>> RB: Foreign
Speaker:M.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: You guys out there tuning in today to
Speaker:Chasing Birdies. We're glad you're here. Whether you're driving
Speaker:in a car, sitting on a couch, or in an airplane,
Speaker:we know that today we are going to have something
Speaker:important to talk about here on this
Speaker:episode of Chasing Birdie. So, my man J.P. what's going
Speaker:on?
Speaker:>> RB: Hold on, let me adjust this Zen.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Oh, um, you're on a Zen train. You're in Zimbabwe.
Speaker:>> RB: Yeah, uh, I'm in, I guess. I
Speaker:don't know. Yeah,
Speaker:I had a really stressful day. I was so aggravated the one
Speaker:day I pulled off on the turnpike heading back
Speaker:from York, uh,
Speaker:Pennsylvania, back to Pittsburgh.
Speaker:All this tariff talk. I wanted a
Speaker:cigar. I don't smoke in my car. So
Speaker:I stopped and I said, um, can I get Zins?
Speaker:And the person looked at me like, well, what
Speaker:flavor? And I said, well, what flavors are available?
Speaker:And she didn't get past citrus. And I said,
Speaker:give me the citrus threes.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Oh, my God.
Speaker:>> RB: And it's been nice, dude. It's nice. Little, like, I, uh,
Speaker:haven't smoked as many cigars, so. I don't know. I don't know. I
Speaker:don't know.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: You and JR Hess love the citrus. It probably
Speaker:really, actually is a benefit
Speaker:to you, though, for someone that is partly
Speaker:addicted to the full rush of
Speaker:nicotine with something in their mouth as a
Speaker:cigar. Um, this is probably a
Speaker:good thing for you, dude.
Speaker:>> RB: So we're here, and I feel kind of cool, like, you know, you
Speaker:put the little puck in the back pocket, let people know
Speaker:it's there. Um, I got yelled at on the
Speaker:plane. You're not allowed to do it on the airplane or it's not allowed to be
Speaker:out. Um.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Which I don't get why they.
Speaker:>> RB: Said it's illegal, but the guy's
Speaker:like, listen, I don't care. He's like, I'm just telling you because my.
Speaker:My counterparts do care.
Speaker:So either way,
Speaker:um, today's episode is brought to you by Red Family. Make sure
Speaker:you go check them out@redvanly.com. um,
Speaker:the Chasing Birdies 2 man is brought to you by
Speaker:Red Valley. We have 52 guys signed up. I think
Speaker:we're just gonna cut it off there. Another people. If somebody wants to join, they
Speaker:can, but we gotta find another person.
Speaker:And the way people are paying, we might
Speaker:not have an event, so. But, yeah, it's exciting
Speaker:stuff.
Speaker:So, uh, m. We had a
Speaker:good little hiatus there. A little break, I
Speaker:shall say. But we did some videos, the Masters
Speaker:videos. And let's talk about that.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Man, let's talk about what
Speaker:happened catching up here
Speaker:on this episode. It's been a while since we had an episode with,
Speaker:with a guest on the show, which we'll get into that. But,
Speaker:man, this goes back before the Masters, which has now been
Speaker:a couple of weeks. That, um, was one of the
Speaker:most, as we all know, thrilling
Speaker:Masters in a long time.
Speaker:>> RB: Yes.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I mean, I think 20. What was it? 20?
Speaker:Uh, 18 was the last time there was a playoff to decide
Speaker:to winner, which, in fact, I happen to be at.
Speaker:But, uh, no. Dude, I was so Happy to
Speaker:see McElroy M. Get it done. I mean, how could you not?
Speaker:>> RB: There's a couple things that
Speaker:your average golfer won't recognize
Speaker:that went down in those last few holes.
Speaker:Um, you know, Bob
Speaker:Rotella, who works with
Speaker:McElroy, is big on sticking to
Speaker:your game plan. What got you in the situ. You know, what
Speaker:got you in a place to be in the lead by three, four,
Speaker:um, whatever it may be. Um, so when he
Speaker:got the 13, he took three wood out. Seemed like a great
Speaker:play, right? Um, but he had driver every
Speaker:time on that hole. Thursday,
Speaker:Friday, Saturday, he had three wood. Sunday goes to lay
Speaker:up flares this
Speaker:wedge that he could have hit 45ft past the. The
Speaker:pin. Now, if
Speaker:he hits driver, he's going for it. And two,
Speaker:obviously, even if he's not, he's laying
Speaker:up towards the. The short of the creek.
Speaker:Really short of the creek. Or if he goes for and two and hits
Speaker:in the creek, he's dropping right at the creek.
Speaker:So that's one thing.
Speaker:Second thing. I don't know if a lot of people noticed, but
Speaker:his. Him walking from 18t in
Speaker:regulation to his second shot, he was hyperventilating. He
Speaker:literally was hyperventilating.
Speaker:And if you pay enough attention to routines on
Speaker:the PGA Tour, they are, you know, let's
Speaker:just say, uh, like Padre Harrington's routines. Like 43 seconds on
Speaker:the dot. Every time it's the same.
Speaker:His routine was so quick, he just wanted
Speaker:to get it out of the way that second shot, and he pushed it
Speaker:right into that bunker. He goes to hit his
Speaker:third bunker, that third shot out of the bunker, which was a
Speaker:fabulous shot. I'm not saying that, but I'm saying it was all up to
Speaker:it. The camera panned away from
Speaker:him to show the crowd it almost didn't catch him.
Speaker:Bunker shot because he was hitting it so quickly.
Speaker:It's almost like he just wanted to get it out of the way.
Speaker:And, um, when he. He pulled that putt
Speaker:it was a right edge putt. And I'm thinking, oh, my God.
Speaker:But, man, did he step up with some
Speaker:kahunas in that second shot. Stuffed
Speaker:it, made the putt. And you talk
Speaker:about. We've witnessed a lot
Speaker:of great moments in sports history
Speaker:in our life that might have been the most
Speaker:relieved
Speaker:athlete you've ever seen in your whole entire life.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Hands, um, down.
Speaker:>> RB: So it was really cool to see. I mean, it was awesome to see him
Speaker:just soak it in like, it was like a kid dude.
Speaker:And I firmly believe, and I said this on the episode that you're going to be
Speaker:hearing today. I firmly believe he's going to have three
Speaker:or four majors in the next three
Speaker:to four years. Um, yeah, you
Speaker:know, the PGA is at Quill Hollow. Love
Speaker:that course for him. He's one there and he loves it.
Speaker:Yeah, Oakmont, I think, is a great
Speaker:course for him if he can get that putter hot.
Speaker:Uh, I'm not worried about his. But one at a time
Speaker:drivers or anything. And then the British Open,
Speaker:I think. Is it in
Speaker:Ireland?
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I have no idea.
Speaker:>> RB: I think it's in Ireland. Um, I think it's. What if it is
Speaker:Port Rush? I think.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I don't think it's a Porsche Port Rush, but.
Speaker:>> RB: Well, uh, wherever.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Port rush, like 23 or
Speaker:4. Either
Speaker:way, if it's in Northern Ireland or Ireland, then you might be
Speaker:right. I. I don't think it's at Port Rush. Fact
Speaker:checkers. Hey, are you guys over there? Can you fact check this for us,
Speaker:please, so we can. Thank you. Thank you. But yeah, dude,
Speaker:my.
Speaker:>> RB: My Palm Dunloose got course.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Okay. Never heard of it. Wait, I don't know.
Speaker:>> RB: No, it is. It is. Sorry. It's the Royal Port
Speaker:Rush in Northern Ireland. So I was right
Speaker:and all you fact checkers are wasting your
Speaker:time.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Well, they just confirmed. The lady over there in the corner just told
Speaker:me.
Speaker:>> RB: So, um, Royal Port Rush 2025. So, I
Speaker:mean, he could win one or two in the next three this year. I
Speaker:firmly believe.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I was absolutely ecstatic for that win.
Speaker:And my palms are so sweaty watching that final
Speaker:round, especially the final hole when he
Speaker:was, ah, attempting to hit that bunker shot. Dude, my. My
Speaker:palms were just sweating. Naturally, I had some coin riding on the
Speaker:guy, um, which we won't get into that.
Speaker:But the point being is I was. I was a little
Speaker:bit on edge. A little?
Speaker:>> RB: Well, I mean, it was. We won't get into the exact numbers, but it was
Speaker:like you made the cut, but finished last in the cut line,
Speaker:so congratulations. To you, it's like you played
Speaker:in the Masters. Um, yeah, but it was,
Speaker:it was fun to text with you and see what you're gonna do.
