Welcome to Bible Bites.
Speaker 2 00:00:54
I'm your host Randy Black.
Speaker 2 00:00:57
The story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 is a powerful miracle that's recorded in all four Gospels.
Speaker 2 00:01:06
It reflects both Jesus' compassion and his divine provision.
Speaker 2 00:01:12
The event teaches us a very profound set of lessons about faith.
Speaker 2 00:01:18
Generosity and the sufficiency of God's power, even when resources seem limited
Speaker 2 00:01:26
As we look at the different accounts from the Gospels, let's examine what it means to trust in God's provision.
Speaker 2 00:01:36
to serve others with the resources we have and to witness how God multiplies even our smallest contributions.
Speaker 2 00:01:46
As we do each week, let's start out our study of the Scripture with a prayer.
Speaker 2 00:01:53
Heavenly Father,
Speaker 2 00:01:55
We come before you today with grateful hearts, seeking to learn from your word.
Speaker 2 00:02:01
Teach us to trust in your provision and to offer what we have
Speaker 2 00:02:07
Knowing that you can multiply our efforts to bless others.
Speaker 2 00:02:12
Help us to understand the deeper truths of this miracle and apply them to our own lives.
Speaker 2 00:02:20
Open our hearts and minds to receive your message with faith and humility.
Speaker 2 00:02:26
It is in the name of your Son Jesus that we pray.
Speaker 2 00:02:29
Amen.
Speaker 3 00:02:36
Matthew chapter fourteen, verses thirteen through twenty-one
Speaker 3 00:02:41
Now, when Jesus heard about John, he withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by himself.
Speaker 3 00:02:47
And when the people heard about this,
Speaker 3 00:02:49
They followed him on foot from the cities.
Speaker 3 00:02:52
When he came ashore, he saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them, and healed their sick.
Speaker 3 00:02:59
Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, This place is secluded.
Speaker 3 00:03:04
And the hour is already past, so send the crowds away that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.
Speaker 3 00:03:14
But Jesus said to them,
Speaker 3 00:03:15
They do not need to go.
Speaker 3 00:03:17
You give them something to eat.
Speaker 3 00:03:19
They said to him, We have nothing here except five loaves and two fish.
Speaker 3 00:03:26
And he said, Bring them here to me
Speaker 3 00:03:29
And ordering the crowds to set down on the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fish.
Speaker 3 00:03:35
And looking up toward heaven, he blessed the food.
Speaker 3 00:03:39
And breaking the loaves,
Speaker 3 00:03:40
He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
Speaker 3 00:03:46
As they all ate and were satisfied
Speaker 3 00:03:48
And they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets
Speaker 3 00:03:56
There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.
Speaker 3 00:04:05
Mark chapter six, verses thirty through forty-four.
Speaker 3 00:04:10
The apostles
Speaker 3 00:04:11
Gathered together with Jesus, and they reported to him all that they had done and taught.
Speaker 3 00:04:16
And he said to them, Come away by yourselves to a secluded place, and rest a little while.
Speaker 3 00:04:22
For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have
Speaker 3 00:04:26
time to eat.
Speaker 3 00:04:27
And they went away in the boat to a secluded place by themselves.
Speaker 3 00:04:32
But the people saw them leaving, and many recognized them, and they ran there together on foot from all the cities, and
Speaker 3 00:04:41
Got there ahead of them.
Speaker 3 00:04:43
When Jesus went ashore, he saw a large crowd, and he felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.
Speaker 3 00:04:55
And when it was already late, his disciples came up to him and said, This place is secluded, and it is already late
Speaker 3 00:05:02
Send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages, and buy themselves something to eat.
Speaker 3 00:05:10
But he answered them, You give them something to eat.
Speaker 3 00:05:13
And they said to him, Shall we go and spend two hundred denarii on bread and give it to them to eat?
Speaker 3 00:05:20
But he said to them, How many loaves do you have?
Speaker 3 00:05:23
Go look.
Speaker 3 00:05:23
And when they found out they said, Five
Speaker 3 00:05:27
and two fish.
Speaker 3 00:05:28
And he ordered them all to recline by groups on the green grass.
