Hello and welcome to the Choosing Happy Podcast.
Speaker AIt's Monday myth busting time, and today we're looking at the tough love trap.
Speaker ASo grab a brew because we're dismantling that myth that's probably sabotaging your success without you even realizing it.
Speaker AIt's the idea that being harsh with yourself gets you better results.
Speaker ASomething that I know only too well.
Speaker AAnd here's the uncomfortable truth.
Speaker AYour inner critic isn't your motivational coach.
Speaker AIt's your saboteur.
Speaker ASo stay tuned for today's Choosing Happy Podcast.
Speaker ALet me share something real with you.
Speaker AFor years, I believed that the harder I was on myself, the better I'd perform.
Speaker AI'm sure you know the voice.
Speaker AYou're not good enough.
Speaker AYou should be further along.
Speaker AYou could do better.
Speaker AEveryone else has figured it out.
Speaker AAnd I thought this was discipline.
Speaker AAnd it wasn't discipline.
Speaker AIt was mental bullying dressed up as motivation.
Speaker AHere's what actually happened.
Speaker AThat harsh inner vice didn't make me work harder.
Speaker AIt made me anxious, exhausted, stressed, and more likely to procrastinate because everything felt overwhelming.
Speaker AAnd research backs this up.
Speaker ASelf criticism is directly linked to burnout, depression, and actually worse performance over time.
Speaker ABut here's the kicker.
Speaker AWhen I started treating myself with the same kindness I show a good friend facing a challenge or even a client, something extraordinary happened.
Speaker AI didn't get lazy or soft.
Speaker AI got braver.
Speaker AI took more risks, bounced back faster from failures.
Speaker AI showed up more and yes, achieved more.
Speaker ASo here's what the science tells us about this myth.
Speaker AFirst, your unconscious mind doesn't know you're motivating yourself.
Speaker AIt just hears the message I'm not good enough on repeat and starts believing it.
Speaker ANegative self talk literally rewires your brain for anxiety and self doubt.
Speaker ASecondly, self compassion actually increases motivation, not decreases it.
Speaker AStudies show that people who treat themselves kindly after failures are more likely to try again, to work harder and then achieve their goals.
Speaker AThirdly, that tough inner voice might give you a short term push, but it isn't sustainable.
Speaker AIt leads to burnout, procrastination, and eventually giving up entirely because everything feels like a threat to your self worth.
Speaker ASo here's your experiment for this week.
Speaker AI call it the Inner mental Switch.
Speaker AStart this week with day one to two, simply noticing your inner critic.
Speaker AWrite down one harsh thing you're regularly saying to yourself.
Speaker AJust awareness.
Speaker AFirst, on day three to four, when you catch that voice, ask would I say this to someone I care about?
Speaker AIf the answer's no, it's not motivation, it's sabotage.
Speaker AOn days five to seven Rewrite that critical voice as your inner mentor.
Speaker AInstead of you're rubbish at this, try this is challenging and you're learning.
Speaker AWhat's one step forward?
Speaker ARemember, high standards and self compassion aren't opposites.
Speaker AYou can want to improve and treat yourself with kindness.
Speaker AIn fact, that combination is what creates sustainable success.
Speaker ASo if this myth has been running your life, you're not alone.