Speaker:Um, but congratulations, bud. I mean, thanks for.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I appreciate it. I appreciate it. Yeah, the, the
Speaker:move, taking Justin Rose after he
Speaker:birdie 12 and then
Speaker:he somehow ends up in the lead after 17
Speaker:or 16, whatever. And that thing was just like.
Speaker:I'm. Like, I'm out, cash out, jumping off.
Speaker:So it was a great. A lot of luck. A lot of luck. But then the
Speaker:following week, this past weekend in Hilton Head at the
Speaker:rbc, we go into another playoff
Speaker:scenario. This time, fan favorite J.T. gets it
Speaker:done on the 18th hole, makes birdie
Speaker:at Harbortown against Andrew Novak. Now, I
Speaker:don't know if anybody knows about this Andrew Novak cat, but apparently he played
Speaker:golf at, uh, Wofford, which I know Wofford simply
Speaker:because of their bulldogish type
Speaker:logo. Because
Speaker:the Terriers. Yeah, in basketball, I
Speaker:love taking WOFFORD, you know, plus 16 and a half.
Speaker:So my man's really starting to play good. He's got a couple top
Speaker:10 finishes right now. But that was a thrilling.
Speaker:That was a thrilling golf tournament, you know,
Speaker:and I didn't realize. Did you know that
Speaker:that tournament has been playing every
Speaker:year at harbor town since
Speaker:1969? That's
Speaker:56 years.
Speaker:>> RB: Yeah.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: That is insane.
Speaker:>> RB: And I think a lot of the PGA Tour players like it because small
Speaker:greens, they're really small greens at Harbor.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Town.
Speaker:>> RB: Past, um, guest Colton Ost. I think he shot his career low
Speaker:on Harbor Town. Um, and he
Speaker:hits, you know, five hybrid
Speaker:195 yards. So, um.
Speaker:But yeah, it was, it was a great finish. I actually
Speaker:watched the playoff. JT
Speaker:smoked one down there. There guy Novak hit it
Speaker:15 yards by him, but he pulled his second shot.
Speaker:JT hit to about 20ft and just jarred it. It would
Speaker:mean with center cut the whole way. And again, another one
Speaker:hasn't won in three years.
Speaker:You know, that's the first time
Speaker:that in any of his wins that he had to make a putt on
Speaker:18 to win.
Speaker:So everything else he said just happens.
Speaker:It's already been a win. You know, he had two, three shot lead,
Speaker:whatever. That was the first time he's ever had to win in a
Speaker:playoff. And I make a
Speaker:bomb.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah, that was hella
Speaker:good. Look at me.
Speaker:>> RB: He's been in mix like I'm studying. You see this,
Speaker:bud?
Speaker:>> Jonathan: You're like Jim Nance. I mean, my God, this is
Speaker:incredible.
Speaker:>> RB: So, uh, what's been going on with you, bud?
Speaker:>> Jonathan: No, man, just living a dream, you know, playing a
Speaker:little G. I want to say a couple shout outs to some hole in one
Speaker:guys. Carson Verzella recorded his first hole
Speaker:in one ever in Scottsdale, Arizona last
Speaker:week. So shout out cv. And then our
Speaker:boy IPA on Easter day knocks it
Speaker:in at the wood Sugar wood, apparently
Speaker:for his hole in one on Easter day.
Speaker:So all glory to you, ip. Uh, congrats,
Speaker:boys, on the hole in ones. I got a chance to play golf
Speaker:with Steve Peering, Eric Childers and
Speaker:Adot at Pete died last week in Bridgeport.
Speaker:And my God, was that course incredible. I mean,
Speaker:Peering, uh, you know, he wasn't riding with
Speaker:me, so his game was a little better than what it's
Speaker:been in the past. So, um, I don't know, man. It
Speaker:was, it was just a lot of fun seeing those boys. They,
Speaker:uh, missed you. They want. They wanted me to tell you hello. So that's what
Speaker:I'm doing.
Speaker:>> RB: That's nice. And Steve Piering asked me to
Speaker:like. Where are you going? I'm going to
Speaker:Denver. You want me to set up golf? I appreciate it,
Speaker:bud, but you were the last person that I would want
Speaker:setting golf up for me. I'll fly across the
Speaker:world with my golf clubs thinking I'm playing somewhere,
Speaker:and I show up to this public golf course and I don't even
Speaker:have a tee time. So I just drag my clubs all the way out here and don't have a
Speaker:tee time. So, no, I appreciate the thought, but I'm
Speaker:handle my own golf, um, when I, when I
Speaker:need that.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Well, there we go. So
Speaker:today's guest, Jake Stoutland, joining us here on
Speaker:I love you, but he does.
Speaker:He does. We all do. Stout,
Speaker:um, land on Instagram. This guy has the
Speaker:most entertaining factual videos
Speaker:of golf knowledge. Whatever you want. He puts
Speaker:it out there. Has a great following. Really, uh,
Speaker:starting to make a little name for himself in this, in this whole world of
Speaker:social media. And thanks to Pepe for knocking on his
Speaker:door multiple times. Multiple times. Kind of
Speaker:reminded. Probably takes you back to high
Speaker:school a little bit. Just banging down the doors. We, uh, we
Speaker:got him on. And it's a fabulous episode.
Speaker:>> RB: It's. It's an awesome episode. And like you said, I. I've been
Speaker:knocking his door down. Gets a lot of messages so
Speaker:that I don't feel as bad. Um, but persistence
Speaker:overcomes resistance. My mom always told me that. So here we
Speaker:are. But really looking forward
Speaker:to this episode for everyone. And I, uh,
Speaker:think we should just roll on over to Jake.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yep, let's do it here on Chasing
Speaker:Birdies, man.
Speaker:It's been a while since we've had a fresh new episode of
Speaker:Chasing Birdies, especially with a guest. I know
Speaker:Pep and I have been yucking it up a bunch, both of us, but we're kind of
Speaker:tired of that. Not really. But
Speaker:today we are joined by a fabulous guest. You may know
Speaker:him from Instagram, YouTube,
Speaker:all his facts that he has that will blow your mind.
Speaker:I don't even know how you know these facts, but Jake Statland is joining
Speaker:us here on Chasing Birdies today,
Speaker:and my man, thanks for coming on the show.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah. Appreciate you guys having me excited to be here.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah, I love it, dude. You know, Peps,
Speaker:Pep's been telling me about you now for two
Speaker:months at least, and he's like, man, this, this guy,
Speaker:these stories, this whole vibe, man. So, yeah, we're
Speaker:absolutely stoked.
Speaker:>> RB: I'll tell you what.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Oh, I hope I can live up to the hype.
Speaker:>> RB: Yeah. I'll tell you what, kids. Don't give up. Don't ever give
Speaker:up. I sent enough messages to this guy to.
Speaker:To get him on. He finally responded, so here we are.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, sorry, I. I do
Speaker:get a lot, and it's really hard to keep
Speaker:track. So, yeah, just be persistent. That's great
Speaker:advice.
Speaker:>> RB: See, that's the moral of the story, right? There's a.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Keep knocking doors down. Yeah, keep knocking doors.
Speaker:>> RB: I do have to say, you know, I'm gonna get this started
Speaker:because you were talking about, uh,
Speaker:you had a video that, um, you were
Speaker:talking about the craziest, wildest
Speaker:names in. In golf, right? And I
Speaker:think you came up on number seven or eight, and
Speaker:it's Yakagi Country Club, which is in my
Speaker:backyard, in which I grew up there. I still play
Speaker:there. How did you even
Speaker:get a hold of that name? I mean, because it's not like it's
Speaker:a well known name, but did
Speaker:somebody send you that?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah. So a lot of this stuff now, when
Speaker:I first started the account, it was my knowledge, but my
Speaker:knowledge only got so far. Turns out my base
Speaker:knowledge of golf was good enough to
Speaker:build a really good following
Speaker:of golf nuts. People who just love
Speaker:golf and love golf for
Speaker:the most organic reasons. And that's a
Speaker:really good cohort of people. As time
Speaker:went on, follower count got
Speaker:bigger and got more people kind of on the wagon.
Speaker:And I've been using Instagram
Speaker:stories as a, uh, almost an
Speaker:idea crowdsourcing tool. And
Speaker:there's so many good ideas. There's so many more knowledgeable people
Speaker:about Golf than I am. I'm, like, pretty knowledgeable,
Speaker:but there are so many people that are more knowledgeable than I am, and I'm
Speaker:aware of that. And so, yeah, somebody sent me that
Speaker:one, and I said, okay, you gotta send me a voice
Speaker:message, like, pronounce, uh, how to
Speaker:pronounce this club's name, because I don't want to butcher
Speaker:it. And he. I think I can't remember who did it, but
Speaker:they sent me. They sent me a couple, and I sent them back. I
Speaker:said, yaka ganey Yakageni. And
Speaker:he's like, bingo. I'm like, okay. Boom.
