
Speaker EI don't know.
Speaker EI think it's a gift.
Speaker CI think so, too.
Speaker CJust when I hear you guys talk about it or other people talk about, I'm just like, wow, it sounds amazing.
Speaker CBut then you guys sometimes sound like you're tormented by it, so it's kind of confusing to me.
Speaker EI guess it depends on the situation, right?
Speaker CFor sure.
Speaker ATrue.
Speaker EYeah.
Speaker EYou're synes.
Speaker ELike, what's your kind of synesthesia?
Speaker BIt's nothing bad.
Speaker BIt's my.
Speaker BActually.
Speaker BWell, it's a little.
Speaker BI would say I'm closer to a condition.
Speaker BLike, my sense of smell doesn't really work if it's loud sounds distract me too much to also smell.
Speaker CSo if someone farted in a rock concert, you wouldn't smell?
Speaker BProbably more so now as an adult, but as a child, I just stand there with my mouth open.
Speaker BWow.
Speaker ASomebody make some noise.
Speaker ALet's test this out.
Speaker CThat's funny.
Speaker CI guess for the three of you, my first question would be, when did each of you realize that you had this ability?
Speaker CI guess we'll start with you, Bridget.
Speaker CLadies first.
Speaker DYeah.
Speaker DI was in high school and I went to an arts high school, so it was super.
Speaker DYou Know, let's see.
Speaker DIt was super commonplace for people to jam and have, like, little rehearsals, put little ensembles together.
Speaker DSo one day I really, really wanted to cover the song Mr.
Speaker DBlue Sky.
Speaker DJust so happy.
Speaker DAnd I, you know, had singers, a whole band at my disposal.
Speaker DBecause that's just what you do.
Speaker DYou just get together.
Speaker DSo I, you know, Facebook messaged a bunch of people.
Speaker DI'm like, hey, here's a song I want to do for, like, the end of your recital.
Speaker DYeah, let's get together, everyone, like, pick out their part.
Speaker DLet's go.
Speaker DAnd then we came to the first rehearsal and I was like, okay, so everyone, 1, 2, 3.
Speaker DEveryone's like, well, you haven't given us the sheet music yet.
Speaker DI'm like, well, I told you to just pick out your part.
Speaker DIt's really easy, you know, like horns, your orange.
Speaker DLike you're way up there.
Speaker DAnd then, like, you know, like piano.
Speaker DYou're like, you're the purple.
Speaker DYou know, why can't you just see your parts in the music?
Speaker DMemorize it or write it down and then come to rehearsal prepared?
Speaker CRight.
Speaker CSo I'm looking at you like, what are you talking about?
Speaker DAnd I just didn't understand why people couldn't just pick out their parts in the music that was just right in front of their face and do it.
Speaker CSo what did you do after, like, when you realized in that moment that no one else was seeing or breaking it down the way you were?
Speaker DYeah.
Speaker CDid you, like, how did that make you feel?
Speaker CWere you confused or were you just like, I gotta talk to someone about this?
Speaker CCause no one's seeing their parts.
Speaker DI mean, I just thought, like, ah, you know, people are lazy.
Speaker DThey're making, you know, excuses.
Speaker DThey have some other stuff going on.
Speaker DI think I ended up, like, getting the sheet music from somewhere.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker DBut by that time, it was like, you know, too late to do the audition for stuff.
Speaker DSo I was like, oh, you know, whatever, next time.
Speaker DAnd I just kind of forgot about it.
Speaker CRight.
Speaker CBecause when did it.
Speaker COr when did you.
Speaker CWhen were you able to actually correlate it to synesthesia?
Speaker DThat was like.
Speaker DThat was university, I'd say, wow.
Speaker DIt was a music and film class.
Speaker DSo there were a lot of visual aspects along with the music being talked about.
Speaker DAnd then they talked about synesthesia.
Speaker DLike, oh, some film directors have synesthesia.
Speaker DSo they do, you know, music in a different way.
Speaker DI was like, oh, oh, cool.
Speaker DWhat's that?
Speaker DOh, let's learn about a bit more about this.
Speaker DYeah.
Speaker DAnd then, yeah, I just researched it on my Own and yeah, came to the conclusion that's the thing, I might have.
Speaker CSo you never spoke to like an actual doctor about it or went to go get like tested?
Speaker CI don't even know if you'd go get tested.
Speaker CDoes anyone get tested for citizenship?
Speaker CAssume you have it and just carry on with life.
Speaker BThe test would be like an MRI test and things of that sort.
