Speaker A

Have you ever caught yourself doing something that you don't even believe in anymore just because it's what people expect of you?

Speaker A

The smiling, the saying yes.

Speaker B

The holding your tongue, the being strong even when you're tired.

Speaker B

The showing up even when you'd rather rest.

Speaker B

At some point, you have to look.

Speaker A

In the mirror and say, I don't.

Speaker B

Have to answer to that anymore.

Speaker C

Celebrate the journey every single day.

Speaker C

Aging with grace and style in our own special way.

Speaker B

Hey, beautiful lady.

Speaker B

Welcome back to Aging with Grace and Style.

Speaker B

I'm your host, Valerie, and today we're.

Speaker A

Closing out the Becoming series with a mic drop moment.

Speaker A

If you've ever felt boxed in by.

Speaker B

Labels, too much, too old, not enough.

Speaker B

The strong one, the fixer, the one who keeps it all together, then this one's for you.

Speaker B

Today we're going to name the expectations.

Speaker A

That we never asked for and release.

Speaker B

Them with a little grace, a little.

Speaker A

Fire, and maybe even in red boots.

Speaker B

Or a dress that makes no apologies.

Speaker A

So grab your coffee, your tea, or your favorite glass of something sparkly, and.

Speaker B

Let'S get into it.

Speaker A

Let's start with a little honesty.

Speaker B

How many of us have been called.

Speaker A

Too much at some point?

Speaker A

Too opinionated, Too emotional, Too loud?

Speaker A

Or maybe the opposite.

Speaker A

Not enough.

Speaker A

Not thin enough, not soft enough, not young enough.

Speaker A

And of course, there's the classic, aren't you too old for that?

Speaker A

I remember a time someone said that to me.

Speaker A

I was trying on a pair of red boots.

Speaker A

Yes, they were knee high.

Speaker A

Yes, with a heel.

Speaker A

And yes, I felt fabulous.

Speaker B

The sales clerk looked at me and.

Speaker A

Said, kind of with a tone, oh, those are fun for someone your age, you know, I looked at her like.

Speaker B

What do you mean, for someone my age?

Speaker A

Now, I could have let it slide, but instead I bought the boots and.

Speaker B

I wore them right out of the store.

Speaker A

And let's be honest, I probably walked.

Speaker B

A little slower on purpose, just so.

Speaker A

People, especially her, could see them.

Speaker A

Because here's the thing.

Speaker A

It's not always what people say.

Speaker A

It's the unspoken expectations.

Speaker A

Like, after 50, you're supposed to become invisible.

Speaker A

Unless, of course, someone needs something from you.

Speaker A

Like advice, a casserole, a ride to.

Speaker B

The airport, or help with their Amazon return.

Speaker A

You get the picture.

Speaker A

Let's be real.

Speaker B

These labels are like carrying around a.

Speaker A

Suitcase full of bricks.

Speaker A

Only you don't.

Speaker A

You didn't pack it yourself.

Speaker A

Somewhere along the way, we start quietly.

Speaker B

Refusing to answer to those labels.

Speaker A

Maybe you stop volunteering for every committee at work or church because it gets.

Speaker B

To be too much.

Speaker A

I remember my Former pastor used to say that 20% of the people do 80% of the work.

Speaker A

And trust me, I truly believe that.

Speaker B

Maybe you started saying no to obligations that drained you.

Speaker A

Maybe you booked that solo trip.

Speaker B

Maybe you wore the red boots in that dress.

Speaker B

You didn't make a big announcement.

Speaker A

You just stopped playing along.

Speaker A

And sometimes that's the most powerful move of all.

Speaker A

Here are a few stories from women who did just that.

Speaker B

Carol.

Speaker A

She's 62.

Speaker B

She told me I used to feel.

Speaker A

Responsible for everyone's happiness.

Speaker A

If my kids were upset, if my husband was stressed, I thought it was my job to fix it.

Speaker A

Now I listen, I support, but I don't carry it all.

Speaker A

She said she realized that she's not the family therapist.

Speaker A

And you know what?

Speaker B

After I read that note from Carol.

Speaker A

It so reminded me of me.

Speaker A

For some reason, I feel I need to be the fixer for everyone.

Speaker A

I recently started paying attention to this.

Speaker A

I'm not sure if it's a control thing or what it is, but it's something that I'm working on as it.

