Speaker A

Hey, what's up, champions? This is your host, Neal Reyes, and I want to welcome you back to the Executive Perspective. Today we're going to be speaking about a topic that's very near and dear to my heart, but I think it's going to resonate strongly with you as well. And the topic that we're speaking about today is the call on your life versus your assignments. I'm going to say that again. The topic that we're speaking about today is the call on your life versus your assignments. You know, one of the things that I've been very, very blessed by the Lord to do is to work in the area of convergence. Specifically, when I talk about convergence, it's helping to understand a person's calling or their destiny within life. You know, I can think of very, very early on within my marriage and my Christian walk. My wife Katie and I got married in our early 20s. And when I got saved and got married to my wife, which were both within pretty close proximity to each other, I remember there was a period very early on where I started praying to God and seeking him for what the calling was for my life. I wanted to know what I was destined for, what he created me for. But I didn't want to just do it for me. I also wanted to know it for my wife. Not because I was just curious, but because as a husband, I was endeavoring to put her needs before my own and help her figure out what she was called to do in life. You know, sometimes we can have conversations with God and He might take days, weeks, months, or sometimes even years or decades before he answers us. But one of the things I've learned about having a relationship with God is that God is a perfect gentleman and he'll never intrude on an area you haven't invited him to speak to you on. Man, that's a strong statement right there. But it's also powerful to understand. Now, whether you are a believer or not, no big deal. But today we're going to be speaking about some things that he showed me and taught me directly that have helped me within my life and I believe can help you as well. You know, sometimes people in life can confuse the two different things. You know, sometimes. And sometimes people don't even understand this process or this concept until their mind awakens to it. And maybe today's that day for you. But every person has a calling on their life from God. Whether you're a believer or not, whether you acknowledge him or not, everybody has a calling on their life. In other words, God designed everyone with a purpose in life. But while you have a calling within your life, you also have assignments. And sometimes people blur the lines by thinking your assignment is the same thing as your calling. But we're going to go over today some things that will help you to understand why there's a difference there, how to delineate between the two, and why it's so important to understand this man. In fact, I almost want to jump ahead of myself on why this is so important. But we'll get. We'll get to it towards the end of this podcast. But the first thing I want to do is I want to go over what the core concept of today's podcast is about. Now, because I say this in every single episode we do, I want to remind you again that this podcast, the executive perspective, focuses on three main areas. It focuses on leadership, business strategy, and personal development. And every topic that we speak on almost can be applied towards all of those in unison. But this is something that I believe will impact many people. The fact is, whether I'm working with people who are very prominent in life, very high achievers, very successful, or whether I'm working with people who are just starting out, just trying to figure things out, the topic of your calling and your assignments and what God has destined you to do or what your destiny is to do in life resonates with both. Because when you take the person who's just starting off, they're trying to figure out what they're meant to do with their life. But when you take the person who's already very prominent and already, I guess, been, I'm sorry, very successful in many different endeavors, that person right there oftentimes, not always, but oftentimes they're still trying to figure out what their higher purpose in life is because they still feel like there's something more. In other words, there's like a longing inside of them. Well, the core concept of today's topic is basically this. Your calling is the overarching purpose God designed you for. Your assignments are the roles, the seasons, and the responsibilities that serve that calling. But they're not the same thing. I'm going to say that again because there's a lot to chew in that statement. Your calling is the overarching purpose that God designed you for. Your assignments are the roles and seasons and responsibilities that serve that calling. But they're not the same thing. I want to open up today with our first thing, which is you only have one true calling in life, but you can have many assignments. I'm going to say that again. Our first topic we're talking about today, or our first thing I should say we're talking about today is you only have one true calling in life, but sometimes you can have many assignments. You know, a quick example I would give to you to support that is I have coached a lot of youth soccer and other countries. I know you call it football, but in the United States, we call it soccer. And I've Coached a lot of youth soccer from the little squirts that they're just trying to figure out what direction to run that all the parents and grandparents love coming out to because it's a great laugh on a Saturday, all the way up to very competitive soccer that goes all the way through high school. And what I will tell you is that oftentimes when we're coaching children in those different seasons, there's different aspects to the game. Sometimes we play them in different positions just