Speaker BIf it's a real problem for you and like, you know, if certain sounds taste like puke or whatever, then you need to go get that checked out.
Speaker DYeah, I did ask about it because my ex boyfriend's dad is a kind of like psychology professor.
Speaker DHe's his doctorate in psychology.
Speaker DSo I'm like, hey, do you know a place that does like, you know, brain scans for certain things?
Speaker DAnd he, you know, sent me to one place and they're like, yeah, it's gonna be like a three year wait since you don't really have a condition, you're just interested and it's gonna be like 500 bucks and it's gonna be yeah, so I'm good.
Speaker DI don't want to know that bad.
Speaker CDamn.
Speaker CAnd what about you, Blake?
Speaker EYeah, I.
Speaker EI mean I went to an art high school too.
Speaker EI feel like that's where I was hinted about it.
Speaker EI was in a jazz theory class and I was like literally acing all of the listening tests.
Speaker ESo it's like play a chord.
Speaker EWhat the chord is, right?
Speaker EIs it a major?
Speaker ESeven, whatever.
Speaker EAnd they're like, how do you hear this?
Speaker EI'm like, well, minor 7 flat 5.
Speaker EThat's like purple and blue, man.
Speaker ELike, what's the problem?
Speaker EAnd my teacher just kind of looks at me, he's like, are you thin?
Speaker EAesthetic synesthetic?
Speaker EI can't even say the word.
Speaker EI'm just like, I don't know what the bloody F is that, right?
Speaker EAnd like since then I've been like, yeah, I'm synesthetic.
Speaker EBut then I hear like other people talk about it and I really don't think I'm like full blown.
Speaker ELike for me it's just intervals.
Speaker CRight?
Speaker ERight.
Speaker ESo like major thirds, minor thirds have different color qualities to them and then lower, higher pitch and like different timbre things.
Speaker ESo it's kind of like, I don't know, I feel like I had a cheat sheet in my head.
Speaker EMore of like, well, I hear this.
Speaker ESo it's this.
Speaker EIt's not like a full on C colors through my eyes when I hear sound.
Speaker EIt's kind of like drops of like food coloring and water in my brain.
Speaker BAnd we don't all feel or hear the same thing.
Speaker BLike, the.
Speaker BI remember one of the first albums I was making as a musician, I was singing a little flat because drummers are not good singers.
Speaker BAnd the producer, Peter Spencer goes, you know, just when you're thinking of what you're singing towards, like, let's say you're singing towards an orange, and you're just red.
Speaker BLike, make it a little more or.
Speaker BAnd I'm like, what are you talking about?
Speaker BAnd I have synesthesia.
Speaker BI'm like, that doesn't work that way.
Speaker BWhat do you mean?
Speaker BAnd he's like, yeah, just imagine it.
Speaker BLike, I don't think he understood that he had it either.
Speaker DHe wanted you to go from my understanding of red to orange.
Speaker DHe wanted you to go sharper.
Speaker BYeah, I mean, I was flat.
Speaker BI was like, just say, go sharp.
Speaker BAnd he's like, yeah, but that's not as helpful.
Speaker BI'm like, I'm pretty sure it's more.
Speaker BYeah, we bump into one another all the time and don't even realize it.
Speaker EYeah.
Speaker EYeah, there you go.
Speaker DLike, I didn't even realize that so many of my friends and colleagues had it until I put out the Facebook post, like, hey, everyone, looking for some musicians to talk about this anesthesia.
Speaker DAnd then, like, five people I've worked with for, like, three years now were like, you, too?
Speaker DOh, man, that's crazy.
Speaker DBecause, like, you just never talk about it unless you're inebriated in some way, and you're just like, whoa, man.
Speaker CDo you, like, there seems to be, like, not with mat so much, but with you, too.
Speaker CAlmost like, a little bit of, like, shame that you have it.
Speaker CLike, you're like, do you.
Speaker CWhy wouldn't you tell more people about this amazing gift?
Speaker CAnd when you meet somebody or when you're around other artistic people, like you, for example, did you talk to your teacher more about it, or did you kind of just like, oh, I guess I haven't, and just carry on?
Speaker EI mean, she only had so many answers, I guess, right?
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker EI feel like, like, when I went to university, there were a few people with synesthesia.
Speaker EBut after I talked to them, I was like, do I even have it right?
Speaker EIt's like I'm talking about a guy that has panic attacks about hearing the color yellow.
Speaker EAnd I'm like, I don't have that.
Speaker ELike, maybe I'm just thinking in a way.