Speaker 3 00:05:33
They reclined in groups of hundreds and fifties
Speaker 3 00:05:37
And he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, he blessed the food and broke the loaves, and he gave them to the disciples again and again to set before them.
Speaker 3 00:05:51
And he divided the two fish among them all.
Speaker 3 00:05:55
And they all ate and were satisfied.
Speaker 3 00:05:58
And they picked up twelve full
Speaker 3 00:06:01
Baskets of the broken pieces of bread and of the fish.
Speaker 3 00:06:05
There were five thousand men who ate the loaves.
Speaker 3 00:06:14
Luke chapter nine verse.
Speaker 3 00:06:19
When the apostles returned, they gave an account to him of all that they had done, and taking them with him, he withdrew privately to a city called Bethesda.
Speaker 3 00:06:29
But the crowds were aware of the city.
Speaker 3 00:06:31
of this and followed him, and he welcomed them and began speaking to them about the kingdom of God and curing those who had need of healing.
Speaker 3 00:06:41
Now the day was ending, and the twelve came up and said to him, Dismiss the crowd, so that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside, and find lodging
Speaker 3 00:06:51
and get something to eat, because here we are in a secluded place.
Speaker 3 00:06:56
But he said to them, You give them something to eat
Speaker 3 00:07:00
But they said, We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people.
Speaker 3 00:07:09
For there were about five thousand men
Speaker 3 00:07:12
But he said to his disciples, have them recline to eat in groups of about fifty each.
Speaker 3 00:07:18
And they did so
Speaker 3 00:07:20
and had them all recline.
Speaker 3 00:07:22
And he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and broke them, and kept giving them to the disciples to set before the crowd.
Speaker 3 00:07:35
And they all ate and were satisfied.
Speaker 3 00:07:38
And the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve baskets full.
Speaker 3 00:07:50
John chapter 6 verses 1 through 15.
Speaker 3 00:07:54
After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, or Tiberius.
Speaker 3 00:08:00
A large crowd was following him because they were watching the signs which he was performing.
Speaker 3 00:08:05
Forming on those who were sick.
Speaker 3 00:08:12
Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.
Speaker 3 00:08:15
So Jesus, after raising his eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to him, said to Philip,
Speaker 3 00:08:21
Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat?
Speaker 3 00:08:25
But he was saying this only to test him, for he himself knew what he intended to do.
Speaker 3 00:08:32
Philip answered him.
Speaker 3 00:08:34
Two hundred denari worth of bread is not enough for them, for each to receive just a little.
Speaker 3 00:08:41
One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him,
Speaker 3 00:08:45
There's a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish.
Speaker 3 00:08:50
But what are these for so many people?
Speaker 3 00:08:54
Jesus said.
Speaker 3 00:08:55
Have the people reclined to eat.
Speaker 3 00:08:57
Now there was plenty of grass in the place.
Speaker 3 00:09:00
So the men reclined, about five thousand in number.
Speaker 3 00:09:04
Jesus then took the loaves.
Speaker 3 00:09:06
And after giving thanks, he distributed them to those who were reclining, likewise also of the fish, as much as they wanted.
Speaker 3 00:09:16
And when they had eaten their fill,
Speaker 3 00:09:18
He said to his disciples, Gather up the leftover pieces so that nothing will be lost.
Speaker 3 00:09:25
So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with pieces from the five barley loaves which were left over by the
Speaker 3 00:09:33
Those who had eaten.
Speaker 3 00:09:35
Therefore, when the people saw the sign which he had performed, they said, This is truly the prophet who has come into the world.
Speaker 3 00:09:44
So Jesus, aware that they intended to come and take him by force to make him.
Speaker 3 00:09:48
king withdrew again to the mountain by himself alone.
Speaker 2 00:09:55
The story begins with Jesus and the disciples seeking rest
Speaker 2 00:10:00
after the disciples return from their missionary journeys.
Speaker 2 00:10:04
However, the crowds follow them, hungry for Jesus' teaching and miracles
Speaker 2 00:10:11
Rather than seeing the people as a burden, Jesus is moved with compassion and begins to teach and heal them
Speaker 2 00:10:19
This reflects his deep care for both their physical and spiritual needs, showing us that ministry often requires sacrifice.
