Foreign.
Speaker BHello, and welcome to Binge Watch, the podcast, where we take a look at the hottest new TV and film releases on streaming television platforms.
Speaker BI'm Hannah Fernando, the group editor of Women and Women Home magazine.
Speaker AAnd I'm Ian McKeown, writer on TV and Satellite Week, TV Times, what's on TV and whattowatch.com and today, we're looking at the new releases that will be available on Friday 8th August, 2025, including Sam Claflin's new adaptation of literary classic the Count of Monte Cristo on you and the belated return of classic animation series King of the Hill on Disney plus.
Speaker BAnd we'll also be returning to Nevermoor Academy and a new and brilliant season of Wednesday on Netflix.
Speaker BAnd checking out series two of comedy Platonic, starring Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen on Apple tv.
Speaker BBut first, Ian, what is in the news?
Speaker AMillie, Bobby Brown and Gabrielle LaBelle will star in the Netflix romantic comedy Just Picture it.
Speaker AAs a pair of college students whose phones start behaving very strangely.
Speaker AThey could have called it Stranger Rings, couldn't they?
Speaker BHannah, I see what you did there.
Speaker AWhat else is in the news?
Speaker BWell, in Apple TV's adaptation of Philip Kerr's acclaimed Berlin noir crime novels, Jack Lowden will play 1920s German detective Bernie Gunther, who is hunting for a serial killer.
Speaker AGood stuff.
Speaker AWell, we have three very good returning shows for you, plus one new one which we're going to start with on you, available as a box set.
Speaker AWe have the Count of Monte Cristo and here's a clip.
Speaker AI was robbed of 15 years of my life.
Speaker BYou're under arrest.
Speaker AThe only woman I ever loved was taken from me in that time.
Speaker AEdwin, don't come back to you.
Speaker AI've not been put on trial.
Speaker AI'm not a criminal.
Speaker AYou're a spy working for Napoleon.
Speaker AThis is a mistake.
Speaker ANo.
Speaker AI want revenge.
Speaker ASo most people will be familiar with the fact that this is a classic novel by Alexandre Dumas and it's all about this sailor called Edmond Dantes who is imprisoned in a fortress, an island fortress, but he's wrongly imprisoned because a couple of people plot against him and pretend that he's a spy for Napoleon Bonaparte.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker AAnd it's the story of, well, initially, how that comes about and then how he sets out to get his revenge.
Speaker AIt's directed by Billy August and it stars Sam Claflin, who was in Daisy Jones and the Six, and acting royalty Jeremy Irons.
Speaker ASo this kind of pretty dreadful review in the Guardian.
Speaker AI have to say, they were very Rude about it.
Speaker AI think it's perfectly serviceable.
Speaker ASo, yeah, episode one, we start off at sea and Dantes has been promoted to be the captain, but one of his shipmates is very jealous.
Speaker AAnd then when he gets home and is reunited with his sweetheart, there is a soldier who also fancies her.
Speaker ASo he's got his own reason to get Dantes out of the way.
Speaker ASo that's the setup.
Speaker AYes.
Speaker AWe're going to meet Jeremy Irons, who is another prisoner in the fortress, and, yeah, yada, yada, yada, he'll escape and then he'll, you know, set about finding the people who are responsible for him basically losing 15 years of his life and his beloved.
Speaker ASo, yeah, I thought it looked great.
Speaker AI mean, the review was complaining about the plot.
Speaker AWell, the plot is from the book, so I look forward to seeing Jeremy Irons in it because he's good in everything.
Speaker AClaflin is great as a kind of a.
Speaker AWell, initially as a sort of young, dashing hero, and then.
Speaker AAnd then he also has to play him bearded 15 years later, after he's had an absolutely horrific time in solitary confinement.
Speaker ASo, yeah, I thought it was a perfectly good period drama.
Speaker AWhat did you think, Hannah?
Speaker BWell, as you say, I mean, you can't really deviate from the book.
