Speaker AHere's our reading for the day from Luke 10:25 37 defining neighbor just then a religion scholar stood up with a question to test Jesus.
Speaker ATeacher, what do I need to get to eternal life?
Speaker AAnd he answered, what's written in God's law?
Speaker AHow do you interpret it?
Speaker AAnd he said, that you love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and muscle and intelligence, and that you love your neighbor as well as you do yourself.
Speaker AGood answer, said Jesus.
Speaker ADo it and you'll live.
Speaker ALooking for a loophole, he asked, and just how would you define neighbor?
Speaker AJesus answered by telling a story.
Speaker AThere once was a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho, and on the way he was attacked by robbers and they took his clothes, beat him up and went off, leaving him half dead.
Speaker ALuckily, a priest was on his way down the same road.
Speaker AWhen he saw him, he angled across to the other side.
Speaker AThen a Levite, a religious man, showed up and he also avoided the religious.
Speaker AThe injured man, now a Samaritan, was traveling the road came on him, and when he saw the man's condition, his heart went out to him.
Speaker AHe gave him first aid, disinfecting and bandage, bandaging his wounds.
Speaker AThen he lifted him onto his donkey, led him to an inn and made him comfortable.
Speaker AIn the morning he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, take good care of him.
Speaker AIf it costs any more, put it on my bill.
Speaker AI'll pay you on my way back.
Speaker ASo what do you think?
Speaker AWhich of the three became a neighbor to the man attacked by robbers?
Speaker AThe one who treated him kindly.
Speaker AThe religion scholars responded Jesus said, go and do the same.
Speaker AWell, my friends, we're exploring this passage of scripture, one of the most famous parables in the Bible that challenges you and I to radically redefine our understanding of community and care in this passage of scripture.
Speaker AThis legal expert was trying to justify limiting his circle of concern by asking Jesus to define neighbor.
Speaker AAnd Jesus responds with the story that dismantles this guy.
Speaker AThis completely dismantles religious, ethnic and social boundaries.
Speaker ASo let's get into some points to ponder.
Speaker AThe first has to do about institutional indifference.
Speaker AThe priest and Levite were representatives of a religious institution and they chose to maintain ritual purity over helping somebody in need.
Speaker AThis challenges us to examine how our own institutions, traditions and proper ways of doing things might prevent us from showing up for those in crisis.
Speaker ASo what systems of respectability keep us from radical love?
Speaker ASomething to ponder.
Speaker AA second point to ponder is the Samaritan as revolutionary.
Speaker AJesus deliberately chose a Samaritan, someone considered racially and religiously as, quote the other as the hero.
Speaker AThis would have shocked his audience today.
Speaker AWho would be the Samaritan in our story?
Speaker AWhich groups do we consider, quote the other, who might actually be showing us how to live out divine love more faithfully?
Speaker AOne more point to Potter is going about beyond individual charity.
Speaker ANotice how the Samaritan doesn't just offer immediate help.
Speaker AHe ensures ongoing care through systematic support, paying the innkeeper, promising future coverage of expenses.
Speaker AThis challenges both individual focused charity models and corporations.
Speaker AQuote thoughts and prayers Responses how do we move from temporary aid to sustainable support, Support and systematic change?
Speaker AHere's your action step.
Speaker APractice boundary crossing solidarity.
Speaker AThat is Identify a group you maybe tend to avoid or judge.
Speaker AOr it may be about political differences or social status or cultural background, any number of things.
Speaker AAnd find an organization led by members of that community who are doing some form of justice work and support their efforts not as trying to be a savior, but as an ally, a humble ally and with your resources and presence and willingness to listen and learn.
Speaker AWe're going to come back with a closing prayer here in a moment.
Speaker AJust a reminder.
