Jessica Frankus

Hello, and welcome to a special episode of the Elevated Edit podcast.

Jessica Frankus

I have a special guest with me today.

Guest Speaker

My name is Jessica Frankus.

Jessica Frankus

Sorry.

Jessica Frankus

We've been traveling for how many days now?

Guest Speaker

I guess we have about three, so about 12 day 12 or 13 day.

Jessica Frankus

12 in Europe, and that is actually what this episode is about.

Jessica Frankus

So.

Jessica Frankus

So we're gonna do an episode for each country, and we're gonna start with Amsterdam.

Jessica Frankus

That was the first country that we visited.

Jessica Frankus

And we're gonna talk about what we expected, what actually happened, and what we would do differently and just different things that we liked about each country.

Jessica Frankus

So we're gonna start with Amsterdam.

Jessica Frankus

Amsterdam was rough on us.

Guest Speaker

It was pretty rough physically.

Jessica Frankus

First, let's talk about the flight first, what we were expecting and what was okay.

Guest Speaker

I mean, the flight to me was not bad.

Guest Speaker

Yeah, it was kind of an overnight flight for us, but I was able to sleep quite a bit.

Jessica Frankus

We were definitely.

Jessica Frankus

We can't afford first class internationally yet, but if you can, I would say internationally would definitely be worth it.

Guest Speaker

I would say if eight hours or more definitely need.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah, like, more room.

Jessica Frankus

I was starting to get a little antsy towards the end because, like, my legs were hurting and you couldn't really spread out at all.

Jessica Frankus

But they served us food on the plane.

Jessica Frankus

I thought it was great.

Guest Speaker

They served us, I guess with our time difference.

Guest Speaker

They served us dinner, and then they served us breakfast.

Jessica Frankus

But overall, overall, it was great.

Jessica Frankus

The big plane was great.

Jessica Frankus

There wasn't any turbulence, really.

Jessica Frankus

Overall, it.

Jessica Frankus

It.

Jessica Frankus

The flight went way better than I expected.

Guest Speaker

Yeah.

Jessica Frankus

And then we got to Amsterdam and we struggled a little bit with transportation.

Jessica Frankus

That is one thing that I would recommend is don't try to figure out the transportation when you first get there and you have all your luggage with you.

Jessica Frankus

Like, spring for an Uber.

Jessica Frankus

Just.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah, go ahead and pay extra.

Jessica Frankus

Get an Uber, get situated, and then try to figure out the Metro and stuff.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah.

Guest Speaker

And usually the airport is far away from where either the center of town or, you know, where your hotel is.

Guest Speaker

Yeah, just.

Guest Speaker

We have a check in.

Jessica Frankus

Oh, yeah, we had a train.

Jessica Frankus

We struggled at first because our bags are way too freaking Heavy.

Jessica Frankus

We couldn't get them on the train.

Jessica Frankus

Luckily this guy helped us because the conductor was blowing his whistle at us and it was.

Jessica Frankus

It was really stressful.

Jessica Frankus

But anyway, we eventually got to our hotel.

Jessica Frankus

Our hotel in Amsterdam was fantastic.

Jessica Frankus

It was in a great location, I thought.

Guest Speaker

Yeah.

Guest Speaker

Yeah, it's pretty much in the center of town.

Jessica Frankus

Amsterdam was great.

Jessica Frankus

I was expecting it.

Jessica Frankus

It was about what I expected to be.

Jessica Frankus

Honestly.

Jessica Frankus

I thought so, too.

Guest Speaker

Definitely a lot more bikes than I thought.

Guest Speaker

I've always heard it's the city of bikes.

Guest Speaker

And I knew there would be a lot of bikes, but, I mean, there are a lot of bikes.

Guest Speaker

But we were able to walk everywhere.

Guest Speaker

Pretty much.

Guest Speaker

You could take the metro.

Guest Speaker

It's.

Guest Speaker

It's.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah, it was a very walkable town.

Jessica Frankus

Like I would say, I think in Amsterdam we visited like all the places that I wanted to visit there and we were able to walk everywhere.

Jessica Frankus

Like, we only we didn't get on.

Jessica Frankus

Was there a metro?

Jessica Frankus

There's just a bus and a train.

Guest Speaker

The metro was like.

Guest Speaker

It was on the street, but it was a subway.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah.

Jessica Frankus

But I'd say we got on, what, twice?

Guest Speaker

Yeah, we pretty much walked over.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah.

Jessica Frankus

Now we did get sick.

Jessica Frankus

Both of us got sick.

Guest Speaker

He did get sick.

Jessica Frankus

I had just like a sinus.

Jessica Frankus

My throat was killing me.

Jessica Frankus

Jess.