Speaker ELike, I'm just using it as a mode of thinking.
Speaker EBut then, I don't know, reflecting on it.
Speaker EI've done some Research.
Speaker EIt's not a condition for me.
Speaker ERight.
Speaker EBut it's kind of nice.
Speaker ELike, now I'm obsessed with diminished seven chords, right?
Speaker EI'm obsessed.
Speaker EI'm obsessed.
Speaker ESeven, diminished seven chords.
Speaker EYou can do minor six patterns and all of this.
Speaker EAnd basically it's like minor third, minor third, minor third, minor 3rd.
Speaker ESo it's this, like, monochromatic blue.
Speaker CRight.
Speaker EAnd it's just so much better than, like, a dominant seven chord.
Speaker EAnd I don't know why it is, but it's just now I'm kind of, like, using these colors in my head to develop, practicing, and, like, different improv kind of techniques.
Speaker EI'm like.
Speaker EI want to improvise in, like, more of a red, which is more usually major.
Speaker ERight.
Speaker EAnd it's like, I want to be more blue, and it's usually like minors.
Speaker BWhat's interesting is that it's as if everybody strives to, like.
Speaker BIf you're trying to describe a sound to someone, you would use a visual description.
Speaker EYeah, Right.
Speaker BYou'd be like.
Speaker BOr.
Speaker BOr a temperature.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BIt's warmer, it's colder, it's shimmers.
Speaker BIt's like.
Speaker BThere's no other way to describe it.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker BAnd some brains just go there.
Speaker CThat's fascinating.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker DYeah.
Speaker AIt would be really cool if you can give us kind of a breakdown of how you see and hear these chord types.
Speaker AI wish you had an instrument to show us.
Speaker EI mean, we were talking about this a little earlier before we got all set up.
Speaker ELike, we both play viola and which, for those that don't know it's a bigger violin.
Speaker EI'm sure there's going to be some person that's like, what is that?
Speaker ESo anyways, like, the tuning is like C, G, D, A.
Speaker EAnd I was talking about, like, there's this one box, Suite number five, where you have the option to tune one of the strings down to a G.
Speaker ESo you get like, G, sorry, C, G, D, C.
Speaker EWhat ends up happening.
Speaker EOr, sorry, C, G, D, G.
Speaker EAnd what happens is everything rings and it's in C minor.
Speaker EAnd it is like, the most powerful color explosion.
Speaker EI played it for two years in university.
Speaker ELike, I was obsessed with playing as.
Speaker EAnd for me, it's just like all of these scalar motions kind of to these big chords that are in the suite.
Speaker ELike, there's a lot of minor chords, there's a lot of diminished.
Speaker EThere's a lot of, like, extensions and, like, all these weird tonal centers that it goes from, like, dark burgundy reds to blues to purples, and then it ends on, like, a major BII 7 chord and goes back to the ends in C major instead of C minor.
Speaker EAnd you're just like, explosion, explosion.
Speaker EIt's.
Speaker EIt's.
Speaker EI'm ranting a little bit, but it's kind of like, oh, it's awesome.
Speaker EThe lower the pitch, kind of like, the deeper the color.
Speaker EThe higher the pitch, kind of the lighter in color.
Speaker ESo, like, if I'm hearing blue and it's in an upper range, it's kind of like a baby blue, opposed to, like, a dark.
Speaker ELike, navy blue.
Speaker EIf it was like a.
Speaker ELike, a minor third in the bottom of a piano, that's like, dark, dark, dark blue.
Speaker ERight.
Speaker EFifths are like, more.
Speaker EFifths and fourths are kind of laser tones, kind of like, they just fit really well, like a perfect fifth.
Speaker EAnd it's kind of like a really dark, solid color because it's not really on its own pitch.
Speaker EIt's when you add, like, the majors and the minors for me, that it changes.
Speaker ELike, more red, more blue, more yellow, that kind of thing.
Speaker EI don't know.
Speaker EIt's kind of all over the place.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker EIt's hard for me to put it into exact words.
Speaker BIf you guys want a visualization, I don't know if this is a bit too old school, but remember when you would plug, like, a VCR or DVD player with three cables?
Speaker BIt'd be.
Speaker BYeah, RCA cables.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BWhite and yellow.
Speaker BImagine if you were to take the audio cable and plug it into the video input, and it connects.
Speaker BSame cable, right?
