Hey everybody. Welcome back to another edition of the Daily Bible Podcast. Hello, Thursday. It is Thursday, Thursday, November 6th. It is, yeah. It's a couple people's birthday today. It is a few people's birthday today. Mm-hmm. Yep. Anybody that you wanted to shout out in particular? The first time I see here on my calendar is Heather Pace, which I don't think she listens, but. It's Dr. Lucas Pace's wife from Compass Bible Church av, and also this guy that does hands our church pretty regularly. I see Jeff Mooch. It's his birthday today as well. It is. It's also the Laverdes anniversary today. Happy anniversary Lavertis. Man, we, a couple years ago, if you've been an OG with the podcast, we called out birthdays pretty much every day. Yeah, we did. We don't do that so much anymore. There's too many of you guys. There's a lot. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But we do miss it. I do think about it all the time. When I see someone's birthday, I'm like, oh, it'd be fun to shout them out. But I'm like, we'd be doing that. All the time it would be every podcast. So we appreciate you guys. We think about you we see your birthdays pop up and we think happy thoughts about you. We do think happy thoughts about you. Yeah. Most of you anyway. I guess there's some probably, no, not everybody, but most of you care to share any names on that one. I'm just kidding. I didn't really have anybody in mind, but I thought it'd be funny to say that. Yeah. Yeah, man. So I set up my Christmas tree. It is up. I noticed that. Yeah, like October 15th is what? The date stamp that I saw? Well, that's an incorrect date stamp. Oh, okay. It was it was actually Monday, so of this month. Monday. Wow. That's really early. You know, I heard you and Pastor Mark arguing about Christmas music. Yes. And he argued to keep it sacred and special, and you're like, you know what? All days are alike. Doesn't matter which day it is. I know that you don't. You do it whenever you want. I don't know. I know that you don't buy that because you listened to Christmas music in July. You know, I used to. And I think I'm changing in my older age I feel like there's, and here's the thing, I'm torn because I have to listen to it early. Yeah. 'cause I'm preparing for Christmas. Right. So I've been listening to it already thinking, okay, what songs are we gonna try to do? But I, I do like the idea of saying for this season, however long it is, and for everyone it's different. I'm gonna reserve it. I wanna keep it special. Yeah. And enjoy those things when the season makes the most sense. So I'm not dogmatic about it, but I do think there is something special about keeping it special. Yeah. Well, we are fake tree people now. And so because of that, I remember, I remember that this is a really new development. It is. Because of that, we decided to grab the tree out of our attic. Wow. And we're gonna do it in stages. We don't have all the ornaments up, but we, I thought you meant the tree. No. Like we've only got the base up right now. The base. Yeah. No, but one of my favorite things is coffee By, in, in my Bible reading. Yeah. With the tree lit in the mornings, and I wanna extend that as long as I can. Oh. And so keeping it up until March. No. After Christmas, I'm like, let's take it down. Oh, wow. But beforehand, the anticipation of it, I like having it up there. The difference though with a fake tree is pretty palpable. It's. Because it doesn't smell the same. Yeah, that's true. Even the way that it affects the air around it. I noticed that somehow or another, the tree, because it either absorbs heat or absorbs cold. I forget how it works, but it also creates a vacuum of cold air wherever it's nearby. I remember this 'cause the last time we had a real tree was back in California and the tree made our downstairs colder than what it would normally be. I don't know how that works, but I do know that that's what happened. The smell amazing. Worth every bit of heating that we had to pay. And in California rates, that's a lot if you get a good one. But sometimes they're hit and miss. Like sometimes you get a tree that is just not as potent. It's not as aromatic. That's true. I think there's certain breeds of tree that are especially Yeah, aromatic. And I don't know what they are. Maybe you guys can let us know 'cause. Well, you know what? No. 'cause we're not gonna get one. We have a fake tree. We've been doing it, although this year I will say there are rat holes in our tree box. Oh. So I'm not sure I wanna open it. I might let the kids do it. I'll let them figure it out. Dude, I had to kill multiple rats so far. Have you? Yes. It's awful. It's awful. So here's the thing, we had this rat showing up in our garage. Yeah. And Kristen's like, Hey, there's a rat there. Like, okay, let's get this thing out. And I walked out into the garage. I saw him run and scurry. I'm like, perfect. Let me get this guy outta here. So we found him, we caught him in a dust bin. Is that what that's called? Sure. Dust bin. And then I let him out in the field. Great. He lives, he's happy so long. But then I thought, you know what? I can't have rats in my garage. 'cause then they end up in the house and that's just bad news altogether. Yeah. So I put sticky traps next to the holes in the garage door. Each side had a rat that same day. Oof. Can you believe that? That's crazy. And so these poor guys were moving and wiggling. So I folded them up into the rat sticky trap enough where their whole body was covered by this thing and I disposed of them. I didn't throw them away first. I killed them first. Yeah. And then I disposed of them. Didn't it involve like a five gallon bucket of water or anything? No, I did think about it. Okay. 