Speaker:

Today I wanna talk about the seasons that we

Speaker:

don't talk about enough.

Speaker:

I feel nervous about this because this isn't totally

Speaker:

businessy, but oh my goodness, the women that I work with

Speaker:

are struggling with this.

Speaker:

We are gonna talk about perimenopause, menopause,

Speaker:

and showing up anyway.

Speaker:

I wanna start this episode with a story.

Speaker:

My mom at 37 got diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Speaker:

She had hot flushes.

Speaker:

Hot sweats.

Speaker:

She didn't sleep much.

Speaker:

Her weight was all over the place.

Speaker:

She thought she was going mad.

Speaker:

She had brain fog.

Speaker:

She got diagnosed with bipolar.

Speaker:

I'm not sure it was bipolar.

Speaker:

I think it was menopause that sent her on a whole

Speaker:

trajectory, which you've heard about in this podcast before.

Speaker:

I got married late.

Speaker:

I'm the second wife of my current husband.

Speaker:

He happens to be my first and only husband, and we

Speaker:

had, we tried really hard to get Evie and we had

Speaker:

multiple miscarriages before Evie and a couple after.

Speaker:

And I remember after the final miscarriage, I was

Speaker:

37, I went to the doctor and would run some blood

Speaker:

tests and she said, yep.

Speaker:

And very doctor mannerisms, as you can imagine.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

You're not gonna get pregnant.

Speaker:

You've headed into perimenopause and

Speaker:

I'm like, what?

Speaker:

Excuse me at 37, are you sure?

Speaker:

I'm 37.

Speaker:

It's, I'm very young and I have, my body was

Speaker:

able to get pregnant.

Speaker:

She's like, you'll never hold.

Speaker:

You'll never hold enough to have another baby.

Speaker:

Now, when you are desperate to give a sibling to.

Speaker:

One of your children and I already had two bonus kids,

Speaker:

so I am so incredibly lucky and grateful for that total of

Speaker:

three children, but I really wanted a sibling for Evie.

Speaker:

When you get told point blank, it's not gonna happen.

Speaker:

Even if you go on IVF, you have a 5% chance and you're

Speaker:

heading into perimenopause, it's like bang, bang, bang.

Speaker:

And I'm just like, what?

Speaker:

Now I've just turned 48.

Speaker:

That is 11 years in perimenopause.

Speaker:

And over the time I have thought I was going mad.

Speaker:

I've had the hot sweats, I've had the brain fog, I've had

Speaker:

the frozen shoulder, I've had the slurring of words.

Speaker:

You name it, I have had it.

Speaker:

So I am not coming to you.

Speaker:

With zero lived experience, I'm coming to you with 11

Speaker:

years of the ups and downs of not being able to have

Speaker:

another baby, of having multiple miscarriages that

Speaker:

my body just would not hold and of sitting in

Speaker:

perimenopause for a long time.

Speaker:

I don't feel like enough business conversations happen

Speaker:

with this season that we're about to talk about.

Speaker:

We've talked about the hormones, the brain fog,

Speaker:

the hot flushes, the sleepless nights, the tears

Speaker:

that come out of nowhere.

Speaker:

The partners who gently ask, are you all right?

Speaker:

And then they back away slowly.

Speaker:

because this season is so real, 10 years I've been

Speaker:

living in this season, and if you're in it, you will

Speaker:

know exactly what I mean.

Speaker:

And here's the thing, life still goes on.

Speaker:

Business still needs you.

Speaker:

Your kids still need you.

Speaker:

Nothing stops, and you can still show up even

Speaker:

when your body is throwing those curve balls at you.

Speaker:

This affects so many women in business, but often it

Speaker:

just sits quietly in the backgrounds of our lives.

Speaker:

Families call their moms crazy.

Speaker:

Moms are hanging out to just escape their own skin,

Speaker:

and this season of hormones shifting and changing

Speaker:

can make you feel like a stranger in your own body.

Speaker:

One minute, you're fine.

Speaker:

The next minute you're standing in front of the

Speaker:

freezer just trying to get some cool air, and then you

Speaker:

have to step into a coaching call or run a workshop

Speaker:

or lead a team meeting.

Speaker:

And I wanna acknowledge this season with complete honesty,

Speaker:

compassion, and a little bit of humor, because we can talk

Speaker:

about strategy all day long.

Speaker:

But some days the biggest challenge is simply getting

Speaker:

a good night's sleep.

Speaker:

The hormones that hijack us start there, shall we?

Speaker:

Perimenopause is not gentle.

Speaker:

One day you fe feel completely normal.

Speaker:

And the next, your emotions have decided to take you

Speaker:

on a rollercoaster that you did not buy a ticket for.

Speaker:

The brain fog is real.

Speaker:

I have walked into rooms with complete confidence, stopped

Speaker:

mid-sentence and thought.

Speaker:

I have absolutely no idea what I was about to say.

Speaker:

And this comes from someone who speaks for a living.

Speaker:

So there's that.

Speaker:

Then there's the hot flushes.

Speaker:

You're in a meeting nodding along professionally, and

Speaker:

your body suddenly decides to recreate the core

Speaker:

temperature of the sun.

Speaker:

Night sweats.

Speaker:

Let's talk night sweats.

Speaker:

Let's talk disturbed sleep.

Speaker:

Let's talk.

Speaker:

Waking up at 3:00 AM for absolutely no reason.

Speaker:

And then let's try talking about being

Speaker:

a fully functioning adult businesswoman

Speaker:

the very next day.

Speaker:

If you are experiencing any of this, Please know

Speaker:

you're not imagining it.

Speaker:

You are not weak.

