0:00
welcome back to catching up with Katie where we sit down we talk about questions that y'all have asked we also
0:06
talk about things that are happening around the farm and then sometimes we just Yap quite a bit so um we are going
0:13
to do a little bit of a catchup we have some questions that Abigail has drawn up from Instagram Facebook YouTube all the
0:19
things and then we are going to do a rapid fire at the end so
0:24
Abigail update I don't know what to do cuz it's like I don't want to just keep talking
0:30
but at the same time you're like just just do the update had quite a few things this week
0:36
was freaking hard um so this week's update I feel like sometimes I'm like ah
0:42
nothing much happened like everything happened I feel like in the last 48 hours so Ginger heard herself uh there's
0:49
a whole video about that and I am waiting on a call from the vet so we might be having to like have an
0:54
intermission in this video um while filming y'all won't even know but her
1:00
baby looks good she looks good as of right now she had have surgery um she
1:05
had a puncture wound that was in the hawk joint and so we had to clean that up and be a little bit aggressive with
1:12
that treatment and then we also had our first calf of the year it was a month
1:18
early it was from a really nice heer of hours named Kiki if you've been
1:23
following me for a couple years then you saw her birth um her mama is one of our best donor cows and we tried our best me
1:31
and my daddy stayed up all night with this little baby tube feeding him we did the Madigan squeeze we were giving him
1:37
all kinds of stuff we had our vet like we were trying our best to get this little boy to live and it just was not
1:44
in the cards for him and so he passed away so our first half of the year was dramatic and hard and it like drains you
1:51
emotionally and it's the worst part of farming um and then on a brighter note
1:57
we also took Annie over to the hor show we are doing that this weekend which is tomorrow where my best friend's little
2:03
girl is going to show her um we also are welcoming Elena and her husband Josh
2:09
back over to the property to come get Glenn and Buzz like there's so much going on this week there is it's not
2:16
even funny I feel like there's stuff that I'm leaving out the shop well is that I would say that's just kind of an
2:24
update because there were so many questions about it that like so casually put in a video I was
2:31
like God this day is sucked the shop almost burnt down you know whatever andever I was like you can't just say that and then not explain it um the shop
2:40
uh which is where like our shop is in three sections so it's the mini barn my
2:46
husband's shop where he like works and then we made basically a little entertainment hangout area and it has a
2:53
kitchen and stuff and so when like it's still in the midst of
2:58
being kind of renovated and they were staining some wood in there and we hired
3:03
a professional to come stain and paint and they put a bunch of stain rags in a
3:10
trash can and it was right next to the electrical panel and we're not sure if it's spontaneously combusted because
3:17
oilbased stain can do that but he swears it was water-based I don't know but it might have just gotten
3:24
heated up from the from the window we're not sure but luckily our GC walked in
3:31
and like in the nick of time put it out yeah so there was no one else there right like everyone had gone home for
3:38
the day yeah no one else was there joh just to come by check on something and
3:43
yeah I I don't know what would have happened it like it was already full of smoke in there we had to leave the doors open for 2 days it still kind of smells
3:51
like I don't know what would have happened like I it's with everything else that's
3:56
happened this past week I've just been like I'm just going to just put this out my head it it didn't burn down so we're
4:02
just going to leave it alone first question while things are never very
4:07
predictable and you kind of have to go with the flow how do you plan to improve and grow your breeding operation it's
4:15
kind of a big one yeah um so we're kind of at a spot right now where like our
4:22
barn is full we are using every pasture we have
4:28
I am trying to improve the barn like we're doing a remodel um like we just
4:34
did the shavings pit like I'm trying to improve the mechanics of everything um making things more efficient and
4:42
definitely improving what we have right now for the mayors that we have right
4:47
now for customers to come watch babies and look at them for fing out for like
4:53
like for everything but I do think the next step in Improvement is
5:00
expansion and not necessarily just to have more horses I think it's just so that like our barn that we have right
5:07
now is like just the folding Barn so that we have bigger stalls um we have
5:13
room like we're not like oh every stall is full you know what I'm saying and so I do think we are going to need another
5:19
