You know those days when you're crossing tasks off your list, but it all feels scattered, like you're moving fast, but not really getting anywhere?
Speaker:That's because focus isn't just about doing the work.
Speaker:It's about setting yourself up before you start.
Speaker:Today I want to share a simple, three step approach that will help you get into the flow.
Speaker:No hacks, no tricks, just small changes that work together to make a big difference.
Speaker:We've all been there.
Speaker:You sit down, ready to work, and instead of diving in, your mind is all over the place.
Speaker:Maybe it's email, random distractions, or overthinking where to start.
Speaker:It's not that you're not motivated, you just haven't set the foundation yet.
Speaker:Without clarity, the right setup, and a way to anchor your energy, even the most productive people can feel like they're stuck in chaos.
Speaker:And honestly, that's when the stress starts piling up.
Speaker:Getting into flow doesn't just happen, it's something you create.
Speaker:In this episode I'm gonna share a simple three step process that brings together your mindset, your workspace, and your energy to help you approach your day with clarity and control.
Speaker:These small intentional shifts can completely change how you work and how you feel while you're doing it.
Speaker:I'm Amin Ahmed and welcome to Be Well, Do Well.
Speaker:A few months ago I had one of those days where nothing seemed to click.
Speaker:I sat down with this massive to do list, fully intending to crush it, but instead I just spun in circles.
Speaker:My desk was cluttered, I didn't know where to start, and everything seemed to distract me.
Speaker:Emails, notifications, you name it.
Speaker:Even my hot cup of tea, which usually is my secret weapon, wasn't doing the trick.
Speaker:By lunchtime, I felt totally drained and frustrated, like I hadn't accomplished anything.
Speaker:That's when I realized the problem wasn't my workload, it was how I started my day.
Speaker:I hadn't set an intention.
Speaker:My workspace was a mess, and I was jumping into tasks without preparing myself.
Speaker:It felt like I was trying to start a marathon in flip flops.
Speaker:So, I stopped.
Speaker:I cleared off my desk, paper, random notes, all of it, grabbed a fresh cup of tea, and decided on just the one thing I wanted to focus on for the next hour.
Speaker:And you know what?
Speaker:That small reset completely changed the tone of my day.
Speaker:Since then, I've made this a daily ritual.
Speaker:It's my way of setting myself up mentally, physically, and emotionally to dive into my work, and it's a game changer.
Speaker:Today, I want to show you how you can do the same.
Speaker:Let's talk about why this works.
Speaker:First, setting an intention.
Speaker:Studies show that even 60 seconds of defining your goal can improve your focus and performance.
Speaker:It engages the planning part of your brain, so you're not just reacting to whatever pops up.
Speaker:I remember hearing James Clear and Cal Newport, my two favorite authors, talk about this in an interview.
Speaker:They both emphasize how clarity at the start of any task is key to avoiding distractions.
Speaker:Next is your environment.
Speaker:There's research from Princeton that shows clutter literally competes for your attention.
Speaker:It's like your brain is constantly scanning the mess instead of focusing on what matters.
Speaker:In that interview I mentioned earlier, Cal Newport calls this your context of work.
Speaker:A quick tidying up, even if it's just moving a few things off your desk, sends a signal to your brain.
Speaker:It's time to focus.
Speaker:And finally, energy.
Speaker:this one is my favourite.
Speaker:James Clear talks about how small rituals, like making your coffee or tea, can act as mental triggers.
Speaker:Furthermore, a study in Frontiers in Psychology found that these rituals can ground you and help you transition into focus mode.
Speaker:For me, it's tea.
Speaker:Or, more specifically, a chai.
Speaker:Just the act of brewing it clears my mind and gets me ready to dive in.
Speaker:When you combine these three, intention, environment, and energy, you're not just working smarter, you're creating a space for clarity and control.
Speaker:And honestly, it feels so good when everything just clicks.
Speaker:Okay, so let's break this down and make it really actionable.
Speaker:Here's how you can put these three elements, intention, environment, and energy, into practice today.
Speaker:First start with intention.
Speaker:Before you jump into your next focus block, pause for a minute and ask yourself, what's the one thing I need to accomplish to make this time feel successful?
Speaker:And as a bonus, pair it with a Pomodoro timer and commit to just 25 minutes on that one task to see how much progress you can make.
Speaker:It's amazing how setting a short, focused time frame can boost your productivity.
Speaker:Next, let's tackle your environment.
Speaker:Take a quick look around your workspace.
Speaker:Is there anything that feels distracting?
Speaker:Papers?
Speaker:Random stuff?
Speaker:Maybe even yesterday's coffee mug?
Speaker:Spend two minutes clearing it up.
Speaker:You don't have to Marie Kondo your entire desk.
Speaker:get rid of the visual noise and take it one bite at a time.
Speaker:Clear a little bit right now and then maybe you can get back to it in the afternoon.
Speaker:Trust me, it's such a relief when you've got a clean space to work.
Speaker:And finally the fun part, energy.
Speaker:And no I'm not talking about having Red Bulls, and this doesn't have to be complicated.
Speaker:Make your favourite coffee or tea or even grab a glass of water.
Speaker:The key here is to turn it into a little ritual.
Speaker:Not just something you rush through.
Speaker:Take a moment to enjoy it.
Speaker:Like I mentioned earlier, for me, it's my daily chai.
Speaker:Something about the process of making the chai, adding the spices, Putting in a little bit of non dairy creamer.
Speaker:It just clears my head and gets me in the zone.
Speaker:When you do these three things together, you're not just preparing for work, you're creating the ideal setup for flow.
Speaker:And honestly, when you make this a habit, you'll wonder how you ever worked without it.
Speaker:Getting into flow doesn't have to be complicated.
Speaker:It's really about a few intentional shifts that work together.
Speaker:You don't need a whole new system or a fancy setup.
Speaker:Just a minute to set an intention, a clean and tidy workspace, and a small ritual to help you transition into work mode.
Speaker:These little changes might seem complicated, but when you combine them, they create a powerful foundation for clarity and ease.
Speaker:You'll find that work feels less chaotic and more aligned, and that's when the real magic happens.
Speaker:Here's my challenge for you.
Speaker:Before you set up your next focus block, take just five minutes to set yourself up.
Speaker:Clearing your workspace, setting an intention, and grabbing your favorite drink.
Speaker:Notice how these small steps can completely shift your energy and help you approach your work with more clarity and control.
Speaker:Try it out and let me know how it works for you.
