Speaker:

We've got a range of clients from one

Speaker:

on one clients to clients who are in

Speaker:

group settings to clients who are only

Speaker:

on zoom to clients that are face to

Speaker:

face and sometimes those conversations

Speaker:

leave us feeling a little bit depleted.

Speaker:

Sometimes they make us feel

Speaker:

energized, but a lot of the time

Speaker:

people are dealing with stuff.

Speaker:

And I want to tell you about

Speaker:

a client of mine, a client of

Speaker:

mine who last year came to me.

Speaker:

We've been working together for a

Speaker:

few years and she came to me and

Speaker:

she was knee deep in delivery.

Speaker:

And she's like, Emma, I've got

Speaker:

so much delivery to do that.

Speaker:

I really need to stop

Speaker:

business development.

Speaker:

I hate those words.

Speaker:

I hate it when someone says to me,

Speaker:

I need to stop business development

Speaker:

because we know what happens.

Speaker:

So for all my clients that do business

Speaker:

development, the moment they stop,

Speaker:

it doesn't hurt then, but three

Speaker:

months, four months, five months

Speaker:

down the track, Oh, it really hurts.

Speaker:

The problem was we were

Speaker:

understaffed for her.

Speaker:

and the business was growing.

Speaker:

So we had to down our business

Speaker:

development tools and she had to

Speaker:

head down bottom up and get stuff

Speaker:

done and deliver for her clients.

Speaker:

So there was no choice.

Speaker:

We talked about it at length.

Speaker:

We talked about how we

Speaker:

could do a little bit of it.

Speaker:

We talked about how we

Speaker:

could do a lot of it.

Speaker:

We talked about.

Speaker:

What else it would take to get that done.

Speaker:

And we agreed that we needed to

Speaker:

put it on hold for a couple of

Speaker:

months, which was a really hard

Speaker:

decision for both her and for me.

Speaker:

Because I know that business

Speaker:

development is what gets us results,

Speaker:

So we knew it would hurt later.

Speaker:

So I want to tell you about later.

Speaker:

Fast forward to three months later

Speaker:

and it was hurting like heck.

Speaker:

And so what we needed to do is get

Speaker:

our developed business development

Speaker:

relationship building skates

Speaker:

back on and get back into it.

Speaker:

We use an app called Marco Polo.

Speaker:

So we chat a lot on Marco Polo about

Speaker:

different strategies, different

Speaker:

plans to put in place in order to

Speaker:

dial up the business development.

Speaker:

But some of our sessions have been a

Speaker:

bit heavier than usual based on the

Speaker:

fact that lack of business development

Speaker:

absolutely means lack of business.

Speaker:

I'm sure you have been there.

Speaker:

I'm sure all of us have been there

Speaker:

where we've had a conversation with

Speaker:

someone and it has felt a bit heavy

Speaker:

and we have had to try and work through

Speaker:

what that has looked like for us.

Speaker:

So there's three things that I

Speaker:

do to kind of shake that off.

Speaker:

The first thing that I do is if I know

Speaker:

I'm going to go into a conversation

Speaker:

where someone is struggling a little

Speaker:

bit, and let's face it, I'm a business

Speaker:

coach, but things happen on the family

Speaker:

front that affect our business, It's

Speaker:

not like I can say to people, leave

Speaker:

all your family stuff at the door.

Speaker:

The reason that we go into

Speaker:

business is normally for our

Speaker:

families, their families.

Speaker:

That's going down.

Speaker:

That absolutely impacts

Speaker:

our coaching sessions.

Speaker:

So I try and prepare myself.

Speaker:

I put myself in some kind of state

Speaker:

where I'm prepared for the conversation

Speaker:

that's going to follow, whether

Speaker:

or not that's a light conversation

Speaker:

or a heavy conversation, I kind

Speaker:

of prepare for that, which kind of

Speaker:

makes me feel like I'm in a bubble.

Speaker:

Yeah, I'm preparing and I'm in a bubble.

Speaker:

After the conversation, I normally

Speaker:

switch off and I take myself

Speaker:

out for a walk in the sunshine.

Speaker:

Now I live in Melbourne, so I say

Speaker:

sunshine with tongue in cheek,

Speaker:

but I take myself for a walk.

Speaker:

I also have a 14 year old dog

Speaker:

and he can't walk very far.

Speaker:

His name is Spencer and we normally

Speaker:

go for a walk around the block, which

Speaker:

is 15 minutes and that helps me.

Speaker:

There's no music.

Speaker:

I'm not talking to anyone.

Speaker:

It just helps me to decompress what

Speaker:

has happened with that session.

Speaker:

I am very privileged to

Speaker:

have a nap every day.

Speaker:

And what the nap does for me is

Speaker:

not only does it help me to be more

Speaker:

productive for the rest of the day

Speaker:

and have energy, it actually allows my

Speaker:

brain to process all the stuff that's

Speaker:

been going on throughout the day.

Speaker:

They're my three strategies.

Speaker:

And I realize sometimes you

Speaker:

can't just go and have a nap.

