: It's around the house when it comes to remodeling and renovating your home. There is a lot to know though. We've got you covered. This is around the house. Welcome to The Round the House Show. This is where we help you get the most outta your home through information and education. Happy, midweek. Special everybody.
[00:00:33] Eric Goranson: Hope every. Is doing great. If you miss the show on Saturday, go back and take a look at Eric Ani from Mechanical Hub. That is one of the best ones we've done in a while. You don't wanna miss that episode. There's a lot there to check out. Well, I've got a lot to talk about today here on the, uh, midweek special.
[00:00:51] Eric Goranson: First off, this is something for you people and the Midwest North, where you've got a lot of snow and even maybe [00:01:00] California, which I don't usually put those all together in the same sentence with snow. that Nevada. Be careful up there. Sierra Nevadas, South Dakota fire officials are informing residents to check their gas meters to ensure snow isn't covering them.
[00:01:16] Eric Goranson: Following two house explosions. So they're caused by large amounts of snow on their gas meters. According to the City of Madison Fire Department. Uh, on March 12th, the agency released footage of home explosion obtained by story full. Anyway, long story short, nobody was home. No injuries, but quite the blast.
[00:01:39] Eric Goranson: Large amounts of snow can put heavy weight and pressure on the pipes, which ultimately causes them to break and fall. In both home explosions, there was 10 plus feeder snow on the gas meter. So that tells you if you got two inches of snow, don't worry about it. But if it's buried out there, yeah, be careful of that.[00:02:00]
[00:02:00] Eric Goranson: So the other thing is, is you can get snow clogging the vent on their regulator, which can help build up pressure. , which can also cause that to leak into the home. And the other thing is, is make sure around your dryer vent and any of your air intake and exhausts on the side of your home. So like if you've got a, uh, natural gas or oil furnace and that may, might vent out the side.
[00:02:21] Eric Goranson: Make sure that's all clear. Keep that snow way away from it. And, uh, there's no reasonable amount of snow that they say should be on your gas meter. So just clean it off as best you can. You'll be fine. , but, uh, wow, who would've thought that, uh, a gas meter could have caused that? So just make sure that you've got all those vents and stuff on the side of the house opened up.
[00:02:41] Eric Goranson: Be careful when you get out there, but, uh, make sure that if those are covered by snow, that, uh, you've got that covered. So make sure that that's, uh, all cleaned out and ready to go. Not a whole lot on the recall front right now that I've seen this week. Uh, just a little update there. [00:03:00] There is, uh, kind of the biggest one that I saw here is the Yeti recalls 1.9 million soft coolers.
[00:03:07] Eric Goranson: Uh, the magnet could come off and get into kids. If they eat, it could kill 'em. And then Dr. Power Equipment is recalling their Pro XL 5 0 1 stripper shredder, uh, laceration problems there. And then I think the last one I saw was, what was that one? That one was kind of a big one too. So that was, um, an air fryer, which was 2 million Corsi air fryers we recalled by, uh, so it's Cor Kari, sorry, 2 million Kari, c o s o r i.
[00:03:38] Eric Goranson: It's a white kaori. Air fryer due to fire and burn hazards. So, uh, wire connection, the fire can overheat and cause a fire. So, uh, do not use it. Unplug it. Contact, uh, Kaori for a re for a free replacement or another product. So, uh, go to recall kaori.com for more information on that one. [00:04:00] That's a big one, and that kind of covers that well today.
[00:04:02] Eric Goranson: I wanted to talk about after our little explosive discussion. I wanted to talk about primers and paint because I tell you what, this week has been a social media question on primers, and I kind of wanted to go through that and discuss that a little bit because primer is not all that it's caked up to be seriously, guys.
[00:04:25] Eric Goranson: I mean, so many people go out and just buy that paint and primer in one and have no idea that they're doing the wrong. And so let's talk a little bit about primers here, cuz there are so many different kinds of primers out there. And I'm just gonna use, uh, K's as a great example because I'm not endorsing 'em by any mean, but it's a common brand out there and they have a lot to select from.
[00:04:49] Eric Goranson: So let's talk about that. So when you look at the primaries, there's lots of different types of primers out there. So let's say you want to seal a porous [00:05:00] surface. That's really where when you, let's say it's um, something that can soak up a lot of paint, which quite frankly costs you a lot of paint and a lot of time.
[00:05:12] Eric Goranson: So just using one of the basic kills primers, their interior primers, you know, comes in the gray that kills one interior primer. Or the K's to all purpose. Interior, exterior primer is really good for that. That is really what that's made for. Now, if you've got brand new drywall, that's where you want to use the K's P V A Drywall Primer.
[00:05:36] Eric Goranson: That's where that's really good for. Now, if you wanna do something where you've got poor adhesion, like maybe you've got flaking pain on the wall, or somebody didn't wash or prime the job correctly before and you got things coming off, this is where you wanna look for an adhesion primer that really grips the surface so that just sprinkler paint could stick to it.
[00:05:57] Eric Goranson: Maybe it's slick, it's glossy. [00:06:00] Maybe it's an aluminum vinyl, PVC ceramic tile glass block. You're trying to do something. That regular paint's not meant to stick to. Right. So an adhesion primer is, you know, you can get it of course in a can, like a normal paint. You could also get a aerosol as well. But Kils makes an adhesion primer that is meant to go just on that.