Speaker 2 00:10:31
Even when we feel the need for rest.
Speaker 2 00:10:35
In John's account, Jesus asks Philip how they can feed such a large crowd, testing him.
Speaker 2 00:10:43
Philip focuses on the difficulty while Andrew brings a young boy's offering of five loaves and two fish.
Speaker 2 00:10:53
An amount that seems extremely insufficient.
Speaker 2 00:10:58
This contrast highlights how our limited human perspective
Speaker 2 00:11:04
often overlooks God's ability to work through the small things.
Speaker 2 00:11:09
Jesus' acknowledgement of the boy's offering encourages us to bring what we have to God, no matter how inadequate
Speaker 2 00:11:17
it may seem.
Speaker 2 00:11:20
After instructing the crowd to set, Jesus blesses the food, breaks it, and gives it to the disciples to distribute
Speaker 2 00:11:29
Miraculously, the food multiplies, and everyone eats until they are satisfied.
Speaker 2 00:11:35
The fact that Jesus involves the disciples in distributing the food
Speaker 2 00:11:40
shows that God works through people to bless others, emphasizing our role as his servants.
Speaker 2 00:11:49
At the end of the meal, Jesus instructs the disciples to gather the leftover pieces, and twelve baskets are filled with the remains.
Speaker 2 00:12:00
This act of collecting the excess demonstrates God's care and the importance of stewardship.
Speaker 2 00:12:08
Nothing should be wasted.
Speaker 2 00:12:11
Even in moments of abundance, we are called to handle resources with care, ensuring they serve God's purpose
Speaker 2 00:12:20
Finally, the crowd, amazed by the miracle, desires to make Jesus their king by force.
Speaker 2 00:12:29
However
Speaker 2 00:12:31
Jesus withdraws, knowing their intentions are misplaced.
Speaker 2 00:12:36
This response teaches us that God's kingdom is spiritual
Speaker 2 00:12:41
not earthly, and that we must align our desires with His will.
Speaker 2 00:12:47
Rather than forcing our expectations on God, we should seek to understand and follow His greater plan.
Speaker 2 00:12:57
We have some key takeaways from these scriptures.
Speaker 2 00:13:01
The first is that God's provision is sufficient even when resources appear limited.
Speaker 2 00:13:08
The feeding of the 5,000 demonstrates that no situation is too overwhelming for God
Speaker 2 00:13:16
Even when the disciples saw only scarcity, Jesus revealed that God's provision is not bound by human limitations.
Speaker 2 00:13:24
This reminds us that we should trust Him with our needs.
Speaker 2 00:13:29
Believing that he can provide in ways that we cannot see.
Speaker 2 00:13:34
When we offer what little we have to him, he can multiply it beyond our expectations.
Speaker 2 00:13:41
God's sufficiency invites us to live with faith rather than fear, no matter how small our resources may seem
Speaker 2 00:13:53
Our next takeaway is that Jesus shows compassion for both physical and spiritual needs
Speaker 2 00:14:01
Throughout the story, Jesus meets the crowd's immediate hunger while also teaching and healing them.
Speaker 2 00:14:10
This reflects his care for the whole person, both body and soul.
Speaker 2 00:14:16
His willingness to serve, even when he was seeking rest, reveals that love
Speaker 2 00:14:22
Sometimes requires us to place others' needs above our own desires.
Speaker 2 00:14:28
As followers of Christ, we are called to model this same compassion
Speaker 2 00:14:34
recognizing that ministry often involves meeting both practical and spiritual needs.
Speaker 2 00:14:40
Jesus's actions encourage us to serve others with love, patience, and empathy
Speaker 2 00:14:47
Even when it is not convenient.
Speaker 2 00:14:50
Our third takeaway is that God multiplies small offerings for a greater impact.
Speaker 2 00:14:59
The boys' five loaves and two fish seemed insignificant compared to the size of the crowd.
Speaker 2 00:15:06
Yet
Speaker 2 00:15:07
In Jesus' hands, they became more than enough.
