Speaker:

Hello and welcome to the intermittent fasting gems with Jen podcast.

Speaker:

I'm your host Jen, a middle aged Michigan mama, wife and teacher who

Speaker:

in 2021 stumbled upon this crazy cool thing called intermittent fasting.

Speaker:

And before I knew it, I'd lost 46 pounds in four months and

Speaker:

gained an incredible lifestyle filled with complete food freedom.

Speaker:

If you're hungry for unique, no nonsense fasting tips that actually

Speaker:

work, you're in the right place.

Speaker:

So whether you're walking the dog, folding that last load of laundry, or

Speaker:

cruising to your nine to five, let's start fasting our way to freedom together.

Speaker:

So today we are chatting with Laura Wilson from Pennsylvania.

Speaker:

Hey, Laura, how you doing?

Speaker:

Jen, I'm good.

Speaker:

How are you?

Speaker:

Great.

Speaker:

So, Laura is a fourth grade teacher and Laura and I met last summer on a cruise.

Speaker:

She was with her sweet mom, Elaine.

Speaker:

It's Elaine, right?

Speaker:

Is it Elaine?

Speaker:

Eileen.

Speaker:

And I was with my husband, Barry.

Speaker:

We had a really awesome time hanging out all week on the cruise.

Speaker:

We even got to meet a celebrity, Robert Neary.

Speaker:

He was kind of like the entertainer on the cruise.

Speaker:

Um, so since we were both teachers, Laura and I found out that we had lots

Speaker:

in common and she was a little bit curious about intermittent fasting.

Speaker:

So we spent the week chatting about it.

Speaker:

And when she got back home from the cruise, she quickly joined my email

Speaker:

list and she got into our, so what if with Jen Facebook group right away.

Speaker:

And she started her.

Speaker:

Intermittent fasting journey.

Speaker:

So welcome, Laura.

Speaker:

I am so excited to chat with you today.

Speaker:

And if you're ready, we're, we're going to start out with a bang and I'm going to

Speaker:

ask you what have been your top three wins with intermittent fasting, whether that's

Speaker:

weight loss or improved sleep energy.

Speaker:

Go ahead, Laura.

Speaker:

Yeah, so my top three wins, um, really have to do with weight loss.

Speaker:

I've lost 20 pounds and, um,

Speaker:

gosh.

Speaker:

went from, I was kind of a size six, eight in pants and, um, have

Speaker:

gone down to a solid four, sometimes a two depending on the store.

Speaker:

And, um, You know, I just really feel like myself again.

Speaker:

Um, I was always lucky.

Speaker:

I was pretty thin growing up.

Speaker:

Didn't really have to worry about what I was eating, but as I was getting into

Speaker:

my thirties, you know, I was slowly gaining weight and just for years now

Speaker:

haven't felt like me and had tried a lot of different things, but with

Speaker:

intermittent fasting, it just felt easy and I feel so good about myself again.

Speaker:

Oh, that is fantastic.

Speaker:

Um, okay.

Speaker:

So, so weight loss, you feel more like yourself.

Speaker:

Anything else?

Speaker:

Um, yeah,

Speaker:

any, like, um, anything that doesn't have to do with weight loss, any, uh,

Speaker:

non scale victories, like with energy or anything that you've noticed?

Speaker:

Yeah, energy.

Speaker:

Ha, ha, ha, ha.

Speaker:

the day, um, I don't get that after lunch slump, you know, I just can feel

Speaker:

Sure.

Speaker:

level all day.

Speaker:

Okay, so let's talk about, uh, what is your main or your, like,

Speaker:

preferred intermittent fasting, method or schedule, whether that

Speaker:

be, like, I do primarily OMAD.

Speaker:

I do a little bit of a hybrid, but OMAD What, what works best for you, Laura?

Speaker:

I guess I fall into the OMAD category, um, typically like a 20 hour fast,

Speaker:

four hour eating window, um, It kind of just happened because I'm a teacher.

Speaker:

I do work a lot and I'm at school just

Speaker:

Sure.

