Speaker:A father passing the torch to his son in the faith.
Speaker:This is Seco Create.

Speaker:K two M Foundation forward slash NT 92.
Speaker:Today.
Speaker:We are getting close folks.
Speaker:Today stop is second.
Speaker:Timothy Paul's final letter, a farewell from death row.
Speaker:And I gotta tell you These last few books of the New Testament, two Timothy
Speaker:Revelation, and then our wrap up conclusion will have a lot of historical
Speaker:context so that we can really know all that's going on as the New Testament
Speaker:begins wrapping up so that we can really immerse ourselves in the audience that is
Speaker:getting this information the first time.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:This one might be a little bit longer, revelation might be longer,
Speaker:but, uh, a lot of great info.
Speaker:The author, we know it's Paul and the date is AD 67, which is the,
Speaker:late sixties of the first century.
Speaker:The audience is Timothy and he is located in Ephesus.
Speaker:We are confident that Paul is writing this, we believe from Rome.
Speaker:The setting.
Speaker:It's 37 years past the resurrection.
Speaker:Paul is in a Roman dungeon, not a house arrest from the early sixties where
Speaker:he wrote some of his letters from.
Speaker:This is hardcore prison Execution is.
Speaker:Imminent.
Speaker:He says that himself within the letter.
Speaker:Alright, we got a lot of historical context here, so let's, let's try to get
Speaker:to as much of this as we can in Rome.
Speaker:Nero has left for Greece to perform in games and.
Speaker:Theater.
Speaker:Yes, he's gonna be playing in games and performing in theater.
Speaker:Oddly enough, this is historical.
Speaker:He wins them all.
Speaker:No one, no one will defeat the emperor.
Speaker:Of course, Rome is governed while he's away by a brutal Freedman.
Speaker:The emperor who burned believers as torches is literally singing on a stage.
Speaker:In Greece, within a year, Nero will be dead, but Paul will face the sword first.
Speaker:In Jerusalem, the temple is still intact, but the end.
Speaker:Is in motion.
Speaker:The end of the age, the end times are in motion.
Speaker:Right now, Ian is the leader of three Roman legions and he is
Speaker:in Judea, crushing the revolt.
Speaker:That started about a year before the march.
Speaker:Toward Jerusalem has begun.
Speaker:It's less than three years before the temple and Jerusalem will
Speaker:be destroyed by Roman troops.
Speaker:This is the end of the age.
Speaker:This is the generation that Jesus spoke about in Matthew.
Speaker:24. Paul warns of difficult times in the last days.
Speaker:In chapter three verse one, he's not describing a distant future.
Speaker:Jerusalem will fall in less than three years.
Speaker:The old.
Speaker:Covenant age is being judged and it's ending the crown of righteousness
Speaker:awaits those who love Christ's appearing, the coming of Christ, the
Speaker:revealing of Christ, and he talks about that in chapter four, verse eight.
Speaker:Let's look at the church itself.
Speaker:We've repeated this multiple times, but it's worth saying again.
Speaker:James has been executed.
Speaker:Peter is gone.
Speaker:Paul is about to die of the founding generation.
Speaker:Only.
Speaker:John remains one generation witnessed it all and they wrote it.
Speaker:Down for us.
Speaker:That was what this New Testament was all about, documenting that unique
Speaker:timeframe, the tension that's going on.
Speaker:This isn't house arrest that Paul is under.
Speaker:This is a. Dungeon.
Speaker:Paul was likely, we don't know this exactly, we're speculating some,
Speaker:but he was likely rearrested during Nero's crackdown after the great
Speaker:fire of Rome in AD 64, just a few years before this letter was written.
Speaker:Tradition places him in the Mamertine prison.
Speaker:A dungeon near the Roman Forum for high profile prisoners awaiting execution.
Speaker:He's in chains.
Speaker:We know that in chapter one, verse 16 and chapter two, verse nine, he's cold.
Speaker:We know that in chapter four, verse 13 because he asks for his
Speaker:cloak and he's abandoned by many.
Speaker:We see that in chapter four, verse 16.
Speaker:Ona Forus, Ona Forus.
Speaker:I don't know if I pronounced that correctly.
Speaker:Phos searched hard to find him in chapter one, verse 17, but Paul
Speaker:was difficult to locate isolated.
Speaker:Cutoff.
Speaker:That is a contrast to his imprisonment in the early sixties when he was
Speaker:essentially under house arrest and he seemed to be teaching and preaching
Speaker:and taking visitors the entire time.
Speaker:This is not the same In imprisonment, Paul's death,
Speaker:Roman citizens weren't crucified.