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BIt would give you either static or it depends on what the sound is, but you would get.
Speaker BYou would take that signal and just route it somewhere else.
Speaker EYeah.
Speaker BWhere it gets interpreted as a visual.
Speaker BSo it's kind of like that.
Speaker BAll the different senses are interconnected in the brain.
Speaker CThis might sound stupid, but where are the visuals coming from?
Speaker CIs it coming from the instrument, or are you seeing it just, like, in the.
Speaker DIt's kind of like mind's eye.
Speaker EYeah, that's exactly what I was gonna say.
Speaker DLike, if I say imagine a pink elephant, like, you're not seeing it, but you can clearly, like, put those two concepts together and be like, oh, wicked cool.
Speaker CIt's right there, actually.
Speaker EYeah.
Speaker ABut as you were describing it, Blake, it was like you were actually seeing it.
Speaker EYeah.
Speaker AIt felt like your eyes were closed.
Speaker EYeah.
Speaker EWell, like I was saying earlier, it's, like drips of, like, food coloring and water.
Speaker ELike, it's in.
Speaker EIt's.
Speaker EIt's in the mind's eye.
Speaker ELike this little Third eye opening, awakening, all that nonsense.
Speaker ERight.
Speaker DI think it's like as immediate.
Speaker DIf I said, okay, what color at a stoplight is go in, you'd be like, oh, green, mauve.
Speaker DOh, yeah.
Speaker BI think you need to get your eyes checked.
Speaker EI, I, I've kind of come to realize though, like, there's a bit of a delay.
Speaker ELike it's kind of like a, When I've played a piece of music over and over again, then I kind of know where the colors are versus like a first time listen where it's kind of like, like latency when you're recording.
Speaker BIt'S almost like you're, the visual cortex has to render.
Speaker EYeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker EBut it doesn't mean that, like, I don't know, it's not like I, it's not like I turn it on or off, but sometimes I just kind of ignore it.
Speaker ELike I can just listen to music and do stuff.
Speaker ELike it's not like it's always there.
Speaker AYeah, okay.
Speaker EIt's just kind of like if I want to focus on it and I want to work on stuff, then I can really kind of hone into it.
Speaker EYou know what I mean?
Speaker EI don't know.
Speaker ELike, you guys play music, right?
Speaker EYeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker ESo like, if you ever like thought of what you're about to play on your instrument instead of just playing the notes, like you have that pre thought of like what you're about to play.
Speaker CYeah, yeah.
Speaker ERight.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker EAnd you play better because of that.
Speaker EIt's kind of like that, right?
Speaker ELike, if I'm just listening to it, it's like, yeah, I'm still playing, but it's not as confident almost.
Speaker ESo it's just kind of like I'm thinking behind instead of ahead.
Speaker ERight.
Speaker EIt's one of those kind of things.
Speaker EIt takes a while for it to like kind of sync up a little bit.
Speaker ADo you forget or do you always remember the colors of the music that you've played?
Speaker EIt changes a little bit.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker EMore in like, I guess, vividness, I don't want to say.
Speaker EBut like minor thirds and major thirds are pretty much always like blues and purples to like reds and yellows.
Speaker EPretty much always.
Speaker EAnd then when you get like chords as like major third, minor third, then you get the cross colors, right.
Speaker EYou get the greens and the oranges and stuff.
Speaker BIt's probably like if you eat a meal a bunch of times, eventually kind of the flavor profile changes for you just from experiencing it over and over.
Speaker EYeah.
Speaker EYou hate meatloaf as a kid and then you Start to like meatloaf.
Speaker BYeah, got it.
Speaker CDoes it change based on, say, if you smoked weed or did mushrooms or got drunk, would the synesthesia kick in or.
Speaker CThat doesn't really matter.
Speaker CIt has no effect.
Speaker CLike, would it be crazier if you were high in trying to play an instrument?
Speaker AThat's a good question, because I did read that some people do feel an increased sense when they're drunk or stressed, tired.
Speaker DI've only noticed, like, when I'm drunk, it's easier just for, like, everything to wash over me because I'm not really thinking.
Speaker DThinking about it.
Speaker ERight.
Speaker DYou know, I'm not really like, oh, what.
Speaker DWhat's that?
Speaker DIt's just more like it just hits you and you can't really stop it.
Speaker DSo.

