Welcome to the Nursepreneur Academy podcast where nurses like you discover how to break free from the bedside and build a flexible, profitable business using the skills, knowledge and experiences you already have. I'm your host Liam Caswell, an RN turned full time six figure nursepreneur. In 2021, Everything changed for me in my career.

I left my senior nursing role to build an online nurse led personal brand. One that gives me the freedom to work from anywhere, leverage the skills the hospital paid me to learn, and create both the income and impact I always knew I was capable of. Now it's your turn. I'm here to show you the possibilities beyond bedside and help you transition into a nurse led business that fits your needs and likes.

Whether you dream of working from home, earning what you're truly worth, or making an impact on your own terms, I'm gonna guide you every step of the way. Together, my friend, we'll make traditional nursing as you know it, optional. Now, let's get down to it and let's build your profitable business.

What if I told you the skills you use every single day as a nurse could make you wildly successful, and yes, maybe even rich slash wealthy as a nurse preneur. In today's episode, I'm gonna talk to you about the transferable nursing skills that could make you rich as a nurse preneur, and why the skills that you already have are pure gold, a magic in the business world, and that it's time for you to start thinking about how you could use them.

In this digital era where you get to make money online and work from home. What is this world that we're living in? So let's first and foremost start off here. Because I mean, if you're anything like me, when I started my nurse coaching business and I was thinking about being a nurse, nursepreneur, I never thought about being rich.

And maybe that's not your goal. But what I mean by rich and wealthy is freedom. Okay, is the ability to choose and that's what I'm all about here. Whilst I have big audacious goals, I have big income goals, big impact goals, I'm all about building a freedom based business that allows you to live the life you want on your terms.

We've all been confined by the system. We've all been, at the, the, the plight of rosters and managers who don't like us, who just put us on terrible shifts. I'm here to help you see how you can take what you have already and your transferable nursing skill set and monetize it online. But before we do that, we need to understand that We've kind of been taught and trained as nurses to undervalue our skills and there's a couple of reasons why this is the case.

So number one, the first thing and the first reason why we feel this is the case is that we've been conditioned to undervalue ourselves. When you think about nursing and you think about the origins of nursing, we have been deeply conditioned to give selflessly. To other people. Okay. And so that sense of altruism and that sense of needing to give to others before we give to ourselves, create some narratives around or emotions or feelings are in guilt or discomfort when we start to charge for our services.

So that's the first thing. And we we look at Our hourly rate and we go, well, we get paid X amount per hour. So like, maybe that's what I should charge when I start an online business. But the reality is we don't want to bring the mindset from the nursing profession, from our bedside mindset into business because we want to step into the identity of being the nurse executive officer, the NEO.

Of your business and start to unravel any conditioning we have here so that you're not underpricing and undercharging and undervaluing the skills that you already have. The other reason is because the system massively undervalues us, right? It does not value what we bring to the table. How do we know that to be true?

Well look at our paychecks. It prioritizes. You know, metrics on KPIs. It doesn't prioritize or even support individuals. Right? And so over time, we know that we are replaceable. There's always another nurse. Well, maybe in the future there won't be, but there's always another nurse that can come in and pick up where we left off.

And so it makes us. Not hugely valuable as an asset to the organization, and that's that's shown to us right through pizza parties and through like, not providing milk and tea and coffee and things like that. So our system has kind of created this narrative for us that you should undervalue your skills because we do.

And then many of us feel like we're just not qualified enough because we've been trained in the system again and university and through society that in order to branch out into entrepreneurship, you've got to have, like, An amazing idea for an app or you know, you're not a business expert or you've got to go and do extra years of qualifications and studies to be able to offer something of value that people will pay for.

But in this day and age, that's just simply not the truth. There are skills that you're sitting on today from your lived experiences personally and professionally that I guarantee you there are people that would spend thousands of dollars to learn from you. And that's the economy, we're in the creator economy, and nurses, we have so much to offer here, we've got to stop undervaluing ourselves.

And then, the biggest thing, what this accumulates to, is that we have this narrative problem, we have this story, as a collective, right, that we We don't have the skills and we just don't have enough. And we've really got to shift from being a helper who is altruistic in nature, who undervalues our skills and our services, and the immense impact that we can have on the industry and people outside of the industry in our ideal niche, and move to a creator mindset.

Where we get to help people, but on our terms. Like, we give, but we also get back. And that's totally fine. We are compensated fairly, and then some, for the incredible value that we provide. We're not just throwing a Domino's pizza party. When, you know, the management can feel like they can be bothered. So I just wanted to land there because you probably have some of those narratives yourself around your own skill set and often the first question people say to me is like what would I even like offer to people and if that's your thought it's a normal thought to have but I want you to start thinking about as we go through this what you can bring to the table that's immensely valuable.

So these are the transferable nursing skills that make exceptional Nursepreneurs And I guarantee you have every single one of them. So the first one is your ability to critically think your ability to analyze complex situations, assess risks and make decisions under pressure. Often I say often always with limited resources.

