Speaker 1 00:00:54

Here is your host, Randy Black.

Speaker 2 00:00:57

Today we will explore the authority and the mission of Jesus through two very powerful passages of Scripture.

Speaker 2 00:01:07

Mark chapter 1.

Speaker 2 00:01:08

verses twenty-one through twenty-seven, and Luke chapter four, verses thirty-one through thirty-six.

Speaker 2 00:01:16

These scriptures reveal Jesus' divine authority over evil.

Speaker 2 00:01:22

and his dedication to fulfilling God's will.

Speaker 2 00:01:26

These passages share with us the story of Jesus healing the demon-possessed man in Capernaum.

Speaker 2 00:01:35

Let's open up today's lesson with a prayer.

Speaker 2 00:01:39

Heavenly Father, we come before you in awe of your Son, Jesus Christ, who speaks with unparalleled authority

Speaker 2 00:01:47

and compassion.

Speaker 2 00:01:48

As we study these passages, help us to grasp the depth of his power and the urgency of his mission

Speaker 2 00:01:59

Open our hearts to be receptive to your word and grant us the wisdom and strength to follow Jesus' example in our daily lives.

Speaker 2 00:02:10

In Jesus' name we pray.

Speaker 2 00:02:12

Amen.

Speaker 3 00:02:15

Mark, chapter 1, verses 21 through 27.

Speaker 3 00:02:19

And they went into Capernaum, and straightway on the Sabbath day he entered into the synagogue and taught.

Speaker 3 00:02:25

And they were astonished at his doctrine, for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

Speaker 3 00:02:32

And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit

Speaker 3 00:02:36

And he cried out, saying, Let us alone.

Speaker 3 00:02:38

What have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth?

Speaker 3 00:02:42

Art thou come to destroy us?

Speaker 3 00:02:44

I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

Speaker 3 00:02:48

And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace and come out of him.

Speaker 3 00:02:52

And when the unclean spirit had torn him and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him

Speaker 3 00:02:59

And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this?

Speaker 3 00:03:05

What new doctrine is this?

Speaker 3 00:03:07

For with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

Speaker 3 00:03:14

Luke chapter 4 verses 31 through 36 and came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath days.

Speaker 3 00:03:21

And they were astonished at his doctrine, for his word was with power.

Speaker 3 00:03:26

And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil

Speaker 3 00:03:30

and cried out with a loud voice, saying, Let us alone.

Speaker 3 00:03:34

What have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth?

Speaker 3 00:03:37

Art thou come to destroy us?

Speaker 3 00:03:40

I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God

Speaker 3 00:03:43

And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace and come out of him.

Speaker 3 00:03:48

And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him and hurt him not.

Speaker 3 00:03:53

And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this!

Speaker 3 00:03:59

For with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.

Speaker 2 00:04:06

In Mark, we see Jesus entering the synagogue and Capernaum and teaching with an authority that just astonished the people.

Speaker 2 00:04:18

Unlike the scribes, who relied on traditional interpretations and teachings, Jesus spoke

Speaker 2 00:04:26

with a direct and commanding presence that reflected his divine nature.

Speaker 2 00:04:33

His authority is further demonstrated here

Speaker 2 00:04:36

when he encounters a man with an unclean spirit, a man possessed by a demon

Speaker 2 00:04:44

The Spirit immediately recognizes Jesus and fears his power.

Speaker 2 00:04:50

It acknowledges him as the Holy One of God.

Speaker 2 00:04:54

Jesus commands the Spirit to be silent and to come out of the man, and the Spirit obeys.

Speaker 2 00:05:02

This act amazes the people who marvel at Jesus' new teaching and his authority over these unclean spirits

Speaker 2 00:05:13

Similarly, in Luke, Jesus is there.

Speaker 2 00:05:16

He's teaching in Capernaum on the Sabbath, and the people are astonished at his doctrine because his words are with power.

Speaker 2 00:05:25

They are the opposite of the teachings that they have heard for so many years from the scribes.

Speaker 2 00:05:31

He encounters this man possessed by the unclean spirit, he who cries out in recognition of Jesus and the fear of him.

Speaker 2 00:05:39

And he calls him the Holy One of God, just as we saw in the book of Mark.

Speaker 2 00:05:44

Jesus rebukes the Spirit, commands it to be silent, and orders it to exit the man, to come out of him, and the Spirit obeys.

Speaker 2 00:05:52

The people are amazed.

Speaker 2 00:05:54

They marvel at the authority and the power of Jesus' command over this unclean spirit.

Speaker 2 00:06:00

Both of these passages highlight the same encounter.

