Jessica FrankusHello, and welcome to a special episode of the Elevated Edit podcast.
Jessica FrankusI have a special guest with me today.
Guest SpeakerMy name is Jessica Frankus.
Jessica FrankusSorry.
Jessica FrankusWe've been traveling for how many days now?
Guest SpeakerI guess we have about three, so about 12 day 12 or 13 day.
Jessica Frankus12 in Europe, and that is actually what this episode is about.
Jessica FrankusSo.
Jessica FrankusSo we're gonna do an episode for each country, and we're gonna start with Amsterdam.
Jessica FrankusThat was the first country that we visited.
Jessica FrankusAnd we're gonna talk about what we expected, what actually happened, and what we would do differently and just different things that we liked about each country.
Jessica FrankusSo we're gonna start with Amsterdam.
Jessica FrankusAmsterdam was rough on us.
Guest SpeakerIt was pretty rough physically.
Jessica FrankusFirst, let's talk about the flight first, what we were expecting and what was okay.
Guest SpeakerI mean, the flight to me was not bad.
Guest SpeakerYeah, it was kind of an overnight flight for us, but I was able to sleep quite a bit.
Jessica FrankusWe were definitely.
Jessica FrankusWe can't afford first class internationally yet, but if you can, I would say internationally would definitely be worth it.
Guest SpeakerI would say if eight hours or more definitely need.
Jessica FrankusYeah, like, more room.
Jessica FrankusI was starting to get a little antsy towards the end because, like, my legs were hurting and you couldn't really spread out at all.
Jessica FrankusBut they served us food on the plane.
Jessica FrankusI thought it was great.
Guest SpeakerThey served us, I guess with our time difference.
Guest SpeakerThey served us dinner, and then they served us breakfast.
Jessica FrankusBut overall, overall, it was great.
Jessica FrankusThe big plane was great.
Jessica FrankusThere wasn't any turbulence, really.
Jessica FrankusOverall, it.
Jessica FrankusIt.
Jessica FrankusThe flight went way better than I expected.
Guest SpeakerYeah.
Jessica FrankusAnd then we got to Amsterdam and we struggled a little bit with transportation.
Jessica FrankusThat is one thing that I would recommend is don't try to figure out the transportation when you first get there and you have all your luggage with you.
Jessica FrankusLike, spring for an Uber.
Jessica FrankusJust.
Jessica FrankusYeah, go ahead and pay extra.
Jessica FrankusGet an Uber, get situated, and then try to figure out the Metro and stuff.
Jessica FrankusYeah.
Guest SpeakerAnd usually the airport is far away from where either the center of town or, you know, where your hotel is.
Guest SpeakerYeah, just.
Guest SpeakerWe have a check in.
Jessica FrankusOh, yeah, we had a train.
Jessica FrankusWe struggled at first because our bags are way too freaking Heavy.
Jessica FrankusWe couldn't get them on the train.
Jessica FrankusLuckily this guy helped us because the conductor was blowing his whistle at us and it was.
Jessica FrankusIt was really stressful.
Jessica FrankusBut anyway, we eventually got to our hotel.
Jessica FrankusOur hotel in Amsterdam was fantastic.
Jessica FrankusIt was in a great location, I thought.
Guest SpeakerYeah.
Guest SpeakerYeah, it's pretty much in the center of town.
Jessica FrankusAmsterdam was great.
Jessica FrankusI was expecting it.
Jessica FrankusIt was about what I expected to be.
Jessica FrankusHonestly.
Jessica FrankusI thought so, too.
Guest SpeakerDefinitely a lot more bikes than I thought.
Guest SpeakerI've always heard it's the city of bikes.
Guest SpeakerAnd I knew there would be a lot of bikes, but, I mean, there are a lot of bikes.
Guest SpeakerBut we were able to walk everywhere.
Guest SpeakerPretty much.
Guest SpeakerYou could take the metro.
Guest SpeakerIt's.
Guest SpeakerIt's.
Jessica FrankusYeah, it was a very walkable town.
Jessica FrankusLike I would say, I think in Amsterdam we visited like all the places that I wanted to visit there and we were able to walk everywhere.
Jessica FrankusLike, we only we didn't get on.
Jessica FrankusWas there a metro?
Jessica FrankusThere's just a bus and a train.
Guest SpeakerThe metro was like.
Guest SpeakerIt was on the street, but it was a subway.
Jessica FrankusYeah.
Jessica FrankusBut I'd say we got on, what, twice?
Guest SpeakerYeah, we pretty much walked over.
Jessica FrankusYeah.
Jessica FrankusNow we did get sick.
Jessica FrankusBoth of us got sick.
Guest SpeakerHe did get sick.
Jessica FrankusI had just like a sinus.
Jessica FrankusMy throat was killing me.