Speaker:They.
Speaker:We're beheaded and we know that Paul was a Roman citizen.
Speaker:Tradition places Paul's execution on the Oste way outside Rome in
Speaker:roughly 80, 67, late 67 or early 68, which will be just a few months
Speaker:within the writing of this letter.
Speaker:He will kneel before the sword next year.
Speaker:In 68, John will see a vision on Patmos, the fall of the harlot city,
Speaker:the vindication of the martyrs, and the victory of the lamb.
Speaker:The audience that this is written to, it is Timothy.
Speaker:Paul's beloved child in the faith.
Speaker:He's leading the church in Ephesus.
Speaker:It's roughly 1400 miles from Rome travel.
Speaker:Took four to six weeks under good conditions by sea and then
Speaker:overland via the apian way.
Speaker:But in winter, the sea shut down.
Speaker:Paul pleads in chapter four, verse 21.
Speaker:Do your best to come to me before.
Speaker:Winter Paul is pleading for Timothy to come see him knowing probably that
Speaker:they will never see each other again if they're able to see each other that time.
Speaker:If Timothy didn't leave soon, he wouldn't make it until spring and
Speaker:Paul might not be there by spring.
Speaker:We do not know if Timothy arrived in time.
Speaker:He may have received this letter while Paul still lived
Speaker:or after the sword had fallen.
Speaker:Either way, in this letter, he is reading the final words of the man who shaped
Speaker:his ministry and truthfully, his life.
Speaker:Why?
Speaker:Now Paul is writing one final letter to Timothy, not instruction like
Speaker:first Timothy, but a farewell.
Speaker:What you're gonna encounter in this letter, second Timothy, is
Speaker:urgent and tender at the same time, A dying man's charge.
Speaker:You'll hear about Fan into Flame, the gift God gave you
Speaker:through the laying on of hands.
Speaker:God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but a power, love, and
Speaker:self-control or sound mind.
Speaker:Don't be ashamed of the testimony or of Paul in chains.
Speaker:That implies that many abandoned Paul while he was in chains in this situation.
Speaker:Guard the deposit.
Speaker:We've heard that before.
Speaker:Guard the gospel that has been entrusted to you.
Speaker:Entrust yourself to faithful people who will teach others also.
Speaker:He talks about the last days difficult times, lovers of self, lovers of pleasure,
Speaker:but continue in what you've learned.
Speaker:Preach the word in season and out of season.
Speaker:Endure suffering.
Speaker:Do the work of an evangelist.
Speaker:Ironic that this is coming from someone who's in a dungeon awaiting.
Speaker:Their death.
Speaker:Finally, he says, I have fought the good fight.
Speaker:Finished the race, kept the faith.
Speaker:The crown of righteousness awaits the torch is.
Speaker:Past now You're gonna be reading two Timothy over two sessions.
Speaker:Enjoy this letter.
Speaker:Immerse yourself in this letter.
Speaker:This final letter that we know was from the man that wrote most
Speaker:of the New Testament from Paul.
Speaker:Put yourself in the shoes of Timothy who is reading this final letter from his
Speaker:mentor, The person that shaped his life.
Speaker:So anyway, read that.
Speaker:In the next episode, we're gonna be wrapping up with Revelation, the
Speaker:revealing of Christ John's apocalyptic vision, written just before the
Speaker:end, Jesus, the reigning lamb, Babylon falling and the call to be
Speaker:a faithful witness under the empire.
Speaker:Those are the messages we'll hear next time in Revelation.
Speaker:Make sure again that you're following along@ktwo.foundation slash NT 90.
Speaker:Get some great information there.
Speaker:Now, before we read two Timothy, picture this, it's late summer.
Speaker:Ad 67, Paul sits in a dungeon near the Roman Forum chains, stone
Speaker:walls, cold and dank, isolation.
Speaker:He knows what's coming.
Speaker:Roman citizens aren't crucified.
Speaker:They're beheaded.
Speaker:The sword is waiting, but Paul isn't afraid.
Speaker:Remember Jesus Christ risen from the dead.
Speaker:That's.
Speaker:The gospel.
Speaker:That's why the sword doesn't have the last word.
Speaker:There's one more letter to write to Timothy, his son in the faith.
Speaker:1400 miles away in Ephesus come before winter.
Speaker:If Timothy doesn't leave soon, the sea will close and Paul
Speaker:May not be here by spring.
Speaker:This won't be instruction.
Speaker:This is farewell, a father passing the torch.
Speaker:Now, let's read.