Speaker BAnd they'd be complaining if you did deviate from the book, wouldn't they?
Speaker BSay they can't get it right with this.
Speaker BDo you know what?
Speaker BI really like the story of this.
Speaker BIt's quite scary, isn't it?
Speaker BSomeone sort of being wronged when they shouldn't be, and then that consuming their life, which it absolutely would consume your life and then kind of consuming you in terms of your revenge and what you're going to do and all the rest of it.
Speaker BSo I think that for me, it was.
Speaker BI don't know if it's something that.
Speaker BI think, oh, yeah, I must watch that.
Speaker BBut actually, the premise of this and the book, which I haven't read, but I think I might read.
Speaker BI don't know, it just.
Speaker BIt kind of really resonates.
Speaker BIt's really.
Speaker BIt's you sort of.
Speaker BI often think you could.
Speaker BIt could happen.
Speaker BIt.
Speaker BCould it happen to anyone where you're, you know, you're.
Speaker BYou're accused of something, you do something, you know, and you're banged up, something you didn't do or whatever it might be.
Speaker BSo, yeah, I thought it wasn't for me, but it actually was.
Speaker AYes.
Speaker AAnd unfortunately, when it happens these days, Hannah, it's usually the fault of the police.
Speaker AIsn't it?
Speaker AAnyway, we don't have time to discuss that because we're moving swiftly on to Netflix for the welcome return of Wednesday.
Speaker AAnd here's a clip.
Speaker AWednesday Adams, it is an honor to meet the savior of Nevermore.
Speaker BCan I get your autograph?
Speaker BI only signed my name in blood.
Speaker BI would expect nothing less.
Speaker BI never said it was my own blood.
Speaker BWe need to set bear traps out here.
Speaker BYes, it is the return.
Speaker BI don't think anybody, or perhaps they did.
Speaker BPerhaps it was just me.
Speaker BNo, I don't think anybody realized quite how big Wednesday was going to be.
Speaker BAnd it's a real phenomenon.
Speaker BIt really is.
Speaker BSo this is going to be shown in two, four episode parts, and as you say, it's the second outing.
Speaker BAnd there's some brilliant names in this and a brilliant script, and it's just one of those things that adults and children alike can watch and enjoy the together.
Speaker BAnd there's a few things that are really brilliant that everybody loves, and this, I strongly believe, is one of them.
Speaker BThis starts with after the holidays, when the children go back to Nevermore Academy.
Speaker BBut it's not just Wednesday going back, because this time her brother Pugsley, played by Isaac Bordenot, is joining the school.
Speaker BIt's a school for supernaturally gifted children.
Speaker BBut her parents are also moving onto campus as well, which, you know, Wednesday is not too pleased about.
Speaker BAnd she's got a kind of unusual relationship with her mother, played by Catherine Zeta Jones, which I think when we left the first series, we thought, you know, things might be a bit better.
Speaker BBut she's come back in the second series as a bit of a celebrity and she doesn't really like it.
Speaker BYou know, everywhere she goes, everyone's coming up to her.
Speaker BShe's a bit of celebrity because of what happened in the first series of her kind of slaying monsters and what have you.
Speaker BAnd very quickly she falls into quite a dark place and it's really, can her grandmother save her and her roomie from something or digging her out of danger, really.
Speaker BAnd her grandmother, Hester Frump, is played by the incredibly brilliant dame, Joanna Lumley.
Speaker BAnd for any of you who have just seen trailers of this before, you actually watch it, she has just been cast so well.
Speaker BI mean, everything she turns a hand to, I'm not a huge fan of hers, everything she turns a hand to is great.
Speaker BBut she's got such a presence, which she, I suppose she does in everything but this.
Speaker BShe really, really does.
Speaker BAnd I just it you won't be disappointed from What I have seen so far, you are not going to be disappointed with this because it's got all the drama and some, it's got the, the deep rooted kind of relationship situation, even though it's supernatural.