Now this is super valuable in the business world because critical thinking is going to help you assess, identify, diagnose. Implement, evaluate, refine, tweak, tailor problems and solutions, create innovative solutions, and make strategic decisions that drive success moving forward. Critical thinking at the bedside is no different to critical thinking in your business.

And how it's going to make you rich, well, We're gonna use that. We're gonna use that amazing critical thinking skill to create a program or service that solves a pressing painkiller problem for your audience. One that they cannot wait to pay you for. For example, like streamline streamlining workflows in a healthcare setting, or helping new grants transition into nursing without burnout.

You can use your critical thinking skills to build a unique system or framework or methodology. Basically, it's a fancy word from going from A to B. where you help somebody in your business and you take them on that transformational journey based on the fact that you use your critical thinking to identify their problems and to solve them better than anybody else.

So that's the first transferable skill that is essential in business that you already have. Number two is communication. Well, nurses are expert communicators, right? And we spend all day explaining medical information to patients, families, colleagues, communicating, non verbal, therapeutic relationships, rapport building.

And we're really good at doing this in a way that people can understand. We're really good at speaking jargon, but we're also really good at lay language, right? And so clear communication is essential in all of the business foundations as a nursepreneur. In your marketing. In your coaching of your clients or your service provision of your cosmetic or IV hydration clients It's really essential in content creation and building rapport trust no like factors with your potential clients Through email marketing for example and sales calls.

So how can this make you rich? Well using your communication skills You can create engaging content for social media that really gets people to think you can write incredibly inspiring blogs You could create a youtube channel that educates and attracts your ideal clients It's going to help you develop a high ticket, mid ticket, consulting, service based business service where your ability to explain the complexity that comes with your business makes you the go to expert.

So it allows you to develop a service, coaching, consulting, IV hydration, cosmetic nursing, where you can use your communication skills to be able to break down complex information to become the go to expert in your niche. And to do it better than anybody else. So that's number two, is communication.

Number three is empathy. Right, like, nurses, we are so empathetic, like, we are literally empathy sponges. Our ability to understand and connect with people on a deep emotional level is our superpower. There is a lot of people on this earth that do not have the EQ, the emotional quotient, to be able to empathise with people.

And the beauty of empathy in business is that it builds trust and rapport, which are essential for sales, marketing, client retention, loyalty with your business, so like recurring revenue and recurring clients, and word of mouth referrals. So being really empathetic in your approach to nursepreneurship is already a superpower because it's going to allow you to, let's say as a coach or a life coach or a health coach.

Allow you to create a personalized program that deeply resonates with your client's particular needs, increasing the likelihood that they'll invest in your services. You're using that empathy driven skills to be able to connect emotionally with your audience, making them feel understood like they've never been understood before, which then allows them.

to give themselves permission to work with you. So number three is empathy. Number four is active listening. How often do you come across somebody that really listens? Like a nurse, that really tunes in, that really stops and hears what they're saying, but also hears what they're not saying. This is the power of nursing and active listening.

Truly hearing and understanding what your patients, your colleagues are saying, beyond their words, to identify their needs, their concerns, and their fears. And this is so valuable, because being able to do that is going to allow you to understand your client's pain points, what they're saying, but also what they're not saying.

And delivering and creating and using your critical thinking skills to create a solution that truly meets their needs. So for example how i've used this to make me quote unquote rich or to make me wealthy and to make me You know generate 100k online is in sales calls. I've been able to actively listen Two ears, one mouth is my methodology.

Two ears, so double the listening, less talking. And I'm like, I hear everything they say, everything they don't say. And then I tailor my pitch or my sales process to exactly what they need, making them more likely to invest in my program. Active listening is not only just about sales, it's about right at the beginning of your business when you're nursing your niche.

And you're exploring your market. You've got to sit and listen to people and really understand what it is that they need and want. So that when you co create your offer and your content and your freebie and your email marketing, that it's based on what they actually need and want and not what you just think they need and want.

This is super essential. So active listening is number four. Number five is natural educators. We educate every single friggin day. We teach patients, families about their treatments, medications, health conditions in a clear, relatable, lay language way, right? And the reality is of all of these business models that I talk about, coaching, consulting, courses, digital products, cosmetics, IV, hydration, it's all about education.

All of them. And so you could be creating it and selling an online course teaching nurses how to excel in interviews like I did. Or maybe you're the time management guru for nurses or nurse managers. Or you help people build their careers. You can package up your skills, knowledge and experience as you are today.

And you can create an educational offering through workshops, webinars, courses, one to one coaching. that teach people the skills that they are desperate to learn and they're desperate to learn from you because you've created a personal brand around it and there's that reduces all of the noise and all of the competition because you are the go to person for that niche.

So number five is you're a natural educator which makes building a business so much easier. Number six, this will surprise you but I hope to change your thinking around this which is sales. Nurses are exceptional at sales. We are so good at it, because we, every single day, influence and persuade people to do things that they don't want to do.

And that is what sales is, right? But sales, I joked there, like, we, we influence and persuade people to do things that are in their best interests, is what I should say. And our patients typically don't want to get out of bed, they're in pain, they don't want to go to the gym, they don't want to Go to the discharge lounge.