Speaker:

you know, maybe six o'clock at night.

Speaker:

So it just kind of happened.

Speaker:

It would basically be when I got home, then I would start eating and it kind

Speaker:

of typically fell in a four hour window.

Speaker:

So about, like, what time would that be, that, so you fast all day while

Speaker:

you're at school, which I found was super easy when I was teaching.

Speaker:

Um, you know, yeah, you're so busy anyways that it did not even bother

Speaker:

me to have my black coffee and my tea and just go about my business

Speaker:

and not even worry about lunch.

Speaker:

Um, so when you get home, about what time do you break your fast?

Speaker:

I guess it's between maybe like 6.

Speaker:

30, 7 o'clock is when I would start eating.

Speaker:

Um, and then just know, have that last, I love iced

Speaker:

Sure.

Speaker:

I would be putting stevia in my iced tea during my eating window.

Speaker:

Um, or just when

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

sip of iced tea I had, or maybe a glass of wine.

Speaker:

So, you know, that would typically be around like 10 o'clock at night

Speaker:

before getting ready for bed.

Speaker:

Awesome.

Speaker:

Do you use a, um, a, a fasting tracker, like to track your

Speaker:

fast at all, or an app, or?

Speaker:

I'm like a old school, maybe not too old school because it's on my phone, but the

Speaker:

notes app in my phone, I just have a note for each month and I just label it what

Speaker:

week I'm on with my intermittent fasting.

Speaker:

I write down my weight for that day and um, You know, I calculate my

Speaker:

eating window and my fasting window.

Speaker:

That's just how I keep track of it.

Speaker:

That's a really great tip and I, I think for a lot of people, myself

Speaker:

included, I'm not very techie.

Speaker:

So you have to just find what works for you.

Speaker:

And I, I mean, I have Google Docs up the, you, up the yin yang,

Speaker:

like I have so many Google Docs, but that's just like my thing.

Speaker:

And I also, I take screenshots to remind myself of things.

Speaker:

Maybe a recipe or something like that, um, that I want to try and go back.

Speaker:

I'm not so good about cleaning them out, but I'm gonna work on that.

Speaker:

Um, but I just, I think that's, that's just super important to find, you

Speaker:

know, whether it's, you know, a tech savvy thing or whatever, um, something

Speaker:

super simple, like, like you just said, you know, your notes app to.

Speaker:

figure out what works best for you.

Speaker:

So what would you say is your biggest challenge with intermittent fasting?

Speaker:

Um, it's funny.

Speaker:

I don't really have a challenge in the actual fasting, but it's when,

Speaker:

um, people have asked me about it.

Speaker:

I feel like some people can be very judgmental.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

Oh, yes.

Speaker:

and I was at a And I was eating, you know, it was during my eating

Speaker:

window and I do make exceptions.

Speaker:

You know, if I'm going to go for brunch with a friend, of

Speaker:

course I'm going to eat brunch.

Speaker:

Absolutely.

Speaker:

it just kind of came up in conversation like, Oh, Laura's lost a lot of weight.

Speaker:

And, and I don't really like talking about it, but all eyes

Speaker:

were on me and I started to.

Speaker:

share about intermittent fasting and one of my friends who I consider

Speaker:

a good friend was like, Oh, well, of course you're losing weight.

Speaker:

You're eating like a toddler.

Speaker:

And I was just like,

Speaker:

Oh, I haven't heard that one.

Speaker:

I've heard some good ones.

Speaker:

That's it.

Speaker:

Wow.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

yeah, I was so upset and it.

Speaker:

Does make me not really want to talk about it because I feel like I am

Speaker:

Mm

Speaker:

from a lot of people.

Speaker:

If, if people ask and I can tell they're genuinely interested, I will

Speaker:

start to tell them and I'm like, you know, I can talk about this all day.

Speaker:

Like if, you know, let me know.

Speaker:

I kind of leave it in their

Speaker:

hmm.

Speaker:

know?

Speaker:

Mm-Hmm.

Speaker:

Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I had the same thing.