Speaker EI mean, other than the fact that it has a tone, it's like a color tone to it.

Speaker ELike, I can remember the sound of my dead grandfather's voice when he passed away when I was 10.
Speaker EI'm 25 now, and I can still hear it in my head because it's just like there's some.
Speaker EIt's kind of like a fingerprint.
Speaker EYou're always gonna more or less sound like your voice.
Speaker ESo I can kind of remember that more than, like, your face or even your name.
Speaker EFor some reason, I can remember the tone of your voice above everything else.

Speaker EHow good is everyone at remembering music?
Speaker ELike, can you memorize stuff?
Speaker ELike, I did that for fun.
Speaker EI'd memorize, like, 10 pages of something just for the shits and giggles of it.

Speaker ESo I feel like it's not even a synesthetics thing.
Speaker EIt's just, like, I like memorizing sound, if that makes sense.
Speaker AMakes sense.
Speaker EYeah.
Speaker EOr, like, when you're doing audio recording, can you hear the loop that you're playing back when you're editing something with it not playing?
Speaker BI think that applies to everyone.
Speaker BBut, no, I have Pro tools dreams.
Speaker BLike, if you're editing for too long.
Speaker EYeah.
Speaker BAnd you hear the loop, like, sometimes the Reiki has to leave.
Speaker BYeah, of course.
Speaker BIt just gets stuck in your head.

Speaker EBut, like, I know who's talking to me if I don't see their face.

Speaker ENot everyone has that.
Speaker ESome people need the visual.
Speaker BOh, yeah, sure.

Speaker ELike, I can have a conversation with someone in my head and, like, mimic their voice.
Speaker EIn my head, I couldn't imitate it, but I could hear it in my head.

Speaker ENo, I think it's a separate thing.

Speaker EIt kind of ties in because people have always asked me that about synesthesia, and I'm like, well, no, not really.

Speaker EYou're not talking in intervals.

Speaker AIf you're Trinidadian, you might be.

Speaker DYou know what different accents have.
Speaker EDifferent languages are so interesting.

Speaker ELike, I listen to, like, a lot of Caribbean, like, patois.
Speaker EFascinating.
Speaker ELike, not as a white guy saying this, but just because it's a really rhythmic language.

Speaker EIt's really cool.
Speaker EBut the same way, like, Mandarin and Cantonese.
Speaker ELike, it's a beautiful melody because they have so many inflections, and it's.
Speaker EYou can say, like, which I'm not going to translate.

Speaker EIt's amazing because it almost sounds especially Tamil.
Speaker EIt's like almost muted.
Speaker EIt's like there's like a trumpet mute on it.

Speaker EThere's like a huge, like, high pass filter on it.
Speaker EAnd it's just like bassy.
Speaker EAnd it's just so buttery.

Speaker BIt's just describing, see, conversing about sound.
Speaker BYou end up inevitably switching to other examples.

Speaker BIt's almost like sound does more in all of our heads than we can just describe by saying the note well.

Speaker EYou can replay.
Speaker EI mean, you can replay audio.

Speaker EBut video is just a collection of pictures.

Speaker BYou can freeze one and look at it.

Speaker BIt's only available for a transitory period.

Speaker EAnd it's gone forever.
Speaker DLike, when I'm getting used to different accents, I will sometimes just listen to the different kind of like, roller coaster of cadences in the voice and then completely not understand what they said.
Speaker DLike, when I was living in England for six months, I got used to, like, the Scottish accent really fast.
Speaker DAnd at first I was just listening to the different, you know, ways the voice went up and down.
Speaker DAnd then after that, I kind of internalized that, you know, recognized the quote unquote pattern of that.
Speaker DAnd then it was a lot easier for me to just, you know, put that aside and focus on what they were saying.
Speaker DAnd I found I was able to get kind of harder to understand accents.
Speaker DI was able to understand them easier than a few my other kind of like, American Canadian school colleagues.
Speaker DYeah, especially.
Speaker DEspecially, like, Northern Scottish.
Speaker BWell, the thing about Scottish is first you have to stop laughing, and then once you get over that, you can start listening.
Speaker DAnd like, same with, like, Jamaican and Trinidadian.
Speaker DYou know, not dialects, but accents.
Speaker DLike my.
Speaker DThe first time I Met my boyfriend's family.
Speaker DThere were like, you know, 30 aunties, uncles, cousins, and it was just like, whoa, this is.
Speaker DThis is amazing.
Speaker DOkay, cool.
Speaker DAnd people would introduce me to the, you know them, like, oh, hey, what's up?
Speaker DI'm Dave or whatever, but in the accent, I'm not gonna even try to do it.
Speaker DAnd then I just couldn't remember their name afterwards.
Speaker DNot because I'm crappy at that, but I was just distracted.
Speaker DI was just distracted hearing the different ways the voice goes up and down and.
Speaker DOh, man.
Speaker DSame with like, like deep South American, like Texas.
Speaker DThat's another whole style.
Speaker EBut it's popularity.
Speaker DNot really of that, but it's just like.
Speaker DYeah.
Speaker DI don't know.
Speaker DWe're the.

Speaker DHumans make all sorts of different sounds.