barn and another couple of pastures which that's that's a battle because
5:26
while we do have 300 acres only about half of it is pasture and a lot of that
5:31
is used for the cows and cows take up a lot of space we're already Leasing Property to put like heers on and stuff
5:38
and so that's the logistics of it are a little complicated and so that's that's
5:46
definitely in the next two years I would say the barn remodel is going to take a lot of next year but and I don't even
5:53
think the next bar needs to be fancy I think it's where like the year yearlings and 2-year-olds go or like the reips
5:58
that aren't being used go you know it's like where it doesn't have to be fancy they don't have to be fing stall sized
6:06
um but that will also entail probably hiring two more people and that so it's
6:12
it's at a point where I want so badly to improve everything we have going on but
6:17
uh in order to really improve we're going to have
6:23
we're going to have to expand do you see yourself expanding the mini Farm into
6:30
like its own kind of like a bigger piece of
6:35
property I guess just like do you plan on like growing that like with the
6:40
breeding going on over there or I the mini Farm is so new and so like I've had
6:48
dreams of having miniature horses and like getting into that for forever um
6:54
but I'm I would be so happy with like two more Acres of pasture over there and I'd be like cont for a while I don't
7:00
really want to like like my my passion right now is so focused on the big
7:06
horses and that breeding side of things like yes I want to breed quality and so that's why you know with Chandler I'm
7:12
like really listening to him on on which studs to pair with my Mayors and things like that for The Minis but I don't
7:20
think I I don't think I'm at the point where I'm like like I'm pretty content you know um I would love a little more
7:27
pasture space I'm not going to lie but other than that I I think I'm good what are your hopes for seven for the future
7:33
would you want to keep him kind of like bow like a babysitter um I know you're going at his
7:38
speed I love watching his progress It's hard like right now our
7:46
whole want for seven is to be painfree and able to act like a horse so it's
7:55
it's going to depend on how big he gets it's going to depend on just how mobile
8:00
he is like we we were hoping that he can be super steady on his legs and trot and
8:07
caner around the field right if he's like 12 hands and all of my weanlings are that
8:14
big and they're going to be stronger than him MH I don't know that he'd be babysitter quality and that's just for
8:22
him safety wise now I will say the Vets like I'm talking to them constantly they
8:29
are at a point and every I mean things could always turn down right but they are at a point that they are so hopeful
8:36
for him because he is doing so well and because he is getting so much stronger getting so much steadier on his legs um
8:42
he's getting up and down by himself he's on no pain medication you know like there there are lots of hopes for that
8:48
and so I think the main thing there's the call I think the main thing is his
8:54
comfort and we'll we'll kind of go from there but I got to talk to the vet real quick so the phone call was good
8:59
Ginger's looking good I'm probably bringing her home Sunday or Monday and today's Friday so very happy about that
9:05
baby looks great so okay back to normal okay is there from what you can tell
9:11
from your horses a personality distinction with different color horses
9:16
may sound dumb but I know there are some personality distinctions in dogs and
9:22
I've heard people talk about red mares red may I was just about to say red mares have I don't know like they
9:29
they've got this um a stereotype about them that they're spicy and that they
9:35
are sassy and some of my sweetest Mayors are red Mars but also some of my
9:43
sassiest Mars are red Mars um I have I think gray Mars are sassy but at at the
9:50
end of the day I really don't think so I think it's just kind of like red is
9:55
really common in just about every read and I think because Mayors themselves
10:03
are known for being sassy there's just a wider range of red mares yeah to have
10:09
experience with you know what I'm saying so I think that's where it comes from but I mean yeah that's that's the
10:14
stereotype um I think breeds you could probably say oh this
10:21
breed is hot hotter headed or sassier or whatever um there's always going to be people
10:27
that you know like or there's always going to be some that are outliers that don't fit the mold but I I don't think
10:34
realistically color has anything to do with it but there is The Stereotype I
10:39
was I hadn't really thought of it until I saw that but then I was like I wonder if that's true I don't know I mean I
10:45
have like like Erlene is the sweetest thing ever and then
10:51
Annie right so someone asked will you ever do
10:57
some trail riding videos I would like to I just I would like to