so they can get the feel of the game. They can understand how the ball moves in different positions. But as they grow up, typically what you see. Most coaches recognize that certain players have a different propensity to play different positions. You know, sometimes they like playing in the back, or they like playing in the midfield, or they like playing up top. Sometimes they like playing on the right side, or sometimes they like playing on the left side. And so funny, because sometimes you can have a player that's amazing, but you put them on the left side where they normally do strong, and you move them to the right and they just fall apart because they feel out of sorts. In other words, they're out of their comfort zones. Well, what happens with those same players is the ones that are really good, the ones that go on to play in college and get scholarships and sometimes go even go beyond that. One of the things that's very common to see with that is that you'll have players that might play in high school or during their high school years, maybe playing very competitive club soccer, and they might play a certain position that that's their position, and that's what got coaches to acknowledge them and recognize them and their abilities. But when they move into college, it's not uncommon. Doesn't always happen. But it's not uncommon for their new coaches to want to try them out in different positions. And the players are usually willing to that because they want playing time, they want to get on the field rather than just being a backup. And oftentimes coaches will switch them from the position they've always known to a new position because they see new abilities in them. Well, for that player who's called to play soccer and play at a competitive level, their calling hasn't changed, but their assignment has. Now, that's a real basic way of showing the difference between a calling and assignment. But I want to paint clear pictures for you today so that you can understand this, because I know that as people are listening to this today, and I know I opened up with some faith statements, but whether you're a believer or not, I know these things resonate with you because all people want to connect with their higher purpose or destiny in life. Your calling is who you're becoming and what you were born to do. I'm going to say that again. Your calling is who you're becoming and who. Who you were born to do or become or what you were born to do with your life. Now, sometimes it takes time to figure these things out. You know, one of the things I opened up with earlier was the topic of convergence. But you know, the topic of convergence, they say true convergence actually starts around the age of 55. True convergence. Now, that's not to say that people can't connect with it much earlier in life, but if you're feeling like you've missed your calling in life or you've missed your purpose or that thing that you were supposed to do, it doesn't even really start until the ages for most people between 55 to 60. Now, if you're hearing this today and you're much younger than that, that doesn't mean you have to wait. That's just saying what the average is. Because oftentimes people feel that when they're starting to hit their 60s or mid-60s, like life has passed them by. But in certain cases, especially when it comes to convergence and destiny and calling and true success, that's sometimes right about the time, it's barely kicking off. So just understand that. I also want you to understand that your assignments are how you live out in each season. Whether that's your job, whether that's your business, whether that's a position you have within an organization. Maybe you're in ministry or maybe you're in family, but your assignments are how you live it out in each season. In other words, you have your calling, which is your greater calling in life. But then you have assignments that help you feel that. But sometimes those assignments, they're broken up into chapters or they're broken up into seasons. Here's my first leadership truth bomb for you today. Your assignment may change, but your calling stays consistent. I'm going to say that again because that's a big one. Your assignment may change, but your calling stays consistent. Now, the next thing I want to talk to you about is that confusing the two, it can lead to what's referred to as identity drift. In other words, if you confuse what calling is with what assignment is, or vice versa, it can lead to identity drift. In other words, you might feel like you're drifting because now you have confusion. Is your assignment more important Than your calling. Is your calling supposed to be part of your assignment or they both supposed to be the same? And if you get stuck in that trap, it can lead to confusion within your life. If you make. I'm sorry. If you mistake your assignment for your calling, then when assignments end or your assignment ends, you can have a sense of identity that can collapse. I'm going to say that again. When you have an assignment in your life and you confuse that with your calling, when that assignment comes to close or comes to an end, it can feel as though your identity has been lost, like it's collapsed on you. That's why sometimes when you have people who've worked in the same job or the same organization for many, many, many years, and if a new boss comes in and they make some changes, or let's just say they come up for retirement, or let's just say something happens and maybe the business, maybe the owner of the business decides to sell it and they decide to bring on a new company and your position ends, or something like that. If someone has their identity tied to their assignment, and this is speaking right now, so pay attention. If someone has their identity attached to their assignment, their job, if that job ever comes to an end, they can feel absolutely