Speaker:>> RB: I would love to know if I know this person, because, again, uh,
Speaker:this golf course is in the middle. We're in the
Speaker:middle of western Pennsylvania. It is a hidden
Speaker:little gem, and it's like
Speaker:6,500 from all the way backs, but the greens are really
Speaker:fast, rough gets tall. But, um, man, when
Speaker:I saw that, I was sending it to all the boys, uh, that are members
Speaker:over there with me, and we were just
Speaker:laughing so hard because it's like, how. How did you get this
Speaker:name? So it's interesting to hear that.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I mean, it is a cool track, you know, there's no doubt about it.
Speaker:He's kind of got that old country club feel. You know what I mean?
Speaker:Um, they got it.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: That's what I've. The coolest part
Speaker:about what I've. What I'm
Speaker:starting to build is the relationships and the people
Speaker:I get to meet, and then the insight that I
Speaker:learn that that is a golf club that I never would
Speaker:have found, I never would have knew about.
Speaker:But I have people
Speaker:that send me stuff that, I mean,
Speaker:it's sometimes easy to, like,
Speaker:figure out who is. Knows what they're talking about,
Speaker:who's not, just by how you write or. There's a lot of, like,
Speaker:indicators now that I've gotten so many messages.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: And it's pretty clear. Sometimes somebody will send me something. It's like, oh, this
Speaker:person knows. And I'm gonna, like, Google this. And. Oh,
Speaker:uh, they're right. So,
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: You know, when. Whenever you're doing something like this with respect
Speaker:to your. Your page and whatnot. I mean, it is
Speaker:in essentially a business, you. You know, so you start
Speaker:from that ground level. You try to put out what you know, like you
Speaker:said, all the knowledge, you know, but then you kind of hit a ceiling in that regard.
Speaker:But how did you keep it going? Because there's so
Speaker:many things on your page that just
Speaker:not only would. Would. Would like, like
Speaker:Me personally, I'd ever think about. But the fact
Speaker:that you know it to a, uh, T. Like, for example, the
Speaker:title is Golf Ball. The guy taking X rays of
Speaker:the ball. Like, that is such a. A fact
Speaker:of golf that I guarantee you most people
Speaker:don't know.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, I think that's true. And
Speaker:sometimes I have to remind myself that
Speaker:what people I hang around with at the golf club
Speaker:know, most of the world probably doesn't know.
Speaker:So I do have an advantage where I've spent
Speaker:a lot of time at the golf course in my life,
Speaker:and since about the
Speaker:past 10 years, I've taken an interest in. I,
Speaker:uh, don't know, this might be not the nicest or elegant way
Speaker:to say, but the finer things in golf architecture and
Speaker:just the nuances that go into making an
Speaker:experience special,
Speaker:and I think that
Speaker:quality is just. It's being
Speaker:observant, being very observant. And I've
Speaker:been able to travel
Speaker:to a lot of really special places. And when I go there,
Speaker:I'm not. It's, uh, not just like
Speaker:going in one ear, out the other. I'm eyes wide open. I'm taking
Speaker:notes. Um, I'm, um, watching everything.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: And so to answer your
Speaker:question, like, how do I find these stories and how
Speaker:some. Most of them are kind of given to
Speaker:me, but, like, somebody will send me an idea
Speaker:or, you know, I just. I'll go on Google and I'll just
Speaker:start searching stuff. I mean, that. That story actually
Speaker:was. It's on Titleist's homepage. It says
Speaker:the whole story right on the homepage of about. On the
Speaker:Titleist. I mean, it's right there. Now,
Speaker:the. The nuance there is
Speaker:storytelling. Yeah, that's. That's
Speaker:what makes this. That's what makes that video do
Speaker:good. And I. Once you get the story,
Speaker:it's like, okay, the easy. That's like the easy part. Now you have to tell the
Speaker:story. That's the hard part. And that's where
Speaker:I think, um, I've gotten pretty good at doing.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Oh, yeah. Uh, no doubt about it.
Speaker:Like, you. You. Because, you know, nowadays with
Speaker:videos, what we've learned here with our podcast is that,
Speaker:like, people will look at a video or a reel. They may
Speaker:only watch it for eight to 10 seconds, you know,
Speaker:but how do you captivate someone into
Speaker:to watching the whole thing? And I think you exhibit
Speaker:that so well because your storytelling, you know,
Speaker:your. The way you use your words, the excitement
Speaker:in your voice, but it's like, I just want to sit there. I'll sit there. And watch your
Speaker:videos. I'm like, uh, right, this one, check this one out.
Speaker:Ben. Ben Curtis, the guy ranked
Speaker:369 and, oh, three wins the British Open. I mean,
Speaker:shit like that. That it's like, you know,
Speaker:I don't know. It's cool stuff, man. For golf junkies, it's great.
Speaker:>> RB: Yeah, it is.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: That's. That's the learning here. It's.
Speaker:You need to focus on a really small
Speaker:group of people or person. And almost I'm
Speaker:talking to myself, like, what would Jake want to
Speaker:know five years ago that he didn't?
Speaker:And I'm my own audience. And some
Speaker:of the stuff I make, like the, the Ben Curtis
Speaker:one, I don't think that got a lot of views. I was proud of that video. And I
Speaker:felt like when I learned that, I was like, oh, my gosh, I did
Speaker:not know the story. And this was like, really cool.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: But to. To hit on something you said at
Speaker:the beginning was like, watch time. And how do you
Speaker:get people to hang around in short form there?
Speaker:I've learned a lot. I got lucky early on because
Speaker:I, I hit a couple home runs with my first, like,
Speaker:three videos and I was like, oh, this is
Speaker:easy. And it's not.
Speaker:But it's not easy.
Speaker:I got lucky, but I kept showing up because I went
Speaker:through it. Well, uh, at least to me. It felt like I
Speaker:started off really hot and then it just was like
Speaker:grind, you know, you weren't getting. I, um, mean, I wasn't
Speaker:getting six figure views on any videos. And I was like, okay, just
Speaker:put, put your head down. You got to get through this. But what I learned is there's
Speaker:like, uh, three things you need to do in
Speaker:the first three seconds that are absolute
Speaker:must for short form video. I can go down that, but this
Speaker:isn't really short form video podcast, so I'll leave that. But they're
Speaker:like, there are parts.
Speaker:>> RB: I know. We need it. Tell us.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: You need a visual cue,
Speaker:like on the screen. You need a visual text that
Speaker:tells people, like in a minute or two, for a second
Speaker:or two, you need something that comes across the screen. If you watch any of my
Speaker:videos, you'll see there's a text now coming across the screen
Speaker:and it's moving. It's not just there already.
Speaker:You want it to come in and people's eyes see
Speaker:that. So that's like their first dopamine. Uh, hit. The
Speaker:second one is. You'll see there's pictures above me talking
Speaker:that are going fast. They need to match
Speaker:very well to the text coming across
Speaker:the screen, they need to match what that's saying
Speaker:very well. And that visual cue on the screen needs to
Speaker:be enticing. And then the third thing
Speaker:is actually what you're saying, that's also very important.
Speaker:But I think it's probably the third most important part.
Speaker:But they're all important, and if you don't nail all three of those,
Speaker:good luck.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah, you need it all. That's the ingredient.
Speaker:>> RB: Well, Bash, it looks like your job just got a little harder.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: You know, it's funny talking about this golf stuff and
Speaker:some things that people don't realize or don't know and all this
Speaker:cool stuff. And I think what I'm about to say, I
Speaker:think a lot of people know this, but to the
Speaker:extent of how legitimate it is, is really
Speaker:surprising to me. And. And I just golfed last month
Speaker:with a, uh, member from Butler, and I was talking to him about
Speaker:the no. The no menu that they have. Like, literally,
Speaker:it's like, hey, if you go to Butler national, they don't have a menu.
Speaker:So I brought that up to him. I'm like, hey, man, I'm like, you know, the no
Speaker:menu thing, I've been there. Pep and I've been there, you know, and
Speaker:naturally, we know it's true, but to what extent can you really push.
Speaker:Push it? And he's all, dude,
Speaker:it's 100% legitimate. Like, they literally
Speaker:say, whatever the hell you want. We will get you
Speaker:anything. And they try to screw them. They try to tell them, like, stuff
Speaker:like sushi, for example, and then they're asking them if they want tuna
Speaker:or salmon, like, they make anything happen. And to
Speaker:me, that is unbelievable
Speaker:as a club to just roll out and say, no menu. Whatever you
Speaker:guys want, we got you. And it's legitimately true.