Jessica Frankus

I didn't realize she was as sick as she was.

Jessica Frankus

I would probably would have stressed out if I'd have known.

Guest Speaker

Yeah, I thought I had a stomach ulcer at one point.

Guest Speaker

I had such bad indigestion.

Guest Speaker

And I don't know if that was from something we ate or maybe the amount of alcohol.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah.

Guest Speaker

The day before, it just would jet lag and everything else.

Guest Speaker

But went to the pharmacy and got some medicine and I was.

Guest Speaker

I was okay the day after.

Guest Speaker

But yeah, easy.

Guest Speaker

Didn't help that the last meal I ate before I got really sick was eel.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah, pretty much raw eel.

Guest Speaker

So that was all I could taste.

Jessica Frankus

And think of that day was a.

Jessica Frankus

So we booked a day trip.

Jessica Frankus

What was that town called that we went to?

Guest Speaker

Zan.

Guest Speaker

Zan.

Jessica Frankus

Hold on, we're looking it up.

Jessica Frankus

N S.

Jessica Frankus

And then was it S, C, H, A, N, S, however you pronounce that, the we.

Jessica Frankus

So we booked it through, like a company.

Jessica Frankus

And our guide was Sam.

Jessica Frankus

And he was absolutely fantastic.

Jessica Frankus

He picked us up in this really nice van, like drove us out to the countryside and we basically spent the majority of the day with him.

Jessica Frankus

I think he picked us up at what, like nine?

Jessica Frankus

And he dropped us off at 2:30ish.

Guest Speaker

Yeah.

Guest Speaker

And it Was great.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah, I would highly recommend that.

Jessica Frankus

Fantastic.

Jessica Frankus

We went and saw windmills.

Jessica Frankus

We went to the church cheese factory.

Jessica Frankus

He took us to lunch.

Jessica Frankus

He took us to this little, like, seaside town thing, and we got to do some shopping and stuff.

Jessica Frankus

I kind of felt bad that we both felt so bad because I think we were, like, low energy.

Jessica Frankus

Like, we fell asleep on the way back.

Guest Speaker

I feel like I asked him a lot of questions on the way there.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah, he was super informative.

Jessica Frankus

Like, he was very entertaining.

Jessica Frankus

And I thought.

Jessica Frankus

I thought I learned a lot about Amsterdam from him that, like, I probably wouldn't have learned otherwise.

Jessica Frankus

Okay, so we talked about what else in Amsterdam.

Jessica Frankus

Did we.

Guest Speaker

Fun fact about Amsterdam.

Guest Speaker

Their king really has no power in their government, but makes about 10 million a year and does not pay.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah, I forgot about that.

Guest Speaker

Yeah, I thought that was pretty.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah, that was another fun fact that we learned from Sam.

Jessica Frankus

The weather.

Jessica Frankus

I thought it was a little chilly.

Jessica Frankus

It was a little.

Jessica Frankus

I was expecting it to be a lot rainier, but it wasn't all that bad.

Jessica Frankus

It sprinkled a little bit and then it rained for, like, hard for, like, maybe an hour that one day.

Jessica Frankus

But that was really about it.

Guest Speaker

So, yeah, it was super nice.

Jessica Frankus

Everybody was super nice.

Jessica Frankus

I didn't think the language barrier was that bad.

Jessica Frankus

Everybody, like, as long as you made an effort.

Jessica Frankus

I thought everybody was very accommodating, very polite.

Jessica Frankus

I don't think their manners were, like.

Jessica Frankus

They weren't like, over the top bubbly.

Jessica Frankus

Like, we definitely kind of stood out as Americans in that sense.

Jessica Frankus

But they were very nice, very polite.

Guest Speaker

For sure.

Jessica Frankus

For sure.

Jessica Frankus

Trying to think of what else stood out in Amsterdam.

Guest Speaker

Just giving some information here on our stay if you are planning to go to Amsterdam.

Guest Speaker

Our hotel was called the NH Collection in the Flower Market district.

Jessica Frankus

So, yeah, and it was a great hotel.

Jessica Frankus

Like, it was very walkable.

Jessica Frankus

I felt super safe.

Jessica Frankus

Like, when Jess wasn't feeling good, I went and ate dinner by myself one night and I didn't feel uncomfortable at all.

Jessica Frankus

You've got to get a.

Jessica Frankus

Oh, let's talk about food.

Jessica Frankus

We didn't.

Jessica Frankus

We haven't talked about food yet.

Jessica Frankus

The Stroop waffles.

Jessica Frankus

We got one of those.

Jessica Frankus

Jess liked it.

Jessica Frankus

It was a little too sweet for me.

Guest Speaker

Yeah.

