[00:00:00] Intro: It's around the house when it comes to and renovating,

[00:00:23] Intro: this is around the house.

[00:00:27] Eric Goranson: Welcome to the round, the house show. This is where we talk home improvement every single week. Thanks for joining us today. This is kind of a new chapter and around the house today, we're gonna be making a few little changes here to the show and I. You noticed it's just me on the show today.

[00:00:45] Eric Goranson: Well, Caroline is gonna be stepping over into a contributor role with the show. We're gonna be bringing on some changes here. She has tirelessly worked for about a year and a half on around the house, putting in a massive effort [00:01:00] every single week. And I cannot say thank you to being such a great cohost over this time, but you know, she's busy too.

[00:01:08] Eric Goranson: She has. Amazing business going. And she is very busy with that. So try not to stretch her too thin, cuz she's got so much stuff on her own side to be doing. We're gonna be changing the format of the show a little bit. What we're gonna be doing is we're gonna be bringing in instead of a single cohost to me, we've got contributors are gonna be coming on.

[00:01:30] Eric Goranson: So I'm gonna be bringing in the best of the best, including Caroline. So she'll be back again. This is not a goodbye by any means, but we're gonna be mixing it up a little bit. We're gonna be bringing in different people as a co-host and rotating through. So, you know, every. Six eight weeks, probably you'll see a person rotate through and we're gonna have a great time talking about all these different subjects.

[00:01:53] Eric Goranson: And we're gonna try to even expand the discussion here and really get some different viewpoints, which is gonna [00:02:00] be a lot of fun. We are trying to really make sure that you've got all the information to be the caretaker home. Now. You want to be a good caretaker at home. So we're gonna be trying to get through all that information about your house.

[00:02:14] Eric Goranson: Now, it doesn't matter if you're a homeowner, maybe you just got your first house or you're a contractor out there. We're also gonna be bringing some education for you as well. So we'll be hitting on both of these, like we do every single week, but we're gonna do a little bit more. Of a wider range here.

[00:02:29] Eric Goranson: So not only we been talking about woodworking, we'll be talking about furniture building. We're gonna be dealing with stone. There's a lot of different thing. Exterior work there is going to be even a wider range. So if you're thinking about taking on a project, we'd love to hear about what project.

[00:02:45] Eric Goranson: You're thinking about tackling so we can get you that information. So if you've got requests on projects that you want to hear us talk about in detail and around the house, make sure and head over to the website around the house. online.com hit that contact us page right there, and [00:03:00] you can get ahold of me and we'll see what we can do to get you that information.

[00:03:04] Eric Goranson: Now we've also got around the house show on Facebook and around the house nation. We have been that has been growing hand over fist, recently, lots of new people coming. And so we're gonna be sharing up a lot of stuff over there as well. And as well as, uh, around the house gonna be on TV this next year, we'll see a lot more content coming up on video and television coming up.

[00:03:25] Eric Goranson: So there's gonna be a lot of cool new things happening between now and February of 2023. So stay. Tuned to that, but really on the format of the show, you won't notice too much of a change in that. We're gonna have a few more people rotating through. We're still gonna have our interviews of all those people out there, including what's coming up this weekend and around the house, there's gonna be a lot of fun, Caroline and I are gonna be talking about aging in place in the first hour.

[00:03:51] Eric Goranson: We're gonna be talking about how to make sure you got that home, that multi-generational home, or maybe you're in the home you wanna live in for the rest of your life. What can you do? [00:04:00] To make it be a little easier for you to navigate decades or maybe years down the road, whichever it is. So we'll be talking about that.

[00:04:07] Eric Goranson: And then an hour, number two, we've got a fun one. This is gonna be great. We've got Jeremy Barker. He is with Murphy door and bed company, you know, Murphy beds, say the ones that's fold up, fold down great for small spaces. Great for that multi-use space where maybe it's a zoom meeting office and a guest bedroom or whatever.

[00:04:27] Eric Goranson: We've got him on the show this weekend. And he's got an amazing story. As I starting out as a firefighter, creating these Murphy doors. And then building this into a world renowned company. So there's a lot of great stuff going on there. And so a few other things you're gonna see here as well with this, you're gonna see a little bit different content coming in.

[00:04:47] Eric Goranson: And the fun part is, is I'm. Gonna be really pushing ahead with some new stuff that I can't wait to show you. I plan to be doing some more live stuff. So you're gonna see stuff on video content. You're gonna see us doing [00:05:00] some more stuff where you'll be able to watch us record the show and you'll be able to.

[00:05:04] Eric Goranson: Tune in via the web and, uh, even ask questions in the middle of it. So we've got some big stuff coming around the corner that I'm really excited. So hold onto your hats for that one, as well as some new contests, there's a lot of new stuff coming on as we grow around the house. So this is just some of these growing things that we're doing and, uh, it's gonna lead to more information for you out there.

[00:05:26] Eric Goranson: And that to me is super exciting. You know, on other news, uh, this got sent over to me, which is absolutely amazing stuff. This is the lows. Basically their contractor report, which is really cool. So this is the state of the probe annual report. So it's about contractors and Lowe's, really's got something kind of cool going on here with this report.

[00:05:49] Eric Goranson: It's something that I'm gonna start paying more attention to. They've done a really good job with it. There's a lot of information in it, but the stuff that gets fascinating to me is for instance, [00:06:00] they have a chart that's got motivations for home improvement projects. and what's funny is the difference between gen Z millennials and of course, older generations, gen X boomers, silent gen, those kind of people.

