Speaker AGo over there and pick that up.
Speaker AHere's our reading for the day from Luke 9, 1827 Reading from the Mess Don't Run from Suffering One time when Jesus was off praying by himself, his disciples nearby, he asked him, what are the crowds saying about me, about who I am?
Speaker AAnd they said, john the baptizer.
Speaker AOthers say Elijah.
Speaker AStill others say that one of the prophets from long ago has come back.
Speaker AThen he asked, and who?
Speaker AAnd you?
Speaker AWhat are you saying about me?
Speaker AWho am I?
Speaker APeter answered, the Messiah of God.
Speaker AJesus then warned them to keep it quiet.
Speaker AThey were to tell no one of what what Peter had said.
Speaker AAnd he went on it is necessary that the Son of man proceed to an ordeal of suffering, be tried and found guilty by the religious leaders, the high priests and religion scholars be killed and on the third day be raised up alive.
Speaker AThen he told them what they could expect for themselves.
Speaker AAnyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead.
Speaker AYou're not in the driver's seat.
Speaker AI am.
Speaker ADon't run from suffering.
Speaker AEmbrace it.
Speaker AFollow me and I'll show you how.
Speaker ASelf help is no help at all.
Speaker ASelf sacrifice is the way, my way to find yourself your true self.
Speaker AWhat good would it do to get everything you want and lose you, the real you?
Speaker AIf any of you is embarrassed with me and the way I'm leading you know that the Son of Man will be far more embarrassed with you when he arrives in all his splendor in company with the Father and the holy angels.
Speaker AThis isn't you realize, high in the sky, by and by, some of you have taken their stand right here, are going to see it happen, see with their own eyes the kingdom of God.
Speaker AWow.
Speaker ASome powerful things that Jesus says there.
Speaker AAnd this is a challenging passage where Jesus invites his disciples and us to think hard, to really think and rethink about what it means to follow a path of authentic faith and transformative love.
Speaker AHere's some points to ponder.
Speaker AIt's about going beyond labels and categories.
Speaker AWhen Jesus asked about his identity, the crowds try to fit him into familiar categories.
Speaker AJohn Elijah, one of the prophets of old.
Speaker AThe tendency is to categorize and contain the divine or God stuff happens.
Speaker AToday.
Speaker AProgressive faith invites us to move beyond rigid definitions in predetermined boxes, recognizing that the sacred often shows up in unexpected ways and places.
Speaker AAnother point is about transformative suffering.
Speaker AJesus speaks of suffering not as punishment or divine plan, but as a natural consequence of challenging unjust systems and standing with the marginalized.
Speaker AWhen we work for justice and inclusion, we often face resistance from established powers, both religious and secular.
Speaker AThis suffering isn't something to seek out, but rather to accept as a part of transformative work.
Speaker AOne more point to ponder.
Speaker AIt's about the authentic self versus the social self.
Speaker AJesus warning about losing our true self speaks powerfully to our current culture of carefully curated social media Personas and performance based spirituality.
Speaker ATrue liberation comes not through self promotion, but through or self preservation, but through authentic engagement with the work of love and justice, even when it cost us social capital or comfort.
Speaker AHere's your action step.
Speaker AIdentify an area where you've been choosing comfort over authentic engagement with justice work.
Speaker APerhaps it's staying silent about racism to keep peace with some group of people or family gathering, or avoiding advocacy for LBGTQ persons to maintain religious acceptance.
Speaker ATake some concrete step towards an authentic expression of your values, even if it creates discomfort.
Speaker AWe're going to pray in just a moment, but I want you to know that we do have a Bible study resource for you.