Speaker BAnd you know how I feel about Supernatur.
Speaker BDo you know what?
Speaker BI can totally get on board with this one.
Speaker BIt's just, it's fantastic.
Speaker BAnd as I say, it's like, it's a great, a great, great cast as well.
Speaker BWhat do you think?
Speaker AI love it.
Speaker AAnd you're absolutely right.
Speaker AI mean, it's a massive hit for Netflix all over the world.
Speaker AAnd yeah, it is cross generational.
Speaker AAnd Ortega is brilliant in the lead role.
Speaker AIt starts off with her, she's going through airport security and of course the beeper goes off and she just endlessly produces all these weapons she's got on her.
Speaker ASo yeah, she's going back to school this time.
Speaker APugsley, paid by Isaac Ordonez, is joining her there at the school.
Speaker AAnd yeah, Zeta Jones, perfect as Morticia and Luis Gazman as Gomez, her husband is just so creepy.
Speaker AAnd yeah, I mean we got Steve Buscemi, haven't we, as the, the new headmaster.
Speaker AYou've got Billy Piper as the Head of Music.
Speaker ASo many people.
Speaker ALady Gaga's in it.
Speaker AChristopher Lloyd, Thandie Newton, Hayley, Joel Osman.
Speaker AIt never ends.
Speaker ABut because it's Tim Burton, it is just so.
Speaker AThe whole world is so beautifully imagined.
Speaker AI mean, obviously it's based on the Addams Family.
Speaker AYes, but.
Speaker AAnd it's even got.
Speaker AEpisode one has even got a bit of burst and animation in it.
Speaker AStop motion animation, which is just a delight to see.
Speaker ASo yeah, welcome back.
Speaker AIt's just, just as good as ever.
Speaker AWhat, what a delightful and.
Speaker AAnd such an original and imaginative show.
Speaker AA1.
Speaker AWe move across to Disney plus for the return of animated comedy King of the Hill.
Speaker AAnd here's a clip.
Speaker AIt's been hard with you and Peggy gone, Hank.
Speaker AI might have let myself go a little.
Speaker AWorld has changed, Dad.
Speaker AI don't know how to kick someone's ass over zoom.
Speaker BBut I'll figure it out.
Speaker AHuh?
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker AIs that a.
Speaker BDon't worry, they're both all gender.
Speaker AUh huh.
Speaker AAre we all gender?
Speaker AWell, this is one of my all time favorites.
Speaker AIt first aired in 1997 and there were 13 series.
Speaker AIt ended in 2009.
Speaker ASo it's a rather belated return for this Emmy winning show which was created by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels who were behind the brilliant Beavis and Butthead.
Speaker AAnd yes, it's all about The Hill family.
Speaker ASo there's Hank, who sell propane and propane accessories.
Speaker AHe lives in Arlen, Texas with Peggy, his wife and their son Bobby.
Speaker AAnyway, in the interim, it's just so good.
Speaker AIt's just so good in the interim.
Speaker ABobby was at school last time we saw King of the Hill and it's all about them and their neighbors, basically, who are a real bunch of oddballs.
Speaker AAnd Hank sort of stands out in the road, chatting to his mates from the neighborhood who are hilarious.
Speaker AHank and Peggy have been working in Saudi Arabia, would you believe it, building up a nest egg for retirement.
Speaker AMeanwhile, Bobby is.
Speaker AHe's now a sushi chef working in Dallas.
Speaker AI mean, if you've seen this, you'll know what you're going to get.
Speaker AI mean, they're just terrific characters just, you know, living a normal life in Texas.
Speaker AAnd if you haven't seen it, well, you must because it's, it's a joy.
Speaker AIt's so unusual.
Speaker AI don't know, there's.
Speaker AI can't think of anything that's similar.
Speaker ASo, yeah, I'm delighted to see it back.
Speaker AAnd it's just.
Speaker AOh, it's just one of.