Speaker 2 00:15:12
This teaches us that God often uses small, humble offerings to accomplish great things
Speaker 2 00:15:19
Our talents, time, and resources may feel limited, but they have the potential for profound impact when surrendered to God.
Speaker 2 00:15:30
The key is not the size of the gift, but the faith with which it is given.
Speaker 2 00:15:37
This challenges us
Speaker 2 00:15:39
to offer what we have to God, knowing that he delights in using the small to create the miraculous
Speaker 2 00:15:49
Our fourth takeaway is that stewardship is essential even in abundance.
Speaker 2 00:15:57
After everyone ate and was satisfied, Jesus instructed the disciples to gather the leftovers so nothing would be wasted.
Speaker 2 00:16:07
This act emphasizes the importance of careful management of God's blessings, teaching us that even in times of abundance we are called to be good stewards.
Speaker 2 00:16:19
God's gifts, whether material or spiritual, are not to be squandered, but used wisely for his purposes
Speaker 2 00:16:29
Proper stewardship shows gratitude and respect for the provision we receive, and it ensures that resources are available to bless others
Speaker 2 00:16:42
This challenges us to reflect on how we are managing the blessings God has entrusted to us.
Speaker 2 00:16:51
And our last takeaway is that God's kingdom is spiritual, not earthly.
Speaker 2 00:16:57
The crowd wanted to make Jesus their king to meet their political and physical needs, but he withdrew.
Speaker 2 00:17:05
knowing their intentions were misguided.
Speaker 2 00:17:08
This reveals that God's plan is often different from what we expect, focusing on spiritual renewal rather than earthly power.
Speaker 2 00:17:19
It teaches us to align our desires with God's purposes instead of trying to force our own agendas onto Him
Speaker 2 00:17:29
This story, this scripture invites us to seek his kingdom above all else, trusting that his ways
Speaker 2 00:17:38
are higher than ours.
Speaker 2 00:17:40
It challenges us to submit our will to God, even when his plan doesn't align with our personal expectations.
Speaker 2 00:17:54
This miracle challenges us to trust in God's provision even when resources seem limited
Speaker 2 00:18:02
Like the disciples, we often feel overwhelmed by the demands placed on us, but the story reminds us that God can multiply even the smallest offerings when they are placed in his hands.
Speaker 2 00:18:15
It prompts us to consider areas in our lives where we may be relying too much on our own strength rather than trusting in his sufficiency
Speaker 2 00:18:28
Jesus' response to the crowd's needs also teach us the value of compassion and ministry
Speaker 2 00:18:35
Even though he and the disciples sought rest, he did not turn the people away, but lovingly served them
Speaker 2 00:18:43
This encourages us to develop a heart that is willing to serve others, even when it may not be convenient.
Speaker 2 00:18:52
It's an invitation to see interruptions, not as burdens.
Speaker 2 00:18:57
but as opportunities to reflect God's love.
Speaker 2 00:19:01
The boy's offering of five loaves and two fish serves as a reminder that God can use whatever we offer.
Speaker 2 00:19:10
no matter how small it may seem.
Speaker 2 00:19:13
Often we hesitate to contribute because we feel that we have, or that what we have, is not enough.
Speaker 2 00:19:22
The scriptures invites us to surrender what we have, our time, our talents, our resources, and trust God to multiply them for his glory.
Speaker 2 00:19:36
Another key lesson from these scriptures lies in the collection of the leftovers.
Speaker 2 00:19:43
Even in moments of abundance, Jesus teaches the importance of stewardship
Speaker 2 00:19:48
We're reminded to carefully manage the blessings we receive, ensuring that they are used wisely and are not wasted.
Speaker 2 00:19:56
This reflection encourages encourages us to take inventory of both material and spiritual blessings.
Speaker 2 00:20:06
Asking whether we are using them effectively for God's purpose.
Speaker 2 00:20:11
Finally, the crowd's desire to make Jesus a political king highlights how easy it is
Speaker 2 00:20:19
To misinterpret God's work.
Speaker 2 00:20:23
The people salt earthly solutions to their problems
Speaker 2 00:20:27
But Jesus' withdrawal reminds us that his mission was spiritual.