Jessica FrankusJess.
Jessica FrankusI didn't realize she was as sick as she was.
Jessica FrankusI would probably would have stressed out if I'd have known.
Guest SpeakerYeah, I thought I had a stomach ulcer at one point.
Guest SpeakerI had such bad indigestion.
Guest SpeakerAnd I don't know if that was from something we ate or maybe the amount of alcohol.
Jessica FrankusYeah.
Guest SpeakerThe day before, it just would jet lag and everything else.
Guest SpeakerBut went to the pharmacy and got some medicine and I was.
Guest SpeakerI was okay the day after.
Guest SpeakerBut yeah, easy.
Guest SpeakerDidn't help that the last meal I ate before I got really sick was eel.
Jessica FrankusYeah, pretty much raw eel.
Guest SpeakerSo that was all I could taste.
Jessica FrankusAnd think of that day was a.
Jessica FrankusSo we booked a day trip.
Jessica FrankusWhat was that town called that we went to?
Guest SpeakerZan.
Guest SpeakerZan.
Jessica FrankusHold on, we're looking it up.
Jessica FrankusN S.
Jessica FrankusAnd then was it S, C, H, A, N, S, however you pronounce that, the we.
Jessica FrankusSo we booked it through, like a company.
Jessica FrankusAnd our guide was Sam.
Jessica FrankusAnd he was absolutely fantastic.
Jessica FrankusHe picked us up in this really nice van, like drove us out to the countryside and we basically spent the majority of the day with him.
Jessica FrankusI think he picked us up at what, like nine?
Jessica FrankusAnd he dropped us off at 2:30ish.
Guest SpeakerYeah.
Guest SpeakerAnd it Was great.
Jessica FrankusYeah, I would highly recommend that.
Jessica FrankusFantastic.
Jessica FrankusWe went and saw windmills.
Jessica FrankusWe went to the church cheese factory.
Jessica FrankusHe took us to lunch.
Jessica FrankusHe took us to this little, like, seaside town thing, and we got to do some shopping and stuff.
Jessica FrankusI kind of felt bad that we both felt so bad because I think we were, like, low energy.
Jessica FrankusLike, we fell asleep on the way back.
Guest SpeakerI feel like I asked him a lot of questions on the way there.
Jessica FrankusYeah, he was super informative.
Jessica FrankusLike, he was very entertaining.
Jessica FrankusAnd I thought.
Jessica FrankusI thought I learned a lot about Amsterdam from him that, like, I probably wouldn't have learned otherwise.
Jessica FrankusOkay, so we talked about what else in Amsterdam.
Jessica FrankusDid we.
Guest SpeakerFun fact about Amsterdam.
Guest SpeakerTheir king really has no power in their government, but makes about 10 million a year and does not pay.
Jessica FrankusYeah, I forgot about that.
Guest SpeakerYeah, I thought that was pretty.
Jessica FrankusYeah, that was another fun fact that we learned from Sam.
Jessica FrankusThe weather.
Jessica FrankusI thought it was a little chilly.
Jessica FrankusIt was a little.
Jessica FrankusI was expecting it to be a lot rainier, but it wasn't all that bad.
Jessica FrankusIt sprinkled a little bit and then it rained for, like, hard for, like, maybe an hour that one day.
Jessica FrankusBut that was really about it.
Guest SpeakerSo, yeah, it was super nice.
Jessica FrankusEverybody was super nice.
Jessica FrankusI didn't think the language barrier was that bad.
Jessica FrankusEverybody, like, as long as you made an effort.
Jessica FrankusI thought everybody was very accommodating, very polite.
Jessica FrankusI don't think their manners were, like.
Jessica FrankusThey weren't like, over the top bubbly.
Jessica FrankusLike, we definitely kind of stood out as Americans in that sense.
Jessica FrankusBut they were very nice, very polite.
Guest SpeakerFor sure.
Jessica FrankusFor sure.
Jessica FrankusTrying to think of what else stood out in Amsterdam.
Guest SpeakerJust giving some information here on our stay if you are planning to go to Amsterdam.
Guest SpeakerOur hotel was called the NH Collection in the Flower Market district.
Jessica FrankusSo, yeah, and it was a great hotel.
Jessica FrankusLike, it was very walkable.
Jessica FrankusI felt super safe.
Jessica FrankusLike, when Jess wasn't feeling good, I went and ate dinner by myself one night and I didn't feel uncomfortable at all.
Jessica FrankusYou've got to get a.
Jessica FrankusOh, let's talk about food.
Jessica FrankusWe didn't.
Jessica FrankusWe haven't talked about food yet.
Jessica FrankusThe Stroop waffles.
Jessica FrankusWe got one of those.
Jessica FrankusJess liked it.
Jessica FrankusIt was a little too sweet for me.