Speaker:

So what do you do?

Speaker:

I would love to know what you do.

Speaker:

There are a couple of tips that I

Speaker:

give some of my clients who are also

Speaker:

in the coaching and consulting space

Speaker:

in order to kind of shake it off.

Speaker:

First of all, I think a meditation

Speaker:

or a mindfulness activity is great.

Speaker:

Even if you only have a minute between

Speaker:

sessions or five minutes between

Speaker:

sessions, just taking time to focus

Speaker:

on our breath, focus on our mind

Speaker:

and just bring down the feelings.

Speaker:

I think the other thing is that

Speaker:

sometimes we leave a conversation,

Speaker:

this could be in person, it could

Speaker:

be via Zoom, it could be via phone.

Speaker:

We leave a conversation and we feel off.

Speaker:

You know when you have those

Speaker:

conversations, it's just not quite right.

Speaker:

And the question that I honestly

Speaker:

need, you need to ask yourself

Speaker:

is, is that my feelings or is

Speaker:

that someone else's feelings?

Speaker:

Have they just transferred

Speaker:

their feelings?

Speaker:

And in which case, how

Speaker:

are you dealing with that?

Speaker:

And are you taking those feelings on?

Speaker:

now?

Speaker:

If there's someone else's awesome.

Speaker:

if they're your feelings,

Speaker:

then you need to work through

Speaker:

why you're feeling that way.

Speaker:

What does that look like for you?

Speaker:

A journaling exercise is amazing.

Speaker:

asking why a few times to get to the

Speaker:

root of the issue can be very freeing.

Speaker:

If they're not your feelings,

Speaker:

just recognizing that they're

Speaker:

not your feelings is amazing.

Speaker:

I have harmony as one

Speaker:

of my Gallup strengths.

Speaker:

there's 34 strengths in Gallup.

Speaker:

My top five, one of them is harmony.

Speaker:

And what that actually means

Speaker:

is that my gut speaks before my

Speaker:

head has a chance to catch up.

Speaker:

So if something's off,

Speaker:

I can feel it in my gut.

Speaker:

If something's not quite

Speaker:

right, my gut alerts me to it.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And for years I ignored this and

Speaker:

went against my gut and did all the

Speaker:

things went with logic versus my gut.

Speaker:

And that did not bode well for me.

Speaker:

So now I really listened to my gut.

Speaker:

So some things you can

Speaker:

do to shake it off.

Speaker:

So here's some quick tips.

Speaker:

We are all busy business owners, right?

Speaker:

We can go for a walk.

Speaker:

A walk is the best

Speaker:

dopamine hit you can get.

Speaker:

You can play music.

Speaker:

I've got a playlist,

Speaker:

which is a chill playlist.

Speaker:

And I've also got an upbeat You

Speaker:

can do something nice for

Speaker:

yourself, like paint your nails.

Speaker:

there's so many things you can do for me.

Speaker:

I go and do some Lego or I go and

Speaker:

do a jigsaw or I go and talk to

Speaker:

someone if I need to debrief it

Speaker:

somewhere, but more than not, you'll

Speaker:

find me just walking in silence.

Speaker:

That beautiful silence to process

Speaker:

what has happened through the day.

Speaker:

So the next time someone comes

Speaker:

in and, they've got a heavy

Speaker:

load, which we all do at times.

Speaker:

So there's nothing wrong

Speaker:

with the heaviness.

Speaker:

What you don't want to do is you

Speaker:

don't want to catch that heaviness.

Speaker:

You don't want to take that heaviness on.

Speaker:

You really want to process it.

Speaker:

If it's yours to process, if

Speaker:

it's not yours to process,

Speaker:

mate, we got to shake that off.

Speaker:

and I, that's where I

Speaker:

put on Tay Tay music.

Speaker:

You just got to shake it off.

Speaker:

What about you?

Speaker:

Have you ever had a client that

Speaker:

you've worked with and you have

Speaker:

felt a bit heavy after the session?

Speaker:

What have you done to recenter

Speaker:

yourself or to ground yourself?

Speaker:

I would love to hear.

Speaker:

my client who was in the season

Speaker:

for heaviness, she just got

Speaker:

straight back on that horse.

Speaker:

And she started doing business

Speaker:

development, building relationships

Speaker:

because she is so good at it.

Speaker:

And that drought, that three month

Speaker:

drought was fixed pretty quickly.

Speaker:

So don't despair.

Speaker:

If you're sitting there thinking,

Speaker:

that's me, just jump back on the horse.

Speaker:

You'll be absolutely fine.

Speaker:

If you do the one right thing

Speaker:

that you need to do right now.

Speaker:

So grab a cuppa, have a little sit

Speaker:

down, work out how you deal with

Speaker:

people who have some heaviness

Speaker:

of stuff going on in their lives.

Speaker:

And what do you do to process it,

Speaker:

to shake it off, to work out whether

Speaker:

it's yours or whether it's theirs.

Speaker:

and your body, your heart

Speaker:

and your mind will thank you.
