Speaker:

- Cyril Brizard is synonymous with...

Speaker:

Your own marketing talks about

Speaker:

where aesthetic meets functionality.

Speaker:

And we've been familiar as a company

Speaker:

with your craft, your art.

Speaker:

You're the only real...

Speaker:

I guess, all these cigar manufacturers

Speaker:

that we've been talking

to are artists in a sense.

Speaker:

But you're truly doing things

Speaker:

with building humidors

and accessories for this-

Speaker:

- With a lot of passion for what I do.

Speaker:

A lot of excitement.

Speaker:

I've been doing this

for almost 25 years now,

Speaker:

and I just feel that every

day is like a new day.

Speaker:

And every day, I wake up like a toast,

Speaker:

and excited about what the

new project is gonna be,

Speaker:

and what the new leather...

Speaker:

The new woods that I'm going to find,

Speaker:

the new designs that

we're gonna come up with,

Speaker:

because I enjoy what I do passionately.

Speaker:

I happen to really enjoy the

people of the cigar world

Speaker:

who are people who have a

passion for life to start with.

Speaker:

And, you know, cigar is a bond...

Speaker:

In fact, a medium for a

lot of people to connect,

Speaker:

and the one thing that

a lot of cigar-smokers

Speaker:

have in contact is the

passion for the good life.

Speaker:

And when you have a

passion for the good life,

Speaker:

the good food, the good drinks,

the pretty-looking things,

Speaker:

and you address to a clientele of people

Speaker:

that appreciate nice things,

you are happy, you know?

Speaker:

You're happy because you're

making things for people

Speaker:

that recognize the work, and the effort,

Speaker:

and the research, and the

attention to the details

Speaker:

that goes into making a product.

Speaker:

So we're not doing anything

Speaker:

in mass production at our company.

Speaker:

We have the same team, the same people

Speaker:

for the last 20 years,

Speaker:

and they're getting better

and better every year,

Speaker:

that's the thing, there's no rotation,

Speaker:

it's just people that...

Speaker:

Where maybe one was a stitcher,

Speaker:

and one was a leather assembler,

Speaker:

and they have learned

to do something that...

Speaker:

They know they are irreplaceable, and-

Speaker:

- So you're...

Speaker:

So for people to go and

see what you create,

Speaker:

where do they go?

Speaker:

- Well, it's not open to

everybody, okay? (laughs)

Speaker:

My factory is...

Speaker:

I have a...

Speaker:

My main factory of all

the final assembling,

Speaker:

and all the work of...

Speaker:

Leather work is in California,

it's in Canoga Park.

Speaker:

And my humidors are made actually

Speaker:

on the other side of the

border by a team of women.

Speaker:

And the factories can be visited-

Speaker:

- [Person] So is there a website that

Speaker:

they can visit,

Speaker:

I go to "Brizard..."

Speaker:

What's the line for it?

Speaker:

It's "Brizard..."

Speaker:

- "Brizardandco.com."

Speaker:

- "Brizardandco.com."

- "Brizardandco.com", and...

Speaker:

- So I went there this morning,

Speaker:

I spent time looking at

a variety of products,

Speaker:

a variety of accessories, a

lot of beautiful humidors,

Speaker:

but a lot of...

Speaker:

Just sheer beauty.

Speaker:

I mean, the time, and the thought,

Speaker:

and the intention that goes

into this is just remarkable.

Speaker:

- Well, thank you very much for...

Speaker:

It's always a pleasure to hear people

Speaker:

recognizing the beauty

there is in our product.

Speaker:

When you go to our website,

Speaker:

you will see the products individually.

Speaker:

You will be able to see the lighters,

Speaker:

and the cases, and the humidors.

Speaker:

If you go to my Instagram,

Speaker:

you will be able to see my collections.

Speaker:

- And that Instagram is...?

Speaker:

- It's "brizardandco" as well, yeah.

Speaker:

- Okay. I will be adding you in a moment.

Speaker:

- B-R-I-Z-A-R-D-A-N-D-C-O,

"@brizardandco."

Speaker:

And on my Instagram, you

will see all the collections

Speaker:

because one of the unique

things about my company

Speaker:

is that all the products that we create

Speaker:

are designed to match with each other.