11:04
but do you think with I don't know I guess how much
11:09
riding experience do you think someone needs to have to go trail ride I think
11:15
if you're like let's say we go on the farm I think you'd be fine on Annie I think you'd be fine you would not ride
11:22
bow for some reason B is Sassy on the
11:28
trails okay he's 24 years old get like excited mhm so I would ride bow um
11:34
that's the thing is we don't really have a whole lot of horses to trail ride right now now I did I did do a trail
11:40
riding video when we went in Colorado so I rode this uh draft cross named Charles
11:46
and I wanted to bring him home so bad but I didn't and so I did a trail ride
11:52
because he was so slow and I was behind everyone the entire time but um but yeah I think that would be fun it just I
11:59
think it just gets put on the back burner because it it does take a few hours you know Nate who would you want
12:05
to ride don't say Gracie we we had to include okay let me just say we had to
12:10
include Nate on this because he brought his own camera and his own microphone so he could looking for a way to like so he
12:16
could be included I've been trying to think of how to interject myself for 15 minutes uh who would I want to
12:23
ride I would want to ride
12:31
Fred okay well Fred won't be ridden for years future Fred and also he's leaving
12:36
I don't own him anymore okay I would like I well my answer was going to be bo but you told her
12:42
no yeah he's just not a good boy um I would say eth I was going to say Ethel
12:48
yeah Ethel I would pick Ethel she's so sweet and like chill honestly I think you'd enjoy Ethel bearback she's like a
12:55
couch yeah I want to try that okay try
13:00
back we got we right now no shot how do you do anything when you're bear back
13:06
how do you stay on balance core strength don't have it don't have it okay also I'm so mad in
13:15
the last keeping up catching up I keep I keep messing up the name of my own
13:22
segment in the next catching up with Katie or in the last one I said Nate
13:27
insert the photo of you and B here I couldn't find it and you didn't I have it I literally have she has it all you
13:33
have to do is text her I didn't know you you knew that someone had it you knew Matt had it he didn't want to so we him
13:40
and Matt are such dorks they have this thing where anytime they're together and we're doing something they make album
13:45
cover photos where they're super emo looking and serious mat insert the one of Matt in
13:51
Texas like there's a random couple in a Walmart behind him um and so then they like put super filtered coloring over
13:59
over it and he did one on bow he got on bow for a minute if you have it I'll put
14:04
it in this one I have it okay and then I need some like Emo music over it or something I don't know put the one of
14:10
Matt Ino yeah we'll do a little Montage [Music]
14:20
yeah we didn't make one for our music video which sucks
14:25
we we meant to and then there was just like we had so many ideas that never came to like fruition because there was
14:32
just so we literally did it all in like one day we did it all in one day we had to plan for weeks and we we need to we
14:37
need to post the video y'all made on YouTube we need we just need to put it on yeah just for fun I'm down yeah or
14:47
make another one I y'all shouldn't have started that
14:53
because now it's expected what to make another one yes you have have eight
15:00
months n months oh for oh you're talking about every year for your birthday a music video I think the next one though
15:06
needs to be like our own song like we need to write it yes oh we're topping last year okay so back to the question
15:13
who are all the forces that are ridable not considering the pregnancy like when
15:20
they're not pregnant who is everyone that is ridable so Sophie's writable
15:25
here's the thing there are some that are writable that I've just never written they just been pregnant and so like
15:31
Indy's sound and like when I got her from the kill pin they were writing her
15:37
um Willow's rable Maggie's rable Charlotte's rable
15:43
um I know I feel like Maggie will be chill Ethel's rable Annie's
15:49
rideable um I got on Trudy one time and she
15:54
reared up with me so probably not I don't think I would I don't think I would
15:59
um let's see is Happy rable eren's ridable happy's ridable so almost like
16:06
everyone yeah they're all EX show horses I don't know how do you think it would be getting on them when they
16:13
haven't been ridden in so long like does that make a difference sometimes spicy sometimes they're spicy now the
16:20
ones like like if I like I got on earlene last year and before she was
16:26
pregnant she hadn't been ridden in months like like six to eight months I get on her ready go to show perfect it
16:34
just depends yeah it depends Annie if you don't ride her for a couple days she's like I forgot I don't
16:41
know I don't know what that means I'd like to ride Gracie Gracie's writable
16:47