'cause I was thinking, what's the most humane way? Yeah. To kill these guys. So there's as minimal suffering as possible. And I didn't wanna drown them. We're not gonna call Kelly out. That would be unkind. But drowning a rat does not seem like the. The best way to do it. We're not gonna call Kelly out. That's not fair. That's, yeah. She has no way to respond. So let's not call Kelly out. Which Kelly are we calling out? We're not gonna call Kelly Smith out. Okay. She's not helpful. That's not, no, we don't want people to know this about her. No, but I took a bat and I Okay. I disposed of them both. Yeah. And so I made sure. Yeah. Which was not fun. Yeah. I made sure and then I put them in the trash and now we have two more sticky traps up. And so far today we haven't had any, but man they've been coming out. Yeah. There's a lot of them. And as the weather turns, this is the time of year that they try to find shelter that's warm, and so they're gonna be seeking houses and, yep, yep. Yeah, I don't think, yeah, I don't know about rats in the new Earth. Maybe they won't in invest our houses or our dwellings, whatever those happen to be. Right. Maybe they'll play nice with them. Yeah. Who knows? Yeah. Well, I know you mentioned your neighbor behind you having their tree up, so I just thought, you know, I'll try to compete. I'll try to, do you remember the date? I think it was early October. It was early. Yeah, it was like the first week of October. Yeah. I should put it in my calendar and find out. When they did it, he was ambitious. For sure. Well, let's get into our DBR today. We have a long reading one chapter today, in fact, the next handful of days, only one chapter. So, maybe a good time to jump in and read some more. If you've got an epistle, maybe you wanna read first Peter through as we're studying that together on Sunday mornings. Be a great time to do that. Dive in and read a little bit more there, but yeah. Mark Chapter 13 is a lot of the same ground that we just covered yesterday in Luke chapter 20 and 21, specifically 21. You're gonna get the prediction of the destruction of the temple again, 70 ad I think there is the initial fulfillment of that. And then you're gonna get him talking about the signs of the times, the signs in the end. And this is brought on by the. The comment about the destruction of the temple the disciples wanna know when this is gonna be. And so he then says, you know what? Don't be taken captive by some people that say it's happened already. But watch the watch for the signs. Watch for the things that are gonna take place. And like we talked about yesterday, there's gonna be a lot of things that we've already seen, that we still see today. So we might be tempted to read a chapter like this and go, okay the wars, the famines, the earthquakes, we're seeing all these things take place. So it must be that Jesus could come back at any second. And yeah, he could come back at any second. But Jesus is also clear here to say this is not the end yet. This is the beginning of the birth pains. So the creation, Romans eight, groaning. This is creation in labor, so to speak, to, to produce the end. And this is a weird twist on childbirth because you don't often think of the end in a or a baby's birth in a bad way. But this is the end in the judgment that's gonna come. And the second coming of Christ for the church, for Christ's a good thing, but for the rest of the world, a bad thing for sure. It wasn't too long ago that we had a lot of people saying the Rapture's next Tuesday at 4:00 PM or whatever it was, these people were really sincere. Explain this and explain what our response should be when we see these things. I saw it all over my ex feed. I saw it on TikTok. I saw people posting it on Instagram, doing their stories, and people were I chuckled a little bit. I made fun of them a little bit in my heart. 'cause I said, Jesus told us that no one knows. But these guys and some girls were very adamant hits coming. And you saw their sincerity there. There was a clear passion for. The gospel, like Jesus is coming back. You know, you gotta be ready. Are you ready to meet your maker? People that were giving in passion, please. So put that context on top of this passage here and help us to figure out how to respond when the next batch of people say the rapture is next week or next month or whatever. Yeah, I think there's two categories here of those people that we're doing that. The category one are those that were influenced by somebody who said that, some teacher who said that and they bought into it. And so they are impressionable. They are maybe not overly discerning and they bought into it, and so they were swept up to then go and perpetuate the same thing, to jump on social media to say, Hey, this is happening. The rapture's coming, and I think this, all the signs are there and so this person said this, so I think they're right. And so you need to be ready. Here's the rapture's coming. I think I give more of a pass to that group. The other group that are out there are those that are perpetuating this to begin with. The ones that are the ones that are generating this. And as goodwill as they may be towards the urgency of getting right with Christ I think part of the problem is they miss what we read yesterday and what we're gonna read again today and in verse 32 of Mark, concerning that day or hour. No one knows, not even the son knows. And so Jesus's mission have questions about that too, by the way. Go ahead. Yeah. Jesus' mission to the church was not, hey, go and figure out when I'm gonna come back. Jesus' mission of the church was, be ready for my return