Speaker BHello, everyone, everywhere.
Speaker BPastor Robert Thibodeau here.
Speaker BWelcome to the Faith Based Business podcast.
Speaker BWe are so blessed that you are joining us today.
Speaker BYou know, there is no doubt that we are living in a very stressful time.
Speaker BI mean, think about it.
Speaker BJust in the past couple of years, we've had massive natural disasters, the war in Ukraine, the attacks on Israel, the economy with super high inflation, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Speaker BAdd in the complete shutdown of the economies across the world because of the coronavirus, is there any wonder where our stress levels are going through the roof?
Speaker BAnd that's where our guest today comes in.
Speaker BMartin Newman is a health educator committed to giving you up to date information on how to take care of your health, especially when it comes to stress management.
Speaker BNow, Martin was trained for lifestyle and interventions way back in 1998 at the Wildwood Lifestyle center and Hospital.
Speaker BSince then, he's lectured in different parts of the world about a healthy lifestyle and natural remedies.
Speaker BIn fact, he's going to be hosting a stress reduction summit very soon, and we'll be discussing that today as well.
Speaker BSo stay tuned.
Speaker BAmen.
Speaker BWithout all that being said, help me.
Speaker BWelcome to the program Martin Newman.
Speaker BMartin, it is a blessing to talk with you, brother.
Guest 2Yeah, thanks for having me today.
Speaker BAmen.
Speaker BThe first question I always start with is this.
Speaker BOther than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, who is Martin Newman?
Guest 2Well, I am coming from Austria, growing up In Austria, then 1998, I got this training in the United States at Whitehead Lifestyle Center.
Guest 2That's a Christian place there, just a border between Georgia and Tennessee.
Guest 2And I was there six months in the training.
Guest 2Then I went back to there and helped to develop a program that's called Health Expo.
Guest 2It's a community program where we're helping churches to reach out to the community, helping them to improve the lifestyle.
Guest 2Helped also to put together a.
Guest 2A series of health presentations, things like that.
Guest 2And 2005, I had an invitation to implement this Health Expo in Brazil and I just got stuck here.
Speaker BAmen.
Speaker BAmen.
Speaker BAmen.
Speaker BYou know, I Know, for me personally, you know, I'm, you know, people get stressed out every day and I am continually doing something every single day, all day long.
Speaker BI mean, I literally, this is not an exaggeration.
Speaker BI literally have to schedule downtime on my schedule or something will magically appear to make it disappear.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BHow do you help people that are that busy when they are probably saying the same things I am?
Speaker BI'll get back to you later.
Guest 2Yes, there are many things you can do.
Guest 2Again, the first thing is look at your schedule, put some priorities.
Guest 2Sometimes we are very good in packing up our schedule, getting as much as we can, but we don't think what is really worth my time.
Guest 2And sometimes what helps that we put a price tag on the time to say if you're doing something like you're doing, you put doing some coaching or something else, you know, how much do you earn an hour?
Guest 2You know, just think about it.
Guest 2It's a hundred, $150.
Guest 2What is rate?
Guest 2And then, you know, if you're doing some activities, think about it.
Guest 2Is the activity you're doing there, you're spending an hour with, is it worth $150 for you?
Guest 2And if it's not, you know, maybe is it possible to just cut it out?
Guest 2You know, can you just think, you know, how you can adjust your priorities?
Guest 2Can you maybe delegate a few things, you know, to somebody else?
Speaker BRight.
Guest 2Or, you know, what you can do to just, you know, free up a little bit your, your agenda and don't think you need to do everything.
Guest 2Be really more specific, more intentional in what you're doing.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BAmen.
Speaker BAmen.
Speaker BYou know, I know, and, and this is probably, you know, dealing with the economy and all that, but a lot of people are stressed about work and finances.
Speaker BI mean, that puts stress not just on the person and their family, it's also on the job stress that they have to deal with all day long as well.
Speaker BAm I, am I right in that?
Guest 2Yes.
Guest 2Finance is a big one job.
Guest 2Many things is work related.
Guest 2Because it's a little bit complex thing that can be these things on the job that's stressing you out.
Guest 2Relationships is also a big one.
Guest 2And actually that's a thing that's often is stressing people on a deeper level than you think, you know?
Guest 2Yeah, it's a complex thing.
Guest 2You know, there are many things that can stress you out.
Guest 2And it depends also very much how you are reacting to stress.
Guest 2You know, it can be three persons going through the same situation and everybody reacting a different way.
Speaker BWell, how could Someone manage stress at work when they may not be in a position to make changes in their work environment.
Guest 2Yes.
Guest 2You may not be able to influence everything.
Guest 2The first thing is to look, how can I work on my, on my attitude?
Guest 2You know, how do you see the situation?
Guest 2Do, do I think, you know, the situation is out of control?
Guest 2Do I think that it's just too much, too much going on and I can't handle it?
Guest 2Or do I think, you know, yeah, it's quite busy, but let's, let's get on it, you know, let's.
Guest 2To the pesit canons, you know, the last Amen.
Speaker BWhat about when that person then returns home after work?
Speaker BI mean, a lot of time that stress has built up all day and now they walk through the door hoping just to, to chill out and they get hit with something unexpected that they need to deal with at home.
Speaker BYou know, I know my wife was the classic, you know, wait till your father gets home.
Speaker BYou know, tight for several years.