[00:06:24] Eric Goranson: So it's a water-based modified acrylic primer, specifically formulated a bond. A lot of those tough, you know, surfaces like pvc, vinyl, kinnar from Micah, glass tile, glazed brick, chalky paints, glossy finishes, fiberglass and metals. And so that's a really good one. And here's what's cool is you could actually use epoxy lacquer products containing Zion and other hot solvents.
[00:06:52] Eric Goranson: You just have to let it dry for 24 hours before top coating. And like anything, you gotta make sure you test it, that it's compatible. [00:07:00] But that's another one there. And they also have their kills clear, which is another, uh, clear sealer bonding primer. That's a good one there. Now if you've got a wall, let's say it looks like a 1990 Starbucks coffee shop, where you got the, the clay colors and the greens and the dark colors on the walls, and you want to fix, , that's when you want to get something that's gonna hide, you know, basically the previous color.
[00:07:27] Eric Goranson: And the problem is, is when you go from a a dark color to a white man, those colors can bleed through. Especially when you see reds and some of those others. It really goes through there. So you want something that's got some hiding power, and so that's where you want to go into something for those drastic color changes.
[00:07:45] Eric Goranson: That's when you want to use like the K'S two gray interior exterior. That is a stain blocking primer built for dark rich colors. So that's a, that's the [00:08:00] perfect one to use right there. And that will reduce the number of top coats that you'll need to do. And, uh, it's really going to go well. So that is meant to go over the top of that.
[00:08:11] Eric Goranson: So when you're doing color changes, that's a big one. Now, if you've got stains that you're trying to do, you know, You know, it could be just something primers, you know, can be kind of tricky with this. But really if you've got like scuff marks, hand prints, pencil, ink, pen, basic light stuff, that's where you really just want to use one of the heavy duty hide hiding stain blockers.
[00:08:33] Eric Goranson: So KS has their premium primer three, which is their heavy duty hide, hide. Stain and sealer blocker. That's where you want to go. Now you can go use just their kills. Restoration, interior primer. That will work as well, but really that's good for the light stains. Now, if you've got severe stains, like I'm talking, you had a fire, a flood, you know, smoke from fire damage or smoking, [00:09:00] you know, any of that stuff, permanent marker, graffiti, nicotine, cosmetics.
[00:09:08] Eric Goranson: Cedar Redwood that has got tannins that lived to bleed through it. You know, any of that stuff right there. This is kind of where you either want to go back to the kill's original interior primer that works well. That's really what that's made for, and you can go in and hit that and that's the blocking, heavy duty stain and odor.
[00:09:29] Eric Goranson: That's just what that's made for. Now, if you wanna seal and block odors, Maybe it's a musty basement. Maybe it's smoke again too. And that's a really good one. You want to actually have a primer that's gonna stop those molecules from going through the paint. And that's really, again, when you want to go into that, uh, kills restoration.
[00:09:52] Eric Goranson: That's gonna help seal that off, and that's gonna keep even pet smokes odors. That's really what this stuff's meant for. Again, that's using the [00:10:00] right primer for that. Now here's the other thing. If you're in a bathroom, a kitchen, or in a basement, that you've got that mildew stuff down there and it's nasty and you want to do that, kills does make a mold in mildew primer, and that's an interior exterior.
[00:10:20] Eric Goranson: Uh, and then they also have a, um, a kills kitchen, a bath as well. But, and those are meant for, you know, areas that are gonna be damp and, and that kind of stuff. But I'll be honest, there are better products than even using this that I would use over the Ks brand. And like I said, this is not a KS promotion here by any means, but, uh, if you talk to Andrew Pace, who is one of my leading experts on mold, callwell is a finish.
[00:10:46] Eric Goranson: You should be looking at that actually can kill mold and mildew and stuff like that. It'll keep it from growing on it from up to five years because of the paint makeup, it is so caustic that it literally can't grow on it. [00:11:00] So instead of using like mild decides and chemicals, this is using just basic pH to stop that from happen.
[00:11:08] Eric Goranson: So that's really where that's gonna pay off for you. And, uh, I would switch over if you've got the mold and mildew stuff over to the Callow in that way. You don't have to worry about it at all. And I think you'll be a lot better off that way. But anyway, those are kind of the things that I would take a peek at.
[00:11:24] Eric Goranson: Um, you know, if you're thinking about primers, uh, primer is really important other than just doing a regular. You know, refresh, repaint, sometimes that primer is really gonna help you, especially with drastic colors. And then like, always prep is the main thing. You know, primer's not gonna fix a bad prep job.
[00:11:44] Eric Goranson: You really need to go through, wipe the walls down, clean 'em up, even if it's in a kid's bedroom and you're like, ah, nothing really happened to near. Wipe the walls down with a wet rag. Clean it before you do anything. And you're gonna stop about a third of the adhesion problems you'll have [00:12:00] just by cleaning that.
[00:12:00] Eric Goranson: So spend the time and do that paint right, and that's gonna make things so much easier. We got a great show coming up this weekend. We have our spring home maintenance checklist and so much more this weekend that you don't wanna miss on around the house. I gotta go get going. I've gotta shoot to go out to here.
[00:12:16] Eric Goranson: I am heading out. I'm. I got a PIL pilgrimage to go to today, which I'm looking forward to. A little sneak peek into an upcoming episode of Around the House Northwest.