at any minute. And while you're waiting, go and make disciples. And that's I think what these people, well-intentioned or not kind of got backwards. They said, well, we will make disciples, but really we wanna focus on when is Jesus coming back and we think he's coming back. Now. Yeah. So he says here in verse five, see that no one leads you astray. How much responsibility does a Christian bear to make sure that they're not captured by things like the rapture or some other weird, strange doctrine that emerges? Yeah. Paul speaks to that too, right? When he talks about not being captured by empty to sea and in philosophy. How do we do that? We don't know when people are telling us the truth, and maybe we don't know our Bible well enough to know for sure is. Is that the right thing? Right. Have I been deceived all this time? And that's why being a part of a good church is such an important thing. Being a part of a community. We talk about doing theology and community together all the time, that we're not doing theology with our favorite part podcast voice, that we don't know this person or a YouTube person or somebody Discord community. Totally. Yeah. You need to trust your, the local church that God has put you in. And I would give this caveat, if you're out there and you're going, I don't think I trust the church that God has put me in, man, that's a major red flag that needs to be worked through, at minimum a meeting with your pastors to sit down and talk through things to say, Hey I'm struggling. Here's my things. Because you need to be in a church where you can trust your leadership and you need to be in a church where you can trust your brothers and sisters in Christ to do things like theology in concert together, to show up at your community group and say, Hey, did you guys see this reel talking about the rapture that's gonna happen and they've got a date predicted? What do you think about that? And to have your community group leader and some brothers and sisters in Christ say, Hey, you know what? We should be ready for it at any time, but. Mark 13 says, we nobody knows the day or hour, and so let's be reminded of that. Oh, you know what? That's super helpful. Thanks. You're right on that. That's how we can be protected from being led astray is as we do these things together in community, what a good reminder for us to be in community. We should be a part of a community group and doing life with other Christians, but on top of that, we're doing life together around. Centralized around the word of God. This should be part of our conversations. We should be talking about this. We should be memorizing and meditating upon it because we want our conversation to be word filled so that we can be guarded against some of these errors. And I do feel for it. I'm with you. I feel for some of these people that have been duped by people that should know better. Yeah. But they don't because they're largely biblically illiterate. And one of the ways that we help with that is by talking to people about the Bible and about things like this, which I know for a lot of people is really interesting. Yeah. Yeah. From here he does encourage us to, to be on guard or as disciples to be on guard. He makes a statement, he says, the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations before any of this happens. And so that's fascinating to even think through the implications of that. What does that look like? Has that happened yet? I remember being younger and kind of not wanting Jesus to come back yet, and there was some comfort to me in that again, of going, okay, well. Surely the gospel hasn't been translated into every language out there. So we got some time. I'll be able to grow up and get a driver's license first or get married or whatever. Yeah. But man it's interesting when you consider the advent of social media, you consider the advent of the internet that the access, ai, ai, ai translates everything really well. Yeah. We're not far from this being something that's a reality. Well, even then, there were people that were arguing before the advent of AI and things that are especially helpful that the gospel had reached every nation tribe and tongue. That's different, right? Because we still have unreached peoples, but that the gospel had gone all across the globe and that the warning that Jesus gives, that when this happens, you know that it's coming soon. We should have been, we should be ready because those things have taken place. Yeah, I think there's a fair argument to be made about that. Yeah. Yeah. He goes on and talks about persecution and then the scene shifts forward in verse 14 when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be, let the reader understand. And then he begins to shift and talk about again, the end times this tribulation period that's taken place here. Okay. You gotta stop right there and explain to us. Again, slowly this time. Slowly. What is the, because you were saying the abomination of desolation had something to do with the Dodgers on Sunday, so we're not sure what you mean by this. Can you explain what does verse 14 mean and did Mark say, let the reader understand? Did Jesus say, let the reader understand what's happening here and how do we understand this? Yeah, so let's start with the abomination of desolation. We go back to actually Daniel. On this one because this actually took place under the reign of Anki epiphanies the first time. And that was when Anki epiphanies sacrificed a pig on the Jewish altar and also set up what many believe was a statue of a Zeus in the temple. And so this was the desecration. And anytime you think desecration you think of that, you think of something