1 00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:20,000 Welcome to Podcast Answers. My name is Andy and I'm your host. And what I like to do is I like to help people start and grow their podcasts, answering any podcast questions along the way. 2 00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:38,000 That's right. Today we are going to be talking about a question that somebody has asked me. But first, I want to let you know that I do this show because I want to help people start podcasting. 3 00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:51,000 So if you want to start podcasting and you need help, you can contact me at podcastanswers.com/contact. And I would love to help you start your show today. 4 00:00:51,000 --> 00:01:00,000 So what are we going to be talking about today? That's right. We are going to be talking about picking a name for your podcast. 5 00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:13,000 So somebody asked me just the other day, "Hey, how do I pick a name? Is it a good name? What do I do? How do I know if it's been taken before?" All of those things. 6 00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:27,000 So I'm going to talk about that today and just talk just a little bit about how you should know, how you can know if your podcast name that you picked is a good name. 7 00:01:27,000 --> 00:01:37,000 So here's the very first thing that you're going to want to do is, "What is your show about?" Let's think about that. 8 00:01:37,000 --> 00:01:48,000 Is your show like, what is it about? What's it for? So in this case, the person that I was working with is going to be talking kind of like community connections. 9 00:01:48,000 --> 00:01:56,000 They're going to be connecting with people in the community and so they're going off of that based on their names. 10 00:01:56,000 --> 00:02:01,000 So they're kind of thinking of names that had to do with community and connections and things like that. 11 00:02:01,000 --> 00:02:09,000 So you want to think about what is going to be a good, something that's going to resonate with your audience as far as that goes. 12 00:02:09,000 --> 00:02:16,000 What's it about? So think of a creative name that describes your show and your audience. 13 00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:23,000 So maybe for one of my podcasts, I'm actually speaking to dads, to fathers, to dudes. 14 00:02:23,000 --> 00:02:29,000 And so our show name is "Dudes and Dads" - Dudes and Dads podcast specifically. 15 00:02:29,000 --> 00:02:44,000 So for that show, that perfectly describes what our audience is because it's talking to fathers about their fatherhood, about trying to create community and engagement with fathers. 16 00:02:44,000 --> 00:02:57,000 And so for that, we thought of a creative name that kind of describes our show and our audience because we wanted dudes and dads kind of like, "Dude dads, what is that? It's a dude dad." 17 00:02:57,000 --> 00:03:02,000 And so that kind of describes Dudes and Dads podcast and that's kind of what we were going on. 18 00:03:02,000 --> 00:03:08,000 And so again, so you need to think about things like what your show is about. 19 00:03:08,000 --> 00:03:20,000 And so I would actually suggest getting a whiteboard out, you know, a dry erase board and going ahead and thinking about those things that just listening out like, what is your show about? 20 00:03:20,000 --> 00:03:23,000 Like what is the main purpose of your show? 21 00:03:23,000 --> 00:03:27,000 And then listening out who your audience is and trying to describe your audience. 22 00:03:27,000 --> 00:03:40,000 And then out of that, trying to create something that's catchy and something that's going to resonate with people and help them know about your show and what it is. 23 00:03:40,000 --> 00:03:52,000 Now, after you pick a name, and so this is one of the things that the person that came to me said is once I, you know, once I picked the name, how do I know if this is going to be a good name? 24 00:03:52,000 --> 00:03:59,000 And so I suggested that they go to podcastindex.org. 25 00:03:59,000 --> 00:04:11,000 And when you do that, you can go ahead and, and you're going to be able to search in the podcast index for all sorts of podcasts. 