Jessica Frankus

Ole Bowlin.

Guest Speaker

I wanted the olive, which is like a donut, essentially their type of donut.

Guest Speaker

But I wanted one from one of the street vendors and we ended up not being able to find it.

Guest Speaker

I think it was too late in the day at that point.

Guest Speaker

It was like the last day.

Guest Speaker

Another Thing is the bitter ballin.

Jessica Frankus

It's like.

Guest Speaker

I almost want to describe it as like a boudin ball.

Guest Speaker

That's not that.

Guest Speaker

It's just like fry.

Guest Speaker

It's like a meat inside, but it's a fried ball.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah.

Jessica Frankus

And they have different ones, too.

Guest Speaker

Yeah, they have different ones, but that was really good.

Guest Speaker

We tried that the first day.

Jessica Frankus

What else did we eat?

Guest Speaker

You got that cookie croissant.

Jessica Frankus

Oh, yeah.

Jessica Frankus

A crookie.

Jessica Frankus

A crookie.

Jessica Frankus

That was really good.

Jessica Frankus

It was from Lorenz or Lauren's.

Jessica Frankus

I want to say it's like.

Jessica Frankus

It's all over TikTok.

Jessica Frankus

You can look it up.

Jessica Frankus

But that was.

Jessica Frankus

If you like croissants, you'd really like that.

Jessica Frankus

Jess doesn't really like croissants, but I loved it.

Jessica Frankus

It literally is like a big fat croissant and it's got three chocolate chip cookies cooked into it.

Jessica Frankus

Like it's.

Jessica Frankus

It's a fat treat, but it's so good.

Guest Speaker

Some other aesthetically pleasing places.

Guest Speaker

We ate the Siren.

Guest Speaker

It was more maybe like fish and.

Jessica Frankus

Yep.

Guest Speaker

Kind of Mediterranean vibe.

Jessica Frankus

Very fresh, very good.

Guest Speaker

The Secret Garden.

Guest Speaker

Very aesthetically pleasing.

Guest Speaker

Cute place.

Guest Speaker

We got some really good.

Guest Speaker

Did we get sea bass there?

Jessica Frankus

We did.

Jessica Frankus

And then we had.

Jessica Frankus

What was that thing wrapped in avocado?

Jessica Frankus

Oh, yeah, it was sauce on it.

Jessica Frankus

It was probably the best thing I've ever eaten.

Guest Speaker

Yeah, that was really good.

Guest Speaker

So again, maybe kind of similar vibes, but it was really cute.

Guest Speaker

And then we sat at their bar after, enjoyed a little bit and they.

Jessica Frankus

Had drinks, and then we should have stopped, and then we didn't.

Jessica Frankus

But hey, you know what?

Jessica Frankus

We had fun.

Guest Speaker

I got sick after that.

Guest Speaker

But that's okay.

Jessica Frankus

It's okay.

Jessica Frankus

We had fun.

Jessica Frankus

That's what you're supposed to do in a foreign country.

Jessica Frankus

Right?

Jessica Frankus

Oh, and then the Sea Palace.

Guest Speaker

Oh, my gosh.

Guest Speaker

That was a big Chinese place.

Jessica Frankus

So we didn't even plan to go to the Sea Palace.

Jessica Frankus

We were actually walking to another place and then.

Jessica Frankus

But the Sea palace is, like, on the water.

Jessica Frankus

And what did that.

Jessica Frankus

What did that tour guide say about the Sea palace then when they built it?

Jessica Frankus

Because it's like a.

Guest Speaker

It sank.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah.

Jessica Frankus

Because they originally had the same design as in Japan or in China.

Jessica Frankus

And the people in.

Jessica Frankus

Well, just.

Jessica Frankus

I want to.

Jessica Frankus

I want to say it's China.

Jessica Frankus

The people in China are so much smaller than the people in the Netherlands were.

Jessica Frankus

And they built it structurally to hold people in China.

Jessica Frankus

And the people in the Netherlands were so big, they literally sunk the building the first day that they opened.

Jessica Frankus

But they Rebuilt it.

Jessica Frankus

And so anyway, we went in there and it was.

Guest Speaker

So it's probably been one of my top favorite meals.

Jessica Frankus

Good.

Jessica Frankus

There were these noodles that we ordered, and they were like, thick, fat, soft, like egg noodles.

Jessica Frankus

It was so good.

Guest Speaker

And it's on the river, so it's really pretty.

Jessica Frankus

That was delicious.

Guest Speaker

It kind of reminds me of a casino boat.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah.

Guest Speaker

But it's really pretty inside.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah, it was so good.

Jessica Frankus

That was.

Jessica Frankus

That's.

