Sometimes you just want to spar when you're playing games.
Speaker ALet's see what it is all about.
Speaker ALet's get started.
Speaker BSir.
Speaker BI will live with perseverance in the spirit of Taekwondo, courtesy for fellow students, integrity within myself and to become a black belt leader.
Speaker BWelcome to the ATA Nation podcast.
Speaker ALadies and gentlemen, instructors, teachers, students, masters, grandmasters of Songam Taekwondo, welcome back to the ATA Nation podcast.
Speaker AWe are thrilled to have you with us.
Speaker AWhat are you thinking about these bi weekly or bi monthly fortnightly?
Speaker AOoh, we need to bring back the word fortnight.
Speaker AThis is episode 135 and I am your host, Senior master Zach Hayden.
Speaker AIt is a pleasure to be with you talking all about things in Songam Taekwondo and ATA Nation across the world.
Speaker AHow have you guys been doing with your belt ambassador campaign?
Speaker AWe have had so many great ambassadors at our school.
Speaker AOn our next episode, I'm going to be shouting out some ambassadors that we've gotten that we've heard that they've done an amazing job.
Speaker ASo has your school been doing the belt ambassador campaign?
Speaker AHow's it going?
Speaker AWe would love to hear.
Speaker AWe the idea is just help, you know, change people's lives.
Speaker AI one of my, not one of my highest ranked student, he's going through the mastership process this year.
Speaker AHe came in to martial arts because of a buddy event.
Speaker AHis friend brought him in and now he's married to someone he met in Taekwondo.
Speaker AHe's going through the mastership process.
Speaker AHe's got a bunch of kids who are also in Taekwondo with us.
Speaker AIt is just changed his life.
Speaker AYou could change people's lives just like that by inviting them class.
Speaker AWouldn't that be great?
Speaker ANow another way to introduce somebody to martial arts, maybe get them warmed up to the idea of martial arts before they come in to their first class, maybe is have invite them over and have a little game night.
Speaker AToday's episode is going to talk about all this really cool new card game created by an ATA master.
Speaker ASo let's, let's talk.
Speaker BSpecial guest interview.
Speaker AATA Nation.
Speaker AI am super excited to be back with you today.
Speaker AAnd we have Master Hayes.
Speaker AHow are you today, sir?
Speaker CDoing great, sir.
Speaker CHow are you doing?
Speaker AI am wonderful.
Speaker AI saw this thing online.
Speaker AThis, this card game.
Speaker AWe're going to get into it.
Speaker AI've got some questions.
Speaker AI'm excited about it.
Speaker ABut before that I just like to go a little bit into everybod origin story.
Speaker AA little bit.
Speaker AHow'd you get into martial arts?
Speaker CSure.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CSo Christmas in 1992, I received the Christmas Present that we all enjoy, and that's karate lessons for Christmas.
Speaker CSo I started in 93 in Montgomery, Alabama, under Chick Mathis, who.
Speaker CWho was under.
Speaker CUnder Grandmaster Soon Ho Lee.
Speaker CAnd.
Speaker CYeah, so I trained in Montgomery for several years before moving to Mobile and.
Speaker CAnd opening up our.
Speaker COur own school.
Speaker CAnd been kicking since.
Speaker ABeen doing it ever since.
Speaker AOh, that's.
Speaker AIt's so neat to see how many people.
Speaker AYou know, we've got some people who start in other styles and whatnot, but how many people I interview that are all ATA born and bred, which is just super cool.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CIt's been.
Speaker CBeen that way forever.
Speaker CAnd I don't.
Speaker CI don't.
Speaker CI don't know anything else.
Speaker AYeah, that's awesome.
Speaker AWell, people have been seeing it online.
Speaker AWe're recording this before Christmas.
Speaker AThis will go out.
Speaker APeople will hear this a little after Christmas.
Speaker ABut you guys over there have this card game coming.
Speaker ATell me about this.
Speaker AThis combo master game, right?
Speaker CYes.
Speaker CSo combo master.
Speaker CIt's funny because this past year I've been working a lot to.
Speaker CTo create weekly missions for our students that are character development type missions.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker CAnd I was trying to tie in some type of card game element to it.
Speaker CAnd so card games had been on my mind, and I just woke up one morning and I was like, ATA sparring points.
Speaker CATA sparring rules.
Speaker CThis is completely not a character development mission.
Speaker CBut this would be such a fun game.
Speaker CAnd I stayed up all night developing the concept and the cards.
Speaker CAnd usually my projects get like 80% done, and the last 20% never gets done.
Speaker AOh, hey, I am right there with you.