26 00:04:11,000 --> 00:04:15,000 The podcast index is an open search and open index of podcasting. 27 00:04:15,000 --> 00:04:24,000 And you can go in there and type in your name and then the name of the show that you're talking about. 28 00:04:24,000 --> 00:04:29,000 And you can then see if other other shows have that name. 29 00:04:29,000 --> 00:04:39,000 So for instance, if I search for podcast answers, I see things like Bible Answer Man, ask Father Josh, your Catholic question and answer podcast. 30 00:04:39,000 --> 00:04:41,000 And then I see podcast answers. 31 00:04:41,000 --> 00:04:46,000 So in this case, I would not want to take that name because it's already a podcast. 32 00:04:46,000 --> 00:04:53,000 Now, there is lots of other things that have answers in the name, the church answer podcast, fidelity answers, accounting answers podcast. 33 00:04:53,000 --> 00:05:07,000 Like there's a lot of different podcasts with the name answers in them, but that's not necessarily a bad thing in this case because what it's doing is it's allowing you to see there's not. 34 00:05:07,000 --> 00:05:11,000 I would stick stay away from things that are going to be similar in the name. 35 00:05:11,000 --> 00:05:22,000 So in this case, again, it was things that were that there are, there are different, you know, answer answers in there, you know, podcasts with answers in it. 36 00:05:22,000 --> 00:05:27,000 But the only one that I see in there that says podcast answers is this podcast. 37 00:05:27,000 --> 00:05:36,000 And so that for me, that was a good choice for this podcast name because there wasn't a lot of other podcasts by that same name. 38 00:05:36,000 --> 00:05:40,000 Again, you can, you can have the same name as somebody else. 39 00:05:40,000 --> 00:05:50,000 It's not illegal to have the podcast name, but you can be sued if you have a podcast name that's going to be close that it's going to be trying to be brand confusing. 40 00:05:50,000 --> 00:05:56,000 Like if you go out to go to the Joe Rogan experience, not Joe Rogan may have trademarked that and registered that. 41 00:05:56,000 --> 00:06:00,000 So that maybe not a good thing unless you're going to spend the money to do that. 42 00:06:00,000 --> 00:06:15,000 But if you're talking about like talk about it podcast or let's connect or real talk or things that are kind of going to be used a lot in the podcast space. 43 00:06:15,000 --> 00:06:18,000 Because those are things that a lot of people tend to name it. 44 00:06:18,000 --> 00:06:20,000 Their names are things like that. 45 00:06:20,000 --> 00:06:29,000 So they have things in their name that are let's talk or real talk or things like that. 46 00:06:29,000 --> 00:06:36,000 And those most likely that people aren't going to register those as trademarks because they're kind of generic. 47 00:06:36,000 --> 00:06:38,000 But again, they're kind of generic. 48 00:06:38,000 --> 00:06:51,000 So you don't want to, to have that name because it's going to be so generic that when someone searches for it, if you say, hey guys, I have a podcast and you can go search for me at any where you find your podcast. 49 00:06:51,000 --> 00:06:55,000 When you do that and it's going to be a super generic name. 50 00:06:55,000 --> 00:07:05,000 People aren't going to be able to find your podcast because they're going to be seeing the hundred other people, the thousand other people that have a name that's super similar. 51 00:07:05,000 --> 00:07:11,000 So along the same lines of going to podcast index.org and searching for your podcast. 52 00:07:11,000 --> 00:07:19,000 Another thing that I would suggest doing most podcasts are going to be in the podcast index, but but not all of them would be. 53 00:07:19,000 --> 00:07:27,000 So one of the next things that I would suggest doing is going to Google and just typing in the name of your podcast that you that you want to get. 54 00:07:27,000 --> 00:07:36,000 So in this case, I will Google podcast answers, but then I will also add in Apple podcast and hit enter. 55 00:07:36,000 --> 00:07:38,000 And then I see my listing on Apple podcast. 56 00:07:38,000 --> 00:07:48,000 So you can do that in Google or you can go to if you have an Apple device, you can go right into Apple or into podcast on the Apple device and search for that. 57 00:07:48,000 --> 00:07:50,000 And see if it comes up with something again. 