Speaker AWelcome to the ATA Nation Podcast.
Speaker AWelcome back to the ATA Nation Podcast.
Speaker AWe are thrilled to have you here for episode 195.
Speaker AThat means five episodes left till our 200th episode.
Speaker AAh, gotta plan a live one.
Speaker AYou gotta work on it.
Speaker ASo much going on.
Speaker AGuys.
Speaker AI just heard.
Speaker ADid you guys hear in the ambassador corner this last week that Spring Nationals.
Speaker AHuge turnout.
Speaker AWe're gonna have a huge turnout.
Speaker ASo many people preregistered.
Speaker AIt's gonna be amazing.
Speaker ASo guys, if you hear this, as soon as it drops, there is still time to jump on late registration because it closes at noon Central standard time, which is going to be like half hour if you listen to this right away.
Speaker ABut if you don't, you can always.
Speaker AI think they'll have sign up at your registration at the event then too, if you.
Speaker AIf you decide you want to make it.
Speaker ABut a couple other things before we get to our athlete of the week that I wanted to make sure we're hitting about St. Louis 1.
Speaker AJust an amazing place there.
Speaker AThe.
Speaker AMy kids are so excited about going to this museum.
Speaker AOh, and I forgot the name of it already.
Speaker AUm, but it's going to be pretty awesome.
Speaker AI hope I get time to go with them.
Speaker AIt would be amazing.
Speaker ABut we've got midterm and rank testing.
Speaker AThere is late registration for that if you still want to go.
Speaker AYou.
Speaker AWe've got the team tryouts.
Speaker AWe've got the Blades to the max.
Speaker AWe've got the.
Speaker AWhat's the.
Speaker AThe one called.
Speaker AI'm going to scroll through here and double check to make sure I know what it's called.
Speaker AIt's.
Speaker AIt's the sparring with swords 1.
Speaker AThat one looks awesome as well, guys.
Speaker AOkay, while I'm scrolling real quick, did you see the shirts for the 2026 Athlete Development Camp?
Speaker AOh, pretty nice.
Speaker AI am liking the shirts this year for athlete development camp, so don't miss out on that.
Speaker AYou only have a little bit more time to register for athlete development camp as well, so don't miss on that.
Speaker AOh, Clash of the Blades.
Speaker AClash of the Blades.
Speaker AThis is the gumdo combat, guys.
Speaker ASo much cool stuff's going on at Spring national, so do not miss out.
Speaker AThere's still time to get in.
Speaker AYou don't want to miss it.
Speaker AI know a couple people have had some things come up and, you know, things change.
Speaker ASo we want to make sure we get you registered for that if you missed out.
Speaker AI'm thrilled St. Louis is going to be an awesome time if you're there and you listen to the podcast.
Speaker AMake sure you stop me and say hello.
Speaker AI might be carrying around my recorder so I can get couple of little clips from people.
Speaker AI tried different events, I tried to get some different interviews and just there's so much going on I have to judge.
Speaker AI have seminars that I want to take.
Speaker AThere's other.
Speaker AYou know, I did a great interview with a young man that was fantastic that I can't use because it ended up being too loud because we did it in the main facility.
Speaker ASo I just keep editing things and trying and seeing what we can do.
Speaker ABut it's going to be great.
Speaker ALet's go to our awesome athlete of the week, ATA Nation.
Speaker ASuper excited to bring to you our athlete of the week this week.
Speaker AAnd we have an awesome international athlete this week.
Speaker ASo could you introduce yourself for us, ma'?
Speaker AAm?
Speaker BYes, I'm Lianry to 4th degree black belt from Pretoria, South Africa.
Speaker AVery cool.
Speaker ASouth Africa in the house.
Speaker ASo here's the question.
Speaker AHow'd you get started in martial arts?
Speaker BI actually started doing Kung fu when we were overseas in Singapore for a while.
Speaker BMy dad had a job there and when we moved back to South Africa, I started with combat taekwondo.
Speaker BBut eventually I did found the ATA and it made me grow even more than the combat taekwondo.
Speaker BSo I stayed.
Speaker AExcellent.
Speaker AWhat you know, ata, we're everywhere, all over the globe.
Speaker ASouth Africa has continued to grow.
Speaker ATell ATA Nation a little bit about how South Africa's ATA community is.
Speaker AYou know what, what it's like to be part of the, the community there in South Africa.
Speaker BIt's very great.