Speaker AOne of my faves.
Speaker AI'm so happy.
Speaker AIs this up your alley, Hannah?
Speaker BOh, you know what, I don't remember it before, but I think this is really funny because I just love the kind of.
Speaker BObviously this time has elapsed while, you know, they've been away and just you seeing.
Speaker BBecause obviously progress when you've been out of it, even when you're in it, it's happening quickly, doesn't it?
Speaker BBut you know, suddenly you're out of it and then you come back and it's just that kind of.
Speaker BIt's just very, very funny.
Speaker BThe way he kind of sees things and looks at things and the way that's kind of narrated, works really well and you kind of find yourself really kind of really giggling at it, don't you?
Speaker BThere are some proper laugh out loud moments, I have to say.
Speaker AYeah, he does.
Speaker AHe's struggling to get to grips with the modern world.
Speaker ALike, what in the hell are gender neutral toilets?
Speaker AIt's just, it's good stuff.
Speaker ACheck it out.
Speaker AWell, we got.
Speaker AWe're going to finish with more comedy for you because over on Apple tv Plus we have a second season for platonic.
Speaker AAnd here is the clip.
Speaker BIf we want to stay friends this time, then we're going to have to do normal adult stuff like couples dinners and stuff like that.
Speaker AFine.
Speaker AYeah, couples dinner's on.
Speaker BShe got any Dietary restrictions.
Speaker AShe says she's allergic to gluten, but she's not.
Speaker BWhat am I supposed to do with it?
Speaker ASame thing I do with it.
Speaker ANothing.
Speaker AHow do I get that?
Speaker AI only eat chicken, I only eat pizza.
Speaker BThis is another one.
Speaker BYou know what?
Speaker BI, I was crying with laughter.
Speaker BI, it takes quite a lot to make me cry with laughter, but this really did just tickle my funny bone.
Speaker BSeth Rogen just delivers the best lines.
Speaker BAnyway, so Seth Rogen, if you haven't seen the first season, you don't need to watch it, but you might as well because it's really good.
Speaker BThis is the second outing and there are 10 episodes in this run.
Speaker BAnd so Seth Rogen plays the part of Will and his upcoming marriage is putting.
Speaker BWell, it's causing trouble for his relationship with his best friend who happens to be a woman.
Speaker BAnd I.
Speaker BActually, that doesn't happen that often, does it, where you've got two sort of heterosexual people, just you and I.
Speaker BJust you and I, that's it.
Speaker BWho have really, really good mates and who, you know, confide in absolutely everything and on from the outside looking in absolutely like a couple.
Speaker BBut, but they're not, they're actually just best mates and they have had a rocky period in the past where they didn't speak at all.
Speaker BSo this is kind of them, their friend, their mates again.
Speaker BAnd it's causing all sorts of problems because the woman in his life does not like his relationship with his best pal Sylvia, who's played by the very beautiful Rose Byrne.
Speaker BAnd they've got such a, they've got such a great relationship because Seth Rogen just does really silly things and she just kind of accepts it.
Speaker BShe's in a long term relationship as well.
Speaker BHer partner is completely fine about it.
Speaker BBut in this series he's also having a bit of a midlife crisis, although his midlife crisis does mean that he looks very muscly.
Speaker BSo I'm going with it absolutely fine.
Speaker BSo they, they do really crazy, chaotic things together, but in order for him to get married, he kind of needs to work out a bit more of an adult relationship with her and perhaps be a little bit less silly and make his wife to be, feel less insecure.
Speaker BWell, of course, you know, is he really into her?
Speaker BThat's the other question.
Speaker BYou know, does he really, really want to be with her or not?
Speaker BSo there's that kind of jeopardy there as well.
Speaker BBut it's, it's a lovely tale and it's just, there's some real kind of slapstick humor in There.
Speaker BAnd some.
Speaker BIt's a lot of screeching.
Speaker BAnd there's one bit I actually think this, this.