that is, is brought to shame. You think of something that is, is dishonored and that's what. Anti his epiphanies did in the Jewish temple. And that was the foreshadowing of the greater reality of that, which is what Mark is referring to, what Jesus is referring to here. And that is the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be. And so I think this is a reference specifically to the person of the antichrist who is going to come to power during the tribulation period. Now I think he's going to do an act, and this appears to be the time that is gonna be marked at the three and a half year mark of the tribulation period. Where he breaks the treaty with Israel. So the first three and a half years of the seven years of tribulation are gonna be marked by peace with Israel and the antichrist, but then this is gonna happen, the abomination of desolation, whether that's sacrificing a pig or setting up a statue, declaring himself, God declaring himself God, that is going to be the moment where the antichrist severs that. Truce with Israel. And this is the time when that's why Jesus goes on from here to say, Hey, you guys need to flee. You need to run Woe to those that are nursery during this time. This is gonna be a bad season. And I think Mark is the one that puts in the editorial comment there. Let the reader understand to kind of draw attention to the fact that, hey, understand what we're, we've shifted here. We're not talking about the same context. This is, time that's yet in the future. And so kind of pay attention to what we're talking about here. So Daniel's the first one to mention the abomination of desolation. Daniel chapter nine, I believe, and we see it fulfilled in Antiochus epiphanies. He was about one 60 something bc So this is before Jesus Christ came on the scene. There is another fulfillment in the desecration of the temple, 80 70 that we're talking about. Yep. And we're still saying there's another future. Desecration that's coming during the tribulation. Right. So there's three fulfillments of this, right? Is that right? Okay. So what we see then, it looks like scripture when it gives a prophecy, doesn't necessarily mean that it's only gonna be fulfilled once, that there could be recurring fulfillments of that prophecy leading to an ultimate fulfillment of that prophecy, right? Yep. Kind of like what we see in some of the Isaiah passages. Where for to us, a son of a son has given to us. A child is born Isaiah's son, prophesied the prophesy of is, what's his name? Maha Al Al ish. That guy? Yes. Isaiah's son. Yes. He was the one who was delivered to the virgin. But we know that it pointed to the ultimate. Son delivered to a virgin, which would of course be Jesus Christ. So that makes biblical prophecy a little more challenging than just saying, oh yeah, this speaks to December 14th, 1982. This is gonna happen. Right? And then this person's gonna show up a lot. Unlike, what's that guy who does the prophecies that people were like, oh, he does Harold Camping? Well, no, not him. The secular guy is, does it start with a Z? He does. It's not Xtra. I keep on thinking thus spoke Z Thra. It's a guy that everybody knows and they refer to this guy as being the one who's doing modern day prophecies. He's been debunked, but it's He does specific prophecies. Yeah. Or at least more specific than what we might be used to when it comes to scripture. Yeah. I'm gonna look it up while you're talking. Okay. From here he does talk about these signs of the times and the things that are going to happen during that time. If you look at verse 19 from those No Radus Nostradamus, that was close. Not a z Yeah, but it's in the alphabet where Z is contained. Z is a silent, it's ZNOS. That's right. Verse 19. For in those days, there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of creation that God created until now. And never will be. And so words, phrases like that show us that we can't look in history past to find an example of this because we haven't seen this. This is not yet happened. And he makes the point. He says, if the Lord had not cut short these days for the sake of the elect, the elect that he's referring to are the tribulation, saints the tribulation believers that are still on earth during the tribulation. Those that get saved after the rapture. This time is gonna be cut short for their sake. And this is just a it's a bad time. But Jesus' message to us is, Hey, you need to be ready. You did say you had another question though about the statement that Jesus made concerning the day or our no one no is not even the son. How is that possible? If Jesus is God in the flesh, which we argue ad nauseum will never deny that, how is it possible that Jesus could not know something? I think this is part of his kenosis from Philippians chapter two, which is the veiling of his full glory with the fullness of his humanity. Okay, put that in layman's terms. So I think this is what is kenosis? This is the humanity of Jesus that we're seeing here. I think this is reference referential to his time on earth. During his life in earthly ministry. I don't know that this still applies to where he is seated at the right hand of the father currently. I think now in his exalted form, I think he's still waiting for the father, but I wouldn't say that he doesn't know the day or the hour. It's possible that he's still submitting to the father's will at this point in time and choosing, as part of that to remain just submissive to that, to wait for that. Acknowledgement from the father to say, now's the time to go. But I would say Philippians two, he's been given the name that's above every name and he's been exalted to the right hand