Guest SpeakerYeah.
Jessica FrankusOle Bowlin.
Guest SpeakerI wanted the olive, which is like a donut, essentially their type of donut.
Guest SpeakerBut I wanted one from one of the street vendors and we ended up not being able to find it.
Guest SpeakerI think it was too late in the day at that point.
Guest SpeakerIt was like the last day.
Guest SpeakerAnother Thing is the bitter ballin.
Jessica FrankusIt's like.
Guest SpeakerI almost want to describe it as like a boudin ball.
Guest SpeakerThat's not that.
Guest SpeakerIt's just like fry.
Guest SpeakerIt's like a meat inside, but it's a fried ball.
Jessica FrankusYeah.
Jessica FrankusAnd they have different ones, too.
Guest SpeakerYeah, they have different ones, but that was really good.
Guest SpeakerWe tried that the first day.
Jessica FrankusWhat else did we eat?
Guest SpeakerYou got that cookie croissant.
Jessica FrankusOh, yeah.
Jessica FrankusA crookie.
Jessica FrankusA crookie.
Jessica FrankusThat was really good.
Jessica FrankusIt was from Lorenz or Lauren's.
Jessica FrankusI want to say it's like.
Jessica FrankusIt's all over TikTok.
Jessica FrankusYou can look it up.
Jessica FrankusBut that was.
Jessica FrankusIf you like croissants, you'd really like that.
Jessica FrankusJess doesn't really like croissants, but I loved it.
Jessica FrankusIt literally is like a big fat croissant and it's got three chocolate chip cookies cooked into it.
Jessica FrankusLike it's.
Jessica FrankusIt's a fat treat, but it's so good.
Guest SpeakerSome other aesthetically pleasing places.
Guest SpeakerWe ate the Siren.
Guest SpeakerIt was more maybe like fish and.
Jessica FrankusYep.
Guest SpeakerKind of Mediterranean vibe.
Jessica FrankusVery fresh, very good.
Guest SpeakerThe Secret Garden.
Guest SpeakerVery aesthetically pleasing.
Guest SpeakerCute place.
Guest SpeakerWe got some really good.
Guest SpeakerDid we get sea bass there?
Jessica FrankusWe did.
Jessica FrankusAnd then we had.
Jessica FrankusWhat was that thing wrapped in avocado?
Jessica FrankusOh, yeah, it was sauce on it.
Jessica FrankusIt was probably the best thing I've ever eaten.
Guest SpeakerYeah, that was really good.
Guest SpeakerSo again, maybe kind of similar vibes, but it was really cute.
Guest SpeakerAnd then we sat at their bar after, enjoyed a little bit and they.
Jessica FrankusHad drinks, and then we should have stopped, and then we didn't.
Jessica FrankusBut hey, you know what?
Jessica FrankusWe had fun.
Guest SpeakerI got sick after that.
Guest SpeakerBut that's okay.
Jessica FrankusIt's okay.
Jessica FrankusWe had fun.
Jessica FrankusThat's what you're supposed to do in a foreign country.
Jessica FrankusRight?
Jessica FrankusOh, and then the Sea Palace.
Guest SpeakerOh, my gosh.
Guest SpeakerThat was a big Chinese place.
Jessica FrankusSo we didn't even plan to go to the Sea Palace.
Jessica FrankusWe were actually walking to another place and then.
Jessica FrankusBut the Sea palace is, like, on the water.
Jessica FrankusAnd what did that.
Jessica FrankusWhat did that tour guide say about the Sea palace then when they built it?
Jessica FrankusBecause it's like a.
Guest SpeakerIt sank.
Jessica FrankusYeah.
Jessica FrankusBecause they originally had the same design as in Japan or in China.
Jessica FrankusAnd the people in.
Jessica FrankusWell, just.
Jessica FrankusI want to.
Jessica FrankusI want to say it's China.
Jessica FrankusThe people in China are so much smaller than the people in the Netherlands were.
Jessica FrankusAnd they built it structurally to hold people in China.
Jessica FrankusAnd the people in the Netherlands were so big, they literally sunk the building the first day that they opened.
Jessica FrankusBut they Rebuilt it.
Jessica FrankusAnd so anyway, we went in there and it was.
Guest SpeakerSo it's probably been one of my top favorite meals.
Jessica FrankusGood.
Jessica FrankusThere were these noodles that we ordered, and they were like, thick, fat, soft, like egg noodles.
Jessica FrankusIt was so good.
Guest SpeakerAnd it's on the river, so it's really pretty.
Jessica FrankusThat was delicious.
Guest SpeakerIt kind of reminds me of a casino boat.
Jessica FrankusYeah.
Guest SpeakerBut it's really pretty inside.
Jessica FrankusYeah, it was so good.
Jessica FrankusThat was.