Speaker BI think this might even be in the trailer.
Speaker BBut it is particularly funny when he swings the golf club and he hits the ball and it hits his father in law to be right in the eye.
Speaker BAnd I just.
Speaker BI don't know why that's so funny, but it is just so funny.
Speaker BAnd they're like crying for help and they've got the golf buggy.
Speaker BI mean, it's a bit gruesome actually, blood everywhere.
Speaker BBut it's just.
Speaker BIt's just very, very funny.
Speaker BBut it does have jeopardy.
Speaker BIt does have real relationships and it's.
Speaker BYeah, it's good fun.
Speaker BReally like it.
Speaker BWhat do you think, Ian?
Speaker AIt is superb, I must say.
Speaker AAnd kind of Rogan's having a bit of a moment, isn't he?
Speaker ALike he starred in the studio.
Speaker AI mean, he'd written loads of stuff as well.
Speaker AHe's great in this.
Speaker AHe wears some hilarious outfits in this, I must say.
Speaker ABut he has always specialized in sort of playing a bit of a man child who refuses to grow up.
Speaker AAnd in some ways Will is sort of trying to grow up here.
Speaker AAnd he is engaged to this very wealthy businesswoman, Jenna, played by Rachel Rosenbloom.
Speaker ABut of course he's having last minute doubts and, you know, When Harry Met Sally kind of posed the question, the Nora Ephron film posed the question, can men and women be platonic friends?
Speaker ABut kind of on the basis that, no, there has to be an attraction there.
Speaker AAnd of course they end up sleeping together, don't they?
Speaker AThat's not the premise in this.
Speaker AThey just are platonic friends.
Speaker AYou're not thinking, oh, are they going to get together?
Speaker ABut yeah.
Speaker ASo she organizes the engagement party in episode one, which just goes hilariously wrong.
Speaker AAnd I don't want to say too much about it, but they, they run out of champagne so they have to team up and go and try and buy some more.
Speaker ABut he keeps calling it Vuvre Cliquot, which is so.
Speaker AIt's just so silly, but it's really funny.
Speaker AIt sort of reminds me slightly of the Aussie comedy Colin from Accounts, but it's its own thing and it's just an absolute delight.
Speaker AAnd Rose Byrne, I mean, yes, she's beautiful, isn't she?
Speaker ABut she's so good at comedy.
Speaker AI mean, she was in Bridesmaids, wasn't she, as like the perfect friend to the bride?
Speaker AAnd she was.
Speaker AAnd she's excellent in this.
Speaker AShe really is.
Speaker ASo yeah, I'd not watched season one of this and I absolutely love it.
Speaker AWell, we've got to that time, young Hannah, my lad, where we find out what the hell you've been binge watching.
Speaker AYes.
Speaker BWell, Ian Miguel we have been watching.
Speaker BHe's not that into you on Prime.
Speaker BIt's a good family film.
Speaker BIt's on prime at the moment and it's an all star cast.
Speaker BJennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly, Bradley Cooper and Ben Affleck.
Speaker BThere's not a lot going on, but it's fun, it's easy to watch and we as a family enjoyed it.
Speaker BHow about you?
Speaker AWell, I found quite an interesting film on Netflix called the Lesson which stars Richard E. Grant from With Nail and I, one of my all time fave actors as, yes, a rather unpredictable author who employs a tutor to coach his son into Oxbridge.
Speaker ASo yeah, worth checking out, I think a little bit different.
Speaker AWell, we've just got time to look ahead to next week's offerings.
Speaker ASo what is on the binge watch menu, Hannah?
Speaker BWell, rockumentary becoming Led Zeppelin traces the early years of the 1970s rock titans.
Speaker AAnd oh yes, the Alien franchise comes to the small screen with Alien Earth on Disney plus.
Speaker AI cannot wait.
Speaker ASo we look forward to those and much, much more.
Speaker ABut in the meantime, dear listeners, watch.