Speaker B

Will wear you out.

Speaker B

Then there's Linda.

Speaker A

She said a coworker once told her that you're too old to start something new.

Speaker B

So what does she do?

Speaker B

She started her own business.

Speaker B

Best decision she ever made, she told me.

Speaker A

And then there was a third one that wrote in, she wanted to remain anonymous.

Speaker A

So we'll call her Katie.

Speaker A

She said I stopped dyeing my hair.

Speaker A

I was terrified at first, but now.

Speaker B

I love my silver strands.

Speaker B

They're my badge of honor.

Speaker A

And I'll just add, if you're still managing the group text, coordinating family vacations, and printing everybody's boarding passes, you're a.

Speaker B

Full time project manager with no pto.

Speaker A

No bonus, and definitely no HR department.

Speaker A

It's okay to step back from all of that.

Speaker A

It doesn't make you selfish, it makes you smart.

Speaker A

Let's be real.

Speaker A

Some of the labels that we carried, we didn't choose.

Speaker A

But we can choose to stop answering to them.

Speaker A

So here are a few mic drop truths that I want you to carry into this week.

Speaker A

You're not too old to start over.

Speaker B

You're not required to be everyone's emotional life raft.

Speaker B

You are not responsible for keeping the peace at your own expense.

Speaker B

You're not too much.

Speaker A

You've just outgrown playing small.

Speaker A

Let's make this practical.

Speaker A

Number one, say no.

Speaker A

Period.

Speaker A

You don't have to explain, you don't have to soften it.

Speaker B

Try this.

Speaker A

No, I'm not available.

Speaker A

And then, girl, sip your tea.

Speaker A

Number Two, check your inner voice.

Speaker A

Replace I should with I choose.

Speaker A

Say I choose to rest.

Speaker A

I choose not to engage.

Speaker B

I choose me.

Speaker B

3.

Speaker A

Start a done list.

Speaker A

At the end of the day, jot down what you did, even if it's just made up the bed and drank some water.

Speaker A

Celebrate that, because some days, that's a win.

Speaker A

And then four, be around people who get it.

Speaker B

Find the folks who say, girl, wear the boots.

Speaker A

Not the one who asks why, just the ones who say.

Speaker A

And then text me the pictures of you in them.

Speaker A

And then five.

Speaker B

Try one new thing.

Speaker B

Not for your resume, not for your family.

Speaker B

Just for the you that's still becoming.

Speaker A

Take the class, book the trip, buy the bright lipstick.

Speaker A

If not now, then when?

Speaker A

All right, before we close out, here are your official Becoming Series permission slips.

Speaker A

You have permission to wear whatever makes.

Speaker B

You feel good to brunch.

Speaker A

You have permission to take a nap and not apologize for it.

Speaker A

You have permission to not answer the phone just because it rings.

Speaker A

You have permission to say, that's not for me.

Speaker B

You have permission to be the main character in your own story.

Speaker A

And most of all, you have permission to stop answering to labels that no longer fit.

Speaker A

Here's an affirmation.

Speaker A

Say it with me.

Speaker A

Listen to it, write it down, and say it later.

Speaker A

I don't owe anyone the smaller version of myself.

Speaker A

I am not too much.

Speaker A

I am just enough.

Speaker B

And I no longer answer to who.

Speaker A

They needed me to be.

Speaker B

So as we close out the Becoming.

Speaker A

Series, I want to remind you, you.

Speaker B

Are not here to shrink.

Speaker A

You are not here to be convenient.

Speaker B

You are not here to live up.

Speaker A

To someone else's idea of who you.

Speaker B

Were supposed to be.

Speaker A

You are here to shine.

Speaker A

You're here to evolve.

Speaker A

And you're here to become.

Speaker A

So the next time someone tries to hand you an old label, smile, pause and think to yourself, I don't have to answer to that anymore.

Speaker A

If this series has spoken to your spirit, I'd love to hear from you.

Speaker A

Send me a message, drop a comment.

Speaker B

Or share your own.

Speaker A

I don't answer to that anymore moment with me.

Speaker A

I just might feature it in a future episode.

Speaker B

And if you know a woman who's.

Speaker A

Still figuring out who she's becoming, then send this episode and share the series with her.

Speaker A

Let's start the conversation.