Speaker:>> RB: The first time I was at Butler national, that was
Speaker:my experience. They came over and said, what would you like to order? And I said,
Speaker:well, uh, I haven't received the menu yet. There's no
Speaker:menu. What would you like? And I said, well, I said,
Speaker:what's really good right now? And the lady said, our
Speaker:swordfish is out of this world. And I
Speaker:said, I'll take it, because
Speaker:it's just easier, right next thing.
Speaker:Well, which sides do you want? I need
Speaker:options. Just whatever. Throw something on there.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: That's awesome. These are the experiences that
Speaker:you remember. These are the experiences you remember. And
Speaker:I've realized also that we
Speaker:almost don't play golf
Speaker:for this. I mean, a lot of people do play for the
Speaker:score, and I do But I think, um, what I more go there
Speaker:for is the experience. And it's not just
Speaker:the golf course. It's everything. From the second you
Speaker:pull in to the entrance to the.
Speaker:To everything in between. I'm talking everything.
Speaker:And these elite golf clubs, everything
Speaker:are, uh, have. Have
Speaker:identified every single touch point. And,
Speaker:and like, you're talking about Butler National. That's unique. That's something you
Speaker:remember forever. Like, where else can that happen
Speaker:in the world?
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah, right. No, it is. It's a cool fact.
Speaker:And, you know, and that's why I asked the question to him,
Speaker:because I was like, really? How far can you push it? And he's like, there's
Speaker:no limit. I mean, literally, whatever you want,
Speaker:which.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Is overwhelming for me too. That would be over. I wouldn't know what
Speaker:to. For each.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah, I know.
Speaker:>> RB: That's exactly what I did. I'm like,
Speaker:I, uh, don't know. Cheeseburger. They'd be like, yeah.
Speaker:Ah, we. Unfortunately, we don't have that one.
Speaker:Um, but you talk about golf
Speaker:experiences, and I think even Ryan,
Speaker:um, and myself, when we walk away
Speaker:from. From playing somewhere that we haven't
Speaker:played, we, uh, talk about the vibe a lot.
Speaker:And you talk about how the staff was,
Speaker:or the food was, or this, that, and the other
Speaker:as, uh, before it was just go play golf. You're in
Speaker:and out. You drink beers and have fun.
Speaker:Um, and we're. We're going down to Sage
Speaker:Valley here in about a week and a half,
Speaker:which the guys that I'm going with have
Speaker:not been there yet, and I was there in the fall.
Speaker:And you talk about a golf experience.
Speaker:That one from top to bottom is like everything
Speaker:there. You remember
Speaker:everything. The caddies, the, the snack shops, the.
Speaker:The pro shop, the bars, the restaurant. Like you remember it
Speaker:all. And, and to me, It's.
Speaker:It's like a 10, uh, out of 10 golf experience.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I'm excited to join you.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I haven't been there yet, but I've heard it's exquisite.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: But I mean, again, the story of that too, you know, I guess the guy
Speaker:was developing Walmarts or owned Walmarts or lands or
Speaker:something to that effect.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, um, Walmart. And I don't know the
Speaker:full story, but I think it had something to do with not being able
Speaker:to, uh, enter, become a member at the
Speaker:club down the road. So.
Speaker:>> RB: Yeah, well, I actually played with the
Speaker:owner's accountant in October, and I have
Speaker:the story, so I'll share it with you.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Okay.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Secret. Secret sauce.
Speaker:So, Jake, you, um, naturally are a lover
Speaker:of Golf. You've been playing golf for a while, I take it. Uh, where are you
Speaker:based out of?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Philadelphia.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Oh, you're Philly. Loaded.
Speaker:>> RB: Oh, what a pocket of golf, dude.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Loaded. I mean, yeah. So you're not too
Speaker:far from us. Um, where do you peg it up? Out that
Speaker:way.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I'm in a little club called the Spring Haven
Speaker:club, founded in 1896.
Speaker:Our kind of little claim to fame is it's the first
Speaker:course designed by a woman, Ida Dixon,
Speaker:and notable name here in the Philadelphia region.
Speaker:Well, there's been a lot of other architects that have kind of had their hands on
Speaker:the course. William Flynn being probably the most notable.
Speaker:But, um, great little club. It's not
Speaker:long, short par 70, but,
Speaker:um, you know, small greens, and they. When they want them
Speaker:to get fast, they're lightning. And,
Speaker:um, it's a. It's a. It can be a real
Speaker:test. But I'm happy over there.
Speaker:>> RB: Well, I mean, the. The Philadelphia golf.
Speaker:I. I mean, I haven't played too much there, but the
Speaker:Philly Cricket Club. Love that place.
Speaker:Um, Bash. We played at Stonewall as
Speaker:well, which, again, one of
Speaker:the. One of my favorite logos is Stonewall with
Speaker:the. The cow head holding the golf club. Um,
Speaker:but there's so many good golf courses in Philly. It's. It's kind of
Speaker:like that New York vibe, too, right? Like, there's pockets
Speaker:just north of the city of New York, I believe. And. And it's
Speaker:just, you know, you got your wing foots and
Speaker:Westchesters and all that. So, um,
Speaker:that northeast, we talk about it all the time.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: The golden age.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I'm actually.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I was actually thinking about doing a video explaining, like,
Speaker:why, how did this happen? And the
Speaker:short answer is that's the industry
Speaker:in 1900. That's where the wealth was.
Speaker:New York, Boston, Philadelphia.
Speaker:And that's where all the money was coming through. That's where all the.
Speaker:There was, um, a lot of wealthy people. There was demand for
Speaker:golf, and therefore the best architects
Speaker:were there most mostly. And you got the
Speaker:best land and the best golf courses. Now, I
Speaker:think the best golf courses might m. Be biased.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Best region. No, no, no, I don't disagree with you at all. I
Speaker:think that that northeast region
Speaker:is.
Speaker:>> RB: Well, even western Pennsylvania. I mean, you look at western
Speaker:pa, where we are. I mean, Ryan's in
Speaker:Morgantown, um, which he's at
Speaker:Pikewood National. Pete, uh, Dye and
Speaker:Greenbrier. So he's at a few.
Speaker:Um, but then on western
Speaker:Pennsylvania side, you know, we. We've got the Laurel Valleys, the
Speaker:Oakmonts the Fox Chapels, the Alleghenies. I
Speaker:mean, it's just, you just keep going and it's like,
Speaker:you know, again, a lot of people don't realize that.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I agree. A lot of people don't realize that whenever
Speaker:they're, oh, ah, gainy drop, drop. Another
Speaker:yakini. Um, Schuylkill too.
Speaker:Schuylkill. Over here we got Schuylkill Country Club. That's another sneaky one.
Speaker:But, um, I do a little video
Speaker:where you, ah, kind of, kind of bait people or usually
Speaker:like the best city in the world for golf is
Speaker:one. You'd never guess. It's Philadelphia. And
Speaker:I, I don't know. I really think from a. If you draw a
Speaker:50 mile circle around the center of Philadelphia,
Speaker:you're going to be hard pressed to beat it. Because if you did a 50
Speaker:mile circle around New York City, you're not going to get
Speaker:Long Island. Um,
Speaker:so, like all those courses are out,
Speaker:so I don't know. It's hard.
Speaker:>> RB: Within 50 miles of Philly, isn't. What. How
Speaker:far is Pine Valley is that?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Ah, 30 miles. Oh, no,
Speaker:10, 15.
Speaker:>> RB: It's because you cross that bridge and.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: It'S, it's there, it's there. It's people
Speaker:outside the region say, oh, Pine
Speaker:Valley is not a part of the Philadelphia region. It absolutely
Speaker:is. South Jersey is part of Philadelphia. In,
Speaker:uh, my opinion. I mean, South Jersey, it's New Jersey. So
Speaker:don't New Jersey people. It's New Jersey. I'm not saying
Speaker:it's not new people.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: What do you insinuate?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: They're all coming into Philadelphia and that's
Speaker:what it is. So.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah, no, totally. I
Speaker:know. There's no doubt about it. You'd
Speaker:be hard pressed to, to lose an argument over that region
Speaker:of being the best.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: And then even like just outside, uh, you've
Speaker:got Lehigh Country Club up in, um, that
Speaker:area and Saucon Valley. Those are two
Speaker:elite golf clubs. Uh, they're country
Speaker:clubs, but elite.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I hear rolling green's pretty good too.
