How To Write A Powerful Introduction For Your Book

[00:00:00] How many times have you heard the saying, the first impression is the best impression. Today's episode, I'm going to go into what it takes to write a powerful introduction for your non-fiction book because the fact about that statement is it not only holds true in the people we meet, but also in the books we write. The introduction of your non-fiction book really serves as the gateway to a powerful experience for someone who's going to read your book, your introduction is what's really gonna shape your reader's expectations.

[00:00:29] And it really determines whether or not they'll continue reading. So you want to make sure that it's going to be as powerful. It can be from the start. So, how do you write a solid introduction? Well, First of all, let's define what a brilliant introduction does. A brilliant introduction has the power and also the flexibility to engage intrigue and set the tone for the expertise you deliver inside your book.

[00:00:54] So I'm going to go a very 10 step process, which is how to write a solid introduction from the beginning to the end, because I think it is really important to break all these. Down for you. So step one is to always begin with a hook. The opening sentence is really your opportunity to grab the reader's attention and to essentially hook them in.

[00:01:14] So your hook could be a surprising fact. Uh, it could be a thought provoking question or maybe a compelling anecdote, a story that's happened in your life. Now here's the hook for my first book, the six pillars of a rewarding life. I'm going to read it out to you. We all have certain memories that stay with us. Some are good and others, we prefer to forget. Those memories, give us a sense of continuity. As we move through time, they provide details of who we are and who we want to be. The title of this introduction is called what got me here. You may even notice that I haven't even started referring to my own experiences yet because I want the reader to think deeply and relate to those memories.

[00:01:54] They have. Always remember that a nonfiction book takes your reader on a journey. So make them king to begin that journey with you from the very first sentence. Step number two is to establish relevance. So after hooking your Raiders, now's the time to establish why your topic is relevant. For this to happen, you need to address potential questions.

[00:02:19] The reader may have before they read further, such as why should they care about your topic? How does it relate to their life and interests? You should really then try to connect the topic to a broader context or real-world scenario to make it easily relatable and significant. Now you want to make it easy, as easy as possible for the reader to relate.

[00:02:39] , so, for example, if you're writing a book about climate change, you might start by discussing the recent weather events to communicate why climate change is relevant, or maybe you're writing a book about being productive in the office. So you acknowledge the increase of employees working from home and how it's shaped off its culture. Whatever it is, you want to make it as easy as possible to relate.

[00:03:01] Step number three in writing a powerful introduction is to state your purpose.

[00:03:05] What's the main argument in the introduction you want to convey. Use the purpose you have as a roadmap for what your reader can expect to learn and discover throughout your book. Because a clear statement of purpose helps your reader understand the value of your book. For instance. If you're writing about being productive in the office, your introduction could outline the aim of helping others achieve more in less time while maintaining a solid work-life balance. Don't be afraid to get specific because in your purpose, you want to hit the reader's pain point and answer their questions. Step number four is to build intrigue. You want to introduce curiosity and even a sense of mystery.

[00:03:49] That's going to encourage the person, reading your book to learn more and to read on a good way to do this is to tease ideas and concepts that you'll introduce later in the book. So drop hints that you tell a personal story that helps the reader problem solve. When you create a sense of curiosity, you keep readers engaged and wanting answers.

[00:04:11] Fiction books do this really well, but historically it's forgotten in nonfiction writing. Be someone who doesn't forget because it is a really powerful way. To build in tree to keep your reader engaged and to really solve their problem.

[00:04:25] Step number five is to showcase your authority. It doesn't make sense to tell your reader halfway through your book, why you're qualified to write it. So you've got to build the trust off the bat. Readers are more likely to trust and invest time with knowledgeable and reliable people. So you want to influence your knowledge early on. So briefly share some qualifications, you have experiences or reasons why you're a credible source in your subject or what you're writing about. If you're writing a book about building an online business, give the reader some confidence in why they should listen to you. It could be how many clients you've helped or other streams of credibility.

