Here is your host, Randy Black.

Speaker 2 00:00:48

We come together today to look at the next in our series of the miracles of Jesus.

Speaker 2 00:00:54

Today we are going to explore the story of Jesus healing people.

Speaker 2 00:00:59

This is recorded in Matthew chapter 8 verses 14 and 15, Mark chapter 1, verses 29 through 31.

Speaker 2 00:01:09

and Luke chapter four, verses thirty-eight and thirty-nine.

Speaker 2 00:01:14

This miracle demonstrates Jesus' compassion, his authority, and the importance of intercession and service.

Speaker 2 00:01:23

These three scriptures demonstrate Jesus' healing power and how that it can transform our lives, prompting us to respond with gratitude.

Speaker 2 00:01:37

And with service.

Speaker 2 00:01:39

As we do each week, let's open up today and our lesson with a prayer.

Speaker 2 00:01:46

Heavenly Father, we come before you today with hearts full of gratitude and reverence.

Speaker 2 00:01:54

We thank you for your word that guides us.

Speaker 2 00:01:58

comforts us and reveals your great love and power as we dive into this story of Jesus healing Peter's mother-in-law

Speaker 2 00:02:12

Open up our hearts and our minds to receive your message.

Speaker 2 00:02:17

May we be encouraged and strengthened in our faith

Speaker 2 00:02:22

Knowing that you are a God who heals and restores.

Speaker 2 00:02:27

In Jesus' name we pray.

Speaker 2 00:02:29

Amen

Speaker 3 00:02:31

Matthew chapter 8, verses 14 and 15.

Speaker 3 00:02:35

And when Jesus was coming to Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever.

Speaker 3 00:02:41

And he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she arose and ministered unto them.

Speaker 3 00:02:49

Mark one verses twenty nine through thirty one

Speaker 3 00:02:53

And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

Speaker 3 00:03:02

But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her.

Speaker 3 00:03:08

And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up

Speaker 3 00:03:12

And immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.

Speaker 3 00:03:16

Luke chapter 4, verses 38 and 39

Speaker 3 00:03:20

And he arose out of the synagogue and entered into Simon's house.

Speaker 3 00:03:24

And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever, and they besought him for her.

Speaker 3 00:03:30

And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.

Speaker 2 00:03:39

The healing of Peter's mother-in-law is a significant event that is recorded in three of the four gospels.

Speaker 2 00:03:48

It's illustrating Jesus' compassion.

Speaker 2 00:03:51

Jesus' power, and the importance of intercession and service.

Speaker 2 00:03:56

Each gospel provides a slightly different perspective that helps enrich our understanding of this event.

Speaker 2 00:04:06

In Matthew's account, the narrative is fairly straightforward.

Speaker 2 00:04:10

Jesus sees this sick woman.

Speaker 2 00:04:13

He touches her hand, and she is healed

Speaker 2 00:04:16

This version emphasizes Jesus' immediate compassion and his gentle touch, which brings about complete healing

Speaker 2 00:04:26

According to biblical scholar William Barclay, Matthew's gospel often highlights the authority of Jesus' word and action.

Speaker 2 00:04:35

It reinforces the divine power inherent in Jesus' touch.

Speaker 2 00:04:42

Mark's gospel provides additional context

Speaker 2 00:04:45

Mentioning that Jesus was accompanied by James and John, and that he took the woman by the hand and lifted her up

Speaker 2 00:04:53

Mark's emphasis on Jesus lifting her by the hand underscores the personal connection and care that Jesus showed to this woman

Speaker 2 00:05:05

The immediate response of service from the healed woman reflects Mark's theme of discipleship and the call to serve

Speaker 2 00:05:15

Luke's version, though, includes details that are present, but those who are present besought Jesus on her behalf, highlighting the role of intercession.

Speaker 2 00:05:26

Luke was known for his detailed and compassionate narratives.

Speaker 2 00:05:31

He describes Jesus standing over her and rebuking the fever.

Speaker 2 00:05:36

portraying Jesus' authoritative word against illness.

Speaker 2 00:05:42

This aligns with Luke's broader theme of Jesus as the compassionate healer and the Son of Man with authority

Speaker 2 00:05:49

over all creation.

Speaker 2 00:05:52

In all three accounts, the response of Peter's mother in law is immediate and practical.

Speaker 2 00:05:59

She raises and begins to serve

Speaker 2 00:06:03

The act of service signifies not only her gratitude, but also the restoration of her strength and her health

Speaker 2 00:06:13

It also mirrors the Christian call to respond to God's grace with active service.

Speaker 2 00:06:22

We have some key takeaways from these three scriptures.

Speaker 2 00:06:26

The first is Jesus' compassion.

Speaker 2 00:06:28

In each account, we see Jesus' immediate response to the need.

Speaker 2 00:06:33

His compassion is evident as he heals Peter's mother-in-law without delay.

Speaker 2 00:06:39

This reminds us that Jesus cares deeply about our struggles and our pains.

Speaker 2 00:06:46

Our second takeaway is Jesus' authority over illness.

Speaker 2 00:06:50

Jesus' ability to heal with a touch or a word

Speaker 2 00:06:54

demonstrates his divine authority over sickness and disease.