Speaker AI understand that, but.
Speaker CBut I knocked it all out that one night, and we printed about the test cards on some card stock and started playing with my family, testing it out, and it's.
Speaker CIt's pretty fun.
Speaker AOkay, so are you.
Speaker ADo you guys.
Speaker ADo you have a history of, like, playing card games?
Speaker AIs that a thing that you guys do?
Speaker AYou have, like, the.
Speaker AMy family is a big fan of all the exploding kittens.
Speaker AThe taco one where you throw the burrito.
Speaker AYeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker AYou guys play card games?
Speaker AIs that something you're into?
Speaker CYes.
Speaker CWe have tons of games.
Speaker CWe.
Speaker CI'm a fam.
Speaker CWe have a family of five.
Speaker CSo we've always have family game nights.
Speaker CAnd.
Speaker CAnd I'm just a competitive person all the way around.
Speaker CAnd so anytime I have a chance to beat my kids at a game, I'm all in.
Speaker AOkay, so you come up with this idea, sparring card game, which I think is super cool idea.
Speaker AWe'll talk about, like, rules and stuff in a second to kind of get the idea of it.
Speaker AYou sit down, you.
Speaker AYou create this game.
Speaker AYou go to test it.
Speaker ALike, I know most games get, like, tons of play testing.
Speaker AStrangely, my brother has a friend who.
Speaker AThat's like his.
Speaker ATo play test games.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AWhich is like, that's.
Speaker AThat's a fun game.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker ABut how did this play testing go?
Speaker ADid you.
Speaker ADid you have to modify things?
Speaker AWhat did people.
Speaker AWhat were their thoughts originally?
Speaker CSo it was.
Speaker CIt was nice, too, because I had a camp that we were hosting for.
Speaker CFor our students.
Speaker CWe had about 40 or 40 or 50 people at the camp that weekend.
Speaker CAnd it was.
Speaker CSo I brought the game there and.
Speaker CAnd let them play test for us.
Speaker CAnd the biggest thing that we had to adjust was just how many cards do you start with?
Speaker CHow many?
Speaker CThere's a particular wild card that makes everybody else in the game have to draw three cards.
Speaker CIn the beginning, I had too many of those in there because everybody had the entire deck in their hands.
Speaker CSo we had to adjust.
Speaker CSo make sure that it works the way it should.
Speaker AOkay, so give us a little overview of how I play this game, because I just love the idea of not only playing, like, a card game that's sparring stuff, but it makes me think that also, like, it will help students, like, especially newer spars, kind of understand the idea of.
Speaker AOf offense, defense, how, you know, I yell at him in class all the time.
Speaker AYou've got to do combos.
Speaker AYou can't just do one.
Speaker ALike, is this going to help me get them to do combos then?
Speaker CSo I think it does.
Speaker CI think it helps them understand basic offense and defense.
Speaker CIt.
Speaker CIt follows again the ATA point system.
Speaker CSo I can play a kick card, or I can make a combo and play a head kick, which would give me two points instead of one point, or I can make it a jump head kick, which would give me three points.
Speaker CSo.
Speaker CSo I think it does help them understand the basic concept of sparring.
Speaker CI love that, but I can go into.
Speaker AYeah, yeah.
Speaker ALet me kind of walk us through how to play a game.
Speaker CSure.
Speaker CAll right, so think about uno meets martial arts.
Speaker CThat's what my instructors are saying.
Speaker CAnd so you can play two to four people.
Speaker CEverybody starts with five cards, and the goal is to get rid of your cards first.
Speaker CAnd so basically, if.
Speaker CIf I played first, I would play an attack card, an offensive card.
Speaker CDifferent punches and kicks are in the.
Speaker CIn the card options.
Speaker CAnd if I were then to do an offense on you, then you need to either defend it.
Speaker CAnd if you can't defend it because you don't have a defense card, then you have to draw a card, which means I scored on you.
Speaker AGotcha.
Speaker AAnd then my hand gets bigger because I have more cards, which means I can't win as easily.
Speaker CCorrect.
Speaker ASo.
Speaker CSo then you turn around.
Speaker CIf you.
Speaker CAfter you go, then the next person online is attacking the next player.
Speaker CSo you're always attacking the next player around.
Speaker CBut it changes because sometimes you do have a defense card, sometimes you don't have a defense card.
Speaker CThere are also block and counter cards.
Speaker CSo this is kind of cool.
Speaker CIf I were to do an offensive card on you, you could do a block and counter, which would negate any points.
Speaker CI wouldn't get any points for on you, but you're actually scoring points backwards on me.