[00:05:05] Use your authority as a way to build trust. Now let's just take an example from my book published to impact. I wrote in my introduction. I went on to write my second major book, evolve your skills, which came in as a number one bestseller on Amazon eclipsing. The number 13 rank I achieved from the six pillars of rewarding life. After I published evolve your skills.

[00:05:28] I turned to book coaching where I now help ambitious people like you, right. Publish and launch their book with the aim of making an impact in your personal and professional life. So you can see how I've used my previous best-selling books and the fact that I've written, published a book as a way to help you trust me and to build that authority and credibility in what it is I'm trying to convey to you and what I'm trying to teach you throughout this book. So don't be afraid to showcase your authority in your introduction, because it is an important part of building that trust with your rectum.

[00:06:03] So now we move on to step number six in writing a powerful introduction. Step number six is to set the tone. So what's your voice going to be like . You want to match the tone of your introduction or the tone of your writing style? With the rest of the book. So. Is your book going to be a conversational narrative? Will you. Right. Humorously or lightheartedly. Your introduction should really give you or give your readers a glimpse into how that will be spoken to throughout the rest of the book

[00:06:33] they want that consistency throughout. Because it's going to make your book easier for them to read. And don't be afraid to use personality in your introduction as well. Authenticity is what's going to create meaningful impact and relationships with your readers or with your potential clients.

[00:06:50] Step number seven is to be concise. The challenging part of writing your introduction is the temptation to try and fit everything in. Don't make your introduction overly long, because you want to aim for a balance between sharing what's essential and maintaining your reader's attention span. If you're going to put all of your words down in the introduction and really have nothing left to give throughout your book, you may as well not bother.

[00:07:17] Your introduction is really the setup for what's to come. So keep it clear, keep it concise and make sure your reader's not going to be overwhelmed or lost in the content of your book. And this is going to lead right into step number eight,

[00:07:30] because step number eight is you want to bring up subtopics

[00:07:33] If you're nonfiction books going to be covering multiple sub topics or chapters, which I assume that they would be. You want to gloss over them in the introduction. You don't want to give away again too much information, but you want that clear in that concise nature of what the reader can expect. So provide the preview for your readers and help them understand the structure of your book.

[00:07:56] Even though your table of contents is going to let them know what's coming up. Your introduction clearly communicates the structure. Alongside your personality because what's going to happen is the Raiders are going to anticipate what's coming next as well. Again, in my introduction and published to impact. I provide a subtopic in the introduction, which is titled how this book is set up. So, what I do is I'm laying the outline for the book for the radar. To. Help let them know what's to come.

[00:08:25] So part one is writing a book. So I talk about the first section of what the reader can expect. I then go on to part two, which is publishing a book. So they can expect to learn how to publish a book, which is very different from writing a book. And then finally, part three. Is how to launch a book again, different from writing a book and different from publishing a book, I let the reader know how to launch their book.

[00:08:47] So my book is essentially in three parts and I outline that in the introduction because that's going to help the reader know. What they can expect when they read my book.

[00:08:57] And then we move on to step number nine, which I think is a really important part of an introduction. Step number nine is to paint a picture. One of the best ways to maintain your reader's attention is to use descriptive and vivid language paint, a mental picture that allows them to really visualize your topic.

[00:09:17] You might be describing a scenario or explaining a concept. You want to use language or really can really immerse themselves in. And create a memorable reading experience.

[00:09:28] So in published to impact I write. Of course, there are going to be challenges without challenge. There's no growth, but when you write and publish a book, you feel liberated, you know, you've put the work in and the butterflies you experiencing putting your book out in the world is a special feeling. Especially when your rate is tell you how your book has helped them, that feeling lives forever.

[00:09:49] So I ask you again, what are you passionate about? What drives you to make an impact in this world? I hope published impact inspires you to make a difference because you owe it to yourself to turn your idea into something that lives long after you're gone. . Now is the time to write your book.