Jessica Frankus

That was honestly probably one of my favorite places we've eaten.

Guest Speaker

And then there's this other place called Adam.

Jessica Frankus

Adam A.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah, the tower.

Guest Speaker

Like this.

Guest Speaker

It's where they have those swings on top of this huge tower.

Guest Speaker

And you could do the swings.

Guest Speaker

We did not do the swings.

Guest Speaker

We just went.

Guest Speaker

Ate dinner up there and did the lookout.

Guest Speaker

Dinner was not worth.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah, the food was all right.

Jessica Frankus

The food was giving Applebee's.

Jessica Frankus

I thought, like, it was kind of like Amsterdam's version of Applebee's.

Guest Speaker

Yeah, it's.

Guest Speaker

It's.

Jessica Frankus

The food was all right.

Jessica Frankus

Nothing to write home about.

Jessica Frankus

There's.

Jessica Frankus

I would go to the tower, but I would eat dinner somewhere else.

Guest Speaker

Yeah.

Jessica Frankus

What else?

Jessica Frankus

There's lots of canals everywhere, lots of flowers.

Jessica Frankus

It's very beautiful.

Guest Speaker

I know what you're asking.

Guest Speaker

Did we go to the red light district?

Guest Speaker

Yes, we did.

Jessica Frankus

Yes, we did.

Jessica Frankus

Twice.

Jessica Frankus

It's.

Jessica Frankus

It honestly wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Guest Speaker

What do you mean bad?

Jessica Frankus

Like, I don't know.

Jessica Frankus

I just kind of figured the red light district was going to be a little unsafe.

Jessica Frankus

And it wasn't.

Guest Speaker

Yeah.

Jessica Frankus

Nobody was really.

Jessica Frankus

Nobody cared about us as we were walking.

Jessica Frankus

Also.

Guest Speaker

Were there pretty early.

Jessica Frankus

We were there very early.

Jessica Frankus

So that is one thing we've learned in Europe is that they don't get started.

Jessica Frankus

Like, they don't crank things up until like, 8:30.

Guest Speaker

No.

Jessica Frankus

And we were there.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah, we were there at, like.

Jessica Frankus

We literally were, like, trying to hang out until the sun went down.

Guest Speaker

Do not even open until like, 7.

Guest Speaker

7:30.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah.

Guest Speaker

Like, do not open their doors.

Jessica Frankus

Like, we've made reservations thinking that we, like, got in, like, in hot places.

Jessica Frankus

You're like, oh, we got a 7:30 reservation.

Guest Speaker

That's literally the first.

Jessica Frankus

And you're, like, the only person sitting there.

Jessica Frankus

And it's like, oh, that's why we got a reservation, because we're freaking losers.

Jessica Frankus

This only time we could get in here.

Jessica Frankus

Let's see what else about Amsterdam?

Jessica Frankus

I think that was really.

Jessica Frankus

It.

Jessica Frankus

It was great.

Guest Speaker

It was really cute.

Jessica Frankus

Super cute.

Guest Speaker

Really welcoming.

Jessica Frankus

Very welcoming.

Jessica Frankus

I would bring kids there There were a lot of kids.

Jessica Frankus

There were a lot of kids really safe.

Guest Speaker

Like, I would have gone there alone and for sure.

Jessica Frankus

And I.

Jessica Frankus

I would like, if I ever.

Jessica Frankus

For y'all listening, don't be like, oh, I think she's gonna have a kid now.

Jessica Frankus

Maybe not.

Jessica Frankus

But if I ever did have kids, I would want to take them to Amsterdam so that they could see how independent the Dutch children were.

Jessica Frankus

Because, like, the kids were just running around by themselves.

Jessica Frankus

Like they were crossing the street and going to school, riding their bikes all over town.

Jessica Frankus

Like, it was a very, like, community oriented, very independent minded community.

Jessica Frankus

So I would definitely want my kids to experience that.

Guest Speaker

And I did.

Guest Speaker

I did get a bike and ride it around.

Jessica Frankus

She did.

Guest Speaker

Blakely knew her limits.

Jessica Frankus

She did not.

Guest Speaker

And we will talk about that.

Jessica Frankus

We'll talk about.

Jessica Frankus

We'll talk about my limits when it comes to bikes in the next episode.

Jessica Frankus

Because I think Jessica doubted me for a second and then she learned real quick, oh, Blakely really does not know how to ride a bike.

Jessica Frankus

She wasn't just making it up.

Jessica Frankus

Yeah, that's.

Jessica Frankus

That's a conversation for the next episode.

Jessica Frankus

Okay, I think we've rambled on about Amsterdam enough.

Jessica Frankus

I highly recommend it.

Jessica Frankus