Speaker COkay.
Speaker CThe play continues the way that it normally goes.
Speaker AThe direction.
Speaker ANow when you say I score a point, are we keeping track of points somewhere or is that.
Speaker AThat is the.
Speaker AYou have to draw a card, which means I basically scored a point.
Speaker CPoints are always just draw cards.
Speaker CSo if I scored three points on you, then you're drawing three cards.
Speaker CSo your hand's getting bigger and bigger and bigger.
Speaker AYeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker AJust like Uno, you.
Speaker AYou got a.
Speaker AA billion.
Speaker AA billion points.
Speaker ASo you've got these block and counter cards, which is basically almost what.
Speaker ALike if you think in Uno, like I stop in reverse, but you don't change the reverse of order a little bit.
Speaker ABut I'm just attacking back that person.
Speaker AThey.
Speaker AThen I can.
Speaker AIf I.
Speaker ALet's say I get attacked, I'm going to.
Speaker AI don't have a defense card.
Speaker AI.
Speaker AThey score a point on me, I grab a card.
Speaker AThe next per.
Speaker AThen I'm done.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker AThe next person goes and attacks the person after that.
Speaker CRight.
Speaker CSo when you play a card or you draw a card, that's your turn.
Speaker AGotcha.
Speaker CAnd then it keeps rotating around.
Speaker CAnd there are also other cards in there, like they're warning cards.
Speaker CSo maybe you don't have a defensive card, but you have a warning card.
Speaker CIf I punched at you, you could put down.
Speaker CIt's called a throat punch card, which means you punch me in the throat, which I don't get the point, but I get a warning point.
Speaker CSo it kind of works like a counter punch.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker ASo if I play a warning card, what I'm saying is you.
Speaker AYour attack was actually illegal.
Speaker AYou hit me.
Speaker AI got you.
Speaker AOh, I love that.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CAnd there's.
Speaker CThere's low, low blow.
Speaker CSo that's like a Low kick card.
Speaker CThere are.
Speaker CThey're timeout cards, which are skip cards.
Speaker CSo it's funny about these is I was asking my.
Speaker CMy kids, I was like, what would be funny reasons that you would have to like, have a timeout or.
Speaker COr.
Speaker CSo we came up with a course like equipment malfunction.
Speaker CI thought about the time my.
Speaker CMy son was sparring and his cup came out this pant legs on the end of the ring.
Speaker AI was like, all right, we've all seen that.
Speaker CYeah, so.
Speaker CSo equipment malfunction.
Speaker CWe came up with power outage, which was funny.
Speaker CI was designing it and I heard that Texas had a power outage.
Speaker CThat's so cool.
Speaker AOh, we have one.
Speaker AWe have a tournament.
Speaker AI don't know why this convention center has light switches that aren't covered by something, but every time we're there, the lights go out at some point during the tournament and it's like, ah, so that's.
Speaker AI totally understand that card.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CAnd then my son's contribution to the game was he's like, wouldn't it be crazy if a cat walked through the ring?
Speaker CSo there's a cat.
Speaker CThere's a cat in the ring skip card as well.
Speaker AThat will be my daughter's favorite card.
Speaker AI guarantee it.
Speaker AGuarantee it.
Speaker CSo, yeah, but those are the cards.
Speaker CAnd then we've got.
Speaker CWe've got wild cards, too.
Speaker CWild cards are things that like judges call no see or out of the ring, which would negate any kind of attack that was put on you.
Speaker CAnd it also then reverses the direction of play.
Speaker COh, so there's some other little caveats to how that works.
Speaker AOh, this sounds super cool.
Speaker AWell, okay, so now transferring from the game real quick of, like, how you play, what was the process for you to.
Speaker AYou came up with this idea, you're playing it, but then you're like, you know what?
Speaker AWe could do this.
Speaker AMake this.
Speaker AHow did you go about, like, going, okay, let's decide to make this game and release it to the world.
Speaker CThe biggest was just the feedback that I got from that camp that, that, you know, everybody was like, you should publish this.
Speaker CYou should publish this.
Speaker CThis is so cool.
Speaker CI want to.
Speaker CAnd it was just basically the, the tremendous feedback that I got back from our students.
Speaker CAnd then just looking into the manufacturing process and I just, I thought that other school owners would probably enjoy a tool like this.
Speaker CThat's.
Speaker CThat's.
Speaker CIt benefits your students, it'll add retail revenue.
Speaker CAnd it's.
Speaker CI think our students, a lot of times, they're not going to quit when they're in classes, they quit when they're away from classes.