lost. They can feel like they have nothing to live for or like life has ended. But yet that's false and erroneous. Because your calling and your assignment are two different things. Now, your assignment you may have had for many years, but when one door closes, another one opens. And when one assignment finishes, God always has another one ready for you to pick up. Man, this is such a significant thing. This is why some people feel lost after leaving a role or even competing or completing a project. And here's what I will tell you. If someone has a project that they've been working on, some projects can last years. I've been part of companies where certain projects lasted years. If you have a project that lasts a long time and then that project comes to an end, you can have a person feeling kind of out of sorts or just discombobulated, like they don't know what they're supposed to do. Same thing happens with the role. Same things also happen with competitions. If you have someone who's an athlete, for example, that's playing at a very high level, they can strive and strive and strive to win the championship, but when they finally get that first championship, it feels amazing. But afterwards, if you talk to athletes, sometimes it can also feel empty because they won the championship. Now what? Now the really competitive ones they're already after their next championship. But sometimes, even though you can work so hard to win something, it can feel hollow afterwards if that's what your identity is wrapped up in. Now, if your identity is not wrapped up in that competition, if your identity is connected with your calling in life and what you're supposed to do, well, then your assignment for that season was to win a championship. But the very next season you got a new assignment. It just happens to be to win another championship. And winning championships are not easy and they're not automatic. But it takes work. But they're part of different seasons. In other words, it's a new assignment. Well, winning championships in life is much the same way. If you want to win championships in life, you need to make sure that your identity is attached to your calling and not your assignment. Now that doesn't mean to shun your assignments, that doesn't mean to belittle them anyways. But your assignments are how you carry out or fulfill your calling. But your assignments are not your identity. Here's another leadership truth bomb for you today. When your assignment ends, your calling doesn't. It simply shifts in a new direction. Now every assignment should advance or complement your calling. I'm going to say that again because that's a big time statement. Every assignment should advance or complement your calling. Now here's an easy way or question that you can ask of yourself. Does this assignment bring me closer to who I'm called to be? Now this is especially important when people have change of seasons in front of them or when they have new opportunities in front of them. You know, not every opportunity that comes by you is God's purpose for your life. You know, sometimes people take new jobs just based on money. You know, they want to make more money or make the big checks, but they leave where they were supposed to have been and they don't feel fulfilled. They don't feel, they don't even like the environment as much. They got a bigger check, but there's no joy in it. In other words, they're out of alignment with their self. They're not in congruence with themselves. And as they're not living congruent with what their calling is in life, they're empty. They're unfulfilled. And I will tell you that a life with no joy is no life at all. Man, that's a terrible way to live. When you ask yourself, does this assignment bring me closer to what I'm called to do? Well, when you know what you're called to do in Life. Asking yourself about your assignments helps you because it helps you know you're fulfilling that thing you're supposed to do. Now, for the person who's still seeking what their calling is, oftentimes the best way to find what your calling is, or at least the direction is pointed in, is to understand sometimes the things that come simplest and easiest to you. Those are the things that people are willing to discount the most because things that come easiest to you, since they're so simple for you, you feel like they're just simple for everyone. But that's not the case. Sometimes those things that are easiest for you are the very things you're supposed to help others with. Sometimes the things you've had to overcome in life. And oftentimes people overcome tragedies or hard setbacks or just difficult situations in life, embarrassing moments, and they'll carry shame on their life or embarrassment where they want to actually hide that from other people. But yet the very same thing that you made it through is the very same thing that you're qualified to speak to others about. In other words, you're qualified to speak to others about it because you first made it through it. You're speaking from a place of experience, but this is a big one. You're also speaking from a place of victory. And I knew that resonate with some of you. You're speaking from a place of victory. Not every opportunity is a God ordained assignment. This is why discernment matters in life so much. You know, if we were talking, if I were breaking down a hardcore Bible study for you, and I were talking about the gifts of the Holy Spirit, there is a discerning of spirit's gifts. But when we're talking just in general spiritual aptitude or just personal aptitude, you have to have what I refer to as discernment. In other words, you have to have good judgment. You have to be able to have discernment where you're able to divide things from the right and the left, or from forward or from backwards or from up or from down. In other words, it's just a discernment of you're able to