Today's episode is taken from our new podcast, Driving Test Tips, which is based around the top 10 reasons that people fail their driving test. However, the content of the episodes, isn't just for learner drivers as we hope that it will help drivers who want to build their confidence, fill any gaps in their knowledge, or maybe have a light bulb moment while they're listening. So in this episode, we are talking about not having. Control of the vehicle when you are moving off. When might this happen? So normally this means stalling. So if you think. Of, You are parked on the side of the road, you know, in your test, like we said before, they're gonna pull you up about five. Six times, know, whatever it may be. To move, away. But every time what you do is you stall It's just repeating, you still. Stop the car, you start and off you go again, but you're doing it all the time. So every time you stop, you are just keep Mo stalling before you move away, could be many different reasons why, but again, that is another fault, cuz it show that you haven't got control of the car. We're moving. In one of our driving confidence podcast episodes. We talk about stalling and we talk about the fact that. Stalling a car doesn't necessarily mean that you failed your test. But what we're talking about in this. Episode is the doing it repeatedly. So, if you're unable to move away. Without stalling, the car repeatedly. Then this is a flag for an examiner. Basically what you are showing the examiner is. That you don't really know how to move a car where you do eventually, but you need to stall it first to do it. And. When you think about it, what does that show? The examine? It shows them that you are still a learner really. You're not this. Competent driver that they want to see. You need to show your skills. I can move away safely. But I can keep the car under control. I can keep the car, with the biting point and accelerator and the hand break, and I can use all of those controls to move my car away safely. Yeah. So I'm conscious that perhaps this episode contradicts with another episode. And we still don't want people to panic. If you stall your car in a driving test. Then this is an opportunity to show your skills that you can get the car moving away. Safely afterwards. So stalling once. Doesn't mean that you failed your test necessarily. It all depends on the situation and it all depends on whether you've been able to show that you can move the car away on other occasions. Without stalling. Yeah. And this is, you know, this is about reasons why people failed at test. So we give you a few examples. In this. And one of them is, a classic. Really? Cuz again, people don't like hill starts. So when you go to move away on a hill start you stall the car. Which is okay, but in this situation to failure, test. You would roll back a considerable distance. There might not be a car behind you. But what's happened is. You potentially caused danger to another because you stalled and rolled too far. And you didn't show I stalled and stopped the car very quickly. So it didn't roll back. Or move back slightly didn't matter too much. So this is the, what we talked about before the different types of faults they realized there as well The potentially you cause danger to others while doing a hill start Yeah So that would cause you to fail And it's the rolling back. That's the real issue here. Yeah, that's what caused it. It stall is okay. But it's how you controlled it and you didn't control the car. You you rolled back too far. Yeah. So another one. For stalling or, you know, failing for. Controlled of your car and moving off. Is when you stall repeatedly in one situation and it may well be Traffic lights or junctions Or whatever it may be And there may be very different reasons why you keep doing it Maybe that you've stopped in third gear. You haven't put it into first gear. And you're trying to move away in third gear and it's just not happening or. You get into first gear eventually, but. Then the next one is you're coming off the clutch too quick. And then again, you just repeats itself. And what happens is the examiner now needs to step in and give you help to get the car moving away out of that situation. So that might well be the situation where you can fall to repeatedly stalling in one situation. And again, what might happen is. You might try to move away. But you haven't selected a gear. So imagine the situation you've come to as big set of traffic lights. And your traffic lights have just changed. So what happens is you put the car hand break on, into neutral. You now prepare because what's gonna happen is the traffic lights are about to. Change. And what happens is you get the car ready with your hands on the steering wheel. Your hands on the hand break. You get the actual. Clutch almost ready. The foot with the accelerator. You put the hand break off when the lights go to green. And all you do is you rev it and the car starts to roll back. Cuz basically what you've done is you've forgot to put it in gear. Again, just think of when you prepared the car. If you have gone back into hand breaker neutral and you're waiting. Go through that routine. Again, talk yourself for a. Make sure you put the in clutch down in gear. So it is gonna move away when new lights change and you can move away. Another one of the driving safety facts that they gave us for this one were. There were 942 reported accidents in great Britain in 2019. Caused by driver error when moving off at junctions. So again, just, um, About how you move away. Am I in control of this vehicle when I move away. What do I need to do when I'm in control? What does that mean to me? We hope you found that useful. If you did, don't forget to share it with others or leave us a review.
