Ghost Randy Black The story of Rahab did not end when she hid the spies on her rooftop
Speaker 2 00:01:08
Her act of courage and faith led to a new chapter in her life, one that demonstrates God's power to redeem and to restore.
Speaker 2 00:01:17
In Joshua chapter 6, verses 22 through 25, we see Rahab delivered from destruction.
Speaker 2 00:01:23
And in Matthew 1, verse 5, we see her honored in the very genealogy of Christ.
Speaker 2 00:01:30
Rahab's journey reminds us that God's grace is not limited by our past or by where we come from.
Speaker 2 00:01:36
Instead, he delights in rewriting broken stories and weaving them into his greater plan of salvation.
Speaker 2 00:01:45
As we do each week, let's open up our show with a word of prayer.
Speaker 2 00:01:51
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the story of Rahab and the powerful reminder of your redeeming love
Speaker 2 00:01:58
As we study her life, help us to see how you work through imperfect people to accomplish your perfect plan
Speaker 2 00:02:06
Teach us to trust in your promises, to walk in obedience, and to rest in the truth that no one is beyond your grace.
Speaker 2 00:02:14
Guide us now as we open your word and may this lesson, this episode today, shape our hearts to walk more closely with you.
Speaker 2 00:02:24
In the name of your Son Jesus, we pray.
Speaker 2 00:02:27
Amen.
Speaker 2 00:02:30
When the walls of Jericho came crashing down, destruction swept through the city.
Speaker 2 00:02:36
Yet, in the midst of judgment, there was a place of mercy
Speaker 2 00:02:42
Joshua instructed the spies to honor their oath to Rahab.
Speaker 2 00:02:46
Scripture tells us, so the young men who had been spies went in and brought Rahab out.
Speaker 2 00:02:53
along with her father, her mother, her brothers, and all she had.
Speaker 2 00:02:58
However, Rahab the prostitute, her father's household, and all she had, Joshua spared
Speaker 2 00:03:06
And she has lived in the midst of Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
Speaker 2 00:03:17
What an incredible picture of redemption.
Speaker 2 00:03:21
While Jericho fell under God's judgment, Rahab and her household were spared
Speaker 2 00:03:30
Her faith set her apart.
Speaker 2 00:03:34
And her obedience led to her family's salvation
Speaker 2 00:03:38
The scarlet cord in her window had served as a sign, a mark of God's promise.
Speaker 2 00:03:46
Just as the blood of the Lamb had covered the doorposts in Egypt during the Passover
Speaker 2 00:03:52
Rahab's home was marked for deliverance.
Speaker 2 00:03:55
This symbol points forward to Christ, whose blood secures salvation for all who believe
Speaker 2 00:04:03
Rahab's story did not end with her rescue.
Speaker 2 00:04:07
Matthew records her name in the genealogy of Jesus
Speaker 2 00:04:11
Salmon fathered Boaz by Rahab, Boaz fathered Obed by Ruth, and Obed fathered Jesse.
Speaker 2 00:04:19
Rahab, once known as a prostitute and an outsider, became part of the line through which the Messiah would come
Speaker 2 00:04:28
This tells us something remarkable about the heart of God.
Speaker 2 00:04:32
He not only redeems sinners, but he also places them in positions of honor in his redemptive plan.
Speaker 2 00:04:41
Hebrews chapter 11, verse 31 reminds us: By faith, Rahab the prostitute did not perish along with those who were disobedient.
Speaker 2 00:04:51
after she had welcomed the spies in peace.
Speaker 2 00:04:56
The New Testament consistently points to Rahab as an example of faith
Speaker 2 00:05:02
Her past did not define her.
Speaker 2 00:05:04
Her faith did.
Speaker 2 00:05:06
For us today, this truth offers hope.
Speaker 2 00:05:10
No matter what lies in our background
Speaker 2 00:05:12
God's grace is greater and faith in him opens the door to redemption
Speaker 2 00:05:22
We do have some key takeaways from our scripture selections here today.
Speaker 2 00:05:28
Rahab's story first reminds us that faith leads to redemption.
Speaker 2 00:05:33
She believed in the God of Israel, and that belief set her apart from those who rejected him.
Speaker 2 00:05:41
In the same way,
Speaker 2 00:05:43
Our faith in Christ rescues us from sin and gives us new life.