Speaker 2 00:20:33
This point of reflection urges us to align our desires with God's will.
Speaker 2 00:20:39
seeking his kingdom rather than our own agendas.
Speaker 2 00:20:43
It challenges us to trust his plan, even when it doesn't align with our own expectations.
Speaker 2 00:20:54
Let's close out our study of the Scripture with a prayer.
Speaker 2 00:20:58
Gracious Heavenly Father, we thank you for the lessons that we have learned from your word today.
Speaker 2 00:21:04
Help us to trust in your provision.
Speaker 2 00:21:07
Even when our resources seem small, teach us to serve others with compassion.
Speaker 2 00:21:15
And to offer in our time, our talents, and our treasures for your glory.
Speaker 2 00:21:22
Guide us to be good stewards of all that you have given us
Speaker 2 00:21:27
And may our lives reflect your love and power to those around us.
Speaker 2 00:21:33
Align our desires with your will and help us to live for your kingdom rather
Speaker 2 00:21:41
Than for our own ambitions.
Speaker 2 00:21:44
In your Son Jesus' name we pray.
Speaker 2 00:21:47
Amen.

This podcast operates under the value for value model.
Speaker 2 00:22:13
We don't take advertising money from anyone.
Speaker 2 00:22:15
We don't want someone or to feel like someone might have the influence.
Speaker 2 00:22:19
the from the outside to push a message or or or what we're doing in a certain way.
Speaker 2 00:22:24
So what we do is we per are working hard to provide value to you through the development of these lessons

Speaker 2 00:22:41
And that can come in one of three forms as part of this value for value model.
Speaker 2 00:22:45
That includes time, talent, or treasure.
Speaker 2 00:22:49
Time is simply taking the time to listen to the show and even taking time to share it with others.
Speaker 2 00:22:55
Talent would be offering to create cover art for an episode or help us with the idea of a topic and developing it and pulling the scripture together to do so.
Speaker 2 00:23:06
It could also be even volunteering to write an entire lesson or episode for the show or even record as part of the show.
Speaker 2 00:23:15
And treasure, of course, by its name is a financial means.

exhausted most of their leave.
Speaker 2 00:26:12
She's has to go and travel for treatment and actually stay at the hospital um about three hours away from where they live.
Speaker 2 00:26:19
So if you can lift her up
Speaker 2 00:26:21
um in prayer that the Lord may touch her.
Speaker 2 00:26:25
Not sure of her status with God in her life.
Speaker 2 00:26:29
So let's hope that the healing takes place.
Speaker 2 00:26:32
But more importantly if
Speaker 2 00:26:33
If she's not saved, that God may stir her heart and bring that about for her.
Speaker 2 00:26:42
Let's close out this episode with another prayer
Speaker 2 00:26:47
Heavenly Father, again we thank you for this amazing and powerful opportunity to gather together and share and learn from your word.
Speaker 2 00:26:59
We lift up these requests, Greg, my dad, Melanie, myself, so that you can address those needs and have it meet your will in each of those lives.
Speaker 2 00:27:12
We also lift up the unspoken requests that members of our audience may have that they have not shared with us, but they do have requests that they want you to address in some way.
Speaker 2 00:27:24
We know that you are the one who holds the answers to our prayers.
Speaker 2 00:27:29
And we trust in you and your wisdom in meeting those requests in a way that advances your will.
Speaker 2 00:27:37
It's in your name that we work each week to share you with the world through this podcast.
Speaker 2 00:27:45
And we hope that someone who may not have already done so will accept your Son Jesus as their Savior, and they will then be able to spend eternity in heaven with you and Jesus and all of us who are saved.
Speaker 2 00:27:59
In Jesus' name we pray.
Speaker 2 00:28:02
Amen.
Speaker 2 00:28:04
Our next episode is going to look at the miracle of Jesus walking on the water.
Speaker 2 00:28:09
And you can find that in three locations in the Bible.
Speaker 2 00:28:13

Speaker 2 00:28:19

Speaker 2 00:28:26
And then John chapter 6, verses 16 through 21.