of the father. I think that's a restoration of his place of full glory. And I think with that comes the dropping of that veiling. That was his frail humanity when he was here on Earth. So we talk about Jesus being truly God and truly, man. He's both of those things simultaneously. If he's never not God, is it then that he chooses not to know something? Yes. Because he can't not know. Right. He's God. Right. So he has to then in some way say, I'm just gonna not access that information. Is that what you're suggesting? Right. Okay. Because of that perfect submission of the Father. Yeah. That's strange. That's hard for us to conceive of, given that we're not fully gut or. Yeah. Anything like that. Sure. We're fully man, for sure. But that's really hard to wrap your mind around. But that I do think that points to the mis, the mystery and the majesty of what Jesus did. Yeah. It is so unique. It is so beautiful, so incredible that it is hard to understand things like this. For someone who, like ourselves, who only know what it is to be a man and not God, this doesn't make sense, and that's okay. It shouldn't make sense to you because no one knows what this is like. Only Jesus. And so we take him at his word and he doesn't know, but as the son of God, he could figure it out. Yeah. He could just access that information he just chooses not to. Yeah. Which, okay, the kenosis is Philippians chapter two. That's the Greek word behind the phrase emptied himself. Yeah. He emptied himself out. And so when people speak about the kenosis of Jesus, we're trying to say, what does that mean that he emptied himself? In what sense did he empty himself? And so what would you say to that? In what sense did Jesus. Empty himself. Well, it's actually answered for us in Philippians chapter two in that same passage, because it says in verse six, who though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God, a thing with to be grasped. But verse seven, emptied himself, there's kenosis, and then he says this by taking the form of a servant being born in the likeness of men. So it was an emptying through edition. In the sense that he emptied himself by adding full humanity to his full deity, or adding true humanity is true, deity. And so that's why I used the phrase veiling. He veiled the fullness of his glory with the fullness of his humanity, the trueness of his deity, with the trueness of his humanity. So taking that on as how he emptied himself. Not that he became less than God, but that he willingly set aside some of his divine prerogatives in order to submit himself to the father's will and identify with us as human beings. Setting aside his divine prerogatives, meaning he's choosing not to exercise some of those attributes that he. He could have, right? At any point in time, he could have said, I'm just gonna do A, B, C, and D. Right. He just chooses not to, which again, we don't have a point of reference for. Right. I guess you could say there's a small reference when you say, when you're disciplining your kids, I'm gonna choose to do this versus that, but even that doesn't quite capture the significance of what we're seeing here. Jesus chooses not to exercise divinity in all cases, but as one listener, astutely asked us about those moments, then when he's walking on water or when he's, yeah. Reading the hearts and minds of men, is that him accessing divinity or is that simply him resting on the power of the spirit? And I think it's a mixture of both. I think there's moments of his. True deity on display. And I think he's doing that intentionally. I think he's pulling the curtain back to reveal that if John chapter two the water to wine, I think when it says that he was manifesting his glory, I think there's moments where it's like, this is not doing this. So that when you're at home, if you rely on the spirit enough, you're gonna be able to turn your water to wine. I was trying this weekend. Yeah, it did not work. But I'm doing this to show you that I'm Lord Over creation. I'm doing this to show you who I am. Transfiguration being another one. Exactly. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Maybe it's like if Michael Jordan during his prime were to go play basketball with you, and he was like, okay, I'll play one-on-one with you, but I'm not gonna dunk and I'm gonna shoot with my left hand and I'm going to, you know, he's veiling some of the fullness of visibilities there. He could, and he at any time do whatever he wanted to do out there, but he's gonna say, you know what? I'm gonna condescend to you and I'll play more on your level. So even in his condescension and his veiling, there were still points where he decided, I'm gonna show a little bit of this. Yeah. I still choose to exercise some of those divine prerogatives, but not apart from submission to the father and not apart from the empowerment of the spirit. So even then we could say. He's still choosing to play with his right hand tied behind his back. Right. He's allowing himself to be led by the Father, by the power of the spirit. Yeah. Fascinating. Yeah. Well, let's pray and then we're done with this episode. Father, we are thankful for that mystery of the kenosis of Jesus for us. And we thank you for that being part of your plan that you would save us. And we thank you that he came to identify with us as truly God and truly man, and we just. Are forever in awe of that, and I think we'll spend eternity forever in awe of that. And so I pray that we would live well and live for him as we live the rest of our days today. In Jesus name, amen. Amen. Keep in your Bibles and tune in again tomorrow for another edition of the Daily Bible Podcast. See you then folks. Bye.