Speaker:

So we have collections for golfers,

Speaker:

the Augusta collection

Speaker:

that is using Aston Martin

leather, and green...

Speaker:

Forest green leather, and

we have leathers that we...

Speaker:

In our own factory, we deboss the leather

Speaker:

with the patterns of a

golf ball, for example.

Speaker:

And so, we create a collection

Speaker:

that's completely articulated

around the spirit of golfing.

Speaker:

We also have collections of

ostrich in various colors,

Speaker:

we have antique saddle ostrich,

that would be your cowboy...

Speaker:

You know, luxury cowboy finish.

Speaker:

And we have some more

fancy ostrich where...

Speaker:

You know, blue, and we just did recently

Speaker:

something for Carlito

Fuente in an orange ostrich.

Speaker:

I use Cayman alligator, I use

American alligator as well,

Speaker:

I did a collection for [S.T.] Dupont

Speaker:

that was made with American

Mississippi alligator.

Speaker:

But whenever we create a

collection, it's always...

Speaker:

You can get all your accoutrements,

Speaker:

you know, your case, your cutter,

Speaker:

your lighter, your humidor,

of the same finish.

Speaker:

And every product, we care

to not have only a good case,

Speaker:

but every product we have is...

Speaker:

From a functionality standpoint,

Speaker:

and in aesthetics, but

functionality as well,

Speaker:

we try to get the absolute best products

Speaker:

that we can incorporate into our lines.

Speaker:

- You talk about passion,

and it's intriguing.

Speaker:

Our mission as a company is

to protect people's passions.

Speaker:

So, with our beginnings

in the cigar industry,

Speaker:

the music industry subsequent to that,

Speaker:

and the cannabis industry

relatively recently,

Speaker:

catering to people's passions,

Speaker:

being conscious of what people value,

Speaker:

and giving them the opportunity to enjoy

Speaker:

at a level that's unprecedented,

Speaker:

that's really the ethic behind

Speaker:

our 27 years of history as Boveda.

Speaker:

So the parallel between your

ethic, and your taste...

Speaker:

- So we probably started

about the same time.

Speaker:

27 years, yeah. '96.

Speaker:

- Yeah, '97 for us. Yeah.

Speaker:

- '97 actually.

Speaker:

'96 was a thinking process,

this is how I started-

Speaker:

- What were you doing before this?

Speaker:

- Well, I was manufacturing

high-end leather kits.

Speaker:

Tell you this story, I was manufacturing

Speaker:

very high-end leather

kits that I was filling

Speaker:

with all miniature sizes of amenities

Speaker:

for luxury cruise lines

and private jet industries.

Speaker:

And I was importing from France

Speaker:

all the finer products

from Van Cleef & Arpels.

Speaker:

Oscar de la Renta.

Speaker:

Yves Saint Laurent.

Speaker:

And I happened to be, one day,

Speaker:

at a yacht show in Fort Lauderdale

Speaker:

when one of the yacht owners

Speaker:

that owned a 150-foot yacht said,

Speaker:

"You're making these beautiful,

Speaker:

beautiful leather kits for our amenities,

Speaker:

but I travel with my

cigars in a ZiplocĀ® bag",

Speaker:

and I said, "Can you make

me a travel humidor?"

Speaker:

And I thought, "A travel humidor,

Speaker:

I've never heard about

a travel humidor before,

Speaker:

I've smoked cigars since

I was 18 years old,

Speaker:

but I never heard about it."

Speaker:

So I quickly came up with a prototype,

Speaker:

and I was needing, at

that time, a humidifier.

Speaker:

And that humidifier...

Speaker:

I locally found a company that...

Speaker:

It was a French humidifier, it was...

Speaker:

Brand was Credo.

Speaker:

And the company was this little company

Speaker:

that owned a very big brand,

Speaker:

it was Romeo Y Julieta.

Speaker:

That company got bought

Speaker:

by a company that later became Altadis.

Speaker:

And I was looking for a humidifier,

Speaker:

and they asked me and said,

Speaker:

"We can distribute your product."