Speaker CAnd so if I can get them thinking about martial arts and doing martial arts when they're, they're not at our school, then I want to find ways to do that.
Speaker AYeah, well, it's super cool.
Speaker ALike I have a, we have a camp, a rec camp next week and then we've got some other things coming up and I can totally see, you know, taking it and playing it a little bit, getting students the idea of what's going on or not next week, a couple weeks, whenever.
Speaker ABut what a cool, you know, what a cool way to enter, you know, connect taekwondo and especially like sparring.
Speaker ASparring is something that people don't necessarily think about it as much.
Speaker ALike it's the action packed part.
Speaker AYou know, like form seems like something that might be a board game or something like that.
Speaker ASo now technically I don't know if you, have you ever played Chief Master Wegman Made the path the Mastership game?
Speaker CI do, I have that.
Speaker CYes sir.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker ASo now we have, there are two ATA card games that you can play, man.
Speaker AWe're just, There needs to be a, an empire of song on card games.
Speaker AThere you go.
Speaker ASo tell me, people can go and buy this game now where would do we go?
Speaker AWhat's that process like to buy their own, their own version.
Speaker CSo head to combo mastercard game.com and we, we have retail open now and we're getting, we're gonna start shipping those out.
Speaker CWell, by the time this goes live we'll be shipping already and then we are also setting up our wholesale accounts right now so they can go to the same website and there's just a little, little spot that you can check, check for wholesale and we will just verify that you're a school owner and then we'll set you up with that account.
Speaker CAnd we're doing, we're doing some bulk pricing there so that way everybody can use it as a revenue generator in their school.
Speaker AThat's awesome.
Speaker AI, I saw just the other day, how many states did you say have orders in them already?
Speaker CWe are in over half the states already.
Speaker CSo we've sold over probably about 150 units between our school and open it up to, to the public.
Speaker AThat's, that's super exciting.
Speaker AI didn't see Alaska on there yet, right?
Speaker ANot yet because there's that club in Alaska.
Speaker AI'm going to reach out to them and be like, you guys got to get one.
Speaker ASo we've got out of the, you know, contiguous States we can get out there in some other states.
Speaker AOh, man, that is so cool.
Speaker CIt's funny, I posted that and I had three or four people like, hey, you don't have my state yet.
Speaker CI'm buying one.
Speaker CAnd so anyway, it's fun.
Speaker AExcellent.
Speaker AWell, what is your, what's your big hope for this, for this game?
Speaker AAs people go and start to buy and start to play, what are you hoping for?
Speaker AThis.
Speaker CSo, you know, I just want other people to be able to use this as a tool to help, you know, help them grow their, their student base and their schools and, and more than just martial arts students.
Speaker CI just, you know, I want to, I want to put it out there to.
Speaker CIt's obviously open to the public, but just to have a fun way to build family time and connections.
Speaker CWe're also, in the spring, we're going to be introducing some holographic expansion packs.
Speaker AI saw some pictures, those were super.
Speaker CCool looking and they really add a lot of different fun elements to the game.
Speaker CAnd we're looking at doing those.
Speaker CSo they're numbered collector's cards.
Speaker CAnd so we think that by putting it into the schools, the kids are going to want to basically trading cards, collecting cards.
Speaker AYeah, totally cool.
Speaker AYeah, I saw those pictures.
Speaker ASo you are looking at kind of expansions, things like that.
Speaker AI know, like I said earlier, I'm a big fan of exploding kittens and they had a.
Speaker AThey've just got a bunch of different expansion packs.
Speaker AYou guys are playing with how to, to add in different kinds of cards and stuff.
Speaker CYeah, yeah, we've got, we've already got them in.
Speaker CI've already got some right here and we've been play testing them.
Speaker CWe actually had our instructors instead of, you know, we got Christmas coming up, so it's kind of slower right now.
Speaker CSo Monday staff meeting.
Speaker CWe just played Combo Master for an hour and play tested.
Speaker CIt was fun.
Speaker AYeah, that's awesome.
Speaker AI've got a, I've got a planning meeting with some staff coming up and maybe we'll, maybe we'll dive into the game a little bit there, so.
Speaker AWell, that is, that's super cool.
Speaker AWell, we want everybody to head over to.
Speaker AYou said combomastercardgame.com Correct.
Speaker AGet your copy and then definitely post online pictures of you like playing the game with students, with family, whatnot.
Speaker AWe would love to see that online and just people, you know, sharing spark, you know, now you can be like, hey, my, I sparred my grandma.