Speaker:

I mean, I really struggled with the comments for, you know, eight, 10

Speaker:

months, probably the first year.

Speaker:

And, um, it made me sort of bashful about talking about it to other people.

Speaker:

I mean, these were, like you said, good friends and family members who, well,

Speaker:

of course you're going to lose weight.

Speaker:

You're starving yourself.

Speaker:

You're,

Speaker:

hmm.

Speaker:

you know, it just got to the point where I, I backed off until I just kind of.

Speaker:

Let them see that I was actually, they could see I was actually

Speaker:

eating a lot and enjoying my life.

Speaker:

And, um, you know, it was, it was something.

Speaker:

It's just hard for people, I think, a lot of times to, to say, Oh my gosh,

Speaker:

and that's what they always say.

Speaker:

Oh my gosh, you go 20 hours without eating.

Speaker:

I mean, that's mind blowing to people.

Speaker:

So, but, all right.

Speaker:

So let's talk about, um, your eating and your fasting windows.

Speaker:

Let's, let's start with, uh, fasting hours.

Speaker:

So we know you fast all day until, um, you open your eating window.

Speaker:

So what, like, clean, do you fast clean basically as far as, um,

Speaker:

not putting any, okay, great.

Speaker:

So what, um, drinks, clean drinks do you enjoy while you're fasting?

Speaker:

Like at school, at work, whatever.

Speaker:

Oh,

Speaker:

the crazy part to a lot of people.

Speaker:

I really only drink green tea all day.

Speaker:

That's it.

Speaker:

that's awesome.

Speaker:

a coffee drinker.

Speaker:

I have tried many

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

the years.

Speaker:

I even tried again doing the intermittent fasting and I just really do not

Speaker:

like the taste of coffee at all.

Speaker:

So, um,

Speaker:

So,

Speaker:

I'm not really sure why, but that's what I do.

Speaker:

Um, every now and again, I think from your tips, I've tried the

Speaker:

sparkling water and, um, um, Yeah,

Speaker:

Not a fan?

Speaker:

it's okay, but

Speaker:

It's okay.

Speaker:

I'm good

Speaker:

Well, I know.

Speaker:

green tea.

Speaker:

So, um, that's all

Speaker:

So the green tea That is awesome because not only does it have, you know, tons

Speaker:

of amazing benefits, health benefits, um, and it does help, you know, with

Speaker:

weight loss and things like that.

Speaker:

But another thing that people don't really realize about green tea is it

Speaker:

really helps with freshening your breath.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

I don't know if you've gotten kind of like that metallic, like

Speaker:

when your body goes into ketosis and all that, I'm not going to.

Speaker:

Go into all the science of it because I don't totally understand

Speaker:

it myself, but, um, if you're, that's one of my big tips for people too,

Speaker:

when they say, Oh, my breath is bad from this fasting and it happens.

Speaker:

Oh, it, it has been something I really struggled with.

Speaker:

Green tea is one of the best, uh, drinks that you can have

Speaker:

to, to fight against that.

Speaker:

So that's really awesome.

Speaker:

I've been

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

the breath that I've asked my, my fiance a few times and he's like, no, you're good.

Speaker:

So I don't know if that's, that's doing it, but

Speaker:

So, um, I know this might seem like a silly question too, but

Speaker:

do you have the green tea hot?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Cause I actually, it's really strange.

Speaker:

I don't know how I figured this out, but when I was, um, first trying to,

Speaker:

you know, kind of experiment with different clean fasting drinks, I

Speaker:

put the sparkling mineral water with the green tea and had it cold and it.

Speaker:

It is super duper good.

Speaker:

Like I absolutely love it.

Speaker:

So, um, yeah, I generally do that, you know, a couple of times a week

Speaker:

too, during my, my fasting hour.

Speaker:

So, um, okay, so let's move to the fun part, the eating.

Speaker:

Ooh, so, um, what do you, what kinds of foods do you,

Speaker:

I mean, Are you a vegetarian?

Speaker:

What types of meals do you enjoy?