58 00:07:50,000 --> 00:07:59,000 If you have something where there's going to be a lot of name confusion, you're going to want to stick away from that because what it's going to do is it's going to be hard for people to find. 59 00:07:59,000 --> 00:08:01,000 So don't have a generic name. 60 00:08:01,000 --> 00:08:02,000 Yes, you can. 61 00:08:02,000 --> 00:08:17,000 And yes, you can do that, but it's going to be harder to stand out and be unique and have that be something that people are going to be able to find when they're trying to find your podcast. 62 00:08:17,000 --> 00:08:20,000 Now, can you save a name? 63 00:08:20,000 --> 00:08:24,000 So if you have a good podcast that you are wanting, can you save it? 64 00:08:24,000 --> 00:08:26,000 No, you can't save it. 65 00:08:26,000 --> 00:08:31,000 But what I would do and you can go ahead and and start setting up your podcast right away. 66 00:08:31,000 --> 00:08:41,000 So even if you don't plan on releasing your podcast for another one, two, three, four, five months, maybe go out and get podcast hosting for it. 67 00:08:41,000 --> 00:08:46,000 Put up a trailer, record a trailer that says, you know, hey, this is the XYZ podcast and we're coming soon. 68 00:08:46,000 --> 00:08:56,000 Get that submit that to all of the directories, podcasts, index, Apple podcast, that's going to cover you a lot, but go with all of the listing directories. 69 00:08:56,000 --> 00:09:04,000 And so you, while you can't save a specific podcast name, you can do things to start the ball rolling. 70 00:09:04,000 --> 00:09:12,000 And so that that way you can kind of claim previous, previous ownership of that, that podcast name, if you will. 71 00:09:12,000 --> 00:09:21,000 So some of those things you can do again, our get podcast hosting for it, create your artwork, create a trailer episode, just to get that out there now. 72 00:09:21,000 --> 00:09:23,000 And then you can also register a domain name. 73 00:09:23,000 --> 00:09:31,000 So for instance, you may not be using having a website specifically for your podcast, but I would suggest doing that. 74 00:09:31,000 --> 00:09:38,000 So even if you get the hosting from your, your hosting provider, many hosting providers like the one that I like to use. 75 00:09:38,000 --> 00:09:46,000 And that is, is, is captivate. And if you want to check out captivate, you can check that out at podcastinganswers.com/captivate. 76 00:09:46,000 --> 00:09:50,000 And that will take you and get you a trial of, of captivate. 77 00:09:50,000 --> 00:10:01,000 But many hosts like captivate allow you to take a domain name and register that towards the, the, and have that mapped to their, their website that they give you. 78 00:10:01,000 --> 00:10:05,000 And so when you get captivate, you get a website that has all of your episodes on it and things like that. 79 00:10:05,000 --> 00:10:11,000 You can get, you can go out and register. Like for instance, I have podcast answers.com. 80 00:10:11,000 --> 00:10:16,000 You can register that and point that to your podcast hosting or another website. 81 00:10:16,000 --> 00:10:25,000 If you want for me, I'm hosting my own website for, for this, I have web hosting that I use for my actual website for podcasting answers. 82 00:10:25,000 --> 00:10:34,000 So you can start doing those things and get those around that way when you're, when people try to claim your name, 83 00:10:34,000 --> 00:10:39,000 you can say you already have previous art there. You can already have your domain name around. 84 00:10:39,000 --> 00:10:42,000 You can already have your trailer up and things like that. 85 00:10:42,000 --> 00:10:55,000 So a couple of tips again, stay away from the generic names, search your, your, your potential podcast name at podcastindex.org and Apple podcast. 86 00:10:55,000 --> 00:11:04,000 And then you don't need to have also another thing to remember is you don't need to have the name podcast in your name. 87 00:11:04,000 --> 00:11:13,000 It's just technically a show and podcasts is the delivery mechanism, the RSS feed in the podcast and the podcast app. 88 00:11:13,000 --> 00:11:19,000 That's the delivery mechanism of your show, but your show is just really a show. 89 00:11:19,000 --> 00:11:29,000 So most of the time, like if you're listening to a radio broadcast, you're not going to hear this is the whatever, whatever broadcast. 