Speaker:

And I said, "Why not?"

Speaker:

Because I don't have nobody

in the cigar industry.

Speaker:

And so, they said, "How many

do we need to order it?"

Speaker:

I said...

Speaker:

I pulled a number, said, "A

thousand pieces, no problem!"

Speaker:

And I said...

Speaker:

So I got an $88,000 order,

Speaker:

and I walked up and did a

happy dance on the street,

Speaker:

and a week later, it was so easy,

Speaker:

I came up with a different size,

Speaker:

and they gave me another big order,

Speaker:

so now I've got over

$100,000 in an industry

Speaker:

that I've never done anything!

Speaker:

And so, I started manufacturing,

Speaker:

and this is one of the

most honorable company

Speaker:

that I've ever met, because

once the company got bought,

Speaker:

after they were bought,

they actually decided

Speaker:

to discontinue all the accessories.

Speaker:

And they told me, says,

"Hey, we gotta call you,

Speaker:

got some good news and bad news,"

Speaker:

I said, "What is it?"

Speaker:

"Well, the bad news is that our company

Speaker:

is being bought by another company."

Speaker:

It was the end of the '90s,

Speaker:

it was the end of the cigar boom.

Speaker:

All the stores were

basically closing down,

Speaker:

one after the other.

Speaker:

And at that time, I thought,

Speaker:

"Oh, my God, this is the end of it."

Speaker:

But they said, "Don't worry about it.

Speaker:

Whatever we are gonna do,

Speaker:

we're gonna discontinue,

Speaker:

we're gonna buy the whole amount

Speaker:

because we promised you

that we were gonna do."

Speaker:

- Beautiful.

Speaker:

- And the guy was Brad

Winfield, who's actually with...

Speaker:

He's one of the pioneers of, you know,

Speaker:

the cigar industry in

terms of distributor.

Speaker:

And after they...

Speaker:

I thought I was entering this industry

Speaker:

in the amenity business,

Speaker:

one of my partners passed away in France.

Speaker:

And I said, "Wow, this is too bad,

Speaker:

I got so excited about the cigar industry,

Speaker:

and everything is falling apart here."

Speaker:

So I was hanging out

at a Grand Havana Room,

Speaker:

and I met Joey Pantoliano, and he and I,

Speaker:

we started talking about product,

Speaker:

and I came up with the

idea of making a cigar case

Speaker:

that was made with

leather and cedar inside,

Speaker:

and nobody had ever done a case

Speaker:

that was laminated with

cedar at the end of the '90s.

Speaker:

And he said, "You know, if you made a case

Speaker:

with leather and cedar,

Speaker:

you probably would do very well with it,"

Speaker:

I said, "Yeah, but all the

stores are closing down,"

Speaker:

he said, 'Well, let me try,

Speaker:

because my other business

was kind of falling apart,

Speaker:

because my partner had

passed away in France,

Speaker:

and I couldn't get all the supplies."

Speaker:

So I manufactured, like,

300 cigar cases, and I said,

Speaker:

"I'm gonna go start meeting

the retailers directly,

Speaker:

and I'm not gonna go

through a distributor."

Speaker:

At that time, I was 27 years old,

Speaker:

I had a house in Malibu, had

all the toys in the world.

Speaker:

I gave up everything.

Speaker:

I packed 300 cases in the back of my car,

Speaker:

and I traveled across America

on every single highway

Speaker:

to meet every retailer one-on-one.

Speaker:

- Beautiful.

Speaker:

- And the one thing I discovered

Speaker:

is that all these people...

Speaker:

Because the...

Speaker:

I was...

Speaker:

Always had the portraying

of the tobacco industry

Speaker:

being nasty people, you know?

Speaker:

- Stodgy, yeah.

- And all that.

Speaker:

But the cigar business...

Speaker:

The premium cigar business

Speaker:

is a completely different ballgame.

Speaker:

You have people from all kinds of...

Speaker:

All walks of life.

Speaker:

I met people that were

former firemen, policemen,

Speaker:

doctors, and many of them became friends.