Speaker:

What do you like eating during your eating window?

Speaker:

Um, I'm a regular meat eater and, um,

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

I'm a pretty basic eater.

Speaker:

Um, so typically I just, I've always just kind of enjoyed like, you know,

Speaker:

thrown chicken in the oven, salmon steak.

Speaker:

So I'm no chef, um, but it's just kind of sticking with those few

Speaker:

proteins and having vegetables.

Speaker:

Broccoli is my go to.

Speaker:

So my, yeah, my typical dinner is usually salmon and broccoli, chicken and broccoli.

Speaker:

Um, if I want to get a little crazy or I'm really lazy, I'll just throw

Speaker:

like some chicken pieces in a bowl with like salsa and guacamole.

Speaker:

Um, So I do stay away from carbs as much as I can.

Speaker:

Um, it's typically

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

and veggies, um, for my dinner.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

Sure.

Speaker:

you know, if I get home from work and I know I don't have time to cook right away,

Speaker:

but I'm really hungry, my snack, a lot of

Speaker:

Mm hmm.

Speaker:

just quickly make some scrambled eggs.

Speaker:

Um, also my kind of, What I feel is a real treat is one, a tip I

Speaker:

got from you, because I have always

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

chips, like chips and dip,

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So I have given up,

Speaker:

My husband, too.

Speaker:

I've, that I never have chips,

Speaker:

up?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

pork rinds, um, yeah, love them.

Speaker:

And I,

Speaker:

It's amazing, isn't it?

Speaker:

I love to have, uh, we have taco salad a lot and instead of the

Speaker:

tortilla chips, I crumble some of the, they have like jalapeno ones

Speaker:

and a bunch of different flavors.

Speaker:

I crumbled those on top to get the crunch in the taco salad.

Speaker:

So, oh, so what do you like?

Speaker:

Just the plain one pork rinds or there's no carb or really little carbs.

Speaker:

is, um, a salt and pepper one.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

Oh, I've seen that.

Speaker:

I haven't tried it though.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

like called Southern Country Recipe.

Speaker:

I think that's what it's called.

Speaker:

That's my favorite.

Speaker:

It's got a good

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Oh, yummy.

Speaker:

Oh, good tip.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Yeah, I think I, um, we make those.

Speaker:

Um, I have that, um, on my recipe site.

Speaker:

It's the pork rind, uh, chicken nachos.

Speaker:

My husband, that's what my husband, he loves nachos.

Speaker:

So, and like I said, I was trying to break him of the, the

Speaker:

chips and you know, all of that.

Speaker:

So we, we make that quite often.

Speaker:

Um.

Speaker:

So what, what do you typically, uh, like to break your fast with?

Speaker:

So that first bite of food after you've been fasting all day, what do you do?

Speaker:

Sure.

Speaker:

So for a long time at the beginning, the first few months when I was doing this, I

Speaker:

Mm hmm.

Speaker:

religious with your fasting break fasting

Speaker:

The, the apples, the apple cider vinegar.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

find, um, from my, you know, tracking of everything, was, Two weeks early on that

Speaker:

I had lost like three pounds, four pounds.

Speaker:

When I started using your drink, I was blown away.

Speaker:

Um, I got away from

Speaker:

I know it's crazy.

Speaker:

Did, did you, did you like it?

Speaker:

I mean, at first,

Speaker:

spicy.

Speaker:

It

Speaker:

bad.

Speaker:

to it.

Speaker:

Um, but yeah, I liked it.

Speaker:

And

Speaker:

What were you mixing it with?

Speaker:

Like the sparkling mineral water?

Speaker:

your favorite

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

the ginger lime.

Speaker:

Is that?

Speaker:

I like lime and ginger and lemon.

Speaker:

Lemon.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's my favorite.

Speaker:

um, yeah, just lemon, just lime, that kind of base.

Speaker:

Okay, yeah, fruity stuff I find it tastes, oh, not so good, but, um,

Speaker:

in the regular water, I can't do it.