Jessica FrankusThat's.
Jessica FrankusThat was honestly probably one of my favorite places we've eaten.
Guest SpeakerAnd then there's this other place called Adam.
Jessica FrankusAdam A.
Jessica FrankusYeah, the tower.
Guest SpeakerLike this.
Guest SpeakerIt's where they have those swings on top of this huge tower.
Guest SpeakerAnd you could do the swings.
Guest SpeakerWe did not do the swings.
Guest SpeakerWe just went.
Guest SpeakerAte dinner up there and did the lookout.
Guest SpeakerDinner was not worth.
Jessica FrankusYeah, the food was all right.
Jessica FrankusThe food was giving Applebee's.
Jessica FrankusI thought, like, it was kind of like Amsterdam's version of Applebee's.
Guest SpeakerYeah, it's.
Guest SpeakerIt's.
Jessica FrankusThe food was all right.
Jessica FrankusNothing to write home about.
Jessica FrankusThere's.
Jessica FrankusI would go to the tower, but I would eat dinner somewhere else.
Guest SpeakerYeah.
Jessica FrankusWhat else?
Jessica FrankusThere's lots of canals everywhere, lots of flowers.
Jessica FrankusIt's very beautiful.
Guest SpeakerI know what you're asking.
Guest SpeakerDid we go to the red light district?
Guest SpeakerYes, we did.
Jessica FrankusYes, we did.
Jessica FrankusTwice.
Jessica FrankusIt's.
Jessica FrankusIt honestly wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Guest SpeakerWhat do you mean bad?
Jessica FrankusLike, I don't know.
Jessica FrankusI just kind of figured the red light district was going to be a little unsafe.
Jessica FrankusAnd it wasn't.
Guest SpeakerYeah.
Jessica FrankusNobody was really.
Jessica FrankusNobody cared about us as we were walking.
Jessica FrankusAlso.
Guest SpeakerWere there pretty early.
Jessica FrankusWe were there very early.
Jessica FrankusSo that is one thing we've learned in Europe is that they don't get started.
Jessica FrankusLike, they don't crank things up until like, 8:30.
Guest SpeakerNo.
Jessica FrankusAnd we were there.
Jessica FrankusYeah, we were there at, like.
Jessica FrankusWe literally were, like, trying to hang out until the sun went down.
Guest SpeakerDo not even open until like, 7.
Guest Speaker7:30.
Jessica FrankusYeah.
Guest SpeakerLike, do not open their doors.
Jessica FrankusLike, we've made reservations thinking that we, like, got in, like, in hot places.
Jessica FrankusYou're like, oh, we got a 7:30 reservation.
Guest SpeakerThat's literally the first.
Jessica FrankusAnd you're, like, the only person sitting there.
Jessica FrankusAnd it's like, oh, that's why we got a reservation, because we're freaking losers.
Jessica FrankusThis only time we could get in here.
Jessica FrankusLet's see what else about Amsterdam?
Jessica FrankusI think that was really.
Jessica FrankusIt.
Jessica FrankusIt was great.
Guest SpeakerIt was really cute.
Jessica FrankusSuper cute.
Guest SpeakerReally welcoming.
Jessica FrankusVery welcoming.
Jessica FrankusI would bring kids there There were a lot of kids.
Jessica FrankusThere were a lot of kids really safe.
Guest SpeakerLike, I would have gone there alone and for sure.
Jessica FrankusAnd I.
Jessica FrankusI would like, if I ever.
Jessica FrankusFor y'all listening, don't be like, oh, I think she's gonna have a kid now.
Jessica FrankusMaybe not.
Jessica FrankusBut if I ever did have kids, I would want to take them to Amsterdam so that they could see how independent the Dutch children were.
Jessica FrankusBecause, like, the kids were just running around by themselves.
Jessica FrankusLike they were crossing the street and going to school, riding their bikes all over town.
Jessica FrankusLike, it was a very, like, community oriented, very independent minded community.
Jessica FrankusSo I would definitely want my kids to experience that.
Guest SpeakerAnd I did.
Guest SpeakerI did get a bike and ride it around.
Jessica FrankusShe did.
Guest SpeakerBlakely knew her limits.
Jessica FrankusShe did not.
Guest SpeakerAnd we will talk about that.
Jessica FrankusWe'll talk about.
Jessica FrankusWe'll talk about my limits when it comes to bikes in the next episode.
Jessica FrankusBecause I think Jessica doubted me for a second and then she learned real quick, oh, Blakely really does not know how to ride a bike.
Jessica FrankusShe wasn't just making it up.
Jessica FrankusYeah, that's.
Jessica FrankusThat's a conversation for the next episode.
Jessica FrankusOkay, I think we've rambled on about Amsterdam enough.
Jessica FrankusI highly recommend it.