Speaker:>> RB: Where. Bash, where's Taylor at? Lancaster, uh, Country
Speaker:Club.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Lancaster. Lancaster. Ah, mispronunciation
Speaker:there.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Um, what is it called? Lancaster.
Speaker:>> RB: Lancaster.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Link, you can't. You guys will know. Like, I
Speaker:get smoked on, uh, these.
Speaker:If I mispronounce anything. It's just you're
Speaker:getting the, you're getting people coming in with, like, their
Speaker:pitchforks. Like, yeah, you mispronounced my
Speaker:club. And I'm like, I'm not trying
Speaker:to insult anybody. Like, come on, guys, calm
Speaker:down.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: So what is the proper Pronunciation.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Lancaster.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Lancaster.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Wow.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: It's like.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Lancaster.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Lancaster.
Speaker:Yeah, yeah, I know. Uh,
Speaker:but that. That is an elite golf course. Lancaster
Speaker:Country Club. That is one of my favorite.
Speaker:And I. That's
Speaker:not gonna say it. That's really high on my list.
Speaker:Philly area. Really, really high. I love
Speaker:it.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: So tell us and the listeners out there, because I know we got
Speaker:hundreds of them right now tuning in when this episode
Speaker:drops. You know, give us a story of
Speaker:yours that you might feel
Speaker:is one of the most interesting finds or
Speaker:learns that you've had that, you know, at the top of
Speaker:your head that would make someone go, damn, I didn't know that. That's pretty
Speaker:rad.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Ooh. Um, spot. All right,
Speaker:so
Speaker:we'll go, um. We'll go Sand Valley.
Speaker:No, Sandhills.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Sandhills.
Speaker:>> RB: Sandhills.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: That's a bad. Sand Hills. I get those confused for some
Speaker:reason. Sand Valley's in, um, Wisconsin. Sand Hills is
Speaker:in Nebraska. In the middle of nowhere. So there
Speaker:was this guy named Dick
Speaker:Youngscap, and
Speaker:he got an idea. He said, I want to build one of the best golf
Speaker:courses in the world. And
Speaker:he was searching for the perfect piece of land. He wasn't finding
Speaker:it, but he finally found a piece of land that was
Speaker:humongous, but he felt was like the perfect piece of land for
Speaker:a golf club. It was four hours
Speaker:away from Omaha, four
Speaker:hours away from five hours away from Denver,
Speaker:and the closest airport was one of those two. So
Speaker:it's just. Or there's a private one that's
Speaker:like an hour or so. It's in
Speaker:the middle of nowhere. So that's a big problem.
Speaker:And at this point in time, when he bought
Speaker:or when he decided to do this, there was
Speaker:not, um. There was
Speaker:not known demand for a destination. Private.
Speaker:Private golf club where members are. It's
Speaker:a national membership, and people just come in for
Speaker:a weekend or a couple days to golf.
Speaker:But he had a real vision, and he
Speaker:said, I'm going to do this. I'm going to go through with this.
Speaker:So he picked the perfect piece of land. And the
Speaker:second beautiful thing that he did is he hired Corin
Speaker:Crenshaw, the architects. And the
Speaker:coolest part about this is
Speaker:they had their sum of money that he said, okay, here's the amount of
Speaker:money for the golf course.
Speaker:85% of the money was used on
Speaker:irrigation. So, uh, in that. I'm
Speaker:saying they didn't move any land. They went out there, they looked
Speaker:around, and they said, this is a hole. This is a hole. This is a hole.
Speaker:They planted grass, they put green sites,
Speaker:they shaped green sites, but they weren't, they didn't move
Speaker:land. The beautiful part about that is they
Speaker:found a golf course in the middle of nowhere,
Speaker:put up a golf club, and now it's the top
Speaker:10 golf course in the world.
Speaker:>> RB: That is story that is 85% of
Speaker:their budget went on water.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah. You're lining the, uh. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker:Putting in the system, the lines.
Speaker:>> RB: That's really cool. Now I've heard of Sandhills, and
Speaker:I do the same thing that you did, so I get them confused
Speaker:just because it's so similar.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I think Danny Woodhead was talking about Sandhills when we had him on
Speaker:a.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: While back because he's an epic place. I haven't been, but
Speaker:I, I mean everybody that goes there is just. It's
Speaker:experience like no other. And they have a pretty awesome
Speaker:halfway house. Uh, burger. Apparently there's a guy that
Speaker:sits there on the grill cooking burgers and the, the
Speaker:cows are just right across the line there and he's like, yeah,
Speaker:these are fresh.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: If you guys, both of you were to build a
Speaker:course or a club, what would be your
Speaker:number one highlighted feature of this
Speaker:club? Like what would it be?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Oh, I see my stance
Speaker:on that. Is
Speaker:there, uh, one thing, one elite thing isn't going to
Speaker:make, make a golf club
Speaker:great. So I don't know if I, I
Speaker:mean, I guess the course, I mean the course needs to be
Speaker:great, but I don't think just with an
Speaker:elite course, I still don't think you
Speaker:can. Well, maybe that's not true,
Speaker:but I guess the course. I guess the question would
Speaker:be you got to pick the right architect. So that's the answer. The
Speaker:architect.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: That's pretty good cigar.
Speaker:>> RB: I would probably say the same thing now that I heard him say that,
Speaker:but I would also probably focus on the vibe. I'm,
Speaker:I'm a vibe guy, so I kind of hang. I would,
Speaker:would focus on the hang and yeah,
Speaker:making um, it fun because
Speaker:I've played a few courses over the last couple years that,
Speaker:you know, are built up to be something
Speaker:special. And you play the course and you're kind of like, meh
Speaker:m. The course is okay, but I
Speaker:walk away and had a 10 out of 10 time and it was a
Speaker:blast. And um,
Speaker:so I, I think the vibe can
Speaker:help make a decent course
Speaker:better, so to speak.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I agree. I, I think but take.
Speaker:Get that vibe. In my opinion,
Speaker:there just needs to be a lot of things that happen. There needs to be
Speaker:leadership that ah, enables the vibe. Yeah,
Speaker:there needs to be the
Speaker:employee. There's the whole. I mean, there's so much that goes into
Speaker:it. There's so much. There's so much nuance there.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I think travel, destination golf is, is the way,
Speaker:like, for some of these clubs that are, you know,
Speaker:not close to us or you, and you want
Speaker:to join on a national membership and be able to go there twice a
Speaker:year for three days, take the boys, whatever. Um,
Speaker:um, I think that has just grown in, in so
Speaker:much popularity over the last five or ten years. And I don't know
Speaker:why. I don't have any facts to back that up. It's just my opinion.
Speaker:But all these club. You talk to different
Speaker:people, different people, and they're at this club down there, they're over there,
Speaker:they might go twice a year. But the fact
Speaker:is people want to travel, to play good golf.
Speaker:And ultimately getting back to what you said earlier, to
Speaker:have a good time, the experience, that's what it is.
Speaker:100%.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: That's the, that. That's the
Speaker:instinct in the brain. That's what, um, that's enable.
Speaker:That's empowering these decisions of people to
Speaker:do these things. It's like we want experiences that we can
Speaker:talk about for the rest of our life, where we spend it with our
Speaker:best friends and, uh, don't really have a lot
Speaker:of worries out there. I think that's another reason
Speaker:why, like, some of these clubs
Speaker:really are strict on, like, the phone policy.
Speaker:And I used to just think this was so stupid.
Speaker:Like, I really didn't like it, but now I'm almost accepting
Speaker:where it's like, now I have an embedded
Speaker:excuse that's legit, that, hey, I was out of pocket
Speaker:all day. I was over at this place and
Speaker:get back to you tomorrow. Or like, there's like, it's a
Speaker:reason, it's a real reason to just not deal with the phone. And
Speaker:that's a breath of fresh air.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Well, and it keeps you present. I mean, at the end of the.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Day, that's the best. That's what it is.
Speaker:I'm. I'm the worst. It's just, you're on
Speaker:a golf course and suddenly you're looking at your phone. You're like, what am I doing? I'm at
Speaker:the most beautiful place in the world. And why am I, like, in this
Speaker:fantasy world?
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I think we all are. It's true. It's like, it just keeps you present,
Speaker:keeps you locked in.
Speaker:Speaking of no phones, uh, and I know at this
Speaker:point in time, this has been a couple weeks ago.
Speaker:But the Masters recently wrapped up, and we got an
Speaker:exciting. This set the stage for an
Speaker:exciting remaining three majors, in my opinion.
Speaker:You know, with the pga, the US Open at
Speaker:Oakmont, and then naturally the Open Championship.