Speaker:

It's terrible.

Speaker:

I don't know how it changes the taste so drastically, but for some reason it does.

Speaker:

So, so I'm sorry, did you say you, so now you've kind of gotten away from that.

Speaker:

think what was happening was it would take me probably a good half hour

Speaker:

to drink the drink, um, and there

Speaker:

Yeah,

Speaker:

I was getting home and I was like, I need to eat right now.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

sure, sure.

Speaker:

happened.

Speaker:

convenience.

Speaker:

Now, are you making the, the cubes up ahead of time?

Speaker:

you know what,

Speaker:

It's

Speaker:

I went out, I even bought,

Speaker:

okay.

Speaker:

you recommended to make it in the

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

what is the,

Speaker:

Oh, the, the molds, the silicone molds.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

never made it.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Oh, okay.

Speaker:

Well, that's my, that's my tip.

Speaker:

I, uh, go at the beginning of the month and I make up a whole batch for the

Speaker:

whole month so that you can just pop them right out of the, the freezer.

Speaker:

And then all you have to do is add the sparkling mineral water because it's

Speaker:

already, it already has the lemon juice.

Speaker:

It has the spices and the Bragg apple cider vinegar.

Speaker:

So

Speaker:

it, especially now that it's summer for me and I've got my wedding coming

Speaker:

up, so I wouldn't mind, you know,

Speaker:

yeah,

Speaker:

lose a

Speaker:

absolutely.

Speaker:

I do really, I have to say I was tracking too, and it, it makes a difference.

Speaker:

So, um, so how about when you're closing your eating window, when

Speaker:

you're ready to say, so long, I'm ready to stop eating and enter into

Speaker:

my next fasting window, what do you.

Speaker:

Like.

Speaker:

You know, do you have a healthy dessert or anything that you

Speaker:

enjoy kind of closing that up with

Speaker:

Um, nothing, yeah,

Speaker:

with?

Speaker:

really.

Speaker:

It's just like I was saying

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

just usually the last sips of what I'm drinking.

Speaker:

Um, I'm not a huge dessert person, but sometimes I do get into kicks.

Speaker:

Where, um, you know, I'll have a little bit of ice cream or even

Speaker:

like some peppermint patties.

Speaker:

So, you know, I think

Speaker:

Oh, good.

Speaker:

do love about the fasting too, that you can still eat what you want within reason.

Speaker:

Um, you know, so,

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And not feel deprived.

Speaker:

And yes, absolutely.

Speaker:

I think that was, that's for me by far one of the best benefits because

Speaker:

every fat diet and crazy diet I went on, I just felt so deprived.

Speaker:

And.

Speaker:

I never, I mean, I do not end my eating window feeling hungry at all.

Speaker:

I just feel completely satisfied.

Speaker:

So

Speaker:

I did, I do have sometimes if I am getting ready for bed and I still

Speaker:

feel like hungry, you recommended

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

bars.

Speaker:

I forget.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

Oh, you mean the Keto, the Keto, the, or the coconut fat bombs?

Speaker:

The,

Speaker:

ones I buy the think the think

Speaker:

oh, Think, yeah.

Speaker:

Think Keto.

Speaker:

I like those.

Speaker:

Oh, that, yeah.

Speaker:

They have a bunch of flavors that are really good.

Speaker:

The thing I like about those is I've noticed, um, like with some of

Speaker:

the kind of bars that have the, uh, sugars that are artificial sugars.

Speaker:

Or whatever.

Speaker:

Um, but these, it doesn't have as much in there or something because some of those

Speaker:

make me, Oh, they make me a little gassy and they give me kind of a stomach ache.

Speaker:

Um, but the Think Keto ones do not do that.

Speaker:

They have a great like flavor to them.

Speaker:

And so yeah, those are really nice too.

Speaker:

Uh, awesome.

Speaker:

So, what is, here's a big question.

Speaker:

I don't know if you know this, but what is your absolute longest

Speaker:

fast that you've ever done?

Speaker:

Um, almost, or was it 24 hours?

