Speaker AEric G.
Speaker AWelcome to the around the House show, the next generation of home improvement.
Speaker AI'm Eric G.
Speaker AThanks for joining me today.
Speaker AThis is our midweek update.
Speaker AThis is the stuff.
Speaker AOf course, it didn't make it into last weekend's show and isn't going to make it into this weekend show.
Speaker AAnd I wanted to talk about a few different things.
Speaker AFirst off, this is always brought to you by our friends at Monument Grills.
Speaker ACheck them out@monument grills.com well, today I wanted to talk about a few things.
Speaker AI wanted to do a quick follow up over last weekend show.
Speaker AAnd I tell you what, that one was a little controversial, but I love it.
Speaker AWe've had a lot of people tuning in, even new people tuning in.
Speaker AAnd I really wanted to help out those inventors, those people that I see every year at the National Hardware show, the people that create things for your homes and the battles that they have trying to get those dreams, those products.
Speaker AThey said if only I could have something that would do this.
Speaker AWe all have thought about ways people have invented stuff and you know, the thing is, is these people fight a big battle and I want to help those people out.
Speaker ASo I thought, you know, so let's jump in and talk about the flippy pill a little bit.
Speaker AAnd that really took off this weekend.
Speaker ASo I really enjoyed it.
Speaker AIf you missed that episode, take a look at it.
Speaker AI had a lot of great comments.
Speaker AI had one comment that said that, you know, it was too negative, but you know something, sometimes life is negative.
Speaker AWe always try to stay positive here on around the House show.
Speaker ABut you know something, this is something that when we tell a story, I don't try to put the positive spin on it.
Speaker AI want to tell the story.
Speaker AAnd we told that story.
Speaker ANow I know there's a bunch going on with it and there'll probably be an update in the future.
Speaker ABut for now, Juliet Facet is out there, you know, being the, you know, female owned, business owner, inventor, taking on these big huge companies that had, you know, as she said, taken her patents, copied them and made millions off it.
Speaker ASo I like to be able to support people like that and tell a story that can go out and, you know, give you Some things to learn from if you're going to invent something or if you've got family members.
Speaker AThis is just an interesting one in consumer products, consumer sales and how stuff goes to market.
Speaker ASo take a look at that one on the podcast.
Speaker AThat is, let's see, that is episode 1963.
Speaker ASo you can take a look at that on your favorite podcast player.
Speaker AAnd that was a fun one.
Speaker AWell, today I wanted to talk about something and it's, and it's being reminded by my drive down the road in front of my house.
Speaker ASo we have in my neighborhood builders that are coming in, buying up the houses and taking a four, five, six, not really four, five, six, seven thousand dollar house, tearing them down and putting a two million dollar house on it.
Speaker ANow this one was probably the most deserving of all of them because it was just a mid century home that was not a good mid century home and it had an addition or it was just poorly designed, was not pretty.
Speaker ASo they're putting a big, you know what they call McMansion on it and I get it, it's waterfront though.
Speaker AIt's down the street, it's on the lake.
Speaker AOne of the best pieces of property out there.
Speaker ABut the problem is as I'm watching them build it and you know how this goes, that builder has missed flashing day and they're doing the absolute minimum around the windows, doors going in.
Speaker AI can see it, I drive past it.
Speaker AThey got two different types of Tyvek wrap.
Speaker AThey have a builder version and they have a, you know, they're just stapling around the windows.
Speaker AThey're not doing any of the flexible flashings that I would recommend.
Speaker AThat is current technology.
Speaker AThose windows are getting done like it's 1995.
Speaker AAnd I feel bad for somebody buying a $2 million, 3 million dollar house that has 1995 flashing technology going in there.
Speaker AI don't see any tape in that thing at all.
Speaker AThey've cut out little pieces, wrapped the windows and then what they'll do is they'll just staple up more around the house of the house wrap.
Speaker AThey're not going to tape anything.
Speaker AI've seen this happen down the road last year and it's really sad to see that because an extra couple hours of work and that house would have been flashed correctly and it would have been built correctly.
Speaker ABut what I'm seeing over there, I'll take some pictures, I'll run over there today and I'll put it up on around the house online.com actually I'll put it on Facebook, that'll be the best.
Speaker AI'll put it up on Facebook and go, huh, missing flashing day.
Speaker APlease comment.
Speaker AAnd you can see that.
Speaker ASo take a look at that a little bit later today on Wednesday.
Speaker ABut that really reminded me of what I'm seeing out there.
Speaker AIf you're building a new house, please pay an independent inspector.
Speaker AIt's not going to cost you that much to go through and look at rough in foundation, pre drywall, post drywall.
Speaker APay the expert to walk around and make sure that everything is done correctly and make sure those steps for that inspector are part of the process.
Speaker ABecause building code doesn't cover a lot of this.
Speaker ABuilding code really fails on keeping up with technology and you want this stuff done right so you're not back in there seven years later tearing out windows and doors, putting them in, around putting them in the right way.
Speaker ASo take the time to do that now.
Speaker AThere are a few things I can think of three offhand and please comment when I post this up on our Facebook around the house.
Speaker ATake a look at this because I want to get your take.
Speaker AThere are three things that come to mind that are when you buy a high quality product that the installation is almost more important than the product itself.
Speaker AThat's going to be windows and doors.
Speaker AYou can buy the most beautiful windows and doors and if you didn't flash it correctly in most of the country, you will have so much damage that those windows and doors will not be operating correctly.
Speaker AYou didn't flash it right.
Speaker ASo water and moisture is getting around, air getting around, so they're leaking.
Speaker AThe next one that I have is your H vac system.
Speaker AYou can buy a bottom of the line system which is still good.
Speaker AHave it installed correctly and it's going to work great.
Speaker AYou can buy a top of the line system, all the latest, greatest, and they didn't size it correctly, they didn't install it correctly and it's a garbage system.
Speaker AThe other one I have is roofing.
Speaker AYou can buy the highest quality roof and if that roofer doesn't know what's going on, it doesn't matter.
Speaker ASo jump over on our Facebook page and take a look.
Speaker AComment on this.
Speaker AWhat is, what are the things that you're thinking about out there that the install is almost more important?
Speaker AAnd I'll put one more over here.
Speaker ATile.
Speaker ATile is another one of those where the install is more important than the tile itself.
Speaker ASo think about that a little bit.
Speaker AWhat do you think about that?
Speaker ASo feel free to make a comment over at our Facebook page.