90 00:11:29,000 --> 00:11:33,000 You're, this is going to be the show, like the name of the show. 91 00:11:33,000 --> 00:11:43,000 So again, you don't need to have the words podcast in your podcast title because it is generic in general. 92 00:11:43,000 --> 00:11:48,000 I mean, like podcasting is the delivery mechanism of your show. 93 00:11:48,000 --> 00:11:52,000 And so you just need to go out and actually call it whatever the name of the show is. 94 00:11:52,000 --> 00:11:57,000 Now, again, I didn't follow that originally when I named the dudes and dads podcast. 95 00:11:57,000 --> 00:12:02,000 We named it dudes and dads podcast, but you can do that. 96 00:12:02,000 --> 00:12:10,000 But again, you don't need to because podcasting is just the delivery mechanism of your show. 97 00:12:10,000 --> 00:12:14,000 So you don't need podcast in the name. 98 00:12:14,000 --> 00:12:18,000 Guys, this show is value for value. 99 00:12:18,000 --> 00:12:20,000 I hope you got some value out of this. 100 00:12:20,000 --> 00:12:24,000 And again, I like answering people's podcasting questions. 101 00:12:24,000 --> 00:12:31,000 So make sure you comment on all of this and go ahead and let us know because I will answer your podcasting questions. 102 00:12:31,000 --> 00:12:34,000 But this podcast is value for value. 103 00:12:34,000 --> 00:12:44,000 And what does that mean? That means that if you received any value from this podcast, from this episode, I just ask that you assign a value to that and give that back to me. 104 00:12:44,000 --> 00:12:46,000 That can be a monetary value. 105 00:12:46,000 --> 00:12:52,000 That can be some time that can be some talent and or again, monetary being being treasure. 106 00:12:52,000 --> 00:12:54,000 So time talent, treasure. 107 00:12:54,000 --> 00:12:58,000 I ask that you assign a value and return it to me. 108 00:12:58,000 --> 00:13:05,000 So a couple of ways that you can do that financially, if you want to help financially support the show is you can go to newpodcastapps.com. 109 00:13:05,000 --> 00:13:08,000 You can listen to our show in a new podcast app. 110 00:13:08,000 --> 00:13:13,000 And the cool thing about that is you can get notified depending on the podcast app that you're using. 111 00:13:13,000 --> 00:13:18,000 You can get notified when we go live and you can listen live right in the podcast app. 112 00:13:18,000 --> 00:13:19,000 That's really cool. 113 00:13:19,000 --> 00:13:23,000 So pod verse is a good one for that to listen live in. 114 00:13:23,000 --> 00:13:28,000 And again, you can send us boosts and send us a boost is just a message. 115 00:13:28,000 --> 00:13:32,000 I sorry, a financial donation financial financial. 116 00:13:32,000 --> 00:13:37,000 You're giving us a little bit of financial and that has a message attached to it. 117 00:13:37,000 --> 00:13:39,000 So you can write in your podcast app. 118 00:13:39,000 --> 00:13:46,000 You can hit boost, send us a small amount of of Satoshi's, which are small amounts of Bitcoin. 119 00:13:46,000 --> 00:13:48,000 Nothing to be scary about scared about. 120 00:13:48,000 --> 00:13:51,000 It's really super easy and send us a boost with that. 121 00:13:51,000 --> 00:13:57,000 If that's not your way of doing things, if you don't want to get a new podcast app, 122 00:13:57,000 --> 00:14:01,000 if you don't want to try and figure out sending small amounts of Bitcoin, 123 00:14:01,000 --> 00:14:07,000 you can also join me at buy me a coffee.com/podcastanswers. 124 00:14:07,000 --> 00:14:13,000 And that will allow you to send a one-off donation or monthly donation. 125 00:14:13,000 --> 00:14:17,000 So again, that's buy me a coffee.com/podcastanswers. 126 00:14:17,000 --> 00:14:25,000 And that will allow you to, to give a little bit of money and help financially back to this show. 127 00:14:25,000 --> 00:14:33,000 Guys, this has been a great episode and I really enjoyed being able to, to whenever I come up with a new podcast name, 128 00:14:33,000 --> 00:14:41,000 trying to figure out what, what is that podcast is going to be about and exactly what the name is going to be. 129 00:14:41,000 --> 00:14:48,000 So guys, thanks for hanging out with me this week.