Speaker:

And so, I traveled on

Highway 1, Highway 10,

Speaker:

Highway 30, 40, Highway

70, and across the country,

Speaker:

I met all the best cigar shops in America,

Speaker:

and I built a relationship

with them personally.

Speaker:

And this is how my company started.

Speaker:

- Well, and at the same time,

Speaker:

if you visit that many stores,

Speaker:

and you interact with that many people,

Speaker:

you're gaining invaluable

marketing information

Speaker:

to understand what your customers like.

Speaker:

- Absolutely.

Speaker:

And getting in-

- You know, the affinities,

Speaker:

you start to understand

where people are coming from,

Speaker:

and it shapes your attitude

Speaker:

about what you're gonna create.

Speaker:

- It...

Speaker:

I learned a lot and

everything from my customers.

Speaker:

So we only had a cigar case at that time,

Speaker:

and I couldn't make a living

just selling a cigar case.

Speaker:

But in 1999, I met Carlito Fuente,

Speaker:

and I did the first

limited edition for OpusX.

Speaker:

And those were, like,

Speaker:

three limited editions of 999 cigar cases.

Speaker:

And all of a sudden, nobody knew my name,

Speaker:

nobody knew my brand,

but it was co-designed

Speaker:

by me and Carlito Fuente,

Speaker:

and it was a co-branding project.

Speaker:

It had three Reserve

Speaker:

Fuente Natural

Speaker:

Chateau cigars in it,

Speaker:

and everybody wanted

to get the OpusX case.

Speaker:

So at that time, I started

developing my company,

Speaker:

and creating more products,

bringing in humidors,

Speaker:

lighters, cutters, and this is how I went

Speaker:

from making leather kits for amenities,

Speaker:

to a cigar case, to a

line of cigar accessories.

Speaker:

- That's another parallel

Speaker:

between your adventures and our company.

Speaker:

How many stories have I

heard here at the show

Speaker:

about people whose

trajectory was transformed

Speaker:

by interacting with Carlito Fuente?

Speaker:

Carlito's the reason

we're in this business.

Speaker:

I mean, he really was-

Speaker:

- So we have this big thing...

Speaker:

Absolutely.

Speaker:

- He's the first real believer.

Speaker:

He took a chance, and gave us a chance,

Speaker:

and gave us an opportunity,

Speaker:

and we're forever grateful to that family

Speaker:

for the energy that they put in,

Speaker:

the wind they put in our sails-

Speaker:

- He's a wonderful, wonderful soul,

Speaker:

and he is a man who

cares for other people.

Speaker:

He likes to spread the good word, and...

Speaker:

You know, it's interesting.

Speaker:

He was the reason why my company started,

Speaker:

he was always a big supporter,

Speaker:

but we lost contact for many, many years.

Speaker:

Because we're busy, we

say hello at the show,

Speaker:

and all of that.

Speaker:

And about two years ago...

Speaker:

Year-and-a-half, two years ago,

Speaker:

all of a sudden, I'm getting a video.

Speaker:

It's about a 10-minute-long video

Speaker:

where he stands in front of my display,

Speaker:

and he is talking about the fact

Speaker:

that I made him the best project,

Speaker:

that it was the nicest case he's ever had.

Speaker:

- He's building

Speaker:

you up.

Speaker:

- He loved our collaboration,

Speaker:

that our products are beautiful.

Speaker:

And I was like,

Speaker:

"I didn't ask him to do this.

Speaker:

I didn't have anybody asking to do this."

Speaker:

Out of his golden heart,

Speaker:

he basically spontaneously

stood in front of my display,

Speaker:

and for 10 minutes, did

something that's invaluable.

Speaker:

And so now, we have reconnected again,

Speaker:

and we're planning the launch very soon

Speaker:

of a new limited edition for

Black Pink, his new line.

Speaker:

- That's beautiful. Yeah, it's so...

Speaker:

He's just such an encouraging character,

Speaker:

and a big-hearted human.

Speaker:

- Absolutely.

Speaker:

- He's been nothing but wind

in our sails as a company.

Speaker:

So your reputation precedes you,

Speaker:

your affinity for quality,

it really stands apart

Speaker:

from other products in the

marketplace, I'm just...