yeah the only one the only ones that are truly not writable is like Beyonce and
16:53
ginger but Ginger isn't necessarily because everyone's like well can't she just do like a kids class but she would
16:58
have have to be broke for that and she was injured as a weanling and so she was
17:03
never able to handle the breaking process to then be considered broke
17:10
enough for a kid to ride so if with with Ginger's injury had she been broke and
17:17
showing prior to this injury she could for sure be like a walking trail horse or like a kids's horse but because it
17:24
was before she was ever written it's it's not in the cards
17:29
is it it's just like the older they get the harder it is or is it just because you can't do it now because of the
17:34
injury it's because I couldn't break her now because of the injury so it like with the amount of like injury she has
17:41
now like she like you can see it every now and then you could totally let a kid
17:46
walk around on her if she was already broke but she couldn't handle the process at this point which 2025 baby
17:54
are you most looking forward to I can't say that why I can't
18:00
decide well you're not saying what your favorite is it's just like which cross do you think are you like the most
18:07
excited for which one are you most excited for I I have to think about this for a minute okay we can think we'll
18:13
both think I'm just going to let me list them off I guess so that
18:19
we know so there's two Beyonce vs code Reds in ginger or I'm so sorry in Gracie and
18:28
Ethel Ginger and Cool Breeze which is a full sibling to Fred and then there's
18:34
Marilyn Monroe in BS code red which Happy's carrying there's Annie and cool
18:39
ladies man that Annie herself is carrying there's a mystery one that we
18:45
will not discuss in this video there's because I haven't told anybody about her
18:50
yet um there's a goody goody gumdrops vs code red one pretty excited about that
18:56
one um I need 's one more who am I forgetting erene and V Code Red I'm I am
19:03
very excited for erene and vs Cod red but okay that's that's your I am the most excited for Annie's baby
19:13
or the goody goody gumdrops one because
19:18
that's Molly's it's Molly's little little sibling uh and the new the I I
19:24
will just go ahead and say this the mystery baby like the mystery Mar that's
19:29
pregnant um the daddy of this baby is not vs code red so it's it's going to be
19:34
it's going to be different so then we'll have three non-bs code red babies next year you don't know who it girlfriend
19:41
use your brain oh the mystery mayor is not vs code red
19:49
no I know who it is who the daddy of the baby is not vs code red I'm pretty sure I know who it is go ahead okay machine
19:57
made uhhuh how did you know that wow look at
20:03
that I I just it's a machine made baby I did not know that had no idea I thought
20:10
you were going to say Denver and I was like no it's not Denver and then I was going to laugh at you cuz I was going to be like
20:15
that's mystery I was excited for you to be wrong and now I just look stupid as we previously disuss I'm
20:23
always right I love okay so you need to chill though cuz on that last video where
20:30
we're like making fun of him for mans spting things and always being right someone in the comments I hate that
20:36
you're outside you know and like whatever and Nate's like I'm on your side I hate that we're outside and so go
20:44
I I commented I let them know that that I actually agreed with them but they said I was wrong hold on I have a
20:51
question for you okay cuz someone I I saw it in the comments so this question says
21:00
this is for Abigail before you began working with Katie did you have any experience with Farm life or all the
21:07
animal experiences or are all of the animal experiences new to
21:13
you mostly new mostly new elaborate 95% new
21:19
elaborate um horses 100% new like never been around horses never knew anything I
21:26
always wanted horses and I always wanted to know how to ride side horses but I was just never like I didn't I don't know I didn't grow
21:33
up in like a place where I could have them I did but we just didn't have I did
21:38
grow up on a farm my grandparents uh my granddad was
21:44
a farmer and um they had cows my whole life and we lived basically on their
21:51
farm so they were like right beside our house so I've been around cows a lot but like not
21:58
I knew they were there I didn't know I didn't know what like the purpose of them being there was um never really
22:05
been around goats uh we did have donkeys we had two
22:10
donkeys like my whole life what were their names um Jane and Lizzy that's
22:16
cute Jane was lizz's Mom and she was brown and Lizzie was gray um and we did
22:22
ride them some when I yeah they were full siiz me and my sister rode them some when I was younger but but um no
22:31
never I don't know it's pretty but you did start off in college as animal science I did and we so my freshman year
22:40