Speaker 2 00:06:05

They highlight Jesus' authority and his power, particularly in his ability to command the unclean spirits.

Speaker 2 00:06:14

The people in both accounts are astonished by his teachings.

Speaker 2 00:06:19

They recognize a distinct difference between Jesus' words and those of the scribes.

Speaker 2 00:06:25

The unclean spirits in both passages recognize Jesus' divine identity, and they fear his power, and it leads to their immediate obedience to his commands.

Speaker 2 00:06:36

These similarities reinforce the consistent theme of Jesus' divine authority and his mission to confront and overcome evil.

Speaker 2 00:06:51

We have some key takeaways to look at from this scripture.

Speaker 2 00:06:55

The first is simply the authority of Jesus

Speaker 2 00:07:00

Jesus taught with authority that astonished the people.

Speaker 2 00:07:05

Unlike the scribes, he spoke with divine authority and power.

Speaker 2 00:07:10

Our second takeaway is his power over evil.

Speaker 2 00:07:13

Jesus demonstrated his authority over evil by commanding the unclean spirit to come out of this man.

Speaker 2 00:07:21

The Spirit obeyed him, showing his dominance over the spiritual realms.

Speaker 2 00:07:29

Our next takeaway is that the the recognition by the spirits, the unclean spirit immediately recognized Jesus.

Speaker 2 00:07:38

It knew who he was.

Speaker 2 00:07:39

It called him the Holy One of God.

Speaker 2 00:07:44

It acknowledges immediately his divine nature and his mission.

Speaker 2 00:07:50

Our fourth takeaway is that this is the mission of Jesus.

Speaker 2 00:07:54

Jesus' mission is not only to teach, but to actively confront and defeat the forces of evil.

Speaker 2 00:08:02

His actions demonstrate his commitment to bringing liberation and healing to those oppressed by the evil.

Speaker 2 00:08:10

And our last takeaway is the astonishment of the people.

Speaker 2 00:08:16

The people were simply amazed at Jesus' teachings.

Speaker 2 00:08:20

and then at his actions.

Speaker 2 00:08:22

They recognized a new doctrine, different from what they had heard from the scribes, and that this doctrine carried the true authority and power of God.

Speaker 2 00:08:32

It was unlike anything.

Speaker 2 00:08:35

they had ever experienced before.

Speaker 2 00:08:40

As we go throughout our day and our week and we reflect on these passages

Speaker 2 00:08:45

were reminded of the unparalleled authority of Jesus.

Speaker 2 00:08:50

His words and his actions were not only transformative, but they also carried the power to confront and defeat evil directly.

Speaker 2 00:09:00

His authority was evident in the way he taught and in his command over the unclean spirits, which recognized him immediately as the Holy One of God.

Speaker 2 00:09:13

Think about the areas in your own life where you need to recognize and submit to Jesus' authority

Speaker 2 00:09:22

Are there any unclean spirits, whether they be fears or doubts or unhealthy habits, that need to be rebuked and cast out in the name of Jesus

Speaker 2 00:09:34

Remember that Jesus' authority is not just historical, but it is alive and active in our lives today.

Speaker 2 00:09:44

Consider also the mission of Jesus we see here in this scripture.

Speaker 2 00:09:50

His sustenance came from doing the will of God and finishing his work.

Speaker 2 00:09:56

As his followers, we are called to join in this mission.

Speaker 2 00:10:01

The fields are indeed ripe for harvest, and there is an urgent need for laborers.

Speaker 2 00:10:07

Reflect on how you can participate in this mission in your community, in your church, and beyond

Speaker 2 00:10:15

How can you help others recognize the authority and the compassion of Jesus in their own lives?

Speaker 2 00:10:24

Finally, be inspired by the astonishment of the people who witnessed Jesus' authority and power.

Speaker 2 00:10:32

Let their amazement stir in you a deeper awe and reverence for Christ.

Speaker 2 00:10:40

Allow this reverence to transform your approach to faith and your daily walk.

Speaker 2 00:10:49

Let's close out our lesson now with a prayer.

Speaker 2 00:10:53

Lord Jesus, we thank you for your authoritative teaching and your power over evil.

Speaker 2 00:11:00

We are grateful for the way you care for us and deliver us from darkness.

Speaker 2 00:11:06

Help us to understand and embrace our role in the harvest.

Speaker 2 00:11:12

Give us the courage and the dedication to do the will of the Father just as you did.

Speaker 2 00:11:22

Open our eyes to see the ripe fields that are around us and strengthen us to be faithful laborers in your kingdom.

Speaker 2 00:11:32

In your holy name we pray.

Speaker 2 00:11:36

Amen.

Speaker 2 00:14:13