Speaker:

I'm thrilled to have a

chance to sit with you.

Speaker:

I'm excited to see what

the next chapters are,

Speaker:

especially with what

you're doing with Carlito.

Speaker:

And this industry, there's a whole...

Speaker:

Like, there's a new chapter

in the cigar industry, I...

Speaker:

We had Sans Pereil in for an interview,

Speaker:

and talking about lux cigars,

Speaker:

there's a lot of beauty,

and a lot of passion

Speaker:

that are going into creating products

Speaker:

that are really high-end.

Speaker:

And you're in a great position

Speaker:

to be a source for that type of art,

Speaker:

where art meets functionality, that's...

Speaker:

Or no, where aesthetic

meets functionality,

Speaker:

I think that's the way you said it.

Speaker:

- But to talk about

functionality, you know, we are...

Speaker:

In the project that we are gonna be doing,

Speaker:

we're going to involve Boveda,

Speaker:

but you know that when I

started building humidors,

Speaker:

and manufacturing my own humidors,

Speaker:

I started making the

humidors with Boveda in mind,

Speaker:

I didn't make humidors and then thought,

Speaker:

"Let's use Boveda."

Speaker:

The Boveda humidors were created...

Speaker:

The humidors, my humidors,

Speaker:

were created for the Boveda product,

Speaker:

which I believe is absolutely

Speaker:

the most extraordinary product that can...

Speaker:

That has revolutionized...

Speaker:

And it's the best thing to use to preserve

Speaker:

and keep the perfect

humidity for your cigars.

Speaker:

So we have created these boxes

Speaker:

that are called the "Airflow Humidor,"

Speaker:

because in a typical humidor,

Speaker:

you usually have the humidity

that drops from the top,

Speaker:

and you have to rotate your cigars

Speaker:

in order to get even humidity.

Speaker:

So the way I build my

humidors, on the side walls,

Speaker:

I build latches in order for

all the lower-layer cigars

Speaker:

to have air to circulate around,

Speaker:

and prevent molding

from growing on cigars.

Speaker:

And then, I took the exact

thickness of the Boveda packs,

Speaker:

and I created a tray at the bottom

Speaker:

that's elevated to the exact

level of the Boveda pack,

Speaker:

and I've created, under the lid,

Speaker:

a piece that's made out of solid cedar,

Speaker:

one solid cedar, that's cut

in the center with a screen,

Speaker:

so you can put the Boveda packs as well.

Speaker:

So your cigars are now sandwiched

Speaker:

between two sources of humidity,

Speaker:

they get 360-degree

humidification powered by Boveda.

Speaker:

- Beautiful.

Speaker:

Well, and that's tremendous.

Speaker:

I'm excited to see the outcome.

Speaker:

I...

Speaker:

And I hope that our companies work...

Speaker:

I know you've had close

relationships with people at Boveda.

Speaker:

I hope that we find ways to help edify,

Speaker:

and lift up your art,

Speaker:

and your presentations to the industry,

Speaker:

we'd love to be involved in that.

Speaker:

- Since last year,

every Brizard accessory,

Speaker:

every Brizard humidor that is shipped

Speaker:

anywhere around the world is shipped

Speaker:

with a complimentary

three-to-four months' supply

Speaker:

of Boveda seasoning pack

and humidification system.

Speaker:

- We can't thank you enough for that.

Speaker:

- And I thank you as well.

Speaker:

- I'm thrilled to have the

opportunity to talk to you,

Speaker:

the beauty, go to Brizard & Co.,

Speaker:

look at the Instagram

account, look at the website,

Speaker:

understand what this gentleman has brought

Speaker:

to the cigar industry as far as...

Speaker:

You know, and you really

nailed it when you said,

Speaker:

"It's where the aesthetic

meets functionality",

Speaker:

I mean, they're beautiful products

Speaker:

that people can be proud of,

Speaker:

and really accentuate their

enjoyment of their passions.

Speaker:

It's so lovely to have

a chance to meet you.

Speaker:

- Well, thank you very, very

much for your kind words.

Speaker:

- It's easy, you do beautiful work!

Speaker:

- I always take it to the heart.

Speaker:
