Speaker AHere's today's reading reading from Luke 6:1:5 from the Message In Charge of the Sabbath On a certain Sabbath, Jesus was walking through a field ripe with grain and his disciples were pulling off the heads of the grain and rubbing them in their hands to get rid of the chaff and eating them.
Speaker AAnd some Pharisees said, why are you doing that?
Speaker ABreaking the Sabbath rule.
Speaker ABut Jesus stood up for them.
Speaker AHave you never read what David and those with him did when they were hungry?
Speaker AHow he entered the sanctuary and ate fresh bread off the altar, bread that no one but the priests were allowed to eat.
Speaker AHe also handed it out to his companions.
Speaker AThen he said, the Son of Man is no slave to the Sabbath.
Speaker AHe's in charge.
Speaker AWell, in this reflection today, this is Jesus's story about prioritizing human needs over religious regulations.
Speaker ASome important points here.
Speaker ASo let's get into our points to ponder.
Speaker AThe first is about sacred disruption.
Speaker AJesus disciples breaking Sabbath rules wasn't merely rebellion.
Speaker AIt was about human dignity.
Speaker AWhen religious rules cause hunger or harm, they've lost their sacred purpose.
Speaker AThis speaks to how progressive faith must sometimes challenge traditional interpretations that marginalize or harm vulnerable people.
Speaker ASecond point is about reframing authority.
Speaker ABy referencing David's story, Jesus shows how even revered religious figures sometimes broke the rules for human needs.
Speaker AThis suggests that true spiritual authority comes not from rigid rule following, but from promoting human flourishing.
Speaker AToday, this might mean challenging church traditions that exclude LGBTQ persons, that deny women's leadership, or prioritize institutional preservation over human need.
Speaker AOne more point to ponder.
Speaker AIt's about liberating the Sabbath.
Speaker AJesus claim to be in charge of Sabbath suggests that sacred practices should serve human well being, not restricted.
Speaker AThis invites us to examine how religious practices might be reimagined to promote rest, justice and community care rather than control and exclusion.
Speaker AHere's your action step.
Speaker AExamine religious rules or traditions in your own community or community of faith that might cause harm or exclusion.
Speaker AChoose one practice to thoughtfully challenge or reimagine how that works.
Speaker APerhaps it's exclusive communion practices or rigid gender roles or buildings.
Speaker AUse policies that prioritize property over people and come up with some proposal for how this practice can be transformed to better serve human flourishing and community care over building maintenance we'll have a closing prayer here in just a minute.
Speaker AI want you to know that we have a resource for you to help you with your at home Bible study.

Speaker AWhen we confuse rules with righteousness, tradition with truth, control with care, call us back to your way of love.
Speaker AHelp us to distinguish between sacred boundaries that protect and religious rules that restrict.
Speaker AGive us courage to break unjust regulations, wisdom to reimagine sacred practices, and compassion to prioritize human flourishing.
Speaker AMay we be people who choose love over law, care over control, liberation over limitation.
Speaker AIn courage and hope, we pray.
Speaker AAmen.