Speaker:So Rory got the job done. He
Speaker:finally got the monkey off the back. And, you know,
Speaker:they were showing photos of him winning, and every
Speaker:person in that crowd was just focused
Speaker:on what was happening in that moment. No one had their phones out.
Speaker:No one was video recording it, whatever. But
Speaker:what was your take on the
Speaker:2025 Masters
Speaker:tournament?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Relieved. Proud. Not proud.
Speaker:Relieved that Rory won. I.
Speaker:I really felt I was
Speaker:having, like, real sensations
Speaker:of like, I want him to win, which I
Speaker:really have never rooted for Rory that much in my life.
Speaker:I mean, I like him, but,
Speaker:you know, I'd always been like, Tiger for sure. And then if there's
Speaker:other guys around, sometimes I like to root for other
Speaker:guys. But this one was like, I'm, um, just I
Speaker:want Rory when this so bad. And my heart was in my
Speaker:throat on that eight, that putt on 18 in regulation. When
Speaker:he missed it, I said, oh, my goodness, like, I can't even
Speaker:imagine how I'd feel right now. But credit
Speaker:to him, he compartmentalized that,
Speaker:that and just hit a great drive on
Speaker:18, hit a great wedge and finish
Speaker:it off. So, yeah, relief.
Speaker:That's my feeling still.
Speaker:>> RB: I think that if he did not
Speaker:win that thing,
Speaker:number one, we'd be still talking about him not winning the
Speaker:Masters next year or whatever. Um,
Speaker:but I don't think Rory would be
Speaker:this. I think this was a big career
Speaker:swing for him. I don't think Rory would have been the
Speaker:same player after losing the masters
Speaker:with a three or four shot lead going into 13.
Speaker:Essentially, it's wrapped up.
Speaker:I mean, really, it is with, with his playing ability,
Speaker:the way he's been playing, there is zero
Speaker:chance he was going to lose this thing. And then all of a sudden, it just started
Speaker:slipping, slipping, slipping. Now all of a sudden,
Speaker:you know, a lot of people don't. Didn't
Speaker:recognize his walk from 18T
Speaker:in regulation to his second shot.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Mm.
Speaker:>> RB: He m. Was hyperventilating. He was literally.
Speaker:You could just see it in him. And
Speaker:then also he
Speaker:was very quick on his second shot. That's not being talked
Speaker:about. He wanted to get it out of the way. He just
Speaker:want. I mean, look at.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: He was playing fast that last hole.
Speaker:>> RB: He got in the bunker, the camera almost missed
Speaker:him hitting that shot. Went out of the bunker on
Speaker:18. And so
Speaker:I say that because, you know,
Speaker:uh, Dr. Bob Rotel is a good friend of the show, and
Speaker:he works with Rory. But his big thing is,
Speaker:why are you making this shot any more different
Speaker:than the last 71 holes? Right? And I get
Speaker:what. I get what you're gonna say, but
Speaker:that got you here. Stick to it.
Speaker:Stick to your routine on your second shot. I mean, for him to miss a
Speaker:green from 115 yards is a wedge.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Especially when he was wedging it good. Other than 13,
Speaker:that is insane to me.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Pressure.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I think there were two shots in that round
Speaker:that exhibited his
Speaker:not only skill set, but just where he was with
Speaker:his game. And whether or not those shots had
Speaker:any, they really didn't have an effect on the
Speaker:outcome, because ultimately, the 18th hole played the
Speaker:biggest effect on the outcome. But. But. But he
Speaker:was dead off a seven tee
Speaker:box. I mean, he was left. He was dead.
Speaker:And he hit this shot over the tree. Didn't even know where
Speaker:it was going to go. You know, swung as hard as he
Speaker:swung as hard as he could, got that ball up.
Speaker:Everyone's looking around for it, and it lands on the green. And
Speaker:he himself, you could tell, was like, what in the hell just
Speaker:happened? I didn't even think it was going to get there. He had nine iron from, like,
Speaker:175, opened it up or whatever. But
Speaker:that shot and then the shot on 15
Speaker:when he hit that high, towering draw in there,
Speaker:that in itself, just those
Speaker:two shots. Again, not saying those had any effect
Speaker:on the outcome, because I don't think they did. But I think that
Speaker:just showed where he was in his mindset and his
Speaker:ability to pull off a victory.
Speaker:Um, and then naturally, you can argue the t
Speaker:shot on 18 in the playoff. I mean,
Speaker:that's how much pressure is on that shot.
Speaker:Well, first off, he waited. How long did they wait
Speaker:after 17 in regulation? They waited
Speaker:because Oberg was botching 18 up.
Speaker:They waited probably seven minutes before they teed off.
Speaker:That hasn't.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: That was. That was. It was an EP. Uh, I
Speaker:thought it was over on 13. Tee Box. I went. I left the
Speaker:house. I took my dog for a walk. Like, I thought
Speaker:it was done. After he hit the 12 tee
Speaker:shot, I did in my mind, like, okay,
Speaker:where can this really go that much wrong? And I
Speaker:was like, I guess if he hooks it off 13 like he did on
Speaker:10 in 11, like, I
Speaker:guess, but I don't. And then he hit the three wood, and I'm like, I don't
Speaker:see. And then I walked in.
Speaker:>> RB: What.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I don't know what happened between. He laid it Up. And I walked in, and
Speaker:all of a sudden, like, they're zooming in on the ball
Speaker:in the water on 13. I'm like, wow, did he
Speaker:really do that? And then I'm like, oh, this was his third
Speaker:shot. I thought he went for it in a second. That was his third shot.
Speaker:>> RB: He would have been better off doing that.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: He would have been, because he would have saved his stroke. But,
Speaker:um, I. I just think
Speaker:that the amount of pressure
Speaker:that he felt.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Oh, my God.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Was just
Speaker:incredible. He got over it, though.
Speaker:So I would say, watch out.
Speaker:Yeah, watch out.
Speaker:>> RB: Well, in our lifetime, we're, you know, I'm
Speaker:38 years old. I look like I'm 55.
Speaker:Um, but in our
Speaker:lifetime, we've seen amazing
Speaker:athletes, right? All sports.
Speaker:I don't think I've ever witnessed an
Speaker:athlete, one of the best,
Speaker:have such a relief from.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: From.
Speaker:>> RB: There was so many things that just came off his back there.
Speaker:And I agree with what you just said. Watch
Speaker:out. I would say he's gonna win four to five
Speaker:majors over the next three or four years.
Speaker:And this monkey is off his back. He
Speaker:is. He is going to absolutely just roll
Speaker:now.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, I'm here for it.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah.
Speaker:>> RB: I think Oakmont's perfect for him, too.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Well, how about Quail Hollow? I mean, he's won there.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Quail Hollow, he's known. But Oak. I can't wait for
Speaker:Oakmont. Oh, man.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah.
Speaker:>> RB: And you've played there, right?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I haven't, but I've seen. I
Speaker:should go out there, but I don't think I can do it before the
Speaker:Open. But, um, I'll get out there. I
Speaker:know. I know enough people out there that I could. But, um,
Speaker:that's gonna. I cannot wait.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I know. And it's the same thing every time it comes to Oakmont.
Speaker:>> RB: Or.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Actually, no, it's the same thing every year. Every
Speaker:Open, is anyone gonna play?
Speaker:Well, are they gonna eat it up? Blah, blah, blah. And then it's like,
Speaker:you see what Bryson did at number two.
Speaker:Um, but I do think Oakmont is going
Speaker:to be an absolute test.
Speaker:And I haven't been there. I haven't played in a couple of years
Speaker:since the modifications were done. But from what I hear from people, from
Speaker:what he and I hear, probably the same things you hear Jake.
Speaker:It's like the course is going to be
Speaker:absolutely bitching for that golf
Speaker:tournament. So it's going to be fun to watch.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Oh, it's gonna be. I'm. I'm here for the day where
Speaker:the weather changes. They get wind that goes from like 5
Speaker:mph to 20 mph. Balls are not.
Speaker:They can't stop on green. People are going crazy. They've
Speaker:lost the course. Like, um, it could happen
Speaker:at Oakmont. I mean, they. Those things. Those
Speaker:greens are just diabolical.
Speaker:>> RB: Was it Shinnecock?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah.
Speaker:>> RB: The one where that was an absolute mess with the greens.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah, it was.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah. That's where Phil. Remember Phil Mickelson? Yeah. He
Speaker:just tries to stop it.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah.
Speaker:>> RB: Daily did.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: He said, this ball's not rolling anymore. I'm hitting it
Speaker:back.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I love. There's a part of me I don't care. At
Speaker:the end of the day, I'm happy for whoever wins. Truthfully. Like,
Speaker:that's a major championship. They work their ass off to get to that point.