Speaker AYou know, play the game with your grandma and be like, I kicked my grandma in the Head with this card game.
Speaker AThat'd be awesome.
Speaker CAnd not get in trouble, right?
Speaker AExactly.
Speaker AWe were eating cookies and playing a card game.
Speaker AThat's what a cool thing.
Speaker ASir.
Speaker AThank you.
Speaker AWell, one for this because this game is going to be, I think, just a lot of fun for our students and for everybody.
Speaker AAnd we want to thank you for your time today.
Speaker AI really appreciate it.
Speaker CYeah, thanks for having me on.
Speaker CAnd again, we went premium with everything.
Speaker CThis is it.
Speaker CIt's a big box.
Speaker CSo it's not just like a little bitty deck and.
Speaker AThe graphics and stuff.
Speaker ADid you.
Speaker AWho did the graphics?
Speaker AYou had somebody do those.
Speaker AWhere did they come from?
Speaker CSo that's a combination of me and ChatGPT and yeah, they look great.
Speaker AThey're like.
Speaker AIt makes me think a little diary of a wimpy kid.
Speaker CThat's kind of the style I went with.
Speaker CAnd then I put it in Photoshop and then tweaked things and made it.
Speaker CMade it what it was.
Speaker AI think it's a really cool esthetic.
Speaker ADid you say you have.
Speaker ADo you have one of those holographic cards handy?
Speaker CDo you?
Speaker AShow us one real quick.
Speaker CThese are our test ones.
Speaker CSo we're actually going a little more.
Speaker CYou know, that's the thing in this process is learning.
Speaker CLearning how like.
Speaker COh, that's not exactly like I thought it was going to be.
Speaker CBut here's.
Speaker CHere's a timeout card.
Speaker CIt's got some Ninja Turtle looking characters.
Speaker ALove that Pizza party.
Speaker CSkips the entire group there.
Speaker ALet's see.
Speaker CHere we go.
Speaker CWe've got any Mortal Kombat fans?
Speaker CWe've got over here.
Speaker AOh, no, it's.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker CScorpion.
Speaker CSwitch hands with another player.
Speaker CSo, yeah, so there's things like that.
Speaker CThere's a.
Speaker CThere's a Nunchuck Ninja.
Speaker CYou get to target specific people.
Speaker AThose are great looking cards.
Speaker AI really.
Speaker AYou can tell you've gone really nice.
Speaker AYou know, this isn't a game you're getting and it's.
Speaker AIt's like it was all kind of home, home done and whatnot.
Speaker AIt's really cool.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CAnd here's the final one.
Speaker CI'll show you.
Speaker CIt's the Awe Snap card.
Speaker CAnd so when someone goes out and they think they won't, you can play this one.
Speaker CAnd it rewinds time and it starts the game back up again.
Speaker AOh, that's super cool.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker AOh, I love it.
Speaker AThose will be the expansion packs coming in the spring.
Speaker CCorrect.
Speaker AOkay, so everybody's got to get your packs.
Speaker ANow head over to combo masters.
Speaker ACombo mastercard game.com and get yours now and then you'll be ready when the expansion packs come.
Speaker CAwesome.
Speaker CYes.
Speaker CThat's great.
Speaker AAwesome.
Speaker AThank you for your time today, sir.
Speaker AWe really appreciate it.
Speaker CThank you, sir.
Speaker CI appreciate you having me on.
Speaker AWell, I think the game is super cool.
Speaker AI got mine in the mail.
Speaker AWe've been playing at my house.
Speaker AI've got some really neat holographic cards that I was sent that are super cool.
Speaker ASo make sure you check out the link in the show notes as well to get your copy.
Speaker ALicensee school owners, you are able to get a a licensee account now and you can sell these at your school as well.
Speaker AIt's a fun game, really neat.

Speaker ASo definitely check that out.
Speaker AHead over and see that info in the show notes.
Speaker AHey, speaking of show notes, we're going to leave a link in there to a live broadcast that Chief Master Skiles did all about Spring Nationals.
Speaker AI don't know if you guys know, but Spring Nationals is coming up.
Speaker ALots of great events.
Speaker AYou need to make sure that you get registered for the actual tournament.
Speaker AIf you're going to compete at the tournament, get registered for any training that you plan on doing.
Speaker AMake sure you talk to your instructor about, you know, the training options that you could have there.
Speaker ALast episode we talked all about the tryouts for Team Mexico and Team Philippines.
Speaker ASo you know, that's super cool.
Speaker AAnd then don't forget to book your hotel rooms because those are going to be going quick and you want to make sure you've got those set.