They don't want to take the medication that they really need for specific x, y, and z reasons. There are so many instances in a day to day basis where as nurses, we sell, but we just don't look at it like that. We just think we're helping and we're serving and that's the reality. That is what sales is. It is helping.

It's serving. It's not selling. You are taking somebody on a transformational journey. And the importance for you to see this here, if you want to be a nursepreneur or you are already, but you're struggling with sales, is how can you think about this through serving lens? I'm just serving them. I'm giving them information.

I'm answering their questions. I'm helping them see where they are and where they need to be or where they want to be and what's in the way. And I'm presenting a solution that I've curated for them specifically. And I've used my active listening to basically sell it back to them and I'm serving them along the way.

Right? So sales are so important in business, right? You need to make sales in order to stay in business. If you can sell your ideas as a nurse to patients that maybe don't even know you, that haven't seen your social media profile and all of the things, and they just trust you the minute you're there because you're a nurse.

You can sell your services online as a nursepreneur, where you build no like and trust factor, you have content that people are indulging and binging, they're getting to know you, they love your vibe, they love you as a person. Amazing. So that's how it will make you rich. Selling and you're already selling because you're using everything that we've just talked about there.

Empathy, active listening, communication, critical thinking, education, and you're packaging it all up and you're using your natural serving skills to create offers and convert people, followers into paying clients. Right. And the beauty is here, we're really good at doing this and selling and we do that through like trust building and storytelling and understanding that any questions or queries that people have, they're not objections.

They just need more information. And so when I teach sales, it's all about Yeah. Helping nurses see that you're serving, you're delivering information in a way that's consumable, and you're active listening, you're doing it in a trauma informed safe way that's not pushy or sleazy or salesy, it's not gross, and you're helping somebody come to an informed decision.

That's what we do every single day. So hopefully I've sold you on the fact that you're already a salesperson and that's going to make your nursing business so much easier to run. And number seven is coaching skills. So, you might not think of yourself as a coach. And in fact, many of the nursepreneurs that come to me, they say, Liam, I need to go and do a coaching certification.

And I say, did you know that you're already a coach? What do you think nursing is? We're guiding patients through challenges. We're helping them make decisions. We're motivating them when they're down. We're helping them see the reality. That is what coaching is. Coaching is a multi, multi million dollar industry.

And nurses already have the skill set. Sure, you can go and get more qualifications. I did. And I loved the process of doing that. It definitely helped my coaching. But it's not where I would start. I would not go and get a coaching certification and then build a business. I would start coaching. This is actually what I did.

I was coaching. I made my first six figures before I got a coaching certification. I did a six, I did six figures in revenue before I got my coaching certification. I was the only coach in the class that had done generated income. Everybody else was like, I'm going to do coaching and then build a business.

I did it the other way. And so I did that, I think, because I'm a natural coach. I've been doing it for over a decade. In fact, I've been doing it my whole life. Many of you that are drawn to coaching, in particular as a business model, you've been a coach your whole life. Without you really knowing it, right?

So how can it make you rich? Well, you can create an offering as a coach within your niche Using your natural ability to guide and motivate people you take them from A to B You create an incredible six figure offer That's so easy to sell them because it's stacked full of value and it solves their exact pain point and problem and you sell that And you generate consistent income with the skills that nursing taught you to learn.

So, just to recap, the skills that I've shared with you today are immensely valuable. They are literally the foundation, and that's why I'm talking about them, for you to be a successful nursepreneur. And you've got all of them in buckets. And so these skills, problem solving, critical thinking, empathy, communication, they are in high demand in the business world because not a lot of people that start businesses have these.

They have more of an uphill battle because they have to go and learn them. But these skills make you uniquely qualified to create incredible offers, solutions to people's problems, to build trust and to deliver results. So, just to recap, how are we going to use these skills that you already have, that the hospital paid you to learn?

To make you rich and wealthy as a nursepreneur, you're going to use critical thinking to identify high value problems and create paid solutions that people feel silly saying no to. They're like, oh my god, I really need this. We're going to leverage our communication skills, our ability to connect with people, and to educate our audience about why you are the go to expert in your niche and field.

We're going to build trust through empathy and active listening to attract The best potential clients you could ever work with and retain them to keep them in your wall. They keep coming back to you. We're going to teach what you know in a scalable format, like a group coaching offer or a course as you build and grow your business so that you can surpass your bedside income.

With the skills that you have learned as an educator within the system, as a nurse. And then you're going to use your coaching and sales skills to turn your passion and your purpose and the thing that lights you up into a profitable nurse led personal brand based business. You already have what it takes to be able to make yourself successful as an entrepreneur.

Those skills that make you a great nurse that people commend you on in the system will make you wildly successful as an entrepreneur. The question that you need to stop asking yourself is not do I have what it takes? It's Am I ready to take what I have and the skills that I have to create a business and a hybrid nursing career that I love, one that I don't need to escape from?

So my friend, I want you to see yourself and what I've shared with you today, whether it's starting to brainstorm how you could pull all this together or thinking about Simply starting to believe in the potential that you have your success starts today as a nursepreneur with the skills that you already have.
