Speaker AHere's our reading for the day from Luke 8, 4:10 the story of the Seeds as they went from town to town, a lot of people joined in and traveled along.
Speaker AHe addressed them using this story.
Speaker AA farmer went out to sow his seed, and some of it fell on the ground.
Speaker AIt was tramped down and the birds ate it.
Speaker AOther seed fell in the gravel.
Speaker AIt sprouted but withered because it didn't have good roots.
Speaker AOther seed fell in the weeds and the weeds grew with it and strangled it.
Speaker AOther seed fell in rich earth and produced a bumper crop.
Speaker AAre you listening to this?
Speaker AReally listening to this?
Speaker AHis disciples asked, why did you tell this story?
Speaker AAnd he said, you've been given insight into God's kingdom.
Speaker AYou know how it works.
Speaker AThere are others who need stories, but even with stories, some of them aren't going to get it.
Speaker ATheir eyes are open, but they don't see a thing.
Speaker ATheir ears are open, but they don't hear a thing.
Speaker AA powerful passage of scripture here.
Speaker AIt's often known as Jesus's parable of the sower, and we need to find in it wisdom about how transformative movements take root and grow.
Speaker AThis Jesus is telling a story here to a growing group of followers.
Speaker AIt's not just about individual spiritual growth, but about how revolutionary ideas spread and take root in communities.
Speaker ASo let's get into some points to ponder.
Speaker AThere's the politics of storytelling.
Speaker AJesus uses agricultural metaphors accessible to the common people.
Speaker AEverybody understood this.
Speaker AThis was not some academic exercise or theological thing to do.
Speaker AThis challenges how we often gatekeep spiritual wisdom behind academic language or some sort of institutional authority.
Speaker ASo how might we communicate liberation theology in ways that connect to people's lived experiences.
Speaker ASecond point is about systems of suppression.
Speaker AThe seeds faced various obstacles, being trampled, lacking roots, being choked by weeds, and these mirror how dominant systems often suppress movements for change through direct opposition, preventing deep community roots or choking them with consumerism and distraction.
Speaker AHow do we nurture resistance that can survive these type of challenges?
Speaker AOne more point is about collective understanding.
Speaker AWhen Jesus says quote, are you listening?
Speaker AReally listening?
Speaker AHe's challenging surface level engagement.
Speaker AReal understanding comes through collective reflection and action.
Speaker AHow do we create spaces where communities can deeply engage with justice issues and grow together in understanding?
Speaker AHere's an action step for the day.
Speaker APractice what we might call movement gardening.
Speaker AThat is to identify an area justice issue that you care about and research how successful movements have taken root in that particular area.
Speaker AMaybe connect with others who are working on that issue, or create or join some sort of a study action group and then nurture your relationship there.
Speaker ANurture the conditions for long term growth and change.
Speaker ARemember, movements like plants need consistent care and community support.
Speaker AWe'll come back with a closing prayer here in just a minute.
Speaker AI just always want to share with you that we have a resource just for you.