[00:06:12] Eric Goranson: What's interesting is the motivations to remodel on your house and do some projects. 23% of them. Younger generation is thinking about improving remote work. That's the motivation. While 24% update for energy efficiency, 22 ad tax smart home, 16% make home age friendly. Like we're talking about this weekend and 26% big jump there.

[00:06:41] Eric Goranson: Entertain family and friends, that kind of stuff. 17% say make space for more family members, 27% repair, structural damage. That's a big. 19% update to fit all stages of life and 18% make more pet friendly. So, which is kind of cool [00:07:00] on the top. Homeowners, all generations, top six motivations for home improvement projects.

[00:07:05] Eric Goranson: Number one, improved designer style. 40% of the people said that number two, modernize my home, 31%. Number three, make better use of my space who doesn't wanna do that. Number four, increase the financial value of my home and number five, increase functionality and number six, customize my home for my needs.

[00:07:26] Eric Goranson: And I think that is one of the biggest ones, you know, for motivation over time is just, you wanna make it your place. I mean, that's what I did. And I'm sure that's what you wanna do too. So 58% of homeowners completed a DIY project during the pandemic and 65% of homes say they planned to complete a DIY project in 2022.

[00:07:49] Eric Goranson: And for DIY projects, 33% worked on a bathroom. 31% of kitchen, 31% landscaping, 22% bedroom, [00:08:00] 20% living room. So interesting stuff here. Now, attitude towards DIY is kind of funny. This is an interesting one as well, cuz uh, you know, this is where people get burned on projects, so they're over their skill level.

[00:08:12] Eric Goranson: So it's kind of interesting. So here's the, the graph on this next time I need home improvement work done. I'll leave it to the pro. 51% of it said they agree 24% disagree in the last 25%. Well, they didn't agree or disagree. I have O I have overestimated my own ability to complete a DIY project. 45% of the people agreed with that with 33 disagree.

[00:08:36] Eric Goranson: And then the last one here, I've regretted taking on a DIY project instead of hiring a professional 38% congrats. You DIYers out there 41% said they. Which is pretty cool. So, uh, you know, it's, it's interesting stuff. Um, and there's a lot of information on pros here too. So if you're a contractor on there, you know, 74% of the [00:09:00] pros agree that they rely on their team more than ever before and 75% say their job has been more challenging since the beginning of the pandemic.

[00:09:07] Eric Goranson: And I don't think it takes a study. To tell you that. So that's kind of interesting. Um, the top three exciting tool advancements for pros, number one, battery operated, power tools. Number two, distance measuring lasers. That has been huge for me over the last five to seven years. And then number three, gear for my work vehicle being more efficient in working clean there.

[00:09:28] Eric Goranson: So just shows you how that battery stuff has gone and changed the world of construction for. Homeowners and for pros out there. So that to me is a lot of fun and there's a lot of stuff going on here. So homeowners deciding factors between bids from two pros. This is a good one for you out there. Better communication.

[00:09:49] Eric Goranson: 66%. Says that, uh, that's a big de deciding factor for the older generation gen Xers boomers, silent generation. [00:10:00] Younger generations says 46% strong references. 65% in the older generation, younger ones, 41. So those, your two biggest ones right there, strong references, better communication. And the rest are kind of small, you know, virtual online quotes.

[00:10:17] Eric Goranson: In the twenties digital project, rendering twenties, virtual online customer service twenties, older generation. That was 8%. They didn't care a bit 18% virtual online scheduling 18%. And of course, interactive project trackers. Interactive. Stuff's not really connecting yet with homeowners. If you look at it, that's not part of the decision making process.

[00:10:41] Eric Goranson: So that's an interesting one there too, for all of our pros and friends out there. So it's interesting. I'd love to see some of these studies. I'm not gonna go through this whole thing, but there's a lot here. I'll post a link up on social media with it, where you can check out over and around the.

[00:10:54] Eric Goranson: online.com. Um, actually, no, I'll put it over on the, on the Facebook page, around the house show [00:11:00] and you can find it over there. So you will see here just to kind of wrap our arms around this. You'll see the, the logo change a little bit. The, the cartoon's gonna come down and better reflect what the new show is gonna be.

[00:11:11] Eric Goranson: It's gonna be the same show with just some different flavors to it, and we'll still be contributing and I'll be contribut. And all of our friends here will be contributing to get you more and more information because we want to get you everything you need to take care of that house. So you'll see some visual changes on stuff, but don't worry.

[00:11:30] Eric Goranson: We're still gonna have a great time over here and, uh, have fun doing it. Speaking of having fun. I'm looking forward to Friday, cuz we've got, uh, not Thursday, Friday this week gonna be hanging out with my friends at keen utility. So I'm gonna be doing their little, uh, social media event, which is gonna be fun.

[00:11:47] Eric Goranson: Maybe make my own boots. Get to do a little blacksmithing, hang out with a bunch of great friends, uh, that are out in the industry on social media. So make sure you follow the social media channels around the house show and, uh, you'll see it [00:12:00] there, Facebook, Instagram, those kind of things. And we're gonna have a lot of fun.

[00:12:04] Eric Goranson: And again, special. Thanks to my good friend, Caroline. Bozoki America's healthy own expert Chi. Has been on this show for so long and, uh, we'll have her back on again soon. So, uh, stay in tuned for that. But, uh, we've got a great show ahead this weekend. Like we talked about everybody have a great rest of the week.

[00:12:23] Eric Goranson: Let it be productive. Enjoy it. It's a short one. Weekend's right around the corner. And as always. Thanks again for listening to around the house,