Speaker 2 00:06:58

It is a testament to his power and a reminder that nothing is too difficult for him.

Speaker 2 00:07:06

Third is the response to the healing.

Speaker 2 00:07:10

After being healed, Peter's mother-in-law immediately began to serve

Speaker 2 00:07:15

Her response teaches us that our gratitude for God's intervention in our lives should lead us to a desire to serve Him and others.

Speaker 2 00:07:26

Our fourth takeaway is the intercession of others.

Speaker 2 00:07:30

In Mark and Luke, it's mentioned that others informed Jesus of her condition or asked him to help

Speaker 2 00:07:38

This highlights the importance of interceding on behalf of others, bringing their needs before Jesus in prayer

Speaker 2 00:07:47

And our last takeaway is the restoration to wholeness.

Speaker 2 00:07:52

Jesus' healing was complete and immediate

Speaker 2 00:07:56

It allowed Peter's mother-in-law to return to her daily activities without delay.

Speaker 2 00:08:02

This signifies that when Jesus heals, he restores us fully, enabling us to live out our purpose.

Speaker 2 00:08:13

Reflecting on this miracle, we're reminded of the multifaceted nature of Jesus' ministry.

Speaker 2 00:08:20

His compassion, authority, and willingness to respond to our needs are evident in this miracle.

Speaker 2 00:08:27

How often

Speaker 2 00:08:29

Do we take our burdens and the burdens of others to Jesus, trusting in his power to heal and to restore?

Speaker 2 00:08:36

Do we, like Peter's mother in law, respond with immediate gratitude and a heart ready to serve?

Speaker 2 00:08:44

The role of intercession is particularly striking in Luke's account.

Speaker 2 00:08:48

Those present beseech Jesus on behalf of Peter's mother-in-law, demonstrating the importance of community and collective prayer.

Speaker 2 00:08:58

This act of interceding for one another is a powerful reminder of the support and the strength

Speaker 2 00:09:06

found in the body of Christ.

Speaker 2 00:09:08

We are encouraged to lift each other up in prayer, bringing our needs and the needs of others before Jesus with faith and trust.

Speaker 2 00:09:17

Moreover, the immediate service of Peter's mother-in-law post-healing serves as a great example of how we should respond to God's grace in our lives.

Speaker 2 00:09:28

Her act of service was a natural expression of gratitude and recognition of Jesus' miraculous intervention.

Speaker 2 00:09:36

This challenges us to reflect on how we can use our restored health, talents, and blessings to serve others and further God's kingdom

Speaker 2 00:09:47

Let's now close out our lesson with a prayer.

Speaker 2 00:09:52

Gracious Lord, we thank you for the powerful reminder of your compassion and authority through the healing of Peter's mother-in-law.

Speaker 2 00:10:00

Help us to remember that you are always near, ready to touch our lives with your healing power

Speaker 2 00:10:08

May our hearts be filled with gratitude, prompting us to serve you and others with joy and dedication.

Speaker 2 00:10:16

Teach us to be intercessors, lifting up those in need to you in prayer.

Speaker 2 00:10:23

We trust in your ability to restore and to make whole

Speaker 2 00:10:28

In Jesus' name we pray.

Speaker 2 00:10:30

Amen.

and and share the name of Robert with with the Lord.

Speaker 2 00:11:55

Robert is an an older gentleman at our church who has

Speaker 2 00:11:59

fallen recently and he's had trouble walking since then.

Speaker 2 00:12:03

Uh it's prevented him from being able to make it out for services for a few weeks now.

Speaker 2 00:12:08

He really wants to be there when I've stopped and talked to him.

Speaker 2 00:12:11

So it's it's it's it's hurting him to not be there.

Speaker 2 00:12:15

But please remember him as you pray that the Lord may touch him and heal him as he sees fit

Speaker 2 00:12:21

So let's go ahead and close out our show today with one last prayer.

Speaker 2 00:12:28

Heavenly Father, we thank you once again for the chance to gather together and learn from your word.

Speaker 2 00:12:35

We come together to raise up, lift up requests that are spoken and unspoken from our audience so that you can touch them in the way that you best see fit.

Speaker 2 00:12:45

We especially want to lift up the name of Robert.

Speaker 2 00:12:47

Please touch him and help him to continue to heal so that we might see him back in church services with us very soon.

Speaker 2 00:12:56

You hold the answers to all of our prayers.

Speaker 2 00:12:59

And we trust you and your wisdom in meeting those requests with the answers that you provide.

Speaker 2 00:13:07

It is in your name that we work and strive to share you with the world in hopes that they might accept your Son Jesus as their Savior.

Speaker 2 00:13:18

and then spend eternity in heaven with you and all of the saved.

Speaker 2 00:13:22

Amen.

Speaker 2 00:13:24

On our next episode, we're going to look at the events that

Speaker 2 00:13:27

Immediately followed this after Jesus healed Peter's mother-in-law, when Jesus heals many people that evening as they're brought to him.

Speaker 2 00:13:36

You can see these accounts again in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

Speaker 2 00:13:39

In Matthew chapter 8, the next two verses, 16 and 17, in Mark chapter 1, 32 through 34, and in Luke

Speaker 2 00:13:49

Uh chapter four will be verses forty and forty one.