[00:10:03] So, as you can hear, I've really painted a picture of what the book can do to you as the, as the writer and the author. And how it can help your readers as well.

[00:10:15] Because if you did pick up my book, published impact to start reading it. It's because you want to write and publish a book

[00:10:21] and I try and create that picture at the backend of my introduction.

[00:10:25] And then finally we move on to step 10. This is where you want to revise and refine your intro. You want to get clear up, but you don't want to overthink how you write your introduction. So when I write my books or write an introduction with all of the elements that I've spoken about in the previous steps, and then I'll move on to writing the actual book. Because as I write, I gain more clarity in answering the Raiders potential questions and you will be able to do that too.

[00:10:53] I mean, think about writing down your goals and how much beneficial Willie is to typing them out, as opposed to writing them out. You start getting more clarity through the written word and that's the same. That's why people journal on a paper with a pen. They don't journal on the laptop because it's a really powerful way to create the clarity inside of what you want to do.

[00:11:13] So, yeah. As I write, I gain more clarity in answering the reader's potential questions. And the strongest introductions are those that are edited after writing your book. So use your introduction as a draft, and then once you've completed the draft manuscript, go back to it and finesse it.

[00:11:32] And I guarantee, you know, exactly how to revise it, to make it a powerful introduction. Because like I said before, as you're writing your whole book, you start to gain more clarity. You start to gain more clarity in what it is you're trying to convey and how you're going to convey it.

[00:11:46] And as I always say, Never edit as you go.

[00:11:51] Because it's a sure fire way to second, guess your writing ability

[00:11:54] So let's now recap the 10 steps of writing, a powerful introduction. Step number one was to begin with a hook. So this is your opportunity to grab their rate as attention. Step number two is to establish relevance.

[00:12:07] Why is your topic relevant today? Why should it be brought up? Why should it be listened to.

[00:12:13] Step number three is to state your purpose.

[00:12:16] So you want to create a clear statement of purpose that your reader is going to understand? And you're going to bring the value of the book to your reader as well. Step number four is to build intrigue. So create mystery. Give a little teaser of what's to come in your book.

[00:12:32] That's going to bring more readers in and they're going to continue reading.

[00:12:36] Step number five is to showcase your authority. So you want to list out why you're qualified to write your book were all qualified to write books. I don't want you to think that you're not qualified.

[00:12:46] But this is where you want to establish that you are one or two steps ahead of your ideal reader and you want to tell them why you are that person to help solve their problems. Step number six is to set the tone. So create your voice, decide what narrative you're going to be using throughout your book. Are you going to use more personality? But be present in the actual tone that you use.

[00:13:10] Step seven. Be concise. So I always recommend short, sharp sentences as well. They are more powerful than long-winded overwhelming sentences. So try and aim for short and sharp and to be concise. Step eight is to bring up the subtopics. So if your book is going to be in three parts, like published to impact my book is. You want to map out those three parts?

[00:13:33] So the reader understands what they're going to read throughout. This is essentially where you want to describe the journey that you're taking the reader on.

[00:13:41] Step number nine is to paint a picture. So really give vivid descriptions

[00:13:45] of what your reader can expect once their problem is solved and also what they can achieve through the problem solving process.

[00:13:54] And step number 10 is to revise and refine. So do this at the end of your manuscript. Once you've written the manuscript, write a draft introduction, then move on to your manuscript and revise and refine. Once you come back to the introduction after you finished. So as you can see, there's an art to writing a really solid introduction and like anything related to a good book, you need to plan your introduction out.

[00:14:18] So remember to be concise, but have depth and start with a solid hook and set the stage for what's to come. By using these 10 elements, You can master the art of an introduction. That's really going to leave a long lasting impression, hooking your Raiders from the get-go.

[00:14:34] So that's all I've got for you today. Thanks very much for listening. I will list the 10 steps of a powerful introduction in the show notes as well. So you can have a look there. And until next time or chat to you soon.