I did animal science and we had class at like MTSU like dairy farm they like beef
22:47
cattle farm they had a swine farm that we went to we did go to the horse
22:53
Science Center so like I did stuff like that but I had initially done animal
22:59
science more for domesticated um animals like dogs cats
23:04
that type of thing so when I saw that the program was more like agricultural based I changed my major cuz I wasn't
23:10
into it at the time but now I kind of wish I had just kept it and like gone through with it I feel like it would
23:16
have been really useful I don't know that's it what do you think about
23:22
it now like after you've been here a full year like this weekish is a year of
23:28
you working here yes so like what's your thoughts on working with animals now like what's your I
23:34
don't know just give us your general idea of like you did not expect to work with animals in livestock obviously cuz
23:41
you changed your major so now I I enjoy it for the most part there are sad parts
23:49
that I don't love but sh um you're like I don't like
23:57
talking about myself um I feel like I've kind of gotten used
24:02
to it though not desensitized to it like the got easier yeah the calf yesterday I
24:10
feel like initially I would have been like crying seeing it and like wanting it to live which obviously I did but in
24:18
my head I was just kind of like I know that this isn't meant to be
24:24
and this is something that happens and like it's okay and right so I was I was okay but like
24:32
it's still sad to see it yeah it is sometimes I feel a little cold because
24:37
it does happen often and so sometimes I feel a little
24:43
um like if a normal person was standing with me while I was making decisions or whatever that they would think that I
24:49
had no heart sometimes no I think that even after being here for only a year
24:55
and seeing how much things have kind of changed in my mind I understand it cuz it's like you can't when you have I mean
25:01
I think we we're up to like 150 something animals or something like that when you have 150 animals and a lot of
25:06
them are reproducing or a lot of them are like things happen I mean like
25:14
ginger that could have easily if it hadn't gone noticed she could have easily died from her injury but luckily
25:19
we got it quick because her leg was already swelling up so fast like and we
25:25
got it within 12 hours of it happening you know but how we not noticed it had she just been out in the pasture like
25:30
the cows are or whatever um even though we check on them often we feed them every day it could have had a very
25:37
different outcome and so yeah it's just I think the good outweighs the the bad things though yeah
25:45
very much I think that's why we keep doing it yeah I would I would hope so yeah all right so I've heard Whispers
25:54
that this rapid fire is going to be different it is um so we're just going to or I'm Nate if
26:02
you have any food items to throw in there you can but I'm just going to name off a list of like food items and you're
26:10
going to either say yes or no you would or wouldn't eat it for those that don't
26:16
know I think I actually might be the pickiest person that anyone I know knows
26:21
you're pickier than my mom and I always grew up and she was like the pickiest eater and you're you're worse yeah I
26:29
don't I hate it it's honestly the biggest burden in my life I hate I hate it but we were on a vacation last week
26:37
and my best friend's husband is the type of guy that's like try it try it try it and I'm like I swear Evan I will gag
26:46
it's not like I I could remember going to um friends houses and their parents cooking and me try not to be rude and
26:54
eat what they cooked but if it was something that was like the texture like was so off or the smell or something
27:01
about it would be off and I would literally like be like I'm oh I'm not
27:06
hungry cuz I you know whatever because I didn't want to be embarrassed at like literally throwing up this person's
27:12
homemade food so anyway okay that was the backstory corn dog yes Apple
27:22
Juice I used to I probably not now I don't know why sour cream no se food
27:29
some what shrimp um
27:37
noodles only spaghetti or like mac and cheese
27:42
yes biscuit so like British biscuit or
27:47
American biscuit like like a biscuit from CRA the picture looks like an looks like a British biscuit a cookie like a
27:54
cookie yeah I mean it's like shortbread that that's the thing it's not
27:59
there's stipulations coffee no
28:06
sausage like a regular sausage patty yes but not like a big no like a link
28:14
no a link no that's on Nate's face
28:21
croissant some of these are like it depends on where it's from yes or
28:26
no yes smoothie no sushi no absolutely
28:32
not tacos no eggs
28:39
no lasagna no no no to Tacos I don't
28:44
like taco meat it has like a weird Mee she likes Burgers but won't eat ground beef like in tacos or like I
28:54
don't it's a texture thing quesadilla yes muffin no cake not chocolate cake no pie
