Radical Generosity A Progressive reading of Second Corinthians 8:1:7 on Daily Bible refresh with Dr.
Speaker ABrad Miller hello, my good friend Dr.
Speaker ABrad Miller here with the Daily Bible Refresh, a reading of the New Testament using the Revised Common Lectionary from a progressive perspective.
Speaker AWe're in year C of a three year cycle, the Pentecost season.
Speaker AWe bring you the reading of the Bible New Testament that is understandable.
Speaker AWe use the message version relatable.
Speaker AWe give you some points to ponder, an applicable, give you an action step.
Speaker AWe do all of that in under 10 minutes or so with a prayer.
Speaker AIt's all brought to you by voiceofgoddaily.com that's the home of the ABC 123 Bible Study Message and the place where we have a goal of getting the audible word of God into two million ears, a million people of 2028.
Speaker AHere's our reading for the day from 2nd Corinthians 8:1:7.
Speaker AIt's called the Offering.
Speaker ANow friends, I want to report on the surprising and generous ways in which God is working in the churches in Macedonia Province.
Speaker AFierce troubles came down on the people in those churches, pushing them to the very limit.
Speaker AThe trial exposed their true colors.
Speaker AThey were incredibly happy, though desperately poor.
Speaker AThe pressure triggered something totally unexpected, an outpouring of pure and generous gifts.
Speaker AI was there and saw it for myself.
Speaker AThey gave offerings of whatever they could, far more than they could afford, pleading for the privilege of helping out the relief of poor Christians.
Speaker AThis was totally spontaneous, entirely their own idea, and caught us completely off guard, watt explains.
Speaker AIt was that they had first given themselves unreservedly to God and to us and the other.
Speaker AGiving simply flowed out of the purposes of God working in their lives.
Speaker AThat's what prompted prompted us to ask Titus to bring the relief offering to your attention so that what was so well begun could be finished up.
Speaker AYou do so well in so many things.
Speaker AYou trust God.
Speaker AYou're articulate, you're insightful, you're passionate.
Speaker AYou love us.
Speaker ANow.
Speaker ADo your best in this too.
Speaker AWell, in today's reflection, we're just talking about Paul's powerful message here, about generosity, about community care, and about economic justice.
Speaker AFrom a progressive lens, here are some points to ponder.
Speaker ANumber one is about the politics of joy.
Speaker AIn scarcity.
Speaker APaul describes a remarkable phenomenon, people experiencing fierce troubles and desperate poverty who nonetheless found incredible joy in giving.
Speaker AThis challenges our consumer driven understanding of happiness and suggests that true joy might be found in building mutual aid networks and caring communities rather than an accumulation of wealth.
Speaker ASecond point is about a systematic change through collective action.
Speaker AThe Macedonian church's response wasn't just about individual charity.
Speaker AIt was collective action to address poverty within the community.
Speaker AIn progressive Christianity, this is a model for addressing systematic inequities through organized community response rather than relying solely on individual philanthropic gestures.
Speaker AA third point is about redefining abundance.
Speaker AWell, Paul mentions that they have, quote, far more, they have gave far more than they could afford.
Speaker AHe's highlighting a radical understanding of abundance from a progressive perspective.
Speaker AThis isn't about irresponsible giving, but about reimagining what we truly need and challenging the scarcity mindset that that capitalism often instills in us.
Speaker AHere's your action step.
Speaker AExamine your relationship with resources, both personal and your community resources and the community needs that you have.
Speaker AConsider joining or starting some sort of a mutual aid network in your area.
Speaker AThis might be like a food pantry for instance, or a clothes closet if one exists.
Speaker AContribute what you can, whether it's time or skills or resources.
Speaker AIf there isn't one, maybe you need to research how to begin one.
Speaker ARemember, mutual aid isn't about charity.
Speaker AIt's about building systems of reciprocal community care.
Speaker AWe're going to come back with a closing prayer here in just a minute.
Speaker ADid want you to know that we do have an incredible resource for you.