know how to separate things apart from each other and see them for what they really are. And when you're taking on new assignments in life, man, I always pray for the wisdom to see the end from the beginning because it's a biblical concept. But I will tell you that knowing how to pray like that, or at least how to see things like that, it helps you see things a little clearer. In other words, you have A little more clarity around them. This is extremely, extremely important. The other thing I will tell you as we talk about callings is if you're trying to figure what's yours out. Oftentimes, people's callings have to deal with their gift clusters. In other words, what are they really good at doing with in life? You know, if you're really good at working with spreadsheets and numbers and things of that nature, then there's a chance that that feeds into your overall calling in life. However, if you're really called and gifted to be able to speak with people and help people, and help them connect to people or things, there's a chance that that's part of your calling in life. But sometimes it's about understanding those deeper things within your life. Now, here's another leadership truth bomb for you today. Just because it's available doesn't mean it's in alignment. I'm going to say that again. Just because it's available doesn't mean it's in alignment. You know, sometimes in life we can have things that pop up that they may make all the saints in the world. Biblically speaking. The Bible tells us that there are times that in a man's mind, a way can seem right, but in the end it can lead to death. In other words, destruction or turmoil or something like that. In other words, if you rely on logic, sometimes there's things that make so much sense that how could this not be the right thing? But inside, if you have a turmoil or confusion, that's the Holy Spirit telling you that things not what God wants for you. Yet there are other times where in your mind something might make no sense at all. But if inside you, you have a peace and a calm inside you, that's usually the Holy Spirit's calling or guiding on you, telling you, this is what I want you to do. When you learn how to follow those guidings, those leadings and guidings, life gets a whole lot simpler. So understand that just because something's available doesn't mean it's in alignment. You have to be able to try to see the bigger picture when you're talking about your calling versus your assignment. And your assignments should always bring you closer to your calling or fulfilling your calling, and they should always support that. If they're totally opposite of what you've been called to do in life, then they're not congruent with you. They're not in alignment with you. You. When you know your calling in life, you can begin to lead with clarity. I'm going to say that again. When you know your calling in life, you can begin to lead with clarity. You stop chasing status or applause or approval and you start choosing purpose and fulfillment. I'm going to say that again. You stop chasing status, applause or approval and you start choosing purpose and fulfillment. In other words, you start taking the assignments that you know will fulfill you or feel like they have purpose. In other words, they resonate with you as something that means something to you. You make decisions faster and you also tend to lead with conviction. Again, when you know your calling, you can lead with clarity and you make decisions faster and you can lead with stronger conviction. Now, here's another leadership truth bomb for you today. Knowing your calling simplifies your yes, but it also strengthens your no. That's a big one right there. Knowing your calling simplifies your yes, but it also strengthens your no or your ability to say no to things, or your ability that once you said no, you don't turn back on that. You stick to your no so that you can be available for the yes. And that speaks right there. It is so important in life that when we first of all have to be able to know when to say no and we have to be resolute and confident to say say no. But once you say no, you stick to it. Not at a point of contention or a point of pride, but the reason why you stick with your no is so that you can be available for your yes. Or you can say yes to the things you said yes to. And that's powerful. And our closing thoughts for today are calling is the overarching theme of your life. Your assignment or assignments are the story broken down into seasons and chapters. If you anchor yourself in your calling, you'll always understand the relevance of the assignment. I'm going to say that one more time because again, there's a lot to chew with that one. Your calling is the overarching theme of your life. Your assignment is the story broken down into seasons and chapters. Anchor yourself in your calling and you'll always understand the relevance of your assignment. Guys, I want to as I'm closing today, I want to thank you for stopping by and growing me today. But before you jump off of this, I want you to hear this from me, because I might be the only person you hear this from today. I want you to hear from me that I believe in you. I believe in you, Champion. I believe that you have greatness that lives on the inside of you. You just need to continue to cultivate it, to groom it and to grow it and bring it on the outside so that others can see it. And then whatever that thing is that you're called to do in life, I want to encourage you to smash it. I believe you're called for greatness, and I believe in you. And I want you to know you should believe in yourself. I believe you've been called to greatness. It's living right on the inside of you. You just have to cultivate it and get it on the outside. But I want you to know I believe in you because that's where it starts. It always starts with someone who believes in us.
