Speaker:

Speaker:

Today's stop.

Speaker:

We are at First Timothy.

Speaker:

This is a field manual for a young pastor trying to stabilize a pressured.

Speaker:

Church, here's some key facts.

Speaker:

The author, we know it's Paul.

Speaker:

Paul is writing this.

Speaker:

The date right around late 63 in the first century to 64.

Speaker:

I kind of put it at 64, just the way it seems to fall.

Speaker:

The audience is.

Speaker:

Timothy leading the church in Ephesus, but we believe this letter is meant

Speaker:

to be heard by the whole church.

Speaker:

In other words, it is specific to Timothy, but it's, it is for

Speaker:

him to carry this message through to the people of his church.

Speaker:

He's giving this young delegate public authority.

Speaker:

In this letter, we believe that Paul was in Macedonia.

Speaker:

Paul mentions leaving Timothy in Ephesus.

Speaker:

When I was going to Macedonia in chapter one, verse three,

Speaker:

the setting is, about 34.

Speaker:

Years since the resurrection, Paul has moved on.

Speaker:

Timothy's been left behind to lead.

Speaker:

Now let's briefly talk about the audience.

Speaker:

Who is Timothy?

Speaker:

First of all?

Speaker:

I love his name.

Speaker:

That's my namesake, so hallelujah.

Speaker:

Let's, just acknowledge that.

Speaker:

But let's look at who Timothy is.

Speaker:

He is Paul's protege.

Speaker:

Paul calls him my true child in the faith.

Speaker:

His mother Eunice, was Jewish, his father was Greek.

Speaker:

He was raised on scripture by both his mother and his grandmother, Lois.

Speaker:

But he wasn't circumcised, which meant he didn't fit neatly into the Jewish world.

Speaker:

Paul did circumcise him so he could minister in Jewish contexts and areas.

Speaker:

Timothy really lived between these multiple.

Speaker:

Worlds, which I think uniquely qualifies him for some of

Speaker:

the things that he will do.

Speaker:

he traveled with Paul through Philippi?

Speaker:

Thessalonika Corinth, Ephesus, when Paul couldn't be somewhere.

Speaker:

He seemed to send Timothy very often.

Speaker:

But Timothy struggled with timidity.

Speaker:

Paul tells him Here, let no one despise your youth.

Speaker:

He's in his thirties.

Speaker:

We believe He's leading one of the most spiritually charged cities in the empire,

Speaker:

and Paul is not in the room with him.

Speaker:

This letter isn't just instruction, it's Paul saying you can do this.

Speaker:

Guard the deposit.

Speaker:

I believe in you.

Speaker:

And he's somewhat endorsing him with this letter in front of the

Speaker:

group that Timothy is leading.

Speaker:

Paul wrote to the same church just a few years earlier in

Speaker:

his letter to the Ephesians.

Speaker:

There, he called them members of the household of God.

Speaker:

Now he tells Timothy how that household should function.

Speaker:

The theology of Ephesians becomes the.

Speaker:

Practice of what we see here in first Timothy.

Speaker:

They connect very well.

Speaker:

This might not be a bad time to go back and reread Ephesians prior

Speaker:

to jumping into first Timothy.

Speaker:

Let's look at some historical context.

Speaker:

We're immersing ourselves in what was going on during this timeframe around 64.

Speaker:

Ad in the first century, Rome Nero is still on the throne.

Speaker:

The empire would be considered stable, but pressure is growing.

Speaker:

Just two years ago, James, the Lord's brother was killed in Jerusalem.

Speaker:

That was more.

Speaker:

The Jerusalem leadership that did that.

Speaker:

But uh, but we're mindful of it as we are listening to this letter.

Speaker:

The church's first martyrdoms are no longer distant history.

Speaker:

They are happening in Jerusalem.

Speaker:

The temple is still intact.

Speaker:

We know now that there was only six years to go before it was destroyed.

Speaker:

The church, Ephesus.

Speaker:

Is a major city.

Speaker:

The temple of Artemis is there Commerce.

Speaker:

There's a lot of spiritual darkness.

Speaker:

Paul spent three years there now, Timothy leads this group alone.

Speaker:

The tension, false teachers are spreading myths and endless genealogies.

Speaker:

Some are drifting.

Speaker:

Timothy feels the weight of leading.

Speaker:

In his thirties.

Speaker:

Why now?

Speaker:

Paul writes practical instructions, who should lead, how the community should

Speaker:

function, what Timothy himself must guard.

Speaker:

Let's look at what you'll encounter in first Timothy.

Speaker:

It's practical and.

Speaker:

Urgent survival structure for a pressured church.

Speaker:

You'll hear about sound doctrine versus myths.

Speaker:

Some want to be teachers but don't understand what they're saying.

Speaker:

That applied in a D 64 and that's still applicable today, 2000 years later.

Speaker:

Prayer for all people is important.

Speaker:

Live peaceful.

Speaker:

Dignified lives.

Speaker:

Qualifications for overseers and deacons be above reproach, able to

Speaker:

teach self-controlled, not greedy.

Speaker:

Paul also gives some household instructions, how different

Speaker:

groups should live and serve.

Speaker:

He talks about care for the widows, honor for the elders practical community life.

Speaker:

Timothy's charge.

Speaker:

Don't let anyone despise your youth.

Speaker:

Set an example.

Speaker:

Keep a close watch on yourself and your doctrine.

Speaker:

Paul mentions the mystery of godliness, and this is a quote.

Speaker:

He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the spirit, seen by

Speaker:

angels proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, and taken up.

Speaker:

In glory.

Speaker:

That's chapter three, verse 16.

Speaker:

This is the deposit that Timothy must guard.

Speaker:

That really is the message of the gospel, resurrection, truth, not speculation.

Speaker:

That's guard the deposit, the gospel that was entrusted to you

Speaker:

speaking to Timothy character.

Speaker:

Over charisma doctrine that shapes daily life.

Speaker:

You're gonna be reading over the next two sessions, first Timothy chapters one

Speaker:

through three, and then four through six.

Speaker:

try to read it in one sitting if you can.

Speaker:

After this, we're gonna get to second Peter Peter's Farewell Manifesto.

Speaker:

Remember, resist and wait with Holy Lives.

Speaker:

Don't forget to be following along at K two M Foundation slash NT 90.

Speaker:

Be sharing this with people.

Speaker:

We're heading into the home stretch here, but it's not too late to

Speaker:

invite people along with us.

Speaker:

Now, before we read, let's set the scene.

Speaker:

It is a D 64 Ephesus you've gathered in a home near the harbor, maybe

Speaker:

a dozen of you crowded into a room that smells of oil lamps and sea air.

Speaker:

The Temple of Artemis looms just a mile away.

Speaker:

You pass it every day.

Speaker:

Everyone does.

Speaker:

Timothy stands at the front, unrolling a scroll.

Speaker:

He's younger than most of the elders, and you've seen him hesitate before speaking,

Speaker:

but tonight his hands are steady.

Speaker:

This letter is from Paul.

Speaker:

The room goes quiet.

Speaker:

Timothy clears his throat and begins Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus.

Speaker:

By command of God, our savior and of Christ Jesus, our hope.

Speaker:

To Timothy my true child in the faith, you lean forward.

Speaker:

Paul's voice reaches across the miles, and as Timothy Reeds, you realize this letter.

Speaker:

Isn't just for him.

Speaker:

It's for all of you, all of us instructions for how this household

Speaker:

of God is supposed to work.

Speaker:

Now, let's read