Speaker:So, like, I'm not going to say, oh, I'm disappointed somebody won
Speaker:the major. No. But there is a part of me, and I told this
Speaker:to Pep, naturally, outside of. In this case,
Speaker:DeChambeau, who I love, and in
Speaker:this specific tournament, Patrick Reed. But outside of that,
Speaker:dude, you look at these guys that defected to
Speaker:live and these majors in the last.
Speaker:I don't know. They're nowhere to be found, dude.
Speaker:Like, they're nowhere to be found in terms of. In
Speaker:the mix.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, but I don't.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: You don't know there's any correlation?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Well, how many people are on live and how many of
Speaker:those live players are playing in the major?
Speaker:And then what percentage of those are
Speaker:finishing top 20? I don't. I don't think
Speaker:it's. I think it's just when you go from that, like,
Speaker:okay, how many players are in live? Let's say 100. I don't. I think
Speaker:that's high. How many are playing in the Masters?
Speaker:15.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: 6. Yeah. 10.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: 10. Okay. They had two in the top
Speaker:10.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: That's pretty good if you look at it like that.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: In this case, it was. Yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I just think they're getting, like, the.
Speaker:The ranking system is not working in their favor because
Speaker:all those guys are just losing out in points
Speaker:everywhere. Um, it's obviously
Speaker:not. It's not good for them, but I don't think that
Speaker:those guys are, like, lesser players.
Speaker:Koepko was right in it, and he
Speaker:quadrupled 18 somehow. Yeah, Koepko
Speaker:was. He was, like, right there.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: And I'm not. Not rooting for them. Uh, and that's what I want to be clear
Speaker:on with what I just said. Like, if Koepka's in the mix, dude,
Speaker:I'm cool with it. It's all Good. But I just. From my perspective,
Speaker:it's just like maybe. And maybe
Speaker:I'm wrong for thinking that maybe my thought of them not
Speaker:necessarily all being in the mix is just such a
Speaker:terrible thought that it's not even worth talking about. But
Speaker:again, it's just my perspective on it. Um,
Speaker:and dude, I would love to see DJ
Speaker:in the mix coming down the stretch. You know,
Speaker:I'd love to see that. You know, I don't think
Speaker:he's done, um, that Cam M. Smith. Cam Smith.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I like him. There's some guys I like over there. I like Koepka. I
Speaker:think he's a killer.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I don't have an issue.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: He's a. He's a, um. He's like a Michael Jordan out
Speaker:there. He's just a killer.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah. No.
Speaker:>> RB: You know who I haven't heard in the last two years
Speaker:of Matt Wolf.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Oh, he.
Speaker:>> RB: You talk about two years.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I think it's been more than that gun.
Speaker:>> RB: You, uh, didn't even hear about the guy?
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah, yeah, it's nothing.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: He just started off so fast. Wing foot, was it?
Speaker:>> RB: Yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Top five or something? Yeah.
Speaker:>> RB: Uh, that's a gem. Oh, man.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, there's. It's the northeast.
Speaker:>> RB: Yeah, it's just. It's just keep.
Speaker:So, Jake, what. Before you did
Speaker:this, what. What was your profession? What is your profession? Is this
Speaker:what you're doing full time? What. What is that like for you right
Speaker:now?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, I'll give you. I'll try to keep it under 30. I don't know if I can. But,
Speaker:um, I did my
Speaker:MBA right before COVID
Speaker:and then it went into Covid at Villanova. I did that in real
Speaker:estate and finance, and then I went into the
Speaker:private equity world in real estate
Speaker:and quickly realized
Speaker:that that might have not been a great
Speaker:decision to cater my education and my life to
Speaker:that line of work. Although it was a clear
Speaker:path to stability and
Speaker:making a good amount of money, I really,
Speaker:really did not enjoy what I was doing.
Speaker:So, um, I left that
Speaker:about a year and a half ago. And I
Speaker:intended to buy my own
Speaker:apartment buildings. Sub institutional, like
Speaker:under 100 units. I was going to raise LP
Speaker:capital and I thought it was going to be a really opportune time
Speaker:to buy real estate because interest
Speaker:rates were up, there was blood in the street. Nobody knew what
Speaker:was going on. It just was a bad time for real estate. And typically
Speaker:in those times, it's good to buy. Turns out.
Speaker:Well, I can't say it turns out because I don't know yet, but it really
Speaker:did not Feel like a good time to buy. And everything I
Speaker:looked at, um, just from a metric
Speaker:standpoint was no good. And so I
Speaker:kept looking, but in my free time, I started doing this.
Speaker:And, um, it quickly
Speaker:became, uh, a
Speaker:lot more fun. I enjoy it,
Speaker:and it's become, uh,
Speaker:a business. So I pretty much
Speaker:have fully turned my attention to this in 2025.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: So a couple months
Speaker:talk about two different spectrums, you know, private equity,
Speaker:real estate, and raising capital. And then it's like,
Speaker:well, I got this thing going on where I'm talking.
Speaker:>> RB: About 31s and Ben Curtis.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, it's very different, but there are a lot of,
Speaker:you know, it's business at the end of the day, like,
Speaker:well, it's not. So what the. The video stuff, that's
Speaker:creativity, that's artistry. But then, like,
Speaker:if I have to make, I need to make this a business and I gotta make
Speaker:money somehow. And a lot of those skills I learned in my
Speaker:MBA and in business, they're transferable
Speaker:and contracts and all that stuff. And I
Speaker:think I feel confident
Speaker:about that side of the business, so.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: That's awesome, dude. Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah. And believe me, I have not come across
Speaker:anyone like you in terms of what you're doing. I think you do have
Speaker:a niche. Really do. I mean that.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Um, I appreciate that. Thank you for saying that. It
Speaker:feels. Gotten that feedback. I've
Speaker:gotten that feedback a handful of times, and that gave me
Speaker:the, uh, the power to say, you know
Speaker:what? I really think there's something here. Even if the money wasn't there
Speaker:yet. It was like, I feel like there's
Speaker:a group of people that believe in what I'm doing
Speaker:and. And sometimes the money comes
Speaker:after the product or
Speaker:whatever.
Speaker:>> RB: Right.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: And I think this is one of those situations where it's just like, you keep building, you
Speaker:keep doing, you keep producing good
Speaker:stuff for the world and just good things, good things happen.
Speaker:Yeah, that's the intention.
Speaker:>> RB: Couldn't agree more with you.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah, you guys got to give him a follow on Instagram, Stout
Speaker:S T O U T dot land. And
Speaker:you will see his profile pop up, man. Really cool
Speaker:stuff. Um, very interesting, man. It's like,
Speaker:yeah, like I said. And who knows? You might be
Speaker:for hire. At some point, someone might come in and say, hey, uh,
Speaker:let's get you in a. In a member. Guest
Speaker:somewhere, or let's.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Oh, that's been. I. I
Speaker:cannot believe how many
Speaker:golf invitations I say no to now. I mean, I
Speaker:just, uh, I.
Speaker:There's, you know, I got to make videos and I gotta I gotta produce
Speaker:content. But it would be nice to play golf every day, which a lot of
Speaker:people like. That, follow me, are like, do you play golf every game? Like, no, I
Speaker:just. The days I do, I try to post it and share it because
Speaker:that's kind of my job now, and I enjoy that.
Speaker:But, um, no, it's pretty good. Like,
Speaker:I'm trying to make a living here, literally playing golf.
Speaker:So that's not bad.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Well, hey, man, hats off to you, you know. Have you ever
Speaker:read the book the Alchemist?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I don't think I have, no.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Oh, uh, dude, it is a phenomenal book. In fact,
Speaker:I just started reading it again. It's called the
Speaker:Alchemist talks about your personal legend.
Speaker:Basically, you had a dream as a
Speaker:kid, and as time goes on,
Speaker:the world, the universe changes and people forget
Speaker:about their dream. But the reality is you got to
Speaker:hold onto that dream, create your personal legend
Speaker:and remember where you came from ultimately. So
Speaker:it's a great book. Read it if you like reading.
Speaker:Um.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Oh, I love it. I just wrote it down. So I'll read
Speaker:it and I'll let you know.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I love it. Chasing birdies, man. That's what you're doing.
Speaker:So, um, it was a pleasure having you
Speaker:on the show and. And naturally grateful for your time.
Speaker:But before we end pep, you got anything else you
Speaker:wanted to or you want to roll in?
Speaker:>> RB: No, I'm going to roll into the tap in segment, brought to you
Speaker:by, uh, betting arty golf asked you four
Speaker:questions. Give us your best
Speaker:answers. All right. Least favorite
Speaker:golf roll.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Golf roll, yes. What do
Speaker:you mean by that?