Speaker:

And it wasn't even on purpose.

Speaker:

I think I was so busy.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

That happens a lot.

Speaker:

so busy.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

home from work and started doing stuff and yeah, I think

Speaker:

it turned into a 24 hour fast.

Speaker:

Oh, that's really good.

Speaker:

So many benefits after that.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

So, Laura, do you, do you exercise?

Speaker:

And, um, like if you do, what are kind of your favorite ways to, to stay active?

Speaker:

So I hate to admit this, um, but I don't really

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

That's wow, you're one of the lucky ones.

Speaker:

to.

Speaker:

I mean, I want to.

Speaker:

well, I have, I have slowed way down, uh, since I've been in like weight

Speaker:

maintenance and it's just because I'm, busier and also I feel like I'm, getting

Speaker:

older, but, um, So you don't exercise really at all, but you, I'm sure you,

Speaker:

well, as a teacher, you're exercising.

Speaker:

I know that, especially because my room was at the total

Speaker:

opposite end of the school.

Speaker:

So, I mean, you're back and forth and back and forth.

Speaker:

So, and as a teacher and anybody out there who's listening, you know,

Speaker:

teachers are so, so, so, so busy.

Speaker:

So, well, no, that's, that's, that works.

Speaker:

And I have found that I mean, I know for decades, I thought, okay,

Speaker:

I can exercise this weight off.

Speaker:

And no matter how much I exercised, it just, it was, maybe

Speaker:

small wins here and there.

Speaker:

And so I do believe it has, so much more to do, um, with our eating habits

Speaker:

and, you know, things like that.

Speaker:

So yeah, that is another thing I love about, about intermittent fasting,

Speaker:

because even if you don't get much exercise, you really can see.

Speaker:

Mm-Hmm.

Speaker:

results.

Speaker:

So, all right.

Speaker:

Well, Laura, we are almost ready to wrap things up.

Speaker:

So I would like you to end with your shiniest gem.

Speaker:

So what would you say is your very best intermittent fasting tip for success that

Speaker:

you can leave our listeners with today?

Speaker:

Oh, that's a big question.

Speaker:

Um, I guess for me it was, and I know this might not totally be easy all the time,

Speaker:

but it was a real mindset shift that I made that this is a lifestyle, not a diet.

Speaker:

Um, so I think that's just something.

Speaker:

If people are going to try this, they really need to think about it like that.

Speaker:

And as you and I both, like we've over the years tried so many things and I

Speaker:

was always looking for the quick fix.

Speaker:

Um, you know, when I would try something new, if I didn't lose

Speaker:

five pounds in that first week, I was like, well, this isn't working.

Speaker:

And then I would just like completely throw it out the window.

Speaker:

And I remember after meeting you and deciding that I was going

Speaker:

to do this, Cause that was like the end of July we met and I

Speaker:

Sure, yeah, it was, yeah, last summer.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

myself, okay, you're going to do this until Christmas.

Speaker:

Like just, that's what you're going to do.

Speaker:

And so I think once I was doing it, you know, for a few weeks, it really did just

Speaker:

feel like, oh, this is what I do now.

Speaker:

Um, you know, so this is coming up on a year later and this

Speaker:

is, is what I do, you know?

Speaker:

It's your lifestyle.

Speaker:

I know it is.

Speaker:

It's so freeing, isn't it?

Speaker:

Like I just, and, um, I, I love that, you know, once you kind of, like you

Speaker:

said, you have to make that mindset shift in your brain to know, okay,

Speaker:

this really is how I can live the rest of my life and it's a lifestyle.

Speaker:

And, um, I don't know.

Speaker:

It is, like I said.

Speaker:

I say it a million times, but it's not having to worry.

Speaker:

I like on that vacation we were on, you know, I am able to enjoy myself and enjoy

Speaker:

the food and the drinks and it's a cruise.

Speaker:

So you're eating and you're drinking a lot, but to know that all I have to do

Speaker:

is get back on track when I get back with my intermittent fasting schedule and.

Speaker:
