Speaker ALet's get into today's reading from Romans 2:17 through 2029 from the Message Religion can't save you if you're brought up Jewish.
Speaker ADon't assume that you can lean back in the arms of your religion and take it easy feeling smug because you're an insider to God's revelation, a connoisseur of the best things of God, informed on the latest doctrines.
Speaker AI have a special word of caution for you who are sure that you have it all together yourselves.
Speaker AAnd because you know God's revealed word inside and out, feel qualified to guide others through their blind alleys of dark nights and confused emotions to God.
Speaker AWhile you're guiding others, who is going to guide you?
Speaker AI'm quite serious while preaching, don't steal.
Speaker AAre you going to rob people blind?
Speaker AWho would suspect you?
Speaker AThe same with adultery, the same with idolatry.
Speaker AYou can get by with almost anything if you front it with eloquent talk about God and His law.
Speaker AThe line from Scripture it's because of you Jews that the outsiders frown on God shows us an old problem that isn't going away.
Speaker ACircumcision, the surgical ritual that marks you as a Jew, is great if you live in accordance with God's law.
Speaker ABut if you don't, it's worse than not being circumcised.
Speaker AThe reverse is also true.
Speaker AThe uncircumcised who keep God's ways are as good as as the circumcised.
Speaker AIn fact, better.
Speaker ABetter to keep God's laws uncircumcised than break it circumcised.
Speaker ADon't you see?
Speaker AIt's not the cut of a knife that makes a Jew.
Speaker AYou become a Jew by who you are it's the mark of God in your heart, not of a knife on your skin, that makes a Jew.
Speaker AAnd recognition comes from God, not legalistic critics.
Speaker AWell, in today's reflection we're exploring this passage from Romans 2, 17:29 that speaks to religious privilege, performative faith and authentic spirituality.
Speaker AAnd Paul's words remain startlingly relevant to modern religious discourse.
Speaker AHere's some points to ponder.
Speaker AThe first is about the danger of religious superiority Paul addresses who feel smugly secure in their religious identity today.
Speaker AThis speaks to Christian nationalism and religious exceptionalism that can manifest in assuming moral superiority or claiming exclusive access to divine truth.
Speaker AThis passage challenges us to examine how religious identity can become a source of privilege and oppression rather than transformation.
Speaker AThen there's authenticity versus performance.
Speaker AThe texts critique those who front it with eloquent talk about God while their actions contradict their words.
Speaker AWe live in a social media age where religious performance is often rewarded with likes and shares, and this really speaks to a gap between public piety and lived ethics.
Speaker AProgressive faith calls us to examine whether our religious expressions serve justice, are just our image.
Speaker AThen there's reimagining religious identity.
Speaker APaul radically redefines religious belonging.
Speaker AIt's not the cut of a knife that makes a Jew, he says.
Speaker AThis invites us to question how we define religious identity today.
Speaker ARather than external markers or doctrinal adherence, authentic faith might be better measured by our commitment to justice and love and community transformation.
Speaker ALet's talk about an action step.
Speaker AExamine one way your religious identity might contribute to some sense of privilege or superiority and choose a concrete action to practice humility and learning from those outside of your own religious tradition.
Speaker AThis might mean attending a faith service of another faith expression or reading theology from a different perspective or engaging in justice work led by some non religious organization when they come back with a closing prayer in just a minute, I always just like to remind you that we've got a resource for you.