Speaker BMatter of fact, there was a TV cartoon here in the United States by that name too.
Speaker BBut.
Speaker BBut what?
Speaker BJust wait till your dad gets home.
Speaker BYou're going to be a big trouble type thing.
Speaker BAnd that went on for several years until I was in the military and I got deployed for an extended period of time.
Speaker BAnd she had to learn how to deal with it all on her own.
Speaker BBut I digress.
Speaker BHow can someone deal with that continuation of stress at work and then they come home and they get hit with, you know, the washing machine went out, now what are you going to do?
Speaker BYou know, how can they deal with that when they're, they're dealing with this stuff all day long?
Guest 2You know, if it's once in a while, it's, it's something we can handle, but we need just to see where are our limits, you know, do we have some moments that really plan for downtime like you said, you know, you need some moments that you really, you know, give to yourself to have some, some moments to rest.
Guest 2You know, one thing important is also, you know that you really have a weekly day of rest.
Guest 2And that day is really, you know, no responsibilities.
Guest 2You know, it's not the day that you're, you're there washing the car, cleaning the house, things like that.
Guest 2No response, just, just there to relax, you know, connect with God, you know, see what is the purpose, you know, meet with other people and not having to, to worry about anything, you know, and also learning with it to, to do the best you can and then just put your, your, your words also, also put you know, committing to God, you know, really come to the point that you can, yeah, just relax in the sink that you say, okay, we have a heavenly father, he will take care of what he we couldn't manage to do on our own, you know.
Speaker BAmen.
Speaker BYou know, back in the day, this 40 years ago, I was really into running.
Speaker BI mean, you know, the marathons and all that stuff and you know, I just loved running because it was, that was my downtime, I guess you could say.
Speaker BBecause, you know, just the rhythm of the, the running and the, you know, the heart rate, the breathing rhythm, the, the sound of the feet hitting, you know, it was all just, just relaxing to me.
Speaker BI go on a 10 mile run and just relax and you know, now, you know, health problems, knee issues and all that from all those runs, you know, that kind of caught up with me.
Speaker BBut I can remember, you know, that was my, that was my relaxation.
Speaker BBut I would even bring stress into that because, you know, maybe my plan was, okay, I got, I can do 5 miles in 45min and then shower and get ready to go do whatever it is we need to do.
Speaker BBut there's something that delayed me going on the run now.
Speaker BI got 30 minutes.
Speaker BOkay, I can still do three miles, I get four if I go really fast.
Speaker BSo then we start, you know, and just, you know, even my relaxation mode was bringing stress into it.
Guest 2Yeah, exercise is really something very good, you know, something that helps you to deal with stress.
Guest 2You know, it's just helping with the end of things.
Guest 2And the hormone level, it's just excellent, you know, to shut down and to get this, you know, if you're coming back from a running thing like that, you really feel good.
Guest 2You know, it's something that helps you lots to deal with stress in a perfect way, you know, because you know, if you think about it, the stress response is something that really prepares you for either running or fighting.
Guest 2You know, so it's something these hormones in you.
Guest 2And if we're running, then that's the perfect thing, you know, to, to, to really get this stressful response down, you know, to really relax after that.
Guest 2It's a perfect thing to do.
Guest 2But we need to be careful not to put it in a competitive, competitive model, not to be there, try with others.
Guest 2You know, in a football game, you, you need to win a prize or like you say, you know, you need to compete with yourself, you know, to see how much you can do in so much time.
Speaker BYeah, Amen.
Speaker BYou know, I saw on your website an article or something about Four habits that can reduce your stress levels.
Speaker BCan you a little bit about those.
Guest 2With us or habits?
Guest 2Oh, there's many articles on the side which was that.
Speaker BWell, exercise got to be one.
Speaker BWhat else is there?
Guest 2Exercise.
Guest 2Exercise is a big, big one.
Guest 2We need, we need to, to work on.
Guest 2Rest is also important one.
Guest 2You know, like God commands us.
Speaker BHe commands us.
Speaker BI want you to take 52 days every year off.
Speaker BAnd like you said, off does not mean.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BNow this is my day off.
Speaker BSo I can go up and, and clean the eavesdrops and wash and wax the car and cut the grass.
Speaker BAnd that's not off.
Speaker BThat's doing work still.
Guest 2Yeah, this, this weekly terror fast is very important, you know, that we have really one day where we can shut down, not take any responsibilities and just be there with the family and everything else around us and also connect with God with purpose, what you're doing.
Guest 2Besides that.
Guest 2Also the moments of sleep.
Guest 2It's very important to have a quality sleep at night.
Guest 2Sometimes when we have too much to do, we're trying to cut corners in.
Guest 2We say.
Speaker BYeah, yeah, that's right.
Guest 2For instance, then, you know what, what happens then we go to bed late.
Guest 2Then we are waking up in the morning, we are not relaxed.
Guest 2Then our performance goes down, you know, in the night.
Guest 2That is the moment where our brain is going to recuperate.
Guest 2It's consolidated in memory.
Guest 2It is doing things, preparing us for the next day.
Guest 2If you don't have this proper preparation at night, then next day we are waking up and yeah, you're not prepared to do this.
Guest 2Yeah, you're going to accomplish less than you want to.
Guest 2And at the end, you're more stressed again and sleeping worse next night.
Guest 2And it's just a vicious cycle, you know?
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BAmen.
Speaker BAmen.