Speaker 2 00:05:48
Redemption is not earned by status, works, or reputation
Speaker 2 00:05:54
It comes through simple, courageous trust in the Lord.
Speaker 2 00:06:00
We also see that God is faithful to keep his promises.
Speaker 2 00:06:04
The scarlet cord hanging from Rahab's window was not just a signal for the spies.
Speaker 2 00:06:10
It was a visible reminder that God would do exactly what he said.
Speaker 2 00:06:17
In our own walk, when doubts or fears arise, we can hold firmly to the truth that God's promises will never fail
Speaker 2 00:06:29
Another important truth is that God's grace extends beyond the boundaries.
Speaker 2 00:06:35
Rahab was a Canaanite woman, an outsider.
Speaker 2 00:06:40
And by the standards of Israel, she would have seemed the least likely candidate for God's favor.
Speaker 2 00:06:46
Yet he welcomed her into his people, and even placed her in the family line of the Messiah.
Speaker 2 00:06:54
This challenges us to see others through the lens of grace rather than judgment, knowing that God's mercy is wide enough for all
Speaker 2 00:07:08
Finally, Rahab's faith shows us the influence of obedience on others.
Speaker 2 00:07:15
Her household was spared because of her courage to trust God.
Speaker 2 00:07:20
Our decisions of faith and obedience do not remain isolated.
Speaker 2 00:07:25
They touch the lives of those around us
Speaker 2 00:07:28
When we live boldly for Christ, our witness has the power to encourage, to inspire, and to even lead others to salvation
Speaker 2 00:07:41
As we reflect on Rahab's story, we are strongly reminded that God's redemption is not limited by our failures or our past.
Speaker 2 00:07:52
She was known as a prostitute, but God renamed her by her faith.
Speaker 2 00:07:58
This truth gives us hope when we feel disqualified or unworthy.
Speaker 2 00:08:02
For God delights in transforming lives and writing new stories of grace.
Speaker 2 00:08:09
Her courage challenges us to consider how we are living out our faith.
Speaker 2 00:08:15
Rahab did not simply believe in the God of Israel in her heart.
Speaker 2 00:08:19
She demonstrated her faith by risking her life to protect the spies.
Speaker 2 00:08:25
Faith is not passive.
Speaker 2 00:08:28
It requires action.
Speaker 2 00:08:30
Our daily walk with Christ should reflect trust in Him, even when obedience causes us to take bold or costly steps.
Speaker 2 00:08:40
The scarlet cord in Rahab's window points us to the blood of Christ, which marks our lives today
Speaker 2 00:08:48
Just as her home was spared because it bore the sign of God's promise, we are spared because the covering of Jesus' sacrifice
Speaker 2 00:08:59
This should move us to gratitude, humility, and a deeper devotion to the one who has redeemed us
Speaker 2 00:09:07
Finally, Rahab's inclusion in Christ's genealogy reminds us that God delights in using the unlikely.
Speaker 2 00:09:14
Her story assures us.
Speaker 2 00:09:16
that he can take what seems broken or unworthy and weave it into his eternal plan.
Speaker 2 00:09:22
As we walk with him, we can trust that our lives too have purpose and meaning in his hands.
Speaker 2 00:09:32
Before we preview our next episode, let's close out our study of the word in a word of prayer
Speaker 2 00:09:40
Lord, we thank you for the testimony of Rahab and the reminder that your grace is greater than our past.
Speaker 2 00:09:48
Help us to walk in courageous faith, trusting in your promises and obeying your word, even when the cost is high.
Speaker 2 00:09:57
Teach us to see ourselves and others through the lens of redemption, knowing that you delight in using the broken and the unlikely for your glory.
Speaker 2 00:10:07
May our faith be a light to those around us, pointing them toward the salvation that is found only in your Son, Jesus Christ.
Speaker 2 00:10:17
And we pray this in his holy name.
Speaker 2 00:10:20
Amen.
Speaker 2 00:10:24
In Hebrews 11.
Speaker 2 00:10:25
31 and James 2.
Speaker 2 00:10:27
25, Rahab is highlighted as an unlikely hero of faith.
Speaker 2 00:10:33
Someone whose past didn't disqualify her from God's plans.
Speaker 2 00:10:38
Her trust and obedience reminds us that God can work through anyone who chooses to believe
Speaker 2 00:10:44
Join us as we look at how her story challenges us to trust God, no matter our beginnings.