Speaker BWe're a very close knit community.
Speaker BEverybody supports one another.
Speaker BWe had a competition in Sukuna last week and it was really nice.
Speaker BEverybody enjoyed it a lot.
Speaker BIt was a very friendly atmosphere, very competitive, but still everybody enjoyed themselves.
Speaker BThe kids did awesome.
Speaker BI myself had a max team that competed against me.
Speaker BSo it was really great and very fun.
Speaker AVery cool.
Speaker AAnd you guys now have a, what's the, what's the term?
Speaker AAn A plus tournament down in South Africa, right?
Speaker BYes, it's the African cup challenge.
Speaker BI'm not 100 on the wording, but yes, we are very excited to get that level up on the competition.
Speaker BSo we are hoping some international guests will come this year to our tournament.
Speaker AYeah, that would be awesome.
Speaker AWhat, what are you actively teaching in schools?
Speaker AYou own a school, you run a club.
Speaker AWhat is your involvement in that side of things?
Speaker BI currently teaching at traditional Taekwondo academy with Annika Fuljun.
Speaker BI run mostly the MAX program there.
Speaker BI adapted it so we can.
Speaker BIt can work better with our schools as we do have Tigris actually also doing the MAX program.
Speaker BSo it's.
Speaker BThat's what I am busy with at the moment.
Speaker AThat's awesome.
Speaker AHow cool.
Speaker AI love that.
Speaker AOkay, so you said you had a competition last weekend.
Speaker AFor you, is competition something that is a.
Speaker AA big part of why you like martial arts?
Speaker AIs what, what do you like to compete in those kind of things?
Speaker BI think it's a big part of doing martial arts because it allows you to taste your skills against other people.
Speaker BI really love competing against others.
Speaker BWe are quite small in South Africa so my division only has five people.
Speaker BBut for a long time it was only me.
Speaker BSo I competed against myself.
Speaker BBut now it's five people.
Speaker BWe are enjoying the competition.
Speaker BWe love competing against each other.
Speaker BI really like the team events because then the crowd's all hyped up.
Speaker BEverybody's cheering, everybody's.
Speaker BIt's loud and you get to see your fellow students competing with you.
Speaker BYou're cheering them on.
Speaker BThey are cheering you on.
Speaker BIt's just a great atmosphere.
Speaker AYes, ma', am.
Speaker AI totally agree.
Speaker AThe team stuff has just taken the excitement level to a.
Speaker AA whole new plane and it's.
Speaker AIt's great to be part of those.
Speaker AWhat kind of goals do you have for your future training competition?
Speaker AJust your martial arts career?
Speaker BFor my instruction goals, I really would like to work better with the Tigers.
Speaker BThey are the group I lease connect with.
Speaker BSo I'm working on that this year.
Speaker BI'm grateful with the teenagers.
Speaker BTeenagers and older people.
Speaker BBut I really would like to connect better with the Tigers.
Speaker BAnd then I'm practicing or training to get my fifth degree black belt.
Speaker BSo I would like to go next year over just to test for it.
Speaker BSo I've got everything ready.
Speaker BI just need to test.
Speaker BSo that's my.
Speaker BSome of my.
Speaker BThat's my bigger goal for the next year and a half.
Speaker AExcellent.
Speaker AI love that fifth degree form.
Speaker AIt's the best one.
Speaker AWhat have you been overseas to do any of the other tournaments other than any other events yet?
Speaker BYes, I've been over to world three times.
Speaker BOnce as a color belt.
Speaker BMy first one was as a color belt.
Speaker BIt really made me see martial arts in a different way.
Speaker BIt was big.
Speaker BIt was still in Little Rock that year, so.
Speaker BSo it was crazy big.
Speaker BI didn't think it was so huge when.
Speaker BWhen I got there and then was 2022 was the next one and 2024.
Speaker BThat's when I started competing in the black belt divisions.
Speaker BSure.
Speaker BEverybody there is just so great.
Speaker AIt is.
Speaker AWhat's the, how long does it take you to get to the US to like world championships?
Speaker AWhat's the travel like for you guys?
Speaker BOur last one was pretty long.
Speaker BWe had an eight flight, eight hour flight to.
Speaker BIt's not Dubai.
Speaker BOh, I can't remember the place, but that was an eight hour flight.
Speaker BAnd then it was a 16 hour flight to LA.
Speaker BWe went to LA that year.
Speaker BSo it's a pretty long flight.