Speaker:

You are not being dramatic.

Speaker:

Your body is literally recalibrating.

Speaker:

I like to talk about the partners who love us through

Speaker:

this, even though most of the time they have NFI.

Speaker:

What is going on?

Speaker:

My husband is amazing.

Speaker:

There is a guy on Instagram, I must find him for you.

Speaker:

His name is Mitch J Academy or something like that,

Speaker:

and he talks about, he's a personal trainer and his wife

Speaker:

is thick into perimenopause, and he talks about how she

Speaker:

breathes fire and that she's an angry dragon, That men as

Speaker:

husbands or we as partners need to be considerate of it

Speaker:

and basically shut up from time to time and just support

Speaker:

those, people in our lives who are going through that.

Speaker:

So I wanna shout out a moment for the husbands,

Speaker:

for the partners, for the significant others,

Speaker:

because they're learning just as we are, right?

Speaker:

The ones who wake up at the sound of us throwing off

Speaker:

the duna for the 10th time.

Speaker:

The one who gently asks if we're all right while we

Speaker:

cry because our favorite mug was in the dishwasher.

Speaker:

The ones who sit beside us with a cup of tea and

Speaker:

pretend not to notice when we are fanning ourselves

Speaker:

with the nearest notebook, we appreciate them.

Speaker:

We love them.

Speaker:

Sometimes we forget to say that.

Speaker:

We have to show up anyway, this is just part of the job.

Speaker:

This season is hard.

Speaker:

It's freaking hard, and yet business does

Speaker:

not pause for it.

Speaker:

Blokes don't have to deal with it.

Speaker:

By the way, if you're a bloke listening to this, go

Speaker:

give your partner a cuddle.

Speaker:

She probably needs it.

Speaker:

Clients still show up, meetings still happen.

Speaker:

Revenue still needs to be generated.

Speaker:

Oh my goodness, the list goes on.

Speaker:

But here's what I want you to hear.

Speaker:

Showing up does not mean

Speaker:

pushing through

Speaker:

like nothing is happening.

Speaker:

Showing up means adjusting in a way that honors your body,

Speaker:

your energy, and your needs.

Speaker:

Some days you'll need to reschedule.

Speaker:

Personally, don't love the reschedule.

Speaker:

Some days you'll need to do that.

Speaker:

Some days you'll need to have a nap before you

Speaker:

can tackle your inbox.

Speaker:

Totally fine too.

Speaker:

And some days you'll need to lower the bar

Speaker:

so you can keep moving.

Speaker:

That's a hard one for me.

Speaker:

I have very high expectations of myself.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

But it is all right.

Speaker:

It is not failure.

Speaker:

It is wisdom.

Speaker:

We are women of a certain age.

Speaker:

We have lived enough life to know that seasons ebb and

Speaker:

flow, and this one will too.

Speaker:

By golly, I wish it would hurry up for me just quietly.

Speaker:

11 years is a long time.

Speaker:

And what I want you to know is that we can

Speaker:

acknowledge the season without letting it own us.

Speaker:

I wanna be clear that this is a season.

Speaker:

It's not a sentence you might feel off.

Speaker:

You might feel so unlike yourself.

Speaker:

You might feel a bit wobbly, but life does not

Speaker:

stop because your hormones are having a rave party.

Speaker:

I wish it did.

Speaker:

You still have dreams, you still have goals.

Speaker:

You still have a business that needs your leadership

Speaker:

and needs your brilliance.

Speaker:

You can honor your body and still keep moving forward.

Speaker:

You can rest and still build momentum.

Speaker:

You can have brain fog and still have genius ideas.

Speaker:

You can have hot flushes and still be the most

Speaker:

powerful woman in the room.

Speaker:

You're not broken.

Speaker:

You're just evolving.

Speaker:

So what I wanna say is this, my lovelies, oh my goodness.

Speaker:

If you are in this season of perimenopause or menopause,

Speaker:

I want you to know this.

Speaker:

You are not on your own, you are not behind.

Speaker:

You are not failing.

Speaker:

You're going through a transition that

Speaker:

millions of women have traveled before you.

Speaker:

Take care of your health.

Speaker:

Ask for what you need.

Speaker:

Slow down where you can, and keep showing up for

Speaker:

yourself and your business.

Speaker:

Because even in this season, even in this

Speaker:

season, you are capable of extraordinary things.

Speaker:

If you're listening to this and thinking, Emma, this is

Speaker:

exactly the season I'm in.

Speaker:

Firstly, sorry.

Speaker:

But secondly, if you're thinking I could really

Speaker:

use some support right now, someone who gets it,

Speaker:

someone who understands it, then I wanna gently

Speaker:

invite you to consider working with me one-on-one.

Speaker:

This stage of life can feel wobbly, confusing.

Speaker:

And a bit lonely.

Speaker:

Your body is doing one thing, your brain is doing another,

Speaker:

and you're still trying to hold a business together.

Speaker:

You do not need to navigate that on your own.

Speaker:

And in my one-on-one coaching, we look at the whole picture,

Speaker:

your energy, your priorities, your business model, your

Speaker:

rhythms, and we shape a plan that works with this

Speaker:

season, not against it.

Speaker:

And if you want clarity, structure, and accountability,

Speaker:

and a place to talk honestly about both business

Speaker:

and life, then working together might be exactly

Speaker:

what you need right now.

Speaker:

You can reach out through my website, send me a message.

Speaker:

I would love to support you.

Speaker:

Until next week, please take care of yourself.

Speaker:

Honor what your body is asking for, and remember that you can

Speaker:

build beautiful business even in the middle of this season.