Speaker:>> RB: So, you know, playing out of a divot
Speaker:or a rule?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: A rule. Oh, sorry. I thought you
Speaker:meant God. Okay, understood. Um,
Speaker:well, now that you say yeah, I don't. I don't like hitting
Speaker:it down the middle of the fairway 300 and then being in a hole.
Speaker:I really wish that was
Speaker:somehow, like, could be changed.
Speaker:So, um, I'll give you another one.
Speaker:I think there shouldn't be out of bounds. It should just be all hazards.
Speaker:If you hit it out of bounds and you figure out when you're all the
Speaker:way up the fairway to walk all the way back the tee box, it slows play
Speaker:down. It's. I just. I
Speaker:don't. I think it should just all be hazard.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Steve Piering would love that role.
Speaker:>> RB: Yes. He would be all in on that buddy of ours
Speaker:dream. Um, foursome, dead or alive.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Oh, man. All right, we'll get interesting.
Speaker:Okay, so Tiger woods is going to be in there. I'll
Speaker:Throw in Anthony, um, Bourdain. Oh,
Speaker:just a wild card there. And
Speaker:then my dad.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: That's a good one.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: There we go.
Speaker:>> RB: And for those of you listening, uh, your
Speaker:father, is he the running backs or the
Speaker:running backs coach for the Philadelphia Eagles?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: No. Offensive line and run game coordinator.
Speaker:>> RB: There you go.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: You know, um, he has a Super.
Speaker:>> RB: Bowl ring after this year. That was awesome to watch.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Two. We have two now he has two.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Do you know a coach by the name of Tyler Brown, by chance?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, of course.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah. So that's my cousin.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: No way.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah, I was just.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: We were just talking to him last night.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah. Yeah, that's my cousin. Yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Wow.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Uh. Huh. Uh-huh.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Small world. Yeah, I know. Tyler. Yeah. Tell him we spoke. He'll
Speaker:know exactly who I am.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: I only see him on Instagram. M. We catch up every now and then. You see?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: All right, then I'll tell him I spoke to you.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah, you tell him. Yeah, yeah, you tell him.
Speaker:>> RB: All right. Um, your favorite golf club.
Speaker:In the bag.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Nine iron.
Speaker:>> RB: Oh. Geminate iron. So we're back to
Speaker:back. All right. And last question. What are you
Speaker:chasing?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Happiness. M. That's what
Speaker:I'm chasing. I. I,
Speaker:um, I studied abroad in
Speaker:2016, my junior year of college, and I
Speaker:realized that I studied abroad in Spain, and I realized
Speaker:that people in Spain work to
Speaker:live, and I
Speaker:was brought up and my whole life was live to work.
Speaker:And there's a very big difference in the standpoint
Speaker:of how you live your life. And I did not take
Speaker:that understanding at the beginning of my professional
Speaker:career, and I've now kind of
Speaker:adjusted that, and I'm still very aspirational,
Speaker:and I want to succeed, and I have big expectations for
Speaker:what I can do on this world. But at the
Speaker:end of the day, what's life if you're not
Speaker:enjoying the ride? So happiness.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Hey, I love that. That
Speaker:vibes with me really well. Yeah,
Speaker:brother. Well, good stuff, Jake, man. We got to keep in
Speaker:touch and, you know, we got to peg it up sometime. The
Speaker:three of us +1. We'll find someone else.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I might end up at Pike Wood, so if I do, I'll let you know.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah, dude, definitely. Yeah. Anytime you want to come out, let's.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Get a good friend that really wants to get me out
Speaker:there. So.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah, we'll do it, man. Well, thanks for coming on the
Speaker:show.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Thank you, guys.
Speaker:>> RB: Man. I loved hearing that episode with
Speaker:Jake, um, again, give him a follow
Speaker:on Instagram at Stout Land.
Speaker:It's cool stuff. There's some cool stories that he has,
Speaker:um. And again, Yawky Guinea
Speaker:Country Club has been brought to the forefront because of my
Speaker:man.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah. How's he know that?
Speaker:>> RB: So that's what I'm saying.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: You browse through some of that stuff he puts out, like,
Speaker:some of the logos and some of the names of these clubs,
Speaker:um, you just realize how
Speaker:little you actually know about golf.
Speaker:>> RB: Exactly.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Or places to play. You know,
Speaker:like, we, uh, were just talking about that,
Speaker:um, playing golf this past weekend. Like, yeah,
Speaker:there's obviously golf courses
Speaker:overseas that I want to go play, and so do you.
Speaker:But there's also so many within our country
Speaker:that, A, we probably don't know about a lot of them. We
Speaker:definitely don't. And B, the ones that we know of. Why don't we
Speaker:try to play, like, Northern Michigan, for example, playing some of those
Speaker:places.
Speaker:>> RB: Right.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Um, you know, there's so much good golf.
Speaker:Explore the Long island market
Speaker:a little bit. Even Philly more where
Speaker:our boy Jake is, you know, so.
Speaker:And it just shows you. It's like, man, you know, just when you think
Speaker:you like, oh, I played that course, and then you hear a name, it's
Speaker:like, where the hell's that? And it's like, I never even heard of
Speaker:it.
Speaker:>> RB: Well, I just went, uh, to the Rangers last
Speaker:game of the year with my son Parker, and
Speaker:caught, uh, up with our boy Vinny Trocheck after the game.
Speaker:And. And then also ran into J.T. miller,
Speaker:and J.T. said, why don't you come over and head over to the
Speaker:Hamptons and play a little golf?
Speaker:So, naturally, I
Speaker:might clear my schedule for that one. But, um.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah, but you're. I mean,
Speaker:yeah, you do that. You play in a member guest down at that
Speaker:old hick. I mean, just get it rolling.
Speaker:>> RB: I got that a couple new member guests this year, so that's nice.
Speaker:And I'm. I'm good for you getting
Speaker:some new blood in me at these number
Speaker:guests. So I'm really excited about the Old Hickory member guest
Speaker:with Cole Taylor, my partner.
Speaker:So, um, I don't think we're gonna drink it
Speaker:all this,
Speaker:so.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: But I'm excited for this little, uh, little
Speaker:trip we got here next week down in Georgia at, uh,
Speaker:Peachtree and Sage Valley with
Speaker:some of the boys here playing a little G, raising
Speaker:some money for a good cause, and ultimately having some fun,
Speaker:dude. So that's what's on my radar right now.
Speaker:>> RB: I'm really excited about that. Yeah.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: Yeah.
Speaker:>> RB: I'm so excited for you guys to get to.
Speaker:Obviously, you've played Peachtree, but then Head over to
Speaker:Sage Valley and. And, uh, see. See that,
Speaker:set up and experience it for two, um, maybe three
Speaker:days. Maybe another place. I don't know. Um,
Speaker:I'll be ready. I'll just leave it out there. I packed a pair of pants.
Speaker:Um, so far. Drive, but it's
Speaker:not far. Drive, but, um, yeah, Sage Valley. You're
Speaker:gonna. And you're gonna love it. And like you said, raising some. Some money
Speaker:for a great, great cause. Saturday
Speaker:night.
Speaker:Um, so I'm gonna stay chasing this week,
Speaker:buddy, and I can't wait to see you in Georgia.
Speaker:And, um, thank you all for listening to
Speaker:Chase the Birdies. Make sure you go to chasing underscore Birdies. We
Speaker:appreciate we're starting to get a little m. Momentum, bud, since this
Speaker:new setup. It feels good. So thank you to you,
Speaker:Ryan Bashower. Thank you to you. This whole setup,
Speaker:this. I mean, if people saw this thing now, it's pretty funny.
Speaker:I'm sweating under the light. Um,
Speaker:but again, thank you, and, uh, stay
Speaker:tuned, because we got some. Some cool guests on the hook that we
Speaker:just got to get nailed down, but they've committed. We just got to get those
Speaker:dates.
Speaker:>> Jonathan: That's it. And thank you to you for that
Speaker:pep, and I mean it. But like
Speaker:he said, you guys out there tuning into today's episode
Speaker:of Chasing Birdies, we appreciate it very much.
Speaker:And thank you to Allie, Emily, and Ivo over at
Speaker:Simpler Media for putting this thing together. Jaclyn
Speaker:Depot, Rachel London, for all your help. You
Speaker:guys tuning in this weekend on the PGA Tour with the Zur
Speaker:Classic. What a phenomenal team event this is.
Speaker:Hope, uh, you all have a blessed weekend,
Speaker:and we will catch y'all in two.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: The j.
Speaker:>> RB: Uh.