Speaker BYou are very tired and we tend to tour a bit before the competition, so you're extra tired when you get there.
Speaker BAnd then it's seminars and just soaking up as much knowledge as we can and then it's competition time.
Speaker BSo it's a hectic journey, but we love it.
Speaker AThat's great.
Speaker AI love it.
Speaker AYeah, I'm really excited that you guys have this A plus tournament down in South Africa now.
Speaker AHopefully we'll start seeing more international athletes come down and participate.
Speaker AIt's on my bucket list to head down there one day as well because it's just so neat to have this international community that you can pop in another country and be.
Speaker AIt's like, well, I got friends here already even though I've never been there.
Speaker ASo is that for you guys coming to like world championships?
Speaker ADoes it feel like that?
Speaker BDefinitely.
Speaker BI've made a couple of friends over the years and every year, every time I go there, I look for them.
Speaker BI look for them in ATM martial arts barriers.
Speaker BI'm like, that's my friend.
Speaker BI know that person.
Speaker BIt's quite an awesome to be part of the international community.
Speaker AI love that.
Speaker AVery cool.
Speaker AWell, we'd like to wrap up with.
Speaker AWhat does it mean to you to be an athlete that goes beyond the belt?
Speaker BTo me it means taking what I've learned and just using it in my day to day life at work.
Speaker BWhen something gets hard, I know I need to push through it, be determined, get through it, have respect for everybody around me.
Speaker BSo yeah.
Speaker BAnd communicate well.
Speaker BThat's also very important to me, to communicate well to everybody.
Speaker BSo that's stuff that has, that martial arts has taught me because I was very shy as a younger kid and that has.
Speaker BTycoon has taught me to communicate well, to have respect, to push through no matter how hard it gets.
Speaker AI love that.
Speaker AIt's, it's so neat how we can take these lessons into the rest of our lives and not just kids, but adults and you know, not just in the US I mean we're all we have the same struggles all over the place.
Speaker ASo I want to congratulate you for being an athlete of the week and thank you so much for your time today.
Speaker BThank you for having me.
Speaker AIt is great to have international athletes with us.
Speaker AGuys.
Speaker ASouth Africa go down there for that A plus tournament could be a really cool experience for you, your family.
Speaker ASo definitely check that out.
Speaker AOne of these days.
Speaker AOne of these days I'm going to all of them now.
Speaker AAnother thing I wanted to mention real quick, going on, and this is for your instructors, licensee school owners.
Speaker AThere are the award nominations going on right now for the different regional awards and things.
Speaker ASo please make sure that you might not have access to it as a regular student, but your instructors, your, your.
Speaker AThe licensees out there do.
Speaker ASo you might nudge them and say, not, hey, nominate me, but say, hey, I heard nominations are out.
Speaker ADid you ever think about this person at a, at a tournament I met, they would be a really good award winner or this person and maybe nudge them a little bit.
Speaker AAnd if you are a licensee instructor, make sure you get those nominations in right away because they'll have to shut that off and then the process for picking winners will go.
Speaker ASo make sure you're taking time to do that if you're a licensee instructor or if you're, you know, just out there as a regular student.
Speaker AIf you got somebody that you think like, hey, this person's great, maybe mention it to your instructor.
Speaker AIt might be somebody sometimes.
Speaker AI know I would love to get some, some suggestions sometimes for my region.
Speaker AUm, I usually have some ideas of, but I don't get to see everything.
Speaker AI don't get to see all the great judges going on and those kind of things.
Speaker ASo it's nice to get some other input.
Speaker ASo, hey, that's going to wrap it up for us today.
Speaker AAnother quick one.
Speaker AYou know, we're in and out right now with these episodes with our athlete of the week, some news, some updates.
Speaker AWe got some other interviews coming, but we just, you know, beginning of the year slammed with all kinds of great stuff going on.
Speaker AI hope to get catch up with some people at Spring national so we can bring you some extra content as we go there to get ready for, you know, big episode number 200 and then continue the future.
Speaker AIf you got someone specific you would like to hear from on the podcast, let me know.
Speaker AI'd love to bring on some.
Speaker ASome special guests that you want to hear from.
Speaker ASo shoot me a message on Instagram, Facebook, wherever you want to find me.
Speaker AYou can find me there.
Speaker AI'd love to hear from you.
Speaker ASo till next time, get out there.
Speaker AGo beyond the Belt ATA Nation